Clare Edward Chilson Clare Edward Chilson, 88, formerly of Litchfield, died Monday, January 3, 2005, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility in Battle Creek. Mr. Chilson was born April 25, 1916, in Jonesville, to Alexander and Emily May (Nash) Chilson. He married Leola Nerber November 14, 1948. She preceded him in death in 1989. Mr. Chilson was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he had formerly belonged to the Jonesville American Legion. He retired in 1981 from Simpson Industries, Inc. Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Jacox of Marshall; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Chilson was preceded in death by a brother and a son. Visitation is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services are Saturday, January 8, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville.
Gertrude M. Young Gertrude M. Young, 91, of Spring Arbor and formerly of Homer, died Monday, January 3, 2005, at Arbor Manor Care Center in Spring Arbor. Mrs. Young was born March 25, 1914, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Scott and Georgia Belle (Johnson) Miller. She married Harold E. Young September 1, 1940, in Highland Park, Illinois. He preceded her in death February 4, 2000. Mrs. Young lived in the Homer area since 1942. She was part owner of Homer IGA, retiring in 1969. She was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church, where she was active in all aspects of the church. She belonged to various organizations in Homer and volunteered at the school. Survivors include a daughter, Joan (Robert) Vandenburgh of Toledo, Ohio; a son, Gerald (Carol) Young of Clackamas, Oregon; two granddaughters, Angela (Tom) Height of Saline and Natalie Vandenburgh of Ann Arbor; one great-granddaughter, Elaina Height of Saline; and one great-grandson, Joe Height, of Saline. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by a son, Donald Young, in 1964; a brother, Harold Miller; and two sisters, Vema Young and Dorothy Fitzsimmons. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday, January 7, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell of Homer United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Marilyn Sue Curry Marilyn Sue Curry, 57, of Litchfield, died Monday, December 27, 2004, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Ms. Curry was born March 11, 1947, in Marshall, to William J. “Jack” and Julia (Baker) Curry. She was a 1965 graduate of Litchfield High School and also completed a course in animal grooming in Lansing. Ms. Curry co-owned Buttons and Bows Pet Salon in Litchfield and worked at Pet Paradise in Jonesville. She was a member of the Litchfield Chamber of Commerce, was an avid bowler and a member of 4-H. She was a former member of the Litchfield Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include her mother, Julia Curry of Litchfield; a sister, Carol (Norm) Lyons of Climax; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and special friends Pepper and Justin Bowers of Jonesville. She was preceded in death by her father. A memorial service was held Thursday, December 30, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Viola Lois Foltz Viola Lois Foltz, 98, of Litchfield and formerly of Homer, died Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Litchfield Nursing Centre. Mrs. Foltz was born March 24, 1906, in Lenawee County to Seymour and Lillian (Johnson) Roberts. She married Leonard S. Foltz June 25, 1924. He preceded her in death February 26, 1981. Mrs. Foltz was employed by McGraw Edison for 26 years, retiring in 1969. She enjoyed crocheting, needlecrafts and especially reading. Survivors include a daughter, Delores (Lewis) Dane of Auburn Hills; a son, Leonard S. Foltz, Jr. of Ocala, Florida; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Foltz was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Thurow; four sisters; and a brother. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 30, at J. Marjorie Dye Marjorie Dye, 89, of Homer, died Sunday, January 2, 2005, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalama-zoo. She was born June 10, 1915, in Detroit, to Andrew and Sarah (Costello) Davis. She married Howard S. Dye October 3, 1942, and he preceded her in death on June 10, 1986. Mrs. Dye graduated from Brighton Public School in 1933. She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics from Michigan State University in 1938. After receiving a teaching certificate, she taught home economics at Homer Community Schools for 19 years. Mrs. Dye was an FHA advisor during that time at Homer High School. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist of Boston and First Church of Christ Scientist of Albion, Homer Historical Society and the Homer Women’s Monday Club. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and crafts, especially primitive rug hooking and cooking. She is survived by four children, Bruce H. (Donna) Dye of Nashua, New Hampshire, Dana L. (David) Houldsworth of Kalamazoo, Dale S. (Sheila) Dye of Jackson, and John L. (Cindy) Dye of Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandsons; two granddaughters; two step granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Andrew S. Davis of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Paul W. Davis of Tucson, Arizona. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dye was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Louise and Alcestis (Betty) Elizabeth Hardy. A funeral service was held Friday, January 7, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Howard H. Huffman officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. William “Bill” A. Hammontree William “Bill” A. Hammontree, 65, of Albion, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at his residence. He was born August 3, 1939, in Mancelona, to Jack and Doris Irene (Ramey) Hammontree. He attended Homer High School. Mr. Hammontree was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 82nd Airborne. He worked in the oil field industry since 1961, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Lighthouse Foursquare Church of Battle Creek. He enjoyed fishing, skydiving, playing ball and golfing. He was instrumental in forming the Skydiving Club in Marshall. Mr. Hammontree is survived by sons, daughters, grandchildren and four sisters. He was preceded in death by a sister. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Pastor Gary Stephens officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery. Dennis E. Steele Dennis E. Steele, 53, of Parma, died Monday, January 3, 2005, at Battle Creek Health Systems. He was born May 5, 1951, in Albion, to Paul W. and Callie (Hackworth) Steele. Mr. Steele was employed by Die Cast, Aero Quip in Marshall and Ruff & Kreger Construction in Albion. He was a member of the Moose and Eagles Lodges and enjoyed muscle cars and vegetable gardening. Mr. Steele is survived by his mother, Callie Steele of Homer; two sons, Anthony (Sunshine) Steele, and Greg Steele, both of Homer; a sister, Kathy (Joe) Bronson of Arizona; a brother, William (Pam) Steele of Marshall; and three grandchildren, Scottie, Blake and Kelsie Steele. He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Pauline Hill; a brother, Paul L. Steele; and a son, Todd Steele. Funeral services were held Friday, January 7, at the J. LeRoy Melburn Grimm LeRoy Melburn Grimm, 64, of Homer, died January 7, 2005, at his home. He was born March 19, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Melburn Grimm and Margarete Leggett. Mr. Grimm married Jean Bronemann December 31, 1960, in Marquoketa, Iowa, and she survives. He was a resident of the Homer area since 2001, moving from Hillsdale. He was an over the road truck driver, last working for Sercombe Trucking in Jackson. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeff (Diane) Grimm of Stryker, Ohio, and Mark (Khris) Grimm of Homer; a daughter, Starla (Paul) Keller of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Grimm; a brother, Leo Grimm; and a sister, Mildred Felton. A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 11, at 11 a.m. at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Pastor Bob Doner officiating. Raymond Semora, Jr. Raymond Semora, Jr., 44, of Albion, died January 17, 2005, at Borgess Medical Center. He was born December 20, 1960, in Ft. Belvior, Virginia, to Raymond V. and Neoma (Bossum) Semora, Sr. Mr. Semora married Carol Smith June 10, 1989, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Semora is survived by a daughter, Erin Semora of Albion; a sister, Cathy Truax of Litchfield; and two brothers, Mike and Donald Semora, both of Homer. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are being handled by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.
