Molly Jeanne McNew Molly Jeanne McNew of Hillsdale, Michigan, passed away Monday, December 24, 2012, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born August 1, 2006, in Hillsdale, Michigan, the daughter of Arthur and Kelly (Wilmer) McNew. She is survived by her parents, Arthur and Kelly McNew; two brothers, Benjamin and Jack McNew; grandparents, John and Pam Purdy of Litchfield; great-grandmother, Anita “Pat” Smith of Litchfield; aunts and uncles, Dale and Lori (McNew) Wcisel of Davison, Michigan, Ed and AnnaMarie McNew of Flint, Michigan, Sue McNew of Otisville, Michigan, Chris and Krisy (Wilmer) Kuhl of Hanover, Michigan, John and Christel Wilmer and Joe and Vicki Wilmer, both of Hillsdale; and several cousins, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Archie and Evelyn McNew, and Tom Wilmer. Molly was a first grader in Mrs. Holland’s class at Gier Elementary School in Hillsdale. She was known to be the “girliest” girl who loved everything pink. She enjoyed music, dancing, going to the beauty salon, crafts, coloring, playing with friends and shopping with mom. Molly loved to spend her summers at the campground swimming with her cousins. A funeral service to honor the life of Molly Jeanne McNew was held at Hillsdale United Brethren Church, 240 S. Howell Street, Hillsdale, MI 49242, Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., with Pastor Les Smith and Jeremiah Hodshire officiating. Interment took place in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. The family received friends for visitation at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale Friday. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Molly McNew Memorial Fund at Gier Elementary School. Those in attendance helped the family celebrate Molly by donning their most pink, sparkly, girly clothes and accessories for the funeral service.

Caroline A. Weddle Caroline A. Weddle, 87, of Bronson, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2012, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater, surrounded by her family. A funeral was held Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater, with Pastor Bob Montgomery officiating. Visitation was held Wednesday, January 2, at the funeral home, followed by a reception at the Word of Life Outreach Center in Quincy. Interment will be held at a later date at Elmo Cemetery in Elmo, Missouri. Caroline was born August 19, 1925, in Albion, to Oscar W. and Mary A. (Timmons) Covey. She attended school in Tekonsha and Quincy. She married Marshall F. Weddle August 6, 1950, in Elmo, Missouri. The two met at the Tekon in Tekonsha. Marshall was from Missouri, so they made their home there until 1964 and then moved to Bronson. They stayed there until 1979, and then went back to Elmo. In 1987, they came back to Bronson and have lived there ever since. She had been a homemaker most of her life, raising her two boys. Caroline was an avid reader of novels and enjoyed watching baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and watching football. Her family will remember her for her big heart and quiet demeanor. She was very supportive of the Native American community in South Dakota with her time and resources through the years. Mrs. Weddle is survived by her sons Robert (Arlene) Weddle of Quincy and Marshall (Penny) Weddle, Jr. of Coldwater; grandchildren Sandra (Terry) Freeman of Auburn, Indiana, Sheila (Ben) Banks, of Fremont, Indiana, Timothy (Maureen) Weddle of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, Philip Weddle of Bronson, Theresa (Dan) Rinehart of Bronson, Dawn (Rick) Parker of Sturgis, Carol (Rodrigo) Lopez of Sturgis, Lori Hochstedler of LaGrange, Indiana, Abigail Weddle of Coldwater, Erica Sattler of Pennsylvania and Amy Sattler of North Carolna; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on October 29, 1995; her parents; her sisters, Orpha DeWater and Anetta Clay; and her brothers John, Henry and Ralph Covey. Rolland J. Bender Rolland J. Bender, 95, of Litchfield, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Country Living of Hillsdale, LLC. He was born August 25, 1917, in Homer Township to Earl and Mabel (Carson) Bender. Rolland graduated from Litchfield High School and became a longtime farmer. He also worked several years at Wolfinger’s Hardware, Inc. in Litchfield. Rolland belonged to the Litchfield Congregational Church and was a 64-year member of the Masonic Lodge (now Humanity Lodge #29 F & AM in Homer). On December 16, 1939, he married Jaunita (Mills) Bender and she preceded him in death September 12, 1968. He then married Pauline (Shideler) Bohrer Bender on March 20, 1974, and she also preceded him in death on July 19, 2002. Survivors include three daughters, J. Marie (Lanny) Eichler of Litchfield, Kathleen (Ronnie) Grubbs of Jonesville and Yvonne (Owen) Roberts of Jonesville; a son, R. Eugene (Sally) Bender of Sebring, Florida; a brother, Dale Bender of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and longtime friend, Louise Riedy of Bellaire. In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Russell and Kenneth; and a sister Marjorie Harris. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the Litchfield Congregational Church, with the Rev. Michael Murray officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Barbara Keller Barbara Keller, age 75, of Marshall, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Tendercare of Marshall, Michigan. She was born in 1937 to Adolph Edward and Mary Hazel (Hufendick) Lubic in Chicago, Illinois. Barbara was a custodian with the Homer Schools for 27 years. She loved to garden, taking care of animals and enjoyed her grandkids. Barbara is survived by a daughter, K. Coburn of Homer; a son, Walt Keller of Marshall; three grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; a sister, Mary Walker of Kalamazoo; and three brothers, Ernie (Elizabeth) Hawkins of South Haven, Ed (Franilyn) Lubic of Portage and Richard (Diana) Lubic of Plainwell. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kim Lubic; and a sister Nancy Tolbert. Chad B. Maurer Chad B. Maurer, 39, of Coldwater, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, at Tendercare of Marshall. He was born January 27, 1973, in Albion to Barry and Wendy (Talbot) Maurer and they survive in Leland, North Carolina. He was a 1991 graduate of Homer High School and went on to earn an associate degree in accounting. Chad was an employee of Asama Coldwater Manufacturing for over 12 years and attended Church of the Nazarene in Coldwater. On July 14, 2006, he married Teresa Macklin and she also survives, along with two brothers, Jamie Maurer of Homer and Jason (Chrissie) Maurer of Leland, North Carolina; two nieces, Jordan and Marylou Maurer; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene in Coldwater, with Pastor Robert Tharp officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Quincy. Helen Louise Smith Helen Louise Smith, 88, of Litchfield, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida. She was born December 21, 1924, in Calhoun County to Harold and Gladys (Carson) Houchen. Helen graduated from Litchfield High School in 1943 and became a dedicated volunteer aid at the school for many years. She married Robert R. Smith October 3, 1948, and he preceded her in death in 1987. Together, they owned and operated the St. Joe Mobile Home Park in Litchfield. Helen was a loving mother and grandmother who always had a smile on her face. She will be sadly missed by her family, including four children, Diana and Jeff Helm and Deb and Don Eichler, all of Litchfield, Karen Smith of Palmetto and Kevin (Juli) Smith of Jackson; two sisters, Dorothy Forshey of Palmetto and Donna (Raymond “Bob”) Spier of Avon Park, Florida; a sister-in-law, Mary Houchen of Litchfield; six grandchildren, Lindsey Rock, Jenn Smith, Matt Eichler, Max Helm, Krissy Smith and Robbie Smith; two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Callie Rock; and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard and Robert Houchen; and a grandchild, Joey. Raymond Estelle Raymond Estelle, age 86, of Battle Creek and formerly of Homer, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at his residence. He was born May 1, 1926, to Paul B. and Gula I. Estelle in Homer, Michigan. Raymond attended school in Homer through his junior year. He was drafted into the Navy during WWII; when he returned, he graduated from Marshall High School. He then went to Albright College in Battle Creek, from which he graduated. He loved sports, boating, fishing, hunting and playing cards. After his father’s death, he operated the Paul Estelle Iron and Metal of Homer, now Estelle Iron and Metal and Auto Parts for 36 years. He provided housing for many people in need. He was a life-long resident of Michigan. Raymond is survived by a son, Floyd (Karla) Estelle of Madison, Wisconsin; three granddaughters, Dr. Lestlie Estelle of Madison, Rebecca Forbes of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and Kaitlin Estelle of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; two great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; his soulmate of 41 years, Beverly Swank; two sisters, Kathleen Vincent of Battle Creek and Marian Teal of Warren; and several nieces and nephews According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Cora Lee Perkins Cora Lee Perkins, 93, of Homer, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born December 26, 1919, to Edward and Rebecca (Perkins) Harper in Morgan County, Kentucky. She married Millis Perkins December 21, 1939, in Kentucky. They were married for 57 years before he preceded her in death. Cora was very involved with the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Albion. She loved collecting dolls, but most of all she loved spending time with her family. Cora is survived by her children, Geraldine Wheeler (Wheeler Atkins), Murlene Fletcher, James (Diane) Perkins, Roberta Ratliff, Richard (Betty) Perkins, Orval Perkins, Debra (Randy) Crider and Carles (Linda) Perkins; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, all in Kentucky; a brother in Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Millis; son David Perkins; daughter Dorlene; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters; and three brothers. Grace E. (Falconer) Kleis Grace E. Kleis, nee Falconer, 98, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2013, in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was accompanied in her last days by members of her family and her dedicated caregivers. Grace passed peacefully and comfortably in her home. Born to parents David and Ruth Falconer of Scottville, she opened The Vogue Shop in Scottville in the early 1930s. She worked in the apparel industry in Detroit and Ann Arbor for seven years. Maintaining her entrepreneurial spirit, in 1945 she opened Falconer’s in Homer. She added a second store in Coldwater in 1952. Using her business acumen, she attracted customers from all of southern Michigan and northern Indiana. Over the years, many young people gained their work ethic from her example and learned the criteria for quality