However, the military needed a different kind of good man, so Delmer returned to Homer. He looked upon this time with fondness, and when he passed, his dog tags and USAF ring were with him.
He obtained a nursing certificate as an LPN and began a more than 30-plus year career as a nurse for the Albion Hospital where he had been born. His many patients and the nurses/staff he worked with were very fond of Delmer. All Delmer wanted was to love and be loved - at this he succeeded. Proof exists in the many individuals who would greet Delmer on the street and thank him for taking care of them in the hospital. Additional proof were in the many pictures Delmer had taken kissing the female nurses and doctors. He then proudly displayed these photos and treasured them always.
Delmer lived with his grandparents, Joseph Kroul and the former Julia Svoboda at 309 E. Hamilton Street in Homer and took care of them until their passing. He once performed CPR on a neighbor and saved the person’s life. Delmer continued to live in the house decorating it in his own eclectic style while working at the hospital. He loved to play cards, and watch sports and war movies. His favorite food was the garbage pizza at Homer’s Cascarelli’s and his mother’s Russian stew, kolaches, and Zelnicky pastries.
Delmer retired from his job in 2002 when the Albion Hospital closed. He then took a job caring for an elderly gentleman until that gentleman passed. His last job was at a nursing home where two former RNs of Albion Hospital were the director and co-director. After three weeks of delivering medications to patients and after having to deal with a lot of paperwork, Delmer felt it best to permanently retire. At this time, he had already purchased a home in Albion.
For a short time, Delmer lived with his sister in Virginia, returning to Albion to live in 2014. Left to celebrate his life include an aunt, Margaret Lindroth (Blumenstock); a sister, Corinne K. Lee (aka Reno) and husband, Ed (aka Colonel Hayakawa/Howie); a brother, Brent Blumenstock (aka Colonel) and wife, Lori (aka Lori Belle); nieces, Toni McCreash (aka Limburger Cheese) and her husband, Greg, and Valerie Blumenstock; nephews, Ted Lee (aka Buddha) and wife, Nancy, Frederick Blumenstock (aka Freddie the Freeloader) and wife, Jill, and Daniel (aka Daniel A Dumb) Blumenstock. Grand-nieces include Megan Lee and Morgandy McCreash, grand-nephews Dustin Lee and Hayden McCreash, and the gal-pal who was like a daughter and a best friend to Delmer, Michelle Arnett (aka Boo-Boo) and husband, Mike. In addition, he leaves cousins Julie Nash and husband, Jerry; Jane Harman and husband, Bill; and Louie Kroul and wife, Cathy, as well as many friends.