G. Dale Garfield G. Dale Garfield, “Pepsi Man”, 44, of Homer, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born September 29, 1960, in Jackson, to Graydon Garfield and Frances (Kady) Garfield. Mr. Garfield was employed by Pepsi Cola Company in Coldwater for the past 15 years. He was a member of the American Motor-cycle Foundation and ABATE of Michigan Region 13. He could also be found spending time on the water in his boat and participating in different water sports. Mr. Garfield is survived by his mother, Frances Garfield of Batteese Lake; his significant other, Carmen Saldivar of Homer; a son, Justin Dale Garfield of Springport; four daughters, Ashley Day Garfield of Hillsdale, Kayley and Kyley Warfield, both of Spring Arbor and Brandy Warner of Albion; three grandchildren; two brothers, John (Tren) Garfield of Albion and Steve Garfield of Batteese Lake; three nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held Monday, January 24, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Pastor Toby Teague officiating. John Everett Sullins John Everett Sullins, 84, of Adrian, formerly of Homer, died of leukemia on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at his home. He had been ill since October. Born July 19, 1920, in Lyons, Ohio, he was the son of Jesse and Eula (Taylor) Sullins. He married Virginia M. Snyder, May 15, 1942. She died August 30, 2004. Mr. Sullins graduated from Lyons High School in 1938. In 1940, he worked for the former Stubnitz (Greene) Spring Corp., which later became Hoover Universal. With the start of World War II, he joined the Army, and proudly served from August 1942, to September 1946, being honorably discharged as 1st lieutenant. Upon returning to Adrian, he continued working at Hoover Universal as supervisor of production control and customer service until retiring in 1982 when the plant closed in Adrian. He worked another four years as a consultant to the Indiana plant, and retired a second time in 1986. He and his wife then moved to Homer where he became the village treasurer. When his wife became ill, he moved closer to his children, living in Petersburg for four years, and returning to Adrian in 2003. He was a past member of the United Brethren Church. He served as financial secretary, Sunday school superintendent, and a member of the choir. He was a current member of the Fellowship Bible Church in Adrian. When his children attended Madison schools, he was a school board member and president of the PTA. His grandson, Jeffrey Webster, is now head basketball coach at Madison. Mr. Sullins enjoyed family gatherings. He was an avid Detroit Piston and Lions fan. Surviving are his sister, Shirley (Bill) Newton of North Wales, Pennsylvania; a son, Richard (Joan) Sullins of Adrian; two daughters, Diana Webster-Wheeler of Adrian, and Carol (Jim) Bruce of Petersburg; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three half sisters, five half brothers, an uncle, Wendell Sullins, and a grandson, Michael Sullins. Funeral services were held Friday, January 28, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian with Dr. Edmund C. Burkey officiating. Burial was in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park in Adrian with Full Graveside Military Services conducted by the VFW Annis-Fint Post #1584. Edith M. Jinkerson Edith M. Jinkerson, age 92, of Homer, died Sunday, January 30, 2005, at Marshall Manor. Mrs. Jinkerson was born March 11, 1912, in Homer Township, to Edward H. and Hazel E. (Shilling) Chamberlain. She was a life resident of the Homer and Litchfield area, and worked as a nurse aide for the Coldwater State Home for 20 years. She was a member of the Homer Senior Citizens, and attended the United Methodist Church in Homer. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and flowers. Mrs. Jinkerson is survived by a son, Harry Jinkerson, of West Branson, Missouri; a stepdaughter, Veda (Richard) Barstow of Sedona, Arizona; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cleo and Anna May. She was preceded in death by a son, Delbert Haskin; two brothers, Oliver and Paul Chamber-lain; and a sister, Ruth Burk. Annie Izzard Annie Izzard, 70, of Albion, formerly of Litchfield, died Sunday, January 30, 2005, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Mrs. Izzard was born February 10, 1934, in Virgie, Kentucky, to Lonza and Maxie (Casebolt) Burke. She married John Izzard June 11, 1974. He preceded her in death in 1986. Mrs. Izzard came to Michigan in 1952. She was the owner and operator of Ginko Tree Care Home in Litchfield since 1991. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography. Survivors include a sister, Fontella Mann of Homer; five brothers, Gary Newsome of Homer, Grover (Betty) Burke of Coldwater, Lonza Burke, Jr. of Albion, Garner Burke of Quincy, and Craig Mullins of Litchfield; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Izzard was preceded in the death by her parents; four brothers, Orville, Dempsey, Nolan and Jerrel; and a sister, Patsy Bryant. Linda Joan Bennett Linda Joan Bennett, 57, of Wellington, Florida, and formerly of Litchfield, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at Palms West Hospital in Wellington. Ms. Bennett was born February 5, 1947, in Albion, to Charles and Geraldine (Turrell) Bennett. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1965. She lived the past 40 years in Florida, where she was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach. She enjoyed golfing, animals and traveling. In addition to her parents in Litchfield, she is survived by a sister, Dawn (Jerry) Avery of Coldwater; two brothers, Kenneth (Judith) Bennett of Battle Creek and Bradley (Deborah) Bennett of Litchfield; and a best friend, Sue Fitch of Wellington. Funeral services were held Friday, February 4, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. John Thompson officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Ernest L. Mansfield Ernest L. Mansfield, 85, of Homer, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Litchfield Nursing Centre. He was born August 19, 1919, in Homer, to Ernest and Jessie (Caldwell) Mansfield. He married Bethel “Maxine” Britton February 21, 1942. She preceded him in death October 13, 2004. Mr. Mansfield served his country in the U. S. Army during WWII. He farmed in Homer most of his life, was a truck driver for Michigan Milk Producers, and also worked at Eaton’s in Marshall. Mr. Mansfield was a member of Farm Bureau, Jayco Campers Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching football. He is survived by a daughter, Carol (Robert) Yinger of Homer; a son, Gary (Jean) Mansfield of Marshall; a sister, Dorothy Worthington of Bay City; a half sister, Evelyn Armstrong of Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Craig Mansfield. Mary J. Shepherd Mary J. Shepherd, 81, of Homer, died Sunday, February 6, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born February 28, 1923, In Floyd County, Kentucky, to Dan Reffitt and Martha (Marcillit) Reffitt. She married Joseph Shepherd on September 4, 1939, in Kentucky, and he preceded her in death in May 1971. Mrs. Shepherd was a resident of the Homer and Albion area since 1963. She was a homemaker, but was formerly employed at Marshall Brass and Randall’s of Tekonsha. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church of Homer. She enjoyed baking cookies, singing in the church choir and Gospel music. Mrs. Shepherd is survived by three sons, Ezra Shepherd of Litchfield, Freddie Shepherd of Mendon, and Earl Shepherd of Tekonsha; six daughters, Isola Prater of Homer, Emma Mae Watkins of Burlington, Coleen March of Ceresco, Tresia Vest of Ceresco, and Vicki Sneed and Sonja Faye, both of Union City; 31 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Josephine Yates of Warsaw, Indiana; and four brothers, Amos, Floyd Gene, Jimmy and Joe Wheeler Reffitt, all of Warsaw. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Estill Shepherd and Ervin Shepherd; a daughter, Bonnie Lou Shepherd; a brother, Henry Reffitt; and five sisters, Sally Ann, Julie Belle, Edna Mae, Audiellen and Ollie. Maurice F. Benham Maurice F. Benham, 81, of Homer, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital. He was born July 11, 1923, in Albion Township, to Frank and Helen (Howe) Benham. He married Helen McNiel March 9, 1947, and she survives. Mr. Benham was a carpenter for Rossman Construction Co. and Al Dawson Construction, both of Litchfield. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Homer, Masonic Lodge #29, O.E.S., Progressive Farmers Association, Progressive Farmers Sportsman Association, Calhoun County Farm Bureau, and founding board member of the B. E. Henry Building in Marshall. He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing and especially the cabin in Grayling. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jean (Larry) Sherman of Fremont, and Maureen (Doug) Reddington of Needham, Massachusetts; four sons, Gerald Benham of Surprise, Arizona, Chuck (Vikki) Benham of Spring Arbor, David (Ramona) Benham of Marshall, and Steve (Carrie) Benham of Grass Lake; two sisters, Louise Bartell of Midland and Ruth Pulsipher of Battle Creek; a brother, George Benham of Mesa, Arizona; and 11 grandchildren. Ella Jean Kline Ella Jean Kline, 72, of Homer, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Kline was born Sept-ember 12, 1932, in Piggolt, Arkansas, to Marvin and Modena (Morgan) Trout. She married Jack Kline September 19, 1948. He preceded her in death July 8, 1988. Mrs. Kline was a homemaker, a member of Cook’s Prairie Church, and she enjoyed baking and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters, Pam (James) Ballinger of Litchfield, Karen Cousino of Homer, and Deserrie Warsop of South Carolina; a son, Brian (Barbra) Kline of Homer; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kline was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Funeral services were held Monday, February 13, at the J. James Richard Walterhouse, Sr. James Richard Walterhouse, Sr., 69, of Homer, died Friday, February 11, 2005, at home. He was born November 8, 1935, in Battle Creek, to Archie and Jeannette (Riley) Walter-house and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. He married Lavonna Ratliff August 12, 1960, and she preceded him in death in 2002. Mr. Walterhouse served in the U.S. Army and the Albion National Guard, retiring after 20 years of service. He had also been employed at Albion Industries and Corning Glass. An avid exercise enthusiast, he enjoyed boxing (in the Army), as well as bowling and jogging. He belonged to Grace Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by three daughters, Ollie Ackley of Battle Creek, Diana Mitchell of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and Kari Walterhouse of Homer; two sons, J.R. Walter-house and J.C. Walterhouse, both of Homer; a sister, Rosemarie Lawhead of Battle Creek; a brother, Will Walterhouse of Battle Creek; two grandsons, Michael Corey Mitchell and Christopher Lons; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson; and nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the J. George Orville Daniels George Orville Daniels, 91, of Litchfield, died Friday, February 11, 2005, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born July 23, 1913, in Litchfield, to Fred and Nina (Dickens) Daniels, and was a graduate of Litchfield High School. He married Edith Culbert April 11, 1940, and she survives. Mr. Daniels retired from Harvard Industries in Albion, and enjoyed leisure time fishing and attending auctions. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joyce (Jerry) Bender of Litchfield and Sandra (Daniel) Williams of Homer; a son, Stuart Daniels of Litchfield; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Raymond, Donald and David and an infant son, Norman. Graveside services were held Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Memorial contributions to Hospice of Hillsdale County would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements were handled by George White Funeral Home, Litchfield.
Sue Ann Muer Sue Ann Muer, 67, of Wheat-on, Illinois, died Friday, February 11, 2005, at the University of Chicago Hospital. Mrs. Muer was born June 11, 1937, in Albion. She retired in 1998 after 19 years as a third grade teacher in Wheaton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. She enjoyed rug hooking, bowling and crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Thomas A. Muer of Wheaton; three daughters, Sandra Muer of Wheaton, Sharon (Joel) Shattuck of Boca Raton, Florida, and Susan (Todd) Yendro of Wheaton; three grandchildren, Jenna, Sydne and Jacob; a sister, Sally (Terry) Anderson of Homer; and a brother, John (Marsha) Andrews of Winneconne, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 18, at the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn, with the Revs. Dr. Thomas Potenza, Claude King and Robert Lesher officiating. Donald A. Tech Donald A. Tech, 69, of Litchfield, died Sunday, February 13, 2005, at the VA Hospital of Battle Creek. He was born October 22, 1935, in Albion, to Richard Tech and Grace (Logan) Tech. Mr. Tech married Gladys “Pauline” Slagle on January 23, 1956, in Homer. She preceded him in death November 6, 2004. Mr. Tech was a resident of the Jackson and Hillsdale county area all his life. He was self-employed as a farmer. He was an Army veteran. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Colon of Willisburg, Kentucky, and Ada (Wayne) Miller of Allen; and a brother Richard L. (Jutta) Tech of Abilene, Kansas. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there are no services scheduled at this time. Arrangements were entrusted to the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.
Sandra “Sandy” Rose Walker Sandra “Sandy” Rose Walker, 61, of Allendale, formerly of Coldwater, died February 14, 2005, at Allendale Nursing Home of Allendale. Mrs. Walker was born June 18, 1943, in Jackson, to Wayne Rose and Amber (Nash) Rose. She married Earl “Pete” Walker Jr. on September 5, 1959, in Jackson. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1993. She was a perfect mother to her children and a loving and caring grandmother. She loved spending time at the lake boating and enjoying a good cookout. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy (Tim) Calderone of Grand Rapids; three sons, Pete Walker of Albion, Wade (Misty) Walker of Coldwater, and Kevin (Jonelle) Walker of Quincy; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ron (Erma) Rose of Jackson and Wayne “Buster” Rose of Jack-son; a sister, Joanne Sanders of Jack-son; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by an infant son, Skip Walker, and her parents. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 17, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Pastor Scott Eberle officiating. Burial followed at Albion Memory Gardens. Bruce L. Purucker Bruce L. Purucker, 56, of Homer, died February 19, 2005, at his home. He was born November 1, 1948, in Albion, to Albert J. and Margaret (King) Purucker. He graduated from Homer High School in 1966. Mr. Purucker was a supervisor and process technician for Manchester Plastic in Homer, L.O.F. in Spring Arbor, Mark One in Jonesville and Triple “S” Plastics in Battle Creek. In his early years he also worked for McGraw Edison. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, mushroom hunting in Northern Michigan and watching wildlife. He was a NASCAR and 49er’s fan. Mr. Purucker is survived by three daughters, Dawn (Rob) Green of Homer, Laurie (Randy) Nevins of Concord, and Lynette (Gavin) Carr of Homer; two brothers, Randy (Shelly) Purucker of Concord, and Brent (Sally) Purucker of Arizona; a special nephew, Christopher Purucker of Homer; eight grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 26, at 11 a.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, in Albion, with the Rev. Daniel Anthony Cook Daniel Anthony Cook, 62, of Marshall, died unexpectedly Saturday, February 26, 2005. He was born January 14, 1943, in Albion, to Kenneth and Mary (Riske) Cook. Mr. Cook was a lifelong resident of this area and a graduate of Marshall High School. He had been employed by Kellogg’s in Battle Creek for 30 years, retiring in 1994. He then went to work at Marshall Lanes. Marriages to Marian Lance, Sandy Carpenter (Flynn) and Irene Hartman (Carter) ended in divorce. Mr. Cook was a member of the Kellogg’s 25-year club and Marshall Moose Lodge. He had a zest for life and loved being with his family and preparing special meals for them. He enjoyed bowling and playing golf. He was a member of the Tuesday Moose Golf League and the American Bowling Club. He was an avid Detroit Lions football fan. Mr. Cook is survived by three children, Amy (Charles) Olmstead of Marshall, Michael (Toni) Cook of Pennfield and Michelle Cook of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Chelsea Olmstead, Morgan Olmstead, Sydnic Cook, Jeremy Cook and Lauren VanVleet; siblings, Donald (Jane) Cook of Marshall, David (Ginny) Cook of Battle Creek, Dennis (Eileen) Cook of Lander, Wyoming, Duane (Margit) Cook of San Antonio, Texas, Doreen (Robert) Misener of Marshall and Douglas (Susan) Cook of Tekonsha. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Lance Carter. Visitation was Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Marshall, with the family receiving friends from 5-8 p.m. Services celebrating his life will be held today (Wednesday) at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Claude May, Jr. Claude May, Jr., 51, of Albion, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Mr. May was born January 20, 1954, in Williamson, West Virginia, to Claude and Sylvia (Charles) May, Sr. He married Janice Branham September 1, 1990. She survives. Mr. May was a nurse’s aid for Albion Manor and Parkview Manor in Kentucky. He enjoyed reading, western movies and was a Detroit Tiger fan. He also enjoyed music, playing in a band as a drummer. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Sarah Reynolds of Homer, Ellabrook May of Parma, and Jennifer Reynolds of Homer; three sons, Frederick May of Jackson, Claude May III of Par-ma, and Samuel May of Homer; four sisters, Karen May of Albion, Marian Miller of Jackson, and Sharon Woods and Elva Blair, both of Albion; two brothers, Daniel May of Albion and John May of Adrian; special nieces Stacy May and Jorja Woods; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gary. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, at the J. Valerie Kay Sharlow Valerie Kay Sharlow, 42, of Dayton, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at her home in Dayton. She was born January 24, 1963, in Coldwater, to Hebert and Jennie (Butcher) Holbrook. Mrs. Sharlow lived in Dayton for the last 14 years. She attended Litchfield Schools. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, garage sales, flower gardening and horses. She is survived by her mother, Jennie Holbrook of Homer; two daughters, Jenisa Holbrook and Cory Gates, both of Dayton; three sons, Josh Sharlow of Canton, and Codey Holbrook and Tyler Gates, both of Dayton; and three brothers, Ron (Dorothy) Holbrook, Carl Holbrook, and Doug (Patty) Holbrook, all of Homer. Mrs. Sharlow was preceded in death by her father, Hebert Holbrook. A funeral service was held Monday, March 21, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Emma F. Harper Emma F. Harper, 88, of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at her home. She was born December 26, 1916, in Clarendon Township, to Ralph and Minnie (Brayton) Maurer. Mrs. Harper was a pharmacy assistant and worked at the V. A. Hospital and Community Hospital in Battle Creek. She was also employed at Gale Manufacturing and enjoyed reading, puzzles and crocheting. Mrs. Harper is survived by three daughters, Beverly Klinkel and Sandra Camburn, both of Homer, and Barbara Collins of Battle Creek; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and (3) sisters. There will be no service or visitation. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. Esther E. Rosenau Esther E. Rosenau, 83, formerly of Albion, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Masonic Pathways in Alma. Mrs. Rosenau was born September 25, 1921, in Albion, to Edwin Clarence and Madge Elizabeth (Armstrong) Rausch. She married William J. Rosenau June 12, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Rosenau worked as a clerk at Parks Drug Store in Albion for approximately 30 years. She attended Homer United Methodist Church and was a member of Stella Chapter 140 of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Rosenau moved to Houghton Lake in 1988. She will be remembered for her talent of working with her hands - making ceramics, and doing cross-stitch and quilt sewing. She enjoyed reading and collecting antiques. Survivors include two sons, Kent (Betsy) Rosenau of Cadillac and Keith (Janice) Rosenau of Houghton Lake; a brother, Gilbert (Clara) Rausch of Marshall; a brother-in-law, Gayle (Phylis) Rosenau of Marshall; three grandchildren, Kristen and Mike Nevins of Homer, Kevin and Kim Rosenau of Zeeland, and Brian Rosenau of Culver, Indiana; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rosenau was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Rausch; and four brothers, Richard, Kenneth, Phlauris and Ray Rausch. Margaret “Betty” Petredean Margaret “Betty” Petredean, 81, of Homer, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at her home. Margaret Elizabeth Giles was born in Dearborn November 3, 1923, to Eva and Norman Giles. She attended Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti and graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts and Science and a music education degree. She married George Petredean June 24, 1944, and he survives. The couple settled in Homer in 1946, where they raised their four children. Mrs. Petredean was the corporate secretary for Calhoun Foundry Company Inc. until 2001. She was an active volunteer in the community. She was the organist and choir director at the Homer United Methodist Church for many years, a member of the Homer Woman’s Monday Club, Cub Scout den mother and a PTA member. She helped start the Caring and Sharing program, and was a founding member of the Homer Arts Advisory Committee. Mrs. Petredean was an avid reader and lover of music and the arts. She and her husband were instrumental in the creation of the new Homer Public Library building. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Petredean is survived by three sons, George J. (Ann Rosenbaum) Petredean, Norman J. (Liu Yu) Petredean and Thomas J. (Mary Jo) Petredean; a daughter, Carol E. (Ronald) Petredean-Di Salvio; 13 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin Giles. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice or the Homer Area Community Foundation. A scholarship for graduates pursuing careers in music and art will be established in Mrs. Petredean’s memory. Maxine C. Campo Maxine C. Campo, 77, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, Washington. Mrs. Campo was born September 22, 1927, in Homer, to Lester and Turena (Riker) King. She married Charles Fauver in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1951. She married Norman F. Campo June 27, 1953. He survives. Mrs. Campo graduated from Homer High School in 1944. She moved to Wyoming in 1965 and Bremerton in 1966. Mrs. Campo was a life member of Stella Chapter 140 OES, having served as Worthy Matron in 1959-60. She was noted for her baking, cooking and sewing abilities, and enjoyed traveling. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Campo is survived by a son, Charles E. Fauver; two daughters, Kathy A. Uzonyi and Jan D. Heitzman; three grandchildren, Shoshana Mangiola, Gabe Fauver and Nicholas Uzonyi; two great-granddaughters; a brother, Ken (Eva) King of Marshall; a sister, Dorothy Reed of Homer; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Campo was preceded in death by a brother, Lester King, Jr.; and a grandson, Joshua Neal Uzonyi. At Mrs. Campo’s request, no service was held. Ray C. Brail Ray C. Brail, 93, of Pulaski, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at home under the loving care of his family. Mr. Brail was a graduate of Concord High School and University of California-Davis where he also served as instructor-foreman of the Orchards. He was a lifelong farmer in Pulaski and the first in the county to use contour farming. He was formerly the Pulaski Township Treasurer and on the Township Board of Review. Mr. Brail served in the National Guard from 1935-1937. He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Hepler of Hanover and Linda Brail of Pulaski; a son, Glenn (Shirley) Brail of Marshall; grandchildren, Robert (Beth Flower) Brail and Donald (Cheryl Dogan) Hartung; great-grandchildren, Timothy (Jenny Vest) Brail and Quinton Brail. Mr. Brail was preceded in death by his wife Agnes L. Brail and daughter Marilyn V. Hartung. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at S. D. Lauer Funeral Home in Concord, with the Rev. Hazel Irene Koons Pratt Hazel Irene Koons Pratt, 92, of Homer Township, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. She was born April 25, 1913, in Calhoun County, to George and Lena (Buskey) Rowley. Mrs. Pratt had been a cook at the Homer Community Schools and belonged to the Litchfield First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Wesley Koons and Rev. Andrew Pratt. Mrs. Pratt is survived by two sons, Rev. David (Norma) Koons of Shelby, Mississippi, and Teddy (Laura) Koons of Homer; a foster son, George Whitehead of Florida; a sister, Ruth Yaudes of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy J. Miller; two sons, Wesley and Weston Koons; a foster son, John Whitehead; a sister, Frances Rowley; and a brother, Meryl Rowley. Duane Gary Richardson Duane Gary Richardson, 69, of Homer, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at home. He was born November 30, 1935, in Springport, and raised by Frank Pettibone and Emily (Hilliard). Mr. Richardson married Carolyn Hickerson June 6, 1958, and she preceded him in death February 14, 1976. Mr. Richardson graduated from Olivet College in 1961 and began teaching at the age of 21. He retired at age 54. He played football for Olivet College and was a fraternity brother for Kappa Sigma Phi. He touched many lives as Tekonsha School football coach and principal. He was a well-liked person and lived life to the fullest. He was Irish and had close ties to Ireland. He enjoyed harness racing and his coffee at the PS Food Mart. It seemed everyone he ran into was a student of “Mr. Richards”. His deepest and dearest love was for his family. Mr. Richardson is survived by a daughter, Deborah Richardson of Homer; a son, Kevin (Amy) Richardson of Homer; special aunts, Thelma (George) Wayward of Marshall, Mildred Schaberg of Homer and Evelyn (Harry) Arquette of Albion; a stepbrother, Harry Pettibone of Indiana; a brother-in-law, Jim Hickerson of Homer; and grandchildren, Gary and Grant Richardson. Margaret Belle Cox Margaret Belle Cox, 94, of Albion, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at Tendercare of Albion. She was born August 31, 1910, in Clarendon Township, to Peter and Floy (Pritchard) Blashfield. She married Clair Cox March 14, 1932, and he preceded her in death in 1970. Mrs. Cox was employed at Union Steel Products Co. and Albion Community Hospital for 19 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and past president of the Eagles, Albion Post. She enjoyed sewing and flowers. She is survived by a nephew, Paul (Mary) Blashfield of Homer; a great niece; and three great nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers. Cherie Combs Cherie Combs, 57, of Hanover, died Monday evening, April 4, 2005, at home. Surviving are her husband, Doug; parents, Mack (Donna) Johnson of Florida and Kate Brower of California; two sisters, Debbie Johnson of California and Julie Laur of Colorado; and a brother, Dan Johnson of California. Mrs. Combs was preceded in death by her son Michael in January 2005. Mrs. Combs was an employee of Hayes-Lemmerz in Homer. She operated a horse breeding operation and was a member of numerous horse organizations around the state. Her love of horses and all animals led her to win several world championship titles in English Pleasure, Pleasure and Halter classes. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. She married Wendell Heath December 22, 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Heath belonged to the United Methodist Church of Jonesville. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy (John) Miller of Hanover, Ruth (Leon) Mayhew of Prescott, Arizona, and Bette (Kenneth) Crapo of Litchfield; three sisters, Dorothy (Richard) Mills and Jean Ebaugh, both of Hillsdale, and Marilyn (Mike) Hohner of Detroit; two stepbrothers, Clark (Rita) Holtsberry of China, and Ronald (Emily) Holtsberry of Detroit; 24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chatterson was born August 29, 1955, in Tacoma, Washington, to Willis and Kathleen (Shilling) Skelly. She attended Eaton Rapids Community Schools and was employed at Wal-Mart in Bradenton. She had also worked as an E.M.T. in Litchfield. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chatterson is survived by her husband, Daniel Chatterson of Bradenton; two daughters, Krissa (Mat) Dylard and Riki Chatterson; two stepdaughters, Jill Brown and Sheila Bronson; two sons, Stanley Glenn Lambert, Jr. and Robert Lambert; a stepson, Danny Chatterson, Jr.; four sisters, Yvonne Smith, Deborah Seales, Carol Graham and Kathy Skelly; two brothers, Douglas Skelly and Jim Skelly; and 14 grandchildren. Douglas Max Thomas Douglas Max Thomas, 58, of Clarendon Township, Tekonsha, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall. He was born March 10, 1947, in Quincy, to Max and Harriet (Leighner) Thomas and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1966. He married Sharon Kay Musolf October 31, 1968, and she survives. Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Air Force and worked at Union Steel Co. for 29 years. He had also been employed at Tenneco Corporation from 1995-2005. He was an active member of the Litchfield I.O.O.F., serving as Secretary, Noble Grand, Chaplain and Warden. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, woodworking and spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Mr. Thomas is survived by two daughters, Kim (Dan) Weaver of Marshall, and Michelle (Andrew) Deters of Lexington, Kentucky; three brothers, Harry (Sandra) Thomas and Dewayne Thomas, both of Litchfield, and Arthur (Kathy) Thomas of Homer; and four grandchildren. Rita Irene Bigelow Rita Irene Bigelow, 82, lifelong Litchfield resident, died April 7, 2005, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born August 12, 1922, to Charles and Maggie Pitcher. She attended Sand Creek Corner School. She married Nevin Gorden Bigelow May 8, 1939, and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Bigelow operated Rita’s foster care home in Homer for 20 years. She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Edward) Guajardo of Litchfield; four grandchildren, Harry (Patty) Johnson, Ed Guajardo Jr., William Guajardo and Rita Guajardo; eight great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and five step great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosella (Orval) Fouty Jr.; and a grandson, Orval (Tinker) Fouty III. There were no services held for Mrs. Bigelow. Jessica Driscoll Longhurst Jessica “Jessie” Driscoll Longhurst, 20, of Albion, was killed in an automobile accident in Australia April 10, 2005. She was born July 24, 1984, in Albion, to Dr. Jim and Lynn Longhurst. Ms. Longhurst was a junior at Albion College and was studying abroad in Australia at the time of her death. She was a gifted student and athlete. She loved being challenged in school and respected those teachers and professors who held high expectations for her and who respected and drew out the strengths of the students they served. She felt the same way about her coaches, especially Mary Egnatuk, who brought out and cultivated her athletic, teamwork and leadership skills. Ms. Longhurst was gifted with a strong body, persistence and determination, and a healthy competitive spirit. She was a confident and articulate public speaker, and felt very comfortable with both prepared and spontaneous presentations. When she entered a room, her presence seemed to command attention and drew people toward her. She gave her family, friends and communities the gift of compassion. She knew that merely feeling these things by oneself is insufficient, and that she must make visible to others the compassion she felt for them. Ms. Longhurst had a love and dedication to the mentoring of young people. She is survived by her parents; three sisters, Jamie Lynn, Jordan Elizabeth and Abby Jane Longhurst; maternal grandparents Fred and Alice Driscoll; paternal grandparents Jim and Evelyn Gay; and numerous aunts and uncles. Ms. Longhurst was preceded in death by an aunt, Jane Ellen Longhurst; and an uncle, Arthur William Longhurst. A memorial service was held April 15 at Goodrich Chapel in Albion. A program called “Jessie’s Gift Mentoring Program,” a collaboration of Albion College and the Albion Public Schools, has been established in her memory. Marilyn Ruth Horn Marilyn Ruth Horn, 75, of Litchfield, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at Botsford General Hospital, Farmington. She was born November 13, 1929, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Leon and Susan (Cutting) Covey. Mrs. Horn had been employed at the former Don’s Supermarket, Litchfield, and Coldwater Service Division of Simpson Industries. She married Daniel Gabbard and he preceded her in death. She married Donald E. Horn in 1977 and he survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Karen Fraki, Maggie (Jim) Ruff, Sandra (Denny) Strawser, Jan (Tom) Cushman, and Diane (Maynard Clark); two sons, Steve and Robert Gabbard; seven stepsons, Donald E. (Judy) Horn II, Scott (Gina) Horn, Louis (Sarah) Horn, Dale Horn, Keith Horn, Bruce (Tracey) Horn, and Gale Horn; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruea Williams and Margaret Kucharek. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Davey Gabbard; a brother, John Covey; and a grandson. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Mabel Sylvia Taylor Mabel Sylvia Taylor, 93, of Sebring, Florida, died Monday, February 28, 2005, in Sebring. She was born March 29, 1911, in Freeport, Ohio, to Harvey and Iva B. (Green) Blackwell. She had been a resident of Sebring since 1986, coming from Albion. Mrs. Taylor was an administrator of a manufacturing company. She is survived by her husband, Bert Taylor, of Sebring; sons, Ernest L. Kirby of Cottonwood, Arizona; Patrick L. Kirby of Winter Haven, Florida; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mary E. Petersen Mary E. Petersen, 96, of Clarendon Township, Tekonsha, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Colonial House, Marshall. She was born November 24, 1908, in Climax Township, to John and Adah (Green) Russell. She married Harvey C. Petersen October 4, 1929, and he preceded her in death in 2002. Mrs. Peterson worked as a stenographer in her early years. She was a 50-year member of the Southeastern Clarendon Extension Club and also belonged to the Farm Bureau. Her hobbies included crocheting, embroidery and gardening. She is survived by two sons, Dale (the late Marylee) Petersen and Robert (Darlene) Petersen, both of Tekonsha; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Terberg, and a brother, Clifford Russell. Funeral services were held Monday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. James Snyder officiating. Interment followed in West Clarendon Cemetery. Doris J. Folk Doris J. Folk, 82, of Homer, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living Center. Mrs. Folk was born October 30, 1922, in Homer Township to Thurman B. and Goldie June (Snyder) Shaffer. She married Robert D. Folk July 4, 1943, in Decatur. He preceded her in death October 25, 1999, Mrs. Folk graduated from Homer High School in 1940 and from Reggs Beauty School in 1941. She was employed as a hairdresser in her early years and also was a library aide for Homer Community Schools. She was a lifelong member and former deacon of First Presbyterian Church in Homer. She participated in many local activities and enjoyed collecting teddy bears. Her time spent with her grandchildren was most important. Survivors include a daughter, Susan J. (Michael J.) Linton of Central Lake; a son, Richard D. (Jan) Folk of Homer; five grandchildren, Brett Linton, James (Renee) Linton, Keri (Brad) Jerome, and Thyra and Deanne Folk; and a brother, Gerald (Rosemary) Shaffer of Homer. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Folk was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Andrews. Visitation is Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Marguerite B. Taylor Marguerite B. Taylor, 86, of Homer, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born December 16, 1918, in Linden, to Dale and Ethel (Swartz) Everett. She married Maurice Lester Taylor September 30, 1935, and he preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Taylor was a waitress at Cascarelli’s in Homer for several years and she was also employed by Calhoun Industries and retired from Marshall Progressive Dynamics in 1982 after 10 years of service. She attended Litchfield First Baptist Church and enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and loved nature, wildlife and her grandchildren. She is survived by four daughters, Sue Pelfry and Kathleen Butters, both of Homer, Mary (Walter) Kollmorgen of Sherwood, and Beth (Skip) Lawrence of Tekonsha; a son, David (Sue) Taylor of Homer; three sisters, Zaida Coxon of Windmere, Florida, Mary Ann Peterson of Ocala, Florida, and LaVaye Harris of Richland, Washington; a brother, LaVern Everett of Davidson; 20 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and five brothers. A memorial service will be held today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. at J. Menifee Allen Menifee Allen, 83, of Homer, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Litchfield Nursing Centre. He was born April 8, 1922, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to John and Cellamae (Saylers) Allen. He married Lou Berdia Allen March 21, 1947, and she preceded him in death May 19, 2000. Mr. Allen worked for Brooks Foundry most of his life and enjoyed farming, cards, gospel music, dining out and walking. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church of Homer, where he served as deacon. He is survived by four daughters, Verna (Lonny) Basham of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Lori (Ed) Perkins of Tyler, Texas, Polly (Ralph) Summa of Nashville, Tennessee, and Daisy (Tom) Wright of Vicksburg; six sons, John (Kathy) Allen of Muskegon, Sam (Brenda) Allen of Homer, Kindle (Karen) Allen of Albion, Lacy (LaDonna) Allen of Homer, Jack Allen of Sherwood, and Ed (Lisa) Allen of Marshall; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Kay Allen, and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Allen. Funeral services were held Monday, May 16, 2005, at the J. (Delia) Louise Williams (Delia) Louise Williams, 99, of Homer died Friday, May 20, 2005, in Spring Arbor. Mrs. Williams was born February 27, 1906, in Homer Township to Arthur Eslow Leach and (Clara) May Chamberlain Leach. She attended Agnew School and Homer High School. After the death of her mother, she lived with Bessie Blair, a teacher at the high school. She graduated in 1924. Mrs. Williams attended Normal College in Ypsilanti, where she received her teaching certification. She married Dale Edwin Williams November 25, 1925. He preceded her in death October 22, 1975, a month before their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple lived in Detroit until 1931. They moved to Belleville in 1931 and moved to a farm near Concord (now Whiffletree Hill Golf Course) in 1943. They eventually sold the farm and bought a place just inside the Calhoun County line. Mrs. Williams taught for many years, including at the Grub Oak country school. Mrs. Williams was a member of Stella Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Farm Bureau, Homer United Methodist Church, Hannah Tracy Grant Chapter of the DAR, and the Homer Historical Society, of which she was an organizing member. She was interested in conservation and politics, as well as many, many other areas. Survivors include two daughters, Monica Ellen (Clayton) Hopp and Ruelle Elizabeth (Kenneth) Dart; two sons, Dale Leach (Christel) Williams and Kent Riblet (Gina) Williams; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by a brother Herbert Eslow Leach, and a grandson, Clayton A. Hopp, Jr. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 25, from 3-8 p.m. at the Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Homer United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Joan Gayle Vandenburgh Joan Gayle Vandenburgh, 62, of Toledo, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in Perrysburg, Ohio. She was born August 2, 1942, in Highland Park, Illinois, to Harold E. and Gertrude M. (Miller) Young. She married Robert D. Vandenburgh June 28, 1964, and he survives. Mrs. Vandenburgh attended Michigan State University and graduated from Western Michigan University. She went on to become a teacher in the Jackson and Portland, Oregon, areas where she taught home economics and science. She was a volunteer in many school activities at all levels, a member of the Child Study Club in Jackson and was a 4-H Club leader. She enjoyed interior designing, gardening, sewing and landscaping. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Natalie Lynn Vandenburgh of Ypsilanti and Angela Gayle (Thomas) Height of Saline; a brother, Gerald (Carol) Young of Portland, Oregon; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Donald Young. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 29, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Don Lee officiating. Florence M. Adams Florence M. Adams, 71, of Homer, died Monday, May 30, 2005, at Laurels of Coldwater, after a difficult battle with cancer. Ms. Adams spent her life caring for the elderly and the sick. She had a special place in her heart for Navin and dearly loved all her grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, Steven (Connie) Katz of Jackson, and Douglas (Patti) Katz of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Jesse, Navin, Anna, Krista and Larryelle; nieces and nephews, Edward, Erwin, Ellen, Cindy; and special niece, Cheryl. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary Stanton; a son, Lawrence; and two brothers, John and Gordon. Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place with a memorial to be held at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to Southern Care Hospice of Jackson and The Arthritis Foundation. Mark Mitchell of Homer United Methodist Church officiating. Mrs. Muer died February 11, 2005. She was a former Homer resident.