customer service. She was a mentor to nieces and nephews and a role model for the young women in her family. Her husband, Ephraim Perlmuter, who preceded her in death in 1964, joined her in this retailing effort. During this time, she was a resident of Jackson. She was a member of both the Arbor Hills and the Jackson Country Clubs. In 1973, she married Harold Kleis, an Ann Arbor businessman. They were members of Barton Hills Country Club. They resided in Ann Arbor prior to moving to Scottsdale, Arizona. They traveled extensively throughout the world. Grace was admired for her gracious hostessing. She and her husband entertained often, celebrating University of Michigan athletic events. They continued their residency in Scottsdale where she served as the treasurer of the Paradise Republican Women. Her husband Harold preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by nine nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Lundquist and Emma McFarland; and four brothers, Jesse, Wallace, David and Lawrence Falconer; and a nephew, Jack McFarland. Leonard Thomas McDonell Leonard Thomas McDonell, 79, never met a stranger… Lenny, as he was known to family and friends, left this world on Monday, February 4, 2013. Leonard was born July 27, 1933, to Howard and Nancy McDonell, who preceded him in death. He married the love of his life, Beverly Smith, September 25, 1959. Lenny worked as a machinist and truck driver until he retired in 1998. In 1972, the McDonells bought a farm in Litchfield becoming “City Farmers.” They raised many crops and animals, but his true love was his beloved Santa Gertrudis cattle. He was an active breeder until 2011. Lenny is survived by his wife, Beverly of Litchfield; brothers, Gerald McDonell, Hugh (Audrey) Hartsell and William McDonell; and sisters-in-law, Ina Woolum (Edward) and Sheila Wortmann (Robert). A brother, James also preceded him in death. Known as Uncle Len to many children in the Litchfield area, he leaves behind three nephews and five nieces, with many great- nephews and nieces. Leonard served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 when he was stationed in Japan. He was a member of the Litchfield Rotary, Litchfield First Baptist Church, Antiquated Friends and the Litchfield Area Historical Society. Visitation is scheduled Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield. Phyllis Winnick Phyllis Winnick, 96, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in Coldwater. She was born on January 7, 1917, in Petosky, to Leon and Inez (Hoxie) Hammontree. Phyllis enjoyed traveling and had a wonderful time visiting her daughter in Nevada. She loved playing different card games with her family and enjoyed playing bingo at the nursing home. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Winnick, Sr.; daughter Patricia Jean Jones; two sisters; two brothers; and her parents. Phyllis is survived by her children, Roberta (Bill) Pritchard of Nevada and Allen R. (Annette) Winnick, Jr. of Homer; grandsons, Brian (Christin) and Michael (Susan); six great-grandchildren, Brian Jr., Nicholas, Alexis, Zachary, Sydney and Mia; and four sisters, Jean (Bud) Rauch, Doris McWaters, Margaret Fleming and Marsha Butters. Jud E. Wolfe Jud E. Wolfe, 82, of Coldwater and formerly of Jerome, passed away Friday, February 8, 2013, at home. He was born March 15, 1930, in Butler Township to Jud and Queen (Turner) Wolfe. He was a 1948 graduate of Litchfield High School and had worked in construction. On August 7, 1999, he married Marian (Rice) Baranski and she survives in Coldwater. Also surviving are a daughter, Diana J. Betz of Orlando, Florida; two sons, Jud (Joy) Wolfe of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and Dennis Wolfe of Quincy; step-children; two sisters, Joyce (Walter) Carlson and Vivian (George) Crist, both of Jackson; three grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives and two brothers, Robert and Clarence Wolfe. George I. Swan, Sr. George I. Swan, Sr., went to be with his Lord while in the loving care of his family on Friday, February 8, 2013, at his residence in Homer. He was born October 4, 1924, in Wayne County, Michigan, to Leo and Mary Etta (Tucker) Swan, Sr. George served his country during WWII in the 36th Army Infantry in European Theater, receiving two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and the combat infantryman badge. He was honorably discharged from the Army in December 1945 and returned home. In 1947 he met the love of his life Joann Taylor, and they married in 1948. He was a journeyman union sheet metal worker for over 50 years. He was a member of St. Joe Baptist Church since 1969, life member of the V.F.W. and D.A.V., and was also a member of the Moose Lodge #676 and the American Legion for many years. George and his wife participated in a bowling league at the Homer bowling alley. He was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed camping in earlier years where he could spend time with his family, which throughout his whole life was his greatest joy. George is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Joann; daughters Brenda Vanrman, Marlene (Rich) Taft, Bev (Jerry) Snyder, Pam (Jeff) Leppek, Georgette (David) Wallac and Lana Swan; sons Chuck Swan and George I. (Schara) Swan, Jr.; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary (Alden) Tesch, Eleanor “Ellie” Benjamin and Jeanette (Art) Wilkinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Juanita Maurer, Clara Mae Eagen and Evelyn McRae; and brothers Charles, John and Leo Jr. Swan. Robert T. Dawson Robert T. Dawson, 90, of Homer, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2013. He was born on January 21, 1923, in Homer Township, to Rheo and Ethel (Avery) Dawson. Robert was a 1940 graduate of Homer High School. In 1943, he married Marie Frazier and they would share 70 wonderful years together. He went on to own and operate a milk pick-up and delivery route for Michigan Milk Producers. He was very active in the Calhoun County 4-H and was the one who originally initiated the 4-H livestock sales in the early ‘60s. Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing and traveling wherever his grandchildrens’ sporting events would take them. A sports fan himself, Robert was one of the original members of the Pulaski Rinky-dinks softball team. He was a role model for all, especially his own family who saw him as the “straw that stirred the drink.” Robert was one man who definitely earned the title, “World’s Greatest Grandpa.” He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; daughter, Penny Sue (Larry) Warner; son, Terry Dawson; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Neil; and a nephew, Richard “Dick” Snow. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr., Albion. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tim Marvil of Homer First Presbyterian Church officiating. Donna Marie Chamberlain Donna Marie Chamberlain, 85, of Homer, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013, at her home. She was born in 1927 to George and Teena McAdam. She was married to Russell Chamberlain, who preceded her in death. Donna was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She lived in Homer most of her life. She enjoyed and was a gifted artist. Donna worked side by side with her husband Russell on the family farm. She loved to read, travel and play bingo. Donna is survived by two sons, Donald (Kandy) Chamberlain and Steven (Pat) Chamberlain; a daughter, Judy Bildner; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Gladys Michael. Donna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; three brothers; a sister; and a son-in-law, Gary Bildner. Visitation for family and friends was Monday, February 25, at the J. Jeannette L. (Heath) Lear Jeannette L. (Heath) Lear, 75, of Haughton, Louisiana, passed away Friday, February 8, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was born November 6, 1937, to Glen and Laura (Beers) Heath. She grew up in Homer and graduated from Homer High School in 1956. Jeannette entered the Air Force right out of high school and served at Selfridge Air Force Base near Detroit. She met her husband, Jack Lear, at the base. He preceded her in death. Jeannette was proud to serve her country and loved spending time with her horses and grandchildren. Jeannette is survived by four children, Jackie, Jeff, Jon and Julie, all of Haughton; several grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Heath, of Homer. A memorial service was held February 16 at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel in Haughton, with the Rev. Gerry Woolman officiating. A U.S. Air Force Honor Guard performed the flag ceremony. He was born January 9, 1937, in Heerlen, The Netherlands, to Johan and Gerritge (Jacobs) van de Weerd, Sr. Johan attended a trade school in The Netherlands and immigrated to America when he was 17 years old. He became a tool and die maker and later established his own business, Johan van de Weerd Co, Inc. (JVDW). Later in life, Johan took an interest in the restoration of rare collectibles and monolithic boulders. He was a self-proclaimed “rock hound.” Survivors include two daughters, Christine Diane Guardascione of The Villages, Florida, and Jane Marie John of Clovis, California; three grandchildren, Gennaro Guardascione of Largo, Florida, and Michael Lee John and Jennifer Marie John of Clovis; and two sisters, Hendrika (Annie) Wolfe of Litchfield and Maria Gerdina Aleida (Rietje/Rita) Vamos of Albany, New York. Virginia A. Karmalski Virginia A. Karmalski, 96, of Albion, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013. She was born June 21, 1916, to Charles and Laura (Hamaker) Zenoniani in Gross, Kansas. In 1937, she married John F. Karmalski, who preceded her in death in 1988. Virginia had been a school teacher for the Homer Public Schools before her retirement. Virginia is survived by a sister, Ruby (Bud) Davis of Albion; two brothers, William (Dorothy) Zenoniani of Albion and Duane Lee (Carolyn) Zenoniani of Ft. Myers, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Audrey in 1978 and Ivadene in 1955. Marjorie Fern AcMoody Rossman Surrounded by family, Marjorie Fern AcMoody Rossman, 88, joined her husband Rex; parents Walton and Lucille (Ransford) AcMoody; and all her siblings, Gordon AcMoody, Robert AcMoody and Ruth Copeland in heaven on March 11, 2013, just one day short of her 89th birthday. Born March 12, 1924, she grew up a Branch County sharecropper’s daughter during the Depression. Although she raised her family in Litchfield, she was forever a Coldwater Cardinal. She graduated from CHS in 1942, an “A” student and member of the yearbook staff and went on to work as a secretary at Quality Spring in Coldwater. An active 4-Her, and highly skilled seamstress, she reigned as Branch County Fair Queen in 1941. She and her late husband Rex served as 4-H leaders in both Hillsdale and Branch counties. She was very active in Hillsdale County Extension and honored as their “Woman of the Year” in 2005. Her “Country Couples” connections and friends meant a great deal to her. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Litchfield. She married Rex in 1947 and he preceded her in death in 1990. They raised five children on a farm in Butler before moving north of Litchfield, Steve (Karen) Rossman, Jeff (Joyce) Rossman and Jeanine McIntosh, all of Litchfield; David (Cathy) Rossman of Jonesville and Val Rossman of Union City. Her granddaughters are Laurie Rice and Andrea Rossman and grandsons are Eric and Cagney Rossman and Danny, Darin and Brian McIntosh. She had four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Maria, Jesse and Damien. Phoebe and Sugar, apricot poodles, who were her loyal companions after she lost her husband, preceded her to heaven, as well. Marjorie and Rex owned and operated Rossman Builders through the ‘70s and ‘80s. She enjoyed camping with her family and “getting away” at the family hideout on Quaker Lake in Butler Township. She was an avid homemaker with a big garden and always did lots of preserving and canning for her family. A musician who played the piano, organ and dulcimer, she was her church organist at one time. In her retirement years, she became an oil painter and enjoyed winters with Rex on Pine Island, Florida. Visitation was held Friday at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Litchfield. Sharon D. Chamberlain Sharon D. Chamberlain, 76, long-time Litchfield and Yuma, Arizona, resident, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at home. Born March 12, 1937, in Jackson, she was the daughter of Aaron W. and Dorothea (VanPatten) Lincoln. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1955. She was Dr. F. C. Reigle’s receptionist for 15 years, operated a day care for 11 years and was a nursing assistant for Home Choices Health Care in Yuma. Sharon attended the Methodist church in Yuma, and was a member of the Women’s Moose Lodge there. On August 26, 1955, she married Fay Chamberlain, and he preceded her in death in 2003. Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Chamberlain and Steve Adams of Henderson, Nevada; two sons, Kirk (Linda) Chamberlain and Martin (Amy) Chamberlain, both of Litchfield; two sisters, Loretta Smith of Florida and Diane Woodard of Texas; one brother, Bill (Ann) Lincoln of Oregon; and four grandchildren, Tyler and Ryan Baldwin and Caleb and Rhys Chamberlain. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Carrie Whitt. Visitation was held Sunday. Funeral services were Monday at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Peter M. Gibson Peter M. Gibson, 88, of Lansing, passed away March 25, 2013 in Glendale, Arizona. Mr. Gibson was born August 4, 1924, in Flint, the son of the late Lee and Opal (Ecker) Gibson, Peter served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired from Oldsmobile engineering after 36 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wives, Veronica Mary Gibson in 2002 and LaRae Spannagel Gibson in 2008. Surviving to cherish his memory, are his children, Candy, Tom and Craig; grandchildren, Jamie, Christopher and Brigid; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and brothers, Bob and Don. She was born April 19, 1912, to the late Henry R. and Pearl Gregory Cunningham in Albion Township. She graduated from Homer High School. In 1937, she married Ray E. Fogel and worked with him at the Homer Index. She was a homemaker and member of the First Presbyterian Church. After wintering in Florida for a number of years, they sold their home in Homer and relocated to Florida. Following Ray’s death in 1998, Peg remained active and independent. She would never turn down a game of cards and was an enthusiastic bridge player. She bowled on the Hidden Valley Bowling League until age 96, and also drove her car until she was 99. She will be greatly missed by her children, Jeanne Chamberlain of Deland, Richard (Carol) Fogel of Tekonsha, and James (Bonnie) Fogel of Spring Lake; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her sister Ruth Hapgood and brother Cecil Cunningham. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Homer. Christian D. Warner Christian D. Warner, 50, of Homer, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born on July 21, 1962, to Charles and Sharron (Beyers) Warner in Norfolk, Virginia. Christian served his country in the U.S. Navy for six years. He worked as a journeyman electrician for G.M. in Lansing for eight years. He loved to take his nieces and nephews out to lunch, especially to Old Country Buffet, getting books and to get ice cream. Clifford James “Skip” Lawrence Clifford James “Skip” Lawrence, 64, of Tekonsha (formerly of Homer and St. Johns, Arizona), went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek. A graduate of Homer High School, Skip served in Vietnam in the 101st Airborne Division, He worked in construction, ranched and retired from the power plant in Arizona. Skip was a member of the American Legion and Church of God in Burlington. His hobbies included classic cars and being outdoors. Survivors include his wife, Beth (Taylor) Lawrence; a son, Christopher Lawrence of Texas; a sister, Carol Lawrence of Arizona; stepchildren, Don (Jean-ette) Russell of Ohio, Denise Neelis, Shelly (Rick) Lanphar, Beth (Gregg) Behnke, all of Michigan; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. John Michael Koch John Michael Koch, age 77, of Homer, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at his home. He was born May 3, 1935, to Leo A. and Isabella (Nelson) Koch in Babcock, on the family farm. On December 15, 1956, he married Kaye Jean Davis, who preceded him in death March 1, 1995. John served during the Korean War in the U.S. Marines. He had worked for Decker Manufacturing in Albion for 47 years. He was a member of the VFW in Homer; was an avid outdoorsman, hunting, fishing and working around the yard; he spent some years farming; and always enjoyed a good practical joke, mostly playing them himself. He will be dearly missed by a son, Michael Koch; daughters, Julie (John) Kacala, Kelly Scott and Johnna Koch; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Koch and Robert (Mary) Koch; and two sisters, Sally Daniels and Isabell (Russell) Richards. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Kaye; brothers Al, William and Joseph; sisters Betty, Leona, Mary and Mildred ;and son-in-law, Bill Scott. Visitation was Friday, May 3, with a Rosary being held at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Jarald R. Letts Jarald R. Letts, 73, of Quincy, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. Born July 28, 1939, in Marshall, he was the son of Fredrick and I. Lucile (Murdock) Letts. He had served in the U. S. Army and retired from Wells Equipment in Litchfield where he had been employed in the parts department and as a mechanic for many years. Jarald was a long-time member of the Girard United Methodist Church, had served as a trustee for many years, and was active with their annual hog roast. He was a member of the Merry Mixer Square Dance Club, the Antique Car Club of Branch County and worked with and drove the Amish construction crew. He enjoyed hunting with extended family and was an active woodworker and preserver of family antiques. On October 9, 1970, he married Yvonne Kyser, and she survives in Quincy. Also surviving are two daughters, Marcia (David) Knight of Quincy and Inez Peterson of Coldwater; two sons, Mark (Shawn) Rice of Mio and Kenneth (Pam) Letts of Canton; two sisters, Alice Faust of Vero Beach, Florida, and Joyce Abbeg of Coldwater; one brother, Charles (Marilyn) Letts of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Jenna Shoemaker. Funeral services were held Monday, May 6, at the Girard United Methodist Church, with Pastor Emily Beachy officiating. Thomas ‘Tom’ W. Nichols At age 70, Tom went to rejoin the love of his life Judy on May 3, 2013. Tom was born January 11, 1943, one of nine children born to Tommy and Polly (Crisp) Nichols. Tom was a retired employee of Fisher Body in Lansing. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with family. If a grandchild has a sporting event, that is where he could be found cheering them on. Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed being outdoors. Preceding him in death was his wife, Judith in June 24, 2010. Surviving are three children, Kim (Karl) Grant of Dimondale, Pam (Dave) Shafer of Duck Lake and Tony (Julie) Nichols of Grand Blanc; six grandchildren, Brooke (Randon) Gould, Taylor Grant, Drew and Lexi Shafer, Katelyn and T.J. Russell Carl Mills Russell Carl Mills, 96, of Homer, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the home he was born in surrounded by his family. Carl was born May 15, 1916, on the family farm in Homer Township to Russell Clark and Verna (Carman) Mills. He attended the Angnes Country School, and later graduated electrical school in Chicago. On August 10, 1938, he married Mildred Trylick in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him in death on May 10, 2011. Carl lived and farmed in the Homer and Litchfield area his whole life. Along with farming, he also worked as an electrician at Goodyear in 1940. In 1977, Carl was the Northeastern Calhoun County electrical inspector, which he did until the office closed in 1981. Carl had one of the first John-Deere self-propelled combines in Michigan, which was driven down from Lansing. He did a lot of custom combining in the area. He also did custom bailing, picking corn, silo filling, plowing and bulldozing. Carl enjoyed traveling to tractor and steam engine shows across the Midwest. He is survived by his children Mary (Roger) Imhof and Larry Mills, both of Homer; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Shelf of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter-in-law, Kathy Mills; and sisters Juanita Bender, Louise Woodliff and Edna Shoulders. A graveside service will take place at 11a.m. today (Wednesday, May 8, 2013) at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with Reverend Bill Holbrook officiating. Rex Harris Nevins Rex Harris Nevins (Papa), 76, passed away suddenly but peacefully Monday, May 6, 2013, in Frankfort. Rex was born July 24, 1936, in Lansing, the son of Robert H. and Illa M. (Frever) Nevins. He married Sue A. Steinman August 20, 1954, in Charlotte. She preceded him in death August 9, 2004. Also preceding him in death were his parents, son David Lee Nevins in October 1965, and his brother Ray Nevins in April 2013. Rex is survived by his daughters, Wendy (Michael) Pratley of Frankfort, Pamela Hoaglin of Salem, Ohio, and his sons Randy (Laurie) of Concord, Brian (Lori) of Marshall, Rex (Jaye) of Three Rivers and Mike (Kris) of Homer. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Robert Nevins, Roy Nevins and Gerald (Linda) Fetterman, all of Charlotte; brother-in-law, Francis (Frank) Steinman of Indiana; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Steinman of Illinois, several nieces and nephews; and his companion of eight years, Sue Stalder, of Mesa, Arizona, and Stockton, California. Rex spent most of his life in Michigan. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He worked at General Motors in Lansing for a few years before becoming a bread truck delivery driver and working his way up through the company, being promoted to regional manager of the Northern Michigan Region. He then purchased an IGA store, and later owned the auto body shop Nevins and Sons, both in Homer, where he also served the community as police commissioner, was on the fire department, served on the Village Council and as an emergency medical technician. He moved to Barton Lake, Indiana, where he worked for many years as park manager at Jellystone Park before retiring to Arizona in 1990. There he was employed as maintenance supervisor at Tower Point Resort until his full retirement in 2005. Rex enjoyed his life, working, watching sports, traveling, buying antiques and buying and selling cars. Later in his retirement, he enjoyed hiking his beloved Superstition Mountains near his home in Mesa, as well as walking the Arizona desert. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will dearly miss him. He was a devoted, loving, generous and caring man who touched everyone that was blessed to know him. Cremation has taken place, and his family will be holding a Celebration of Life open house at the Charlotte Senior Center in Charlotte June 15, 2013, from 1-3 p.m. Attendees are requested to use the west entrance. Dolores Dodes Dolores Dodes, 94, of Homer, formerly of Albion, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born April 7, 1919, in Eckford Township, Michigan, the daughter of William and Ruby (Bailey) Pell. On May 4, 1940, in Concord, Dolores was united in marriage to Maurice Dale Dodes, who preceded her in death January 13, 1996. She was a lifelong resident of the area, was a homemaker most of her life, and was a caregiver to many people. She and her husband delivered newspapers receiving multiple “Carrier of the Year” awards. She was a member of Caring Community Church, enjoyed sewing, playing the hammered dulcimer and enjoyed reading. Dolores is survived by four grandchildren, Natalie (Michael Coy) Kimber of Homer, Lorrie (Lloyd) Mosher of Homer, Scott (Debbie) Dodes of Portage and Ross (Bunny) Dodes of Covington, Tennessee; 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Bryan and Tyler Mosher, Morgan and Garrett Kimber, Gage and Sydney Coy, Dale Jackson Dodes, and Josh and Ryan Powers; daughter-in-law, Sandra (Cecil) McClelland of Homer; sister-in-law, Louise Wenzig of Iowa; and special friends, Bob and Audrey Ackley, Pat Konkol and Diana MacGregor. Charlotte E. Hepler Charlotte E. Hepler, age 101 of Homer, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, June 2. She was born on May 25, 1912 in Springfield, Missouri to Charles and Nora (Miller) Edwards. Charlotte graduated from Homer High School in 1930 and went to work for Ma Bell as telephone operator in the Albion, Tekonsha and Litchfield exchanges. On June 2, 1934, she married John Gordon Hepler, and he preceded her in death in 1990. Charlotte loved to travel, read, fish with her husband Gordon, play cards, tend her flower beds and watch the birds from her back porch. The grandchildren will remember her strength, sense of humor and the way she could always make you feel better. The family wishes to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the staff of Best Care Plus West whose loving care of Charlotte was greatly appreciated. Marie A. Hitz Marie A. Hitz, 94, of Homer passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born March 28, 1919, in Sylvania, Ohio, the daughter of Paul and Leola (Cory) Wilhelm. August 10, 1947, Marie was united in marriage to Frank Hitz, Jr. She was a machine operator at Marshall Brass, retiring at age 80 after 30 years of service. Marie enjoyed traveling, camping and especially loved the Upper Peninsula. She also enjoyed quilting and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Roger) Maples of Homer; a son, Frank Hitz, also of Homer; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; two brothers, Henry and Robert; and a sister, Mildred Sloan. A memorial service is planned for later this summer. Dorothy Delia Avery Dorothy Delia Avery passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 26, 2013, following a brief illness. She was born December 2, 1908, to Charles and Lula (Bayn) Holmes of Homer. She graduated from Homer High School in 1927, and received her teaching certificate from Calhoun County Normal. She taught at the Fisher Corner School in Homer Township for two years. She married Melvin Avery July 5, 1933, and he preceded her in death August 28, 1979. As a homemaker, she assisted her husband in farming. She resided in the Fisher’s Corner area of Homer Township most of her life and was active in the community. She organized the Lucky Clover 4-H Club in 1950 and served as its leader for many years. She was a member of the Willing Workers Club of Fisher Corners. Mrs. Avery was also a member of the Calhoun County Extension Club and the Farm Bureau Discussion Group. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Stella Chapter #140 Order of The Eastern Star and the Hanna Tracy Grant Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed traveling, flowers, area birds and crafts. She crocheted over 75 afghans to give to family and friends. In 1981, she was instrumental in organizing and hosting the annual Holmes family reunion, which continues. She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann (David) Keefer of Palo Alto, California, and a daughter-in-law, Helen Avery of Litchfield; six grandchildren, Kathy Chase, Wendy Chase, Matthew Snyder, Michael (Lynn) Avery, G. John, (Justine) Keefer and Talbot Keefer; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Shirley Gregg of Traverse City and Marjorie Bunnell of Canton. Many nieces and nephews also survive her. Along with her husband, Dorothy was also preceded in death by daughter Betty Chase and son, Richard James Avery; sisters Marie Norton, Doris Thomas, Grace Holmes, Marguerite Waggoner and Ruth Miller; brothers Kenneth Holmes and Gerald Holmes; and great-grandson Timothy Avery. Visitation for family and friends was held Monday, July 1, at 10:00 a.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion. A funeral service was held Monday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Tim Marvil of the Homer Presbyterian Church officiating. An hour of visitation preceded the funeral. Ketha Walkup Ketha (Nelligan) Walkup, 91, of Litchfield, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Liberty Haven Adult Foster Care in Allen. She was born October 6, 1921, in Litchfield, to Phillip and Maud (Thompson) Nelligan, and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1939. Ketha was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and in later years she attended the Litchfield Congregational Church. She was a member of the Rural Letter Carrier Auxiliary; and Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed cake decorating, knitting, sewing and playing golf. She married Paul A. Walkup April 12, 1940, and he preceded her in death in 2004. Survivors include her daughter, Connie (Dan) Bills of Litchfield; two sons, Bob (Iris) Walkup of Tustin; Jon (Joyce) Walkup of Deckerville; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Harry and Carl Nelligan. Funeral services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield, with the Reverends Clyde Wonders and Mike Murray officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Visitation was held Saturday at noon up until the time of the service at the funeral home. Ryan Lloyd Gilmore Ryan Lloyd Gilmore, 24, of Quincy, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at home. He was born October 12, 1988 in Coldwater to Robert “Jeff” Jeffery and Robin (Stevens) Gilmore. Ryan graduated from Homer High School in 2006 and was employed at Con-Agra Foods in Quincy. During his school years, Ryan was active in FFA and 4-H, where he showed animals at the Calhoun County Fair. He enjoyed music, attending concerts and spending time with his family and friends. He was also an avid U of M football fan. Survivors include his parents, Jeff and Robin Gilmore of Homer; two brothers, Caden and Jason, both of Homer; his significant other, Melanie Hall of Quincy; paternal grandmother, Pauline Curey of Litchfield; maternal grandmother, Carolyn Stevens of Litchfield; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lloyd “Buck” Gilmore, Richard Curey and James Stevens. Visitation was held Thursday from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield. Funeral services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Litchfield United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Tim Marvil officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Ronald A. Schaberg Ronald A. Schaberg, 64, passed away at his home in Battle Creek Friday, June 19, 2013. He was born in Albion to Robert and Mildred Schaberg. He had lived in the Homer and Battle Creek area for most of his life. Ron was an outgoing people-person who enjoyed being with others and family get-togethers. He was an avid MSU fan, but also liked the Detroit Lions and Tigers. He enjoyed music, dancing and following politics. Some of Ron’s fondest memories were those of growing up on the farm. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and love him. He is survived by his son Scott Schaberg and granddaughter Leah Schaberg; former wife Marcia Schaberg; sister Karen (Steve) Wells; and aunts, uncles and many cousins. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Allison Renee. His funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, located at 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with Pastor Mark Van Valin officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Mary Houchen Mary Houchen, 84, of Litchfield, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Drews Place of Hillsdale. She was born January 6, 1929, in Marshall, to Donald and Madeline (VandenHeede) Harrington. Mary was dedicated to the youth in her community. She worked as secretary at Litchfield Elementary School for 22 years, drove a school bus six years, was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and was active with the 4-H baking club. She also belonged to the Litchfield United Methodist Church, Litchfield Garden Club and Pedro Card Club. She married Robert Houchen October 23, 1948, and he preceded her in death December 25, 2000. She will be sadly missed by her family, including three daughters, Martha (Martin) Ladd of Spring Lake, Vicki (Tom) Busby of Texas and Lori (Phil) Mindala of Missouri; two grandchildren, Michelle (Bryan) Sandberg and Mitchell Mindala; and two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Taylor Sandberg; one sister, Susan (Dave) Fhaner of Marshall; three brothers, Paul Harrington, Phillip (JoAnne) Harrington, all of Marshall, and Gerald (Barbara) Harrington of Reed City; two sisters-in-law, Donna (Robert) Spier and Dorothy Forshey, both of Florida. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother and an infant daughter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders and Pastor Julie Elmore officiating. Jane H. Prater Jane H. Prater, age 91, of Litchfield formerly of Tekonsha, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, at her residence with her family present. She was born January 18, 1922, in Salyersville, Kentucky, the daughter of Mary (Holbrook) Sparks and Millard Sparks. On April 18, 1942, she married Thurman Prater in Kentucky and moved to Michigan in 1952. Mrs. Prater was a seamstress by trade, a mother of 11 children, 28 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren and loved them all dearly. She loved to make quilts, had many flowers, spent time going to church seeing her friends and family, and shopping at Goodwill. Jane is survived by her daughters Mary (David) Doolittle of Tekonsha, Beulah (Billy) Sharpe of Albion and Della (Ken) Dormer of Colon; sons Erve (Sarah) Prater of Montpelier, Ohio, Abe (Betty) Prater of Litchfield, Adis (Jeannie) Prater of Hellier, Kentucky, Forester (Louann) Prater of Fulton, Chester Prater of Bronson and Vern (Leann) Prater of Sherwood. She was preceded in death by her husband Thurman, daughter Christine, son Albert, her five siblings, and her mother and father. She was born February 24, 1942, to Orin A. and MildredWilma (Stephens) Reed in Coldwater. She married Lester Blowers September 3, 1961, in Eckford. Dorothy was a loving, caring, sweet, “rock” of Lester’s life. She enjoyed crocheting, canning and playing cards, and she liked her computer and really enjoyed her Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers. Dorothy is survived by her husband Lester Blowers of Springfield, sons Andrew (Dawn) Blowers and Arthur Blowers, daughter Karen (Terry) Hazel, grandson Jeffrey (Dawn) Blowers, granddaughter Jessica Hazel, sister - Jane (Duane) Nearnberg and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister. Carl L. Balyeat Carl L. Balyeat, 70, of Inverness, Florida, died August 8, 2013, under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. Carl was born September 28, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Carl J. and Margaret (Bovan) Balyeat. After graduation from Homer High School, he served the country in the United States Navy. He married his wife Linda November 23, 1963. He worked in management in Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and Florida at The Villages. He held various positions in Citrus County and as bus driver for Lecanto Schools. He was an active member of the Florida Foxtrotter Horse Association. He loved trail riding, camping with his “horsey friends” and showing his beautiful buckskin foxtrotter “Bucky” in the show ring. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years, Linda Balyeat; his son Brian Balyeat of Ladylake, Florida; daughters Tanya M. Balyeat of Tavares, Florida and Melissa R. Pearce of Austin, Texas; brothers Rodney Balyeat of Tecumseh and Gregg Balyeat of Grass Lake; grandchildren Dylan Lane, Brittney L’Huillier, Austin King and Sawyer King; his brother-in-law James (Sherry) Dye and sisters-in-law Janice (Mike) Braun and Rebecca Morse; numerous nieces and nephews. John Phillip Sanger John Phillip Sanger, Lt. USN Ret., 76 of Litchfield, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013, in Evansville, Indiana. He was born November 2, 1936, in Flint to George and Marie (Mills) Sanger. John graduated from Trenton High School and the US Navy's NESEP program at Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired as a lieutenant in the US Navy and moved to Litchfield in 1976. For a time he was on Litchfield's Planning Commission, a member of the American Legion and recently was inducted into Hillsdale County's Veteran's Hall of Fame. For years John taught at Jackson Community College, repaired TV's for over 25 years and was a lifetime HAM radio operator as W8QGP. Survivors include his wife, Delores (Snyder) Sanger, whom he married June 2, 1962; five children, John Paul (Janet) Sanger, and Cody, Jordan, Abby, Emma, Levi, Josiah and Liberty of Litchfield; Beth (Joe) Chapman and Matthew, Kyle and Julia of Eaton Rapids; Brendan (Torrie) Sanger and Rowan of Litchfield; Teresa (Patrick) Heckenlively and Victoria, Noah, Grace and Olivia of Hillsdale; Mark (Kathy) Sanger and Lydia, Mark, Lindsay and Lauren of Winston-Salem North Carolina; two exchange daughters, Katri Hokkanen of Finland and Angelika Jahreis of California; two sisters, Frances Sanger of Flat Rock and Eileen Lichy of Trenton; and two brothers, Joseph Sanger of Lansing and Paul Sanger of California. Beatrice Calhoun Beatrice Calhoun, 65, of Marshall, lovingly known as “Bee,” passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013, at her home. She was born March 4, 1948, in Tip Top, Kentucky, to the union of Amos and Rebecca Coburn. She married Chester Calhoun June 20, 1964, and they enjoyed 49 years of marriage. Bee was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was most important to her. Her roots were also important to her as she looked forward to her annual trip to Tip Top for the Coal Camp reunion and to visit with family and friends. She was an avid gardener and loved humming birds. Bee attended East Eckford Church. She is survived by her husband, Chet Calhoun, three sons, Doug Calhoun, Jeff (Tammie) Calhoun and Brian (Wendy) Calhoun; grandchildren, Travas, Evan, Aubrey, Ashley, Cody, Charlotte and Colten; a brother, Earl; sisters, Sue, Dixie, Mert and Delma; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Sue Taylor and Margo Buckner; and her loving companion and faithful friend, Buddy. Glen Miller Glen Miller passed away after a long, wonderful life on Saturday, August 17, 2013. He was born on December 30, 1916, in Morley, to Orville and Ollie Hook Miller. He was raised on a farm in Stanwood, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1934-1936, and moved to Albion in 1936, where he met Mary Kittinger. They were married in 1941 and moved to Homer in 1957. Glen worked for the Calhoun County Road Commission from 1956 until his retirement in 1981. He also worked part-time for Folk Oil Company for several years. He is survived by sons Robert, David (Chris) and Richard; daughters, Mary Lou (Don) Tracey and Marty Burris; grandchildren, Mike (Sharon) Miller, Karin (Bob) Elliott, John and Jessica Miller and Kerry Tracey; and great-grandchildren Matthew and Ashley Miller, and Alexis Elliott. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Miller, in December 1997; brothers Ivan and Albin; and sisters Leah and Emma Jane. Visitation hours will be held Thursday, August 22, from 10 -11 a.m. followed by a short memorial service at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive in Albion. There will be a private burial service for the family only immediately following the service. Anna Rowley Anna Rowley, 99, of Marshall and formerly of Homer, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at Whispering Meadows AFC in Marshall. She was born December 2, 1913, in Sheridan Township, to Norman and Mary (Buskie) Rowley. Anna was a life-long area resident and had worked as a housekeeper, caregiver and in food service. Traveling and gardening were her favorite activities. Survivors include her nephew, Roger Skinner of Albion, and her niece, Linda Kilbourne of Marshall. Neal K. Mittelstadt Neal K. Mittelstadt, 48, of Coldwater, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the Laurels of Coldwater. Neal was the son of Bruce and Charlotte (Ellenberger) Mittelstadt, born April 13, 1965, in Bluffton, Indiana. Neal had worked at Eckrich in Quincy and Donelly Printing, formerly Moore Business Forms, in Angola, Indiana. He was a 1983 graduate of Homer High School. Neal was a former president and active participant in the Bass Assassins, and he loved to hunt and fish. John Michael John W. Michael, 71, of Homer, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at his home with his loving family by his side. John was born October 1, 1941, to Forrest and Flora (Heisler) Michael in Homer. He married Beverly (Ambler) August 27, 2005, who survives. John was a graduate of Homer High School. He worked at the gas company until his retirement. He enjoyed playing golf and hunting. He also enjoyed following the Homer High School sports and the Detroit Tigers. John and Bev also enjoyed wintering in Florida in their fifth wheel. John is survived by his wife Beverly Michael; sons, Brent (Susan) Michael and Scott (Kaycee Owens) Michael; daughter Emily (Shareef) Simaika; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Joyce (Don) Frarey and Maudie (Tom) Evans; and several nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends was held September 6 at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, located at 811 Finley Drive, Albion. A memorial service was September 7 at the funeral home, with Pastor Tim Marvil officiating. Julia Kathleen Nagel Julia Kathleen (Pinke) Nagel, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Drew’s Place of Hillsdale. She was born November 3, 1925, in Detroit, to John and Julia Pinke, and then moved to Ida around the age of 6. She was a 1943 graduate of Ida High School and, after graduating, she worked for Monroe State Bank. She was an active member in 4-H, Glee Club and enjoyed singing in the church, particularly at weddings. She married Lester Bernard Nagel, June 14, 1952. The couple moved to Bronson, then to Tekonsha where they called it home for most of their 58 years of marriage until Lester’s death. She liked to cook, garden, sew, and visit with family and friends. She was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and taught religious education there for many years. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She loved singing, doing her daily Bible readings, telling stories and, most of all, spending time with her family. Julia is survived by sons Joseph (Sheryl) Nagel of Homer, and Marten Nagel and Michael Nagel both of Tekonsha; daughters Gladys (Dan) Gibbons of Ann Arbor, Mary (Sidney) Shakinis of Muskegon, Ruth (Dennis) DeVos of Casnovia, Rose (Rich) O’Donnell of Mentor, Ohio, Linda (Alex) Tatar of Marshall and Leslie (Greg) Reagle of Homer; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester Nagel; three children, John Nagel, Joyce Ciotta and Theresa Ann Nagel, who died at birth; and one sister, Rose (Pinke) Nieset. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, from 4-7 p.m., with the rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Putnam’s of Tekonsha. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for today (Wednesday), at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Union City, with Reverend Father Dan Doctor officiating. Dorotha L. Nichols Dorotha L. Nichols, 91, of Homer, died Thursday, September 12, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family. Nichols was born April 21, 1922, in Marshall Township, to Jacob and Alice (Pomeroy) Maisner. She attended Marshall Schools. She married Bruce Nichols October 12, 1962. He preceded her in death May 6, 1998. Nichols was the cafeteria supervisor for Homer Community Schools for many years until retiring in 1984. She also worked at Karchers Market for many years. She was a life member of the Homer VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, working on crossword puzzles, golfing and bowling. She is survived by her children Judy Waffle of Burlington, Raymond (Vickie) Waisner of Brown Wood, Texas, Karen Sprague of Homer, Linda (Ken) Herman of Burlington, Kevin Nichols of Homer; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Harry Maisner of Okemos, Mary Linton of Homer, and Joyce Dryer of Roanoke, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Donna Hampton in 2011, grandson Chad Geer in 1989, and seven siblings. Visitation took place at the Craig K. Wallace E. “Butch” Lons Wallace E. “Butch” Lons, 71, of Homer, died Thursday evening, September 12, 2013, after being stricken in Concord, while spending an evening out with his wife. Lons was born October 9, 1941, in Homer, to Wallace E. and Viola (Bronson) Lons. He had been a life-long resident of Homer and was a graduate of Homer High School. He continued his education attending diesel engine and heavy equipment classes in North Carolina. He also studied hydraulics at Kellogg Community College. He married the former Patricia Ann Kellogg in Albion October 16, 1965, with a double ring ceremony at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Butch had been employed as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator for the Calhoun County Road Commission. He had operated out of the Albion location, retiring in the early 2000s, following 34 years of service. He enjoyed his job attending to the many tasks presented to him using the heavy equipment. He also enjoyed operating the snowplows. Other prior employment included Burman Leasing in Albion, the Aeroquip Company in Albion and as a teenager, working at his uncle’s Speed Shop in Jackson. Butch was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many activities. He enjoyed archery and trap shooting, and camping trips to Twin Pines. He loved hunting deer, but many times he would just watch as the big one walked by, admiring its beauty and grace. Butch also enjoyed working on and rebuilding antique tractors. He had served on the Homer Fire Department for over 30 years, at one time serving as the assistant chief. He was also very involved in the upkeep and maintenance of the trucks for many years. Butch was a loving husband and father. One of the greatest joys of his life was when he became a grandfather. His grandson, Frank, always brought a smile to his face and a special twinkle in his eye. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pat; a daughter, Dr. Tammy (John) Lons-Laskey of Tekonsha; a grandson, Frank Benjamen Laskey; a brother, Calvin (Judy) Lons of Homer; and nephews, Andy (Traci) Lons and Sam (Denise) Lons. The family received friends Sunday, September 15, at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Marshall. A memorial service to celebrate the gift of his life was held Monday, September 16, at the funeral home. George H. Thacker George H. Thacker, 57, of Litchfield, formerly of Homer and Albion, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013, at his home. He was born August 19, 1956, to Ervin and Mary Thelma (Stalker) Thacker in Albion. George was an honest man with a heart of gold. He loved going to flea markets, collecting coins and had a love for history. George is survived by his son Carl (Jill) Haeske, sisters Naomi Thacker-Newsome, Bethelene (Ambrose) Gillespie and Michelle Maynard, a sister-in-law, Judy Thacker-Wren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Wayne Lee Wildt Wayne Lee Wildt, 68, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center, Leesburg, Florida. He was born in Albion and lived in Homer for a number of years. Wayne and his wife, Josie, moved to Leesburg a year ago. He spent most of his life working the land as a farmer in Michigan. He also had a 15 year career as a corrections officer for the Jackson State Prison in Michigan. He belonged to numerous clubs and will be fondly remembered as a man who always had a joke and a warm smile. He was also an immense sports fan who always cheered for Michigan State, Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers. He is survived by his loving wife of four years, Josie; stepsons David (Yvette) Riker, New Orleans; and Billy (Tonya) Wilson; stepdaughters Cindy (Bill, deceased) Kirkbride, Teri (Eric) Fogel, Cathi (Louie) Kroul, Joan (Richard, deceased) VanGorder, ReNae (Jeff) Anderson and Ruth (Darian) O’Dell, all of Michigan; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Ruth; brothers, Maurie and Rex Wildt; and first wife, JoAnn Riker. Carolyn June Sayer Carolyn June Sayer, 80, of Tekonsha, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. She was born in Marshall to Robert and Irene (Fountain) Pemberton, June 25, 1933. She married Kenneth Sayer April 24, 1954. He preceded her in death April 21, 1995. She is survived by daughters Cathy (Roger) Smith of Litchfield and Zenna Sayer of Tekonsha; a son, Cy (Diane) Sayer of Litchfield; grandchildren, Chad (Andrea) Wilson, Brian (Billie) Wilson, and Eric (Rachelle) Wilson, all of Litchfield, and Josh Sayer of Virginia; and great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Tyler and Paige Wilson; Kelsey, Kenzie and Bo Branham, Marysa and Wesley Wilson, all of Litchfield, and Luke, Adele and Sophie Sayer of Virginia. Carolyn worked at Murphy’s Dime Store, Oaklawn Hospital, Brooks Rupture Appliances and Tekon Truck Stop. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, and great-grandchild, as well as traveling, reading, watching old movies, and loved knitting mittens and scarfs for all the family. Preceding her in death were her parents and step-dad, Paul Armstrong. Cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Family was assisted by Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater. Judith A. Noakes Judith (Judy) A. Noakes, 75, of Albion, passed away Monday, October 7, 2013, at her home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Judy was born to Harold and Bernadene Baum May 14, 1938, in rural Springport Township. She is survived by her loving husband DeVere of 56 years; four children, Doreen (James) Boyer, Debra (Kevin) Huffman, John (Jeanette) Noakes and Phil (Debra) Noakes; seven grandchildren, Jason, Amber, David, Justin, Sarah, Amanda and Madison; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Gracen, Jace and Reagan; and two sisters, Betty (Clair) Peters and Janice (Carl) Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents of Marshall. Judy was a very active farm wife. She was a member of Albion VFW Post 3672 Auxiliary for 55 years, serving as president for 10 years; a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) for 49 years, where she held numerous offices; a member of the American Legion Post 55 in Albion; a member of Fredonia Grange in Marshall; a member of National Farmers Union; and a member of the United Methodist Church of Litchfield, where she held several offices. She was employed for 32 years with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier and Postmaster. Judy had many friends and relatives and will be sadly missed by them. Marion Miller Marion Miller, 86, of Homer, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Tendercare of Marshall. He was born on February 18, 1927, to Rolland and Rita (Knuth) Miller in Albion Township at home. He married Joan R. Miller August 6, 1950, at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek. Marion attended Albion schools and graduated from Washington Gardner High School in 1945. He went on to work at Millers Ice Cream in Eaton Rapids after high school. In 1949, he moved home to work on the family farm, which he has done ever since. During the winter months of 1950-1955, he worked at Union Steel. Marion had been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion since he was baptized July 3, 1927, and confirmed April 6, 1941. He also served as an elder. He was a member of the Jr. Farm Bureau, Progressive Farmer, Friendship League, the NFO, the MMPA, South Albion Community Club, Albion Community Hospital Service League, American Agriculture Movement and the Burnham Brook Calhoun County Senior Citizens Club - where he loved to dance! Marion enjoyed spending time with family, farming, milking cows, dancing and playing cards. He loved to travel. Two of his favorite moments were going to the Rose Bowl Parade and the cruise to Alaska with his wife. He is survived by three sons, Charles (Paula) Miller, Curt (Karen) Miller and Chris Miller, all of Homer; three daughters, Cindy (Jerry) Irvin of Homer, Carol Miller of Marshall, and Connie (Charlie) Clines of Battle Creek; 11 grandchildren, Amy (Dave) Gillis and Kristen (Andrew) Sommers both of Homer, Jennifer (Matthew) Sullivan of Marshall, Rebecca (Jason) Fry of Union City, Heather Miller (Alex Smith) of Ceresco, C.J. Ervin Ratliff Ervin Ratliff, 75, of Homer passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born in Garrett, Kentucky, April 25, 1938, to Sam N. and Virgie (Pratt) Ratliff. Ervin married Juanita Fay Perry and they were married for 55 wonderful years. They had five children and three preceded him in death. Ervin was a very loving husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very proud of all of them. He loved fishing, hunting and bowling. Ervin was the secretary of the Homer Bowling Association for several years. He liked watching baseball, football, Nascar and wrestling. Ervin retired from Die Cast Corp, in Jackson, after 37 years of service. Ervin is survived by his wife Juanita Fay Ratliff of Homer; sons Garvin (Lolita) Ratliff of San Diego, California, and Levin “Lee” Ratliff of Northport, Florida; six grandchildren, Nate (Emily) Ratliff of Anchorage, Alaska, Adrianne Hillier (Craig) of Concord, Navin Ratliff, Katz (Elizabeth) of Colon, Kevyn (Autumn) Hanes of Jonesville, Arianna and Tessa Ratliff of Northport, Florida; four great-grandchildren Colin Hillier, Carter Hillier, Lilleyonna Ratliff-Katz and Addilyn Hanes. Ervin had 11 brothers and sisters and seven preceded him in death. Karen Wheat Karen Ann Wheat, 57, of Homer passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013, in Battle Creek at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. She was born March 13, 1956, to Richard and Marion (Karr) Amsbaugh in Hillsdale. She married Steven Wheat October 9, 1976. Karen graduated from Homer High School in 1974. Steve and Karen just recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary. She worked at the Insurance Place in Homer for 35 years and was also secretary of the Village of Homer Zoning Board of Appeals, where she served several years. Karen loved reading, traveling and watching plays at the Barn Theatre in Augusta, where she and Steve attended every play for the past 16 years. Karen, who will be remembered by many for her smile and personality, is survived by her husband Steve, daughter Jenny (Rob) Jordan, son Dane (Brianna) Wheat, grandson Colton Wheat, mother Marion, father Dick, brothers Rick Amsbaugh and Mark (Chris) Amsbaugh and sister Susan (Gregg) Shores. Wayne Russell Radee Wayne Russell Radee, 89, of Desert Hot Springs, California, formerly of Homer, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013, at the Manor Care, Hospice Odyssey House of