Family seeks answers in man’s death
2002 HHS grad dies after suffering head injuries in S.F.
by Mike Warner
The family of a Homer High School graduate is seeking answers to his death - and possible murder - in San Francisco, including the whereabouts of his girlfriend and her brother.
Sean Rhye, a 2002 HHS graduate, was found lying on a San Francisco sidewalk with a head injury early in the morning of May 31. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead June 3. Now, his brother Donald VanMeter - a 1999 Trojan graduate - is seeking answers to his death. He’s started a justiceforseanrhye.com website to keep his brother’s memory alive and to help find those elusive answers to his death.
VanMeter, who lives in North Carolina, said he’s trying to get information from San Francisco police.
“There is so much going on out there, it takes time,” he said.
“Here is what I gather based on a conversation with the medical examiner,” VanMeter posted on Facebook. “The official report hasn’t been released yet. Around 6 a.m. on May 31, Sean was seen by some construc-tion/utility type workers pacing an alley looking a little disoriented. The workers said he walked around for about an hour and then they saw him collapse. They immediately called 911.
“The witnesses said he seemed to be dazed and confused,” VanMeter stated in an interview with the Index.
“Out there, when someone collapses they call an ambulance, not the police, so it took a while for them to get involved,” he explained.
VanMeter went on to say he has been told Rhye was initially responsive and talking to EMTs, but lost consciousness during the trip to the hospital.
“The paramedics asked him what happened to him, and true to his style, he said nothing,” VanMeter said. “He did not give the name of the person(s) who did this, nor would he readily accept medical treatment. He argued with the paramedics until they were finally able to convince him to take a ride to the hospital.
“I think he died on the way to the hospital,” he added. “They just kept him alive with machines for a couple of days.”
VanMeter was trying to raise money to fly to California following the incident, but was informed of his brother’s death just as he was finalizing plans. He said Rhye’s remains were scheduled to be cremated late last week, and he was making arrangements to have the ashes flown back to North Carolina.
VanMeter is convinced his brother was the victim of foul play.
“He had a brain hemorrhage. It sounds like someone hit him on the head. He was walking around all confused. Maybe he realized he was in a bad situation and was trying to get way from it.”
He said Rhye’s girlfriend Vanessa Schull and her brother Anthony Schull have both “disappeared” since the death, and he’s taken to social media to try and get them to surface and answer questions.
VanMeter said his brother changed after an accident in Homer, and after beginning a relationship with Vanessa Schull.
Rhye, an All Big Eight Conference linebacker for the Trojans in 2001, lost his right hand after getting it caught in a cheese shredder at a local restaurant. VanMeter said that had a profound effect on his brother.
“It took his hand away from him, and gave him his first taste of pain medication,” VanMeter said.
He stated on a video he posted on YouTube that Sean would later get involved in drugs, and he thought an addiction to pain medication was part of the problem.
VanMeter moved to North Carolina in 2006 and Rhye followed a short time later.
Rhye was able to find work with a paving company, and even tried boxing.
“He was known as the “One-handed Bandit.’ ”
Then Rhye reconnected with Schull, a long-time acquaintance. They moved to California where they lived with her brother, and slowly drifted apart from VanMeter and their mother Sarah.
Before moving in with Schull, VanMeter described his brother as, “bubbly. caring, outgoing and charismatic. He was always trying to help people and to encourage them.”
After starting his relationship with Schull, VanMeter said his brother changed.
“He became real distant. He had tunnell vision, like she was the only thing that mattered. A lot of people wanted to be in his life, but he wouldn’t let people in.”
When asked what his memories of his brother would be, VanMeter said, “That he was always sticking up for people. If you needed someone to watch your back, he would do it. And he loved going to our mother’s house for coffee in the morning.”
VanMeter and his family would like closure on Rhye’s death, but right now they have more questions than answers.
“I want to know why he died,” VanMeter said. “I want to know how he died. I want to know why he was walking around all by himself, and what his state of mind was at the time.”

Former HHS principal loses battle with cancer
by Mike Warner
Jeff Hinkle, former principal at Homer High School and the Jackson Area Career Center, loved working with students. That love kept him busy as a parapro at Homer Community Schools after retiring from his principal position.
Hinkle lost his short battle with cancer last week.
“Jeff was helping special needs students,” said HHS Principal Tom Salow, who followed Hinkle as principal at the school. “Whatever you asked him to do, he did it in a professional manner, with the best interest of the students at heart.
“When he left for the Career Center, he encouraged me to apply for the interim position. I had never even considered it. Then he mentored me when I took over. I credit Jeff for giving me the nudge to move into administration. I owe him a lot.
“It’s a sad day for the Homer family,” Salow added. “I can’t say enough good things about Jeff. Our thoughts and prayers go out to June and the entire Hinkle family.”
HCS special education teacher Sally Sheets worked with Hinkle the past two years in her classroom.
“He was a fun-loving, energetic guy,” she stated. “He was a lot of fun to be around. He was always telling the students stories about places he’d been, or people he’d met.
“I could tell he had been a great teacher and administrator by the way he related to the kids,” Sheets added. “He was always helping them get whatever needed to be done to pass a test or get an assignment done. He had a great passion for education and will be hugely missed.”
Hinkle began his teaching career at Parma Western, eventually becoming a principal in the district (see complete obituary on page 2).
He was an assistant principal at Columbia Central before serving six years as principal of Homer High School.
He is survived by his wife June, mother Rosemary, three daughters and two sons, as well as numerous grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday.