Dr. Ronald C. Hamaker Ronald C. Hamaker, M.D., 64, of Zionsville, Indiana, died Monday, May 30, 2005. He was born August 23, 1940, in Marshall, to Kermit J. and Alma (Weidendorf) Hamaker. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and dedicated physician. Dr. Hamaker grew up on a 600 acre farm, raising beef cattle and sheep. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1958, and married Marjorie Miller in 1962. She survives. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1965, where he received the School’s Empathy Award. Wayne State University also named him a Most Distinguished Alumnus in 1990. He continued his medical education as an intern and general surgery resident at Butter-worth Hospital in Grand Rapids, and then attended residency in Otolaryngology at Wayne State University from 1967 to 1970. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972, and received a Distinguished Service Award at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Thereafter he completed a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology with John Conley in New York, New York. After completing his fellowship, he took a full professorship at the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology, a position he held until 1979. He also served as Vice Chairman of the department starting in 1973. In 1979 he left to start his own private practice (Head and Neck Surgery Associates) in Otolaryngology. Dr. Hamaker established the Midwest Center for Cosmetic Surgery, the Head and Neck Rehabilitation Institute, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Surgery Center of Indianapolis and the Regional PET Scanner of Indianapolis. In his 30 years of medical practice he pioneered the use of intra-operative radiation therapy for treatment of head and neck cancer, primary voice restoration, and myotomy for laryngectomies, carotid interpositioning, use of the Blom-Singer voice prosthesis at the time of laryngectomy and held a patent for a mechanical replacement heart valve designed while he was in residency. He was an honorary chairman of the HealthNet Foundation. He was a member of the Indianapolis Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Society, American Association of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, The Triologic Society and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Murat Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the Royal Order of Jesters and York Lodge #410 of Grand Rapids. In addition to his wife, Dr. Hamaker is survived by a brother, Eugene D. (Alice) Hamaker of Marshall; daughters, Ronda (Hamaker) Jalaie; a son, Andrew D. Hamaker; three granddaughters, Alicia N. Hamaker, Claire A. Williams, and Rebecca A. Williams; and two grandsons Alec S. Hamaker and Peter K. Jalaie. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, Indiana. A memorial reception followed at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Indianapolis. Arrangements were handled by Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Zionsville. William Brown William Brown, 84, of Litchfield, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility of Hillsdale. He was born June 4, 1921, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Thomas Brown and Mary Jane (Barnett) Brown. He married Molly Crisp September 29, 1940, in Salyersville. She preceded him in death June 26, 2002. Mr. Brown came to Michigan in 1937 from Ohio. He worked for Earl Huston from 1938 to 1969 as a farm manager. He was also a farm manager for the Ray D. Markel estate, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Jackson. He was lovingly raised by his grandparents, William and Francis Nickles. He is survived by three daughters, Fran (Jay) Montgomery of Dublin, Georgia, Delta (Gary) Smith and Virginia (Joe) Collins, both of Litchfield; four sons, Johnny Brown, Jack (Ellen) Brown, and Jerry Brown, all of Litchfield, and Douglas (Linda) Brown of Allen; 24 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, Theresa Stratton of Jackson and Deborah (Bill) Walton of Clearwater, Florida. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Brown, and a nephew, Billy Stratton. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time. Frances Mae Warner Frances Mae Warner, 82, of Homer, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Tendercare in Albion. She was horn April 6, 1923, in Homer, to Harry and Irene (Spencer) Bronson. She married Charles G. Warner December 21, 1939, and he preceded her in death in 1975. Mrs. Warner owned and operated the Green Room Restaurant in Homer for more than 30 years. She also was a volunteer at the Homer Senior Center for several years and enjoyed bingo, euchre, walking, camping, ball games, her grandchildren and helping the Homer youth. Survivors include a daughter, Sue (Jim) Boughner of Florida; four sons, Charles “Jeep” (Sharon) Warner, Robert (Donna) Warner, Keith “Skeeter” (Karen) Warner, and Doug (Ruth) Warner, all of Homer; a sister, Evelyn Hayner of Hanover; two brothers, Richard (Henrietta) Bronson of Kalamazoo, and Gordon (Darleen) Bronson of Homer;15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a great great-grandchild. Clela B. Griffiths Clela B. Griffiths, 86, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, June 8, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility, Hillsdale. She was born May 20, 1919, in Quincy, to Edson and Martha (Penoyer) Marshall, Sr. She graduated from Quincy High School. She married Delbert Griffiths June 28, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1974. Mrs. Griffiths’ life centered around her children, and when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, her life was complete. She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Brent) Mains of Litchfield; a son, Bruce (Linda) Griffiths of North Adams; a sister, Orcelia Davison of Tecumseh; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Merle Eugene Anderson Merle Eugene Anderson, 79, of Battle Creek, formerly of Homer, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Evergreen Manor in Battle Creek. He was born December 6, 1925, in Homer, to C. Burdette and Ethel May (Benham) Anderson. Mr. Anderson worked at Eat-on Manufacturing in Marshall, and the State Prison of Southern Michigan in Jackson. He was the owner-operator of the Mobil Bulk Oil plant in Coldwater for a number of years. Prior to that, he worked with his father and brother in Homer at Burdette Anderson and Sons Mobil Oil. He also worked in Coldwater at Gambles Trucking and Great Plains Gas, from which he retired. After retiring, he moved to California and managed several storage units. Upon returning to Coldwater, he worked part time at Auto Zone until his health failed and he moved to Battle Creek to reside with his daughter. Mr. Anderson served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a Cub Scout Master for several years in Homer, and was a DeMolay Dad Advisor, Past Master and Life member of Humanity Lodge #29 F&AM of Homer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. Mr. Anderson is survived by three children, Rex (Loretta) Anderson of Homer, Linda (Curt) Shaffer of Tekonsha and Janet Seiler of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Phil Anderson of Coldwater; a special niece, Vicki Palmerton of Coldwater; and a brother, R.D. (Mickey) Anderson of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bernice Slate and Daurel Ambler; and two brothers, Burdette “Andy” Anderson Jr. and Robert Anderson. Jeri Lynne Patton-Huff Jeri Lynne Patton-Huff, 38, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died Thursday, June 16, 2005, at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in St. Petersburg. She was born in Albion. Ms. Patton-Huff moved to St. Petersburg from Lexington, Kentucky, in 2005. She had been a substitute teacher in Albion and Homer. She graduated from Homer High School and Spring Arbor College. Ned E. Delaney Ned E. Delaney, 58, of Litchfield, died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born August 10, 1946, in Coldwater, to Edward C. “Ike” and Katherine (Hubbell) Delaney, Sr. He married Marjorie “Marge” Kintigh October 17, 1970, and she survives. Mr. Delaney attended Quincy schools and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. He belonged to the Morenci American Legion. He