Palm Springs, California. Wayne was born March 30, 1924, in Albion, to Harry and Margaret (Kreger) Radee. He married Adelia “Dee” Earl January 22, 1946. She preceded him in death November 7, 1979. Wayne joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served until 1946 during World War II. He retired in 1983 from the State of Michigan Department of Corrections after 31 years of service. He was a member of Moose Lodge #156 of Jackson, and a life member of the VFW Post #9411 in Homer. He was also a member of American Legion Post #1000 of Desert Hot Springs, founding member of the American Air Museum of Britain, Association of Naval Aviation Incorporated, founding member of the Air Museum Planes of Fames, lifetime member of Palm Springs Air Museum, Flying Leathernecks Historical Foundation, Experimental Aircraft Association and various other air museums across the United States. Next to his family, aviation was his life’s passion. Wayne is survived by a son, Wayne (Karen) Radee II; daughter, Gloria Sims; brother, Harry Radee; sister, Shirley (Elden) Winchell; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews. Steven M. Katz Steven M. Katz of Jackson passed away Friday, November 1, 2013, at home with his family by his side, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Connie; brother, Doug (Patty) Katz of Minnesota; stepfather, Bob Adams of Parma; and several nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry. Steve was a tool and die maker by trade, and worked at Kelsey-Hayes (TRW) for 29 years. He retired as Global Prototype Manager for ABS Systems in 2007. Steve was an avid boater and was happiest when on the water enjoying a beautiful, sunny day. Steve’s wishes were for cremation. Melvin Gene Blonde Melvin Gene Blonde, 85, of Litchfield Township, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born March 1, 1928, in Litchfield Township, to Gerald and Irene (Wilcox) Blonde and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1947. Gene was a self-employed truck driver and was employed by Simpson Industries for 30 years. He was also a farmer and raised spotted hogs. He was active in the 4-H swine barn at the Hillsdale County Fair for 25 years. He also belonged to the I.O.O.F. and coached Little League ball teams for many years. Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Minar) Blonde, whom he married December 24, 1949; two sons, Craig (Allison) Blonde of Homer and Kevin Blonde of Litchfield; a sister, Joan Kahle of Portage; grandchildren, Lisa (Dennis) Hart of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Evan Blonde of Homer; and step-great-granddaughter, Shannon Brennan. Gene was preceded in death by his daughter, Carron Houchen, and brothers Charles, Marion and Robert Blonde. Visitation was Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield. Harvey Gould Baker Harvey Gould Baker, 84, of Concord, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 8, 2013. He was born July 9, 1929. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Myrtie Baker (Button); daughters, Linda Hagerty (Mike Cogswell), Patricia Winans (Don) and Kay Douglas (Scott); son, Charles Baker (Millie); 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His work and family were his hobbies. He spent his life making sure they were cared for and safe. He worked hard as a crane operator and was self-employed, moving heavy machinery until he was well into his 70s with his son and grandsons. He was a racing buff along with his grandsons. He loved helping his son with his racing career. He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice Baker Sr. and Marion Winterstein; brothers, Calvin Baker, Maurice Baker Jr. and Dale Smith (Janie). Eugene “Gene” Samuel Ballinger Eugene “Gene” Samuel Ballinger passed away Monday, November 4, 2013, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born December 9, 1941, to George and Louise (Wintersteen) Ballinger. He worked in foundries for 54 years. He was a great husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; three brothers; a sister; and a son, Eugene “Sam” Samuel Ballinger, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Merica) Ballinger; two sons, George and Susan (Porter) Ballinger of Homer, Danny and Julie (Simmons) Ballinger of Florida; a daughter, Janet Ballinger of Homer; a sister Larry and Pamela (Ballinger) Harris of Spring Arbor; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He will be missed very much.

Patricia Grace Blonde Patricia Grace Blonde, 83, of Litchfield, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater. She was born October 5, 1930, in Clarendon Township to Mason and Stella (Smith) Minar. Pat graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949 and worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She also served her community as the Litchfield Township Treasurer for 12 years, Hillsdale County Commissioner for 10 years, and Litchfield BPW Club member. Pat was an active member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church, the UMW and she served as a church board member. She married Melvin Gene Blonde December 24, 1949. He preceded her in death November 3, 2013. Survivors include two sons, Craig (Allison) Blonde of Homer and Kevin Blonde of Litchfield; two grandchildren, Lisa (Dennis) Hart of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Evan Blonde of Homer; step-great-granddaughter, Shannon Brennan; and three sisters, Linda Maddock of Rockford, Illinois; Sally Pritchard of Coldwater and Charlotte Hendrickson of Mattawan. In addition to her husband, Pat was preceded in death by her daughter, Carron Houchen, and her sister, Jane Taylor. Visitation is scheduled for today (Wednesday) from 5-8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield. Elton J. “Bud” Miller, Jr. Elton J. “Bud” Miller, Jr., 86, of Litchfield, passed away Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He was born June 6, 1927, in Clio - the son of Elton and Tressa (Raymond) Miller, Sr. Bud graduated from Litchfield High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. He was self-employed for many years as owner of Miller Plumbing and Heating. He retired from Finishing Touch in Litchfield where he was the maintenance supervisor. Bud was a longtime member of the IOOF, he loved to cook and he was an accomplished woodworker and gardener. He married Betty L. (Hess) June 21, 1952, and she preceded him in death May 15, 2004. Survivors include two sons, Terry Miller of Litchfield and Steve “Mick” (Crystal) Miller of North Adams; five grandchildren, Joshua, Ashley, Lexi and Sierra Miller and Kylie Jo Wedel. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Douglas Miller, and his grandson, Jefferey Miller. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Ola Rogers Ola Rogers, 91, of Homer, died Thursday, November 28, 2013, at the Schaffer Adult Foster Care home in Battle Creek. Mrs. Rogers was born May 24, 1922, in Litchfield, to George and Valeria (Flenar) Burk. She graduated from Litchfield High School. She married William J. Rogers August 12, 1940, and he preceded her in death in July 2001. Mrs. Rogers was a homemaker, staying home to raise her family. She was an active member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Homer, Albion and Marshall area. She enjoyed working in her flower beds, embroidery and spending time with her family. She is survived by her sons, William (Rhonda) Rogers of Battle Creek and Daniel (Carol) Rogers of Belmont; three grandchildren, Diane (Bill) Cryenne, of Alberta, Canada, Neissa (Tyler) McIntyre of Battle Creek and Jeffery (Barbara) Rogers of Dowling; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Smith of Coldwater. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two granddaughters, Carmen McManus and Amy Kendall. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Albion Saturday, December 7, with Kurt Butler officiating. A private interment took place Sunday, December 1, at the Whig Cemetery, in Butler Township, with Mr. Mark Davids officiating. Olin B. Hinkle Olin B. Hinkle, 85, longtime Litchfield resident, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013, at Drew’s Place of Hillsdale. Born November 3, 1928 in Adams Township, he was the son of Dean Duane and Bertha Maye (Todd) Hinkle. Olin graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1947 and worked at Allied Products plant #3 before being called to serve in the Korean Conflict. He earned a Bronze Star Medal, Korean Service Ribbon with two bronze service stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and was in the KMAG unit (Korean Military Advisory Group). He married Wilhelmina (Werner) September 4, 1955, and she survives. Olin worked at Spartan Electronics of Jackson and McGraw Edison while learning the real estate business. In 1968, Olin and Wilhelmina established the Olin Hinkle Realty offices. Later, they began selling farm insurance, which led to the purchase of an insurance agency. Surviving along with his wife are son, Greg (Jeri) Hinkle of Grand Rapids; daughters, Sherrie (Randy) Iles of Allen and Annette Hinkle of Elkridge, Maryland; grandsons, Nickolas Hinkle and Steven Iles; great-grandsons, Dominic and Alexander Hinkle; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers (Duane and Jack Hinkle), and sisters (Delma Randall and Gene Dohm). Olin served his local community as Litchfield Village Assessor, Litchfield Village Trustee, Chairman of Public Works, was instrumental in bringing sewer lines to the village, and helped Litchfield gain the status of “city.” He also served as city of Litchfield treasurer, tax collector, board of review, planning commission and acting city manager. During 14 years as a Hillsdale County commissioner, he served as chairman and vice-chairman and chaired committees of finance, personnel and equalization. He served on the Board of Michigan Association of Counties Taxation Committee, Hillsdale County Social Services Board, Hillsdale County Ambulance Board, Region II Training Consortium Board, and Branch/Hillsdale District Health Board. Olin was honored by the South Central Substance Abuse Commission for being their longest-serving member. He received a special tribute, signed by Gov. John Engler, honoring him for his commitment to public service and his dedication to making his community a better place to live, work and raise a family. For many years, he supported the 4-H small and large animal sales. Olin was the 2006 recipient of the Hillsdale County Veterans Association Lifetime Achievement Award. He was an active member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church and Hillsdale County Republicans. He loved his family, politics and horse pulls. Donna Louise Goodrich Donna Louise Goodrich, 79, passed away peacefully at home December 2, 2013. She was born in rural Albion to Clifford and Eva (Howard) Wendorf September 2, 1934, and has lived her entire life in this area, graduating from Marshall High School in 1951. She married her high school sweetheart Earl Goodrich September 13, 1952, in Eckford. Family meant everything to her, and she doted on her husband and helped him with his