Accident kills boy, 12 by Mike Warner A 12-year-old boy, Ian Dunn, who was home sick from school, was accidentally shot to death by his father Tuesday, March 3, at 325 W. Everett Street in Homer. While the case remains under investigation, law enforcement officials are calling it accidental, although they are treating it as a homicide until all the evidence has been processed. Homer Police Chief Steve Fisher said his department was dispatched to the home at 2:04 p.m. Upon arrival they found the father, Kevin Dunn, 40, over the boy, who was laying on his right side, surrounded by a great deal of blood on the carpet. He had been shot once just below the right ear. Kevin Dunn called 911 after the incident. “The father was crying terribly, saying, ‘Oh my God, what have I done to my boy,’ ” Fisher said. According to the father, he was trying to clean a revolver, when it accidentally discharged, striking the boy, who was in the next room, about 15 feet away. The father told police he didn’t know the gun was loaded. Fisher said the gun was an Italian 44-calibre revolver that worked on black powder and ball, similar to a muzzleloader. Fisher said the gun was old and rusty. The father was having trouble opening the cylinder, and he had the hammer back and it slipped. The police chief added he tried to comfort the father and the boy, who was still breathing, but unresponsive. Joel Flees was the first officer on the scene. He said a neighbor, Jon Patton, met him outside and told him what happened. “The neighbor gave me a heads up on the situation,” Flees said. “I went into the home, saw what had happened, and called the fire department (which has a first responder emergency medical team). The information we first received wasn’t clear. We weren’t told a 12-year-old was involved until we got there.” Flees said Kevin Dunn was with his son trying to help. “He was pretty devastated,” the officer said. First responders from the Homer Fire Department tried to revive the victim with a defibrillator, but were not successful. He was pronounced dead at 2:27. The boy attended school in Marshall, but had been sick the past two days. He was staying at his father’s, along with his sisters Alyssa and Sara. The girls, 10 and 7, were at the house, but were outside. Kevin Dunn was supposed to take the girls to school, but had car trouble that morning. The home is owned by the boy’s grandmother, Sandy Dunn of Marshall. Kevin Dunn was taken to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office in Marshall, where he was interviewed by Detective Bryan Gandy. He told Gandy that Ian had woke up at 4 a.m. throwing up. He added he was unable to take the girls to school that morning because of trouble with his vehicle. His father came over later in the morning and they were able to get it operational. They went to the family farm, and stopped at Dairy Delite for ice cream on the way home. Once at home, he began to clean the gun. An autopsy was performed the following day at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, but the results may not be known for several weeks. Funeral services were held Monday at Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. His mother is Crystal Dunn. The complete obituary may be found on page 6. While the investigation continues, Fisher believes the shooting was accidental. “They were having a good day,” he said of the family. “They had just finished having ice cream cones. It was a tragic situation. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” he added.

Litchfield boy killed in car accident by Mike Warner A 7-year-old Litchfield boy who died in a car accident over the weekend is being remembered as a fun-loving youth, who was liked by all his classmates. Robert “Mike” Ruh III was killed Saturday at approximately 6:28 p.m. when the vehicle he was riding in left the roadway, overturned and struck a tree in Homer Township. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His 8-year-old brother, Austin, was airlifted by Med Flight to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries and released Monday. The boys’ father, Mike Ruh, 30, was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death and lodged at the Calhoun County jail. According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, he was on parole at the time of the accident. Arraignment was expected to be Tuesday or Wednesday, following blood work results from the state crime lab. The accident occurred in the 29000 block of U Drive South. Homer Police Officer Kurnin Pace was the first officer on the scene. She said the white Chevy 4 x 4 pickup truck was rolled on its side, lodged against a tree, with the two boys trapped inside. She said the father was walking and fully alert. The officer said it took Homer Fire Department officials about 45 minutes to extract the two boys, although emergency personnel were able to start treatment before they were totally removed. Pace said both boys were in seat belts, the youngest in a booster seat. Mike Ruh III was in Cheri Smith’s second grade class at Litchfield Elementary School. “He was just a delightful, cute little fellah,” Smith said. “He had a great sense of humor and was always happy and joking around. He was very helpful in class, one of those talkative fellows that always had something to say.” Smith said both Mike and Austin “are popular boys, friends to everyone.” Jessica Knight’s son Dalton was good friends with Mike Ruh, whom she described as “a very happy child who enjoyed playing with his brothers and sisters, and who loved playing video games and sports. Knight said a memorial trust fund has been established at County National Bank to help Ruh’s mother Loretta - who is employed at Hi-Lex in Litchfield - with funeral and medical expenses. Those wishing more information, may contact Carla Prater at 269-924-4214. School was canceled at Litchfield Monday due to icy road conditions. Smith said she was grateful to have a day off to collect her thoughts. She informed all the parents of Ruh’s classmates Sunday about the tragedy. A group of counselors from neighboring school districts were scheduled to be in the elementary school Tuesday to help students cope with the loss. Smith said she’s never had a child die during the school year during her 30 years of teaching. “I’m sure it (the first day back to school) will be different. I’m just planning to have a laid-back day in which counselors can meet with students individually or in small groups to help them with their questions.” The Homer Police Department, Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance Service assisted the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office at the scene. Funeral arrangements are pending at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. (w/photo)