Allan Peterson
Allan Adolph Eugene Peterson, age 95, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at Spectrum Health RNC, in Reed City. Previous residences included Northville, Reed City, Homer and Marshall.
Mr. Peterson was born November 1, 1920, in Burea, Sweden, near the Arctic Circle, to Adolph and Alma (Renberg) Peterson. He immigrated with his parents, his sister and brother by boat to America in 1926, entering through Ellis Island and traveling by train to Detroit, where they settled in western Wayne County in Northville. There he attended school in a one-room school house, leaving to enter the work force after eighth grade.
He worked at various jobs with his carpenter father and also on local farms. By 16, he had his own rented room and a full-time job in tool and die, which remained his career for the next 33 years.
Allan met the love of his life, Mildred Pratt, of Homer, in the summer of 1941, and they married September 13, 1941, in Bryant, Ohio.
They remained married just two months shy of 75 years. They lived in Northville, where he worked through the war in the vital tool and die industry. He was especially talented in many areas and mastered many trades. The home he built in Northville for his growing family was the first of three homes he would build in his lifetime, as well as several major remodels. The Peterson home was called Hemmeteskoogen, which is Swedish for “home in the woods.”
Allan and Mildred traveled to Sweden twice in the late 1960s to visit the homeland and to reconnect with family. They also traveled extensively across America in their motor home to visit family and friends. They moved to Reed City in 1970, where they built two more homes and created a small farm while Mildred worked as a nurse in Reed City. After a brief move to Florida in the late '70s, they settled into the Homer/Marshall area, where he enjoyed many years of woodworking in his shop and always working with his hands. He dedicated many hours creating a full size, functioning replica of his favorite car - a 1932 Cord - out of wood! At all times family, friends and neighbors were important to him, as well as his firearm collection, the Homer Historical Society and his love of reading and history.
Allan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years, Mildred (July 2016); his son, Eric (July 2008); and infant son, Michael. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Alma; a sister, Engla; and brother, Paul.
He is survived by his son, Jim (Julie) Peterson of Leroy; daughters, Sue (Gene) Johnson of Chase, Penny (Wilson) Grier of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and Karen (Chris) Eason of Greer, South Carolina. Allan and Mildred had 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many bonus grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate the lives of Allan and Mildred will be held Saturday, October 29, at 11 a.m. at Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Homer Chapel. A luncheon will follow the service at noon, with Chaplain Dan Pfug officiating. A burial of ashes will immediately follow the luncheon at Lyon Lake Cemetery in Fredonia Township.

Delmer E. Blumenstock
Delmer E. Blumenstock, affectionately known as “Mr. B.,” “Delmo,” and “Delmie,” went to heaven to be with his parents, John H. Blumenstock (aka Big John) and the former, Mildred G. Kroul (aka Queenie) originally of Homer. Delmer was predeceased by many of his beloved animals including Rachel (a German shepherd), Johnny (a Siberian husky), and Emma (the cat). Over a year ago, Emma #2 (another cat) found a forever home with friends.
Delmer was born February 17, 1943, in Albion, and passed away April 11, 2016, in Jackson. As a child of a USAF Lieutenant colonel, Delmer traveled and lived in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Florida, Virginia, Kansas, Ohio, Portugal and Goose Bay, Canada.
After graduating from Rudyard High School in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Delmer enlisted in the USAF and went to basic training in Texas, for he so loved the military and wanted to be a nurse.

He didn’t let his retirement hold him back from helping teach young people. He went back to Homer Community Schools and worked as a parapro in the special education department for three years and resigned in 2016 due to illness.
Jeff was active in the Boy Scouts as a child and he earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of the Brooklyn Jaycees, the Lions Club, a leader of the Jacktown Packers, and member and was president of the Big 9 Sportsman Club.