store, the Bargainette, a fixture in downtown Marshall for many years. She was extremely smart, and was an early pioneer of women working in data processing, earning her college degree in the late 1960s. She was employed at Progressive Dynamics as their data processing manager for over 40 years before retiring to enjoy lake living at the cottage she and Earl had purchased in the mid 1960s and had raised their family in. Her many gardens were her leisure-time passion, and her home at Lyon Lake was always a beautiful splash of color. She was an active member of the Lyon Lake United Methodist Church and was a proud supporter of the campaign to repair and replace the stained glass windows. She was extremely proud of all her grandchildren and their many accomplishments, and her greatest joy was attending their various activities as they grew up. She is survived by her husband, Earl Ronald Goodrich; four children, Denise (Werner) Haschke of Concord, Rhonda (W. Michael) Allen of Mancelona, Cynthia (Rocky) Newsome of Marshall, and Earl (Marcia) Goodrich II of East Lansing; grandchildren, Martin (Dorothy) Haschke of San Francisco, California, Eric (Nicole) Haschke of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Adam (Lynn) Haschke of Phoenix, Arizona, Laura (Lee) Naplin of Vicksburg, Sandra (Nick) DeVito of Vicksburg, Bradford Parker of Ventura, California, Lindsay Parker of Sydney, Australia, Heather Parker of Washington D.C., Nathan Goodrich and Danielle Goodrich of East Lansing, Jessica Arnold of Marshall and Aaron Newsome of Marshall; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan (Keith) Whitlock of Arkansas; an aunt, Bernice Teachout; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Ethel Mae Wendorf and Carrol Doyle. A visitation with family present was held Friday, December 6, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, 723 US 27 North, Marshall. A funeral service was held Saturday, December 7, at the funeral home, with Pastor Tim Marvil officiating. Robert Burton Mains Robert Burton Mains, age 73, of Kentwood, formerly of Lansing and Brighton, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, December 4, 2013, surrounded by his family. Bob was born September 21, 1940, to Burton and Meda (Post) Mains in Albion. He grew up in Litchfield and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1958. He later graduated from Ferris State University in 1964. Bob worked at Ford Motor Company-Lansing District Sales Office and Ford Export at their Wixom office for 14 years before joining Duthler Truck Center in 1978 where he worked for 22 years as sales manager. After retirement, Bob worked several part-time jobs, the most recent as parts driver at M&K Truck Sales. A longtime member of South United Methodist Church, Bob was also a lifetime member of the Doric Lodge #342 of the F&A Masons, a 40 year member of the Scottish Rites of Grand Rapids, member and volunteer at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo since 2002, and had a lifelong interest in genealogy, tracing ancestors back to Ireland and Scotland. Bob felt fortunate that he had achieved many of his lifelong dreams, including visiting relatives in Northern Ireland several times, attending the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and sharing Hazel’s dream of going to Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burton S. and Meda Mains; and in-laws, Roy and Louise Woodliff. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him, but especially by his wife of 50 years, Hazel; his daughters, Barbara (Alan) Windsor, Susan (Kurt) Heemstra and Nancy (Mark) Brower; grandchildren, Jeff, Brett and Jeneve Windsor, Madeline and Evan Heemstra, and Jacob, Aidan, Maggie and Molly Brower; sister-in-law, Verna (John) Kruse; brother-in-law, Edward (Frances) Woodliff; several nieces and nephews; special cousins; and many friends. She attended the Litchfield United Methodist Church. She married Clyde Cooper, Jr. January 21, 1949, and he preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Michael) Miller of Litchfield; a son, Terry (Jacinta) Cooper of Clemsford, Essex, England; two sisters, Ruth (Lyle) Rogers of Coldwater and Helen Morris of Battle Creek; five brothers, Arthur Champion of Florida, LeRoy Champion of Wyoming, Richard (Mary) Champion of Jackson, William (Marge) Champion of Battle Creek and Lester Champion of Litchfield; four grandchildren, Michael (Kristen) Miller of Litchfield, Sandra (Chetan) Patel of Longwood, Florida, Adam Cooper and Jessica Cooper, both of England; and five great-grandchildren, Luke and Jenna Miller of Litchfield; and Emily, Sarah and Ryan Patel of Florida. Phyllis Jeanette Nelson Phyllis Jeanette Nelson, 93, of Homer, died Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at the Arbor Manor Rehabilitation and Care Center in Spring Arbor. Mrs. Nelson was born in Hamilton, Indiana, to Eugene and Mary (Miller) Till. She graduated from Hamilton High School. She married Kenneth Nelson November 23, 1939. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Nelson was a homemaker for several years, staying home and raising her family. She also worked as a salesperson for Falconer’s Clothing store in Homer and was a school bus driver for Homer Community Schools. Mrs. Nelson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Homer where she belonged to the Mary Martha Circle. She also was a life member of the Homer VFW Auxiliary. Mrs. Nelson enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and canning. Her favorite hobby was cooking and baking. She would always be willing to make a pie for any type of function. She is survived by her daughters, Sherry (Jim) Boyd of Homer and Merry (Louie) Mattia of Fremont; four grandchildren, Bryan (Nicole) Boyd and Eric Boyd all of Homer, Nicholas (Jess) Mattia of Savannah, Georgia, and Jessica (Brian) Colborn of Annapolis, Maryland. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Korrine Boyd, Alyssa Boyd, Brody Mattia, Weston Mattia, Delaney Colburn, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and a brother. Family will gather with friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Homer Saturday, December 21, from noon to 1 p.m. A memorial service celebrating her life will take place at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Homer with Reverend Timothy Marvil officiating. Marian Maxine Teal Marian M. Teal (nee Estelle), 84, passed away December 2, 2013. Beloved wife of the late Gerald and dearest mother of Dianna (John) Welke, Gary (Mary) Teal, Chris (Jackie) Teal and Jeffrey (Susan) Teal. She was the loving grandmother of John Welke, Lisa (Allen) Parker, Sara (Anthony) Cocco, Dane Teal, Ian Teal, Correy Teal, Krissi (Rocky) Putansu and Jackie Kinney. She was also a proud and loving great-grandmother of Haley and Lauren Welke, Chloe and Lydia Cocco, and Renny Putansu. She was the dear sister of Kathleen (the late Robert) Vincent and the late Raymond (Bev Swank) Estelle. And the longtime friend of Celia Shears. Marian grew up in Homer, a small southern Michigan town, with her siblings Raymond and Kathleen, where she enjoyed high school cheerleading and playing baritone horn in the band. She fondly remembered being invited as the youngest member to play at the nearby band shell in Albion. She would meet Gerald Teal while working in Jackson and soon moved to the Detroit area following Jerry’s career with RCA. Together, they would purchase their first house in Roseville where they raised Dianna, Gary, Chris and Jeff. Jerry, Marian and the family would then move to Warren where the kids finished high school. Marian’s career as a supervisor of media reproductions included National Reproductions, LTV, Chrysler Defense and retiring from General Dynamics. Marian served as president of the Chrysler Women’s Club and remained active in several clubs throughout her life. Marian would often host the local Woodmen Insurance Group meetings and enjoyed the outings and friendship with the Red Hatters. Jerry and Marian were avid campers where they shared many fond memories with their dear friends the “Haylofters” square dancing club. Waffle Farm Campgrounds would become their second home in the summer. Soon, camping trailers evolved into motor homes and traveling became a big part of their lives. Marian’s hobby interest was varied, she excelled at many things including cake and candy, making sure her cakes were present at all occasions. She shared her many talents hosting Santa’s Shop with her granddaughters’ school and knitting and making fleece blankets, often donating them to her families and church fund-raising functions. Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc., 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile), handled the arrangements. An instate funeral was held at First United Methodist Church of Warren, 5005 Chicago Road (between Ryan and Mound). Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery. Jacqueline Irene “Jackie” VanZandt Jacqueline Irene “Jackie” (Hammontree) VanZandt, 66, of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice of Battle Creek. She was born January 30, 1947, in Petoskey to Jack and Doris Irene (Ramey) Hammomtree. They moved to Homer in the late 1940s from Petoskey. Jackie was an avid bowler for over 30 years. She was a member of the Marshall Lanes Bowling Center and was also a member of the Michigan Women’s 600 Club and a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #202 of Marshall. She loved camping, gardening, reading and spending time at Weko Beach on lower Lake Michigan. Jackie loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Inez Hammontree; mother, Doris Pickford; father, Jack Hammontree; brother, Bill Hammontree; and sister, Sharon Hammontree Pundt. Jackie is survived by her children, Christine Heath (Ken Lazarus) and Lance (Brenda Hillman) VanZandt; grandsons, Kyle Gary, Colten and Caden Heath, and Lance VanZandt Jr.; granddaughters, Emily Cords and Aurora VanZandt; great-granddaughter, Sophia Main; sisters, Karen Hammontree of Bradford, Indiana and Cindy Hammontree (Greg) Benson of Wolf Creek, Montana; and several nieces and nephews. Michael R. Miller Michael R. Miller, 64, of Litchfield, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013, at home. He was born February 19, 1949, in Albion to Dale C. and Jane A. (Barnes) Miller and was a 1967 graduate of Litchfield High School. Mike was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had worked at Litchfield Community Schools, Game-Time, Inc., and was a maintenance supervisor at Michigan South Central Power Agency in Litchfield. He also was a former member of the Litchfield American Legion. He married Barbara Cooper April 26, 1969, and she survives in Litchfield. Also surviving is one daughter, Sandra (Chetan) Patel of Longwood, Florida; one son, Dr. Michael (Kristen) Miller of Litchfield; one sister, Kay (Michael) Bennett of Allen; two brothers, Douglas (Roselee) Miller and Robert Miller, both of Litchfield; and five grandchildren, Emily, Sarah and Ryan Patel of Florida and Luke and Jenna Miller of Litchfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or services.