was also a member of the Jonesville Eagles Lodge and had been a volunteer for the Allen Fire Department many years ago. In addition to his wife, Mr. Delaney is survived by two daughters, Denise (Frank) Gray of Ann Arbor and Krista (William) Martin of Litchfield; a son, Phillip Delaney of Litchfield; two sisters, Gladys (Ted) Wise of Jonesville and Margaret (Henry) Kaiser of Allen; a brother, Edward (Doris Durling) Delaney of Reading; and eight grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Michael Murray officiating. Irene Streets Irene Streets, 92, of Largo, Florida, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, at Wrights Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Seminole, Florida. She was born in Alger, Ohio, and moved to Florida from Tekonsha 39 years ago. Mrs. Streets was a housewife and member of First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks Beach. She is survived by three sons, Donald Streets of Coldwater, Joe Streets of Homer and Terry Streets of Largo; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Germaine O. Mains Germaine O. Mains, 88, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at the Laurels of Coldwater. She was born October 13, 1916, in Coesse, Indiana, to Luella (Yeager) Grimes and the Rev. Joseph Grimes. She graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1934. She married Floyd E. Mains October 16, 1938, in Sunfield. He preceded her in death in 1999. She assisted her husband in the family funeral business in Three Rivers and Homer. Mrs. Mains was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She enjoyed music and sang in choral groups and church choirs. She was a member of the Homer Garden Club, the Sanctuary Choir of the Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She is survived by two daughters, Lana (Robert) Carter of Albion and Brenda (Raymond) Fast of Coldwater; a son, Brent (Carol) Mains of Litchfield; a brother, Buford (Bernadine) Grimes of Battle Creek; a granddaughter, Korinne (Dennis) Maitland of Chatfield, Ohio; three grandsons, Jason (Risa) and Ryan (Kristin) Mains, all of Litchfield, and Justin Fast of Cold-water; four great-granddaughters, Heather, Shannon and Karena Maitland and Lauren Mains; two great-grandsons, Jared and Brennen Mains; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Mains was preceded in death by her mother in 1973, her father in 1955, and a brother, Phil Grimes in 1995. Funeral services were held at the Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church Friday, July 1, 2005, with the Rev. Earl Habecker officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Clarence “Mac” McCone Clarence “Mac” McCone, 77, of Homer, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at his home. He was born January 3, 1928, in Clarendon Township, to Clarence and Edna (McAdams) McCone. Mr. McCone was a truck driver most of his life. He is survived by three daughters, Jane McCone of Kansas, Patsy Palik of Alabama, and Rebecca McCone of Kentucky; two sons, Lonnie (Marilyn) McCone of Homer, and Kit (Rita) McCone of Tennessee; a sister, Opal Wise; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ina Rose; a sister, Fern; and a brother, “Harry.” A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 5, at the J. Virgie M. Watkins Virgie M. Watkins, 69, of Homer, died Wednesday, July 5, 2005, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. She was born October 15, 1935, in Ezel, Kentucky, to Arlin and Allie Watkins. Mrs. Watkins dedicated her life to doing for others, homemaking, keeping her family together, and was a proud member of the Church of God. She was a wonderful woman with a great talent for cooking chocolate, gravy and biscuits, as well as goulash. She is survived by three children, Robin (Richard) Moats of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Randy Williams, and Peggy (Gary) Grigowski of Marshall; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley (Bob) Hendrick and Emma (Fred) Bisel, both of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Terry Williams, and a daughter, Patricia Kay Williams. A funeral service was held Friday, July 8, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Pastor Ronald Hackworth of the Apostolic Christian Fellowship and Worship Church in Marshall officiating. Annetta R. (VanMeter) Clay Annetta R. “Nettie” Clay, 86, of Bronson, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, in Coldwater. She was born June 15, 1919, in Albion, to Oscar and Mary Covey. Mrs. Clay spent most of her life as a resident of Calhoun County. She was a well-known cook at various restaurants in the area. She enjoyed reading, house plants and, of course, cooking. She was preceded in death by her beloved husbands Harold VanMeter and Arlie Clay, Sr., as well as a son, John VanMeter. Mrs. Clay is survived by five children, Duane (Jill) VanMeter of Homer, Donald VanMeter of Tennessee, Patricia (the late Eugene) Cole of Tekonsha, Kathryn (Daniel) Ball of Albion, and Sandra (Melvin) Carty of Tennessee; a sister, Caroline (Marshall) Weddle of Bronson; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Saturday, July 9, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Preacher Mike Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery, Homer.
Jeri L. Emerick Jeri L. Emerick, 61, of Olivet, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Albion. She was born August 14, 1943, in Albion, to Harry and Dorothy Beilfuss. She was the beloved wife of Richard Emerick, whom she married January 4, 1969, in Three Oaks. He survives. Mrs. Emerick devoted her life to being a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She loved art, wrote poetry and was a wonderful sketch artist. She was greatly loved by her family and will be dearly missed. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Samantha (Michael) VanWye of Jackson, and Charlotte (Matthew) Davisson of Springport; four grandchildren, Alexis and Devon VanWye, and Austin and Cheyenne Davisson; and a sister, Jean Alexander of Hillsdale. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Emerick in March 1970, and a sister and a brother. A funeral service was held Monday, July 11, 2005, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. In accordance with her wishes, Mrs. Emerick was cremated.
Paul D. Brooks Paul D. Brooks, 88, of Homer, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at his home. He was born December 22, 1916, in Clarendon Township, to George and Blanche Brooks. He married Norine G. Brooks August 14, 1939, and she preceded him in death January 22, 2004. Mr. Brooks served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was owner of the Mobile service station in Homer for 37 years. He was a member of the VFW and the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed golf. He is survived by two sisters, Pauline Walling and Lois Vandenburg, both of Marshall; three sons, Dennis (Carol Ann) Brooks of Portage, and Stephen (Carol Ann) Brooks and Craig (Teresa) Brooks, all of Battle Creek; a brother, George (Loraine) Brooks of Concord; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, his parents preceded him in death. A funeral service was held Sunday, July 10, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Larry Messer officiating. Jennifer Lynn (Windle) Thomas Jennifer Lynn (Windle) Thomas, 40, of Albion, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Thomas attended Jonesville Area Schools, completing her education with a GED in April 1984. She loved the Medieval times of the Renaissance Period, Celtic history, music, cooking, camping, canoeing, quiet rivers of tranquility, but most of all she loved being put on the back of the Harley like a “Fenderlizard” as she called it. She is survived by “Jim,” her beloved husband; Cookie, her cat; a stepson, Jason A. Thomas of Nashville, Tennessee; her mother, Mary Laubettaux; step-father, Russ Laubettaux; step-siblings, Brian Laubettaux and Valerie Rice of Kalamazoo; and special friends, brothers and sisters of the Tribe MC of Jackson. Mrs. Thomas was employed for six years at Plastigage Corporation as an Extruder Operations/Quality Inspector. She will be missed by members of the Harmony Baptist Church, United Pentecostal Outreach Center of Jackson, and new friends at the New Hope Worship Center in Albion. She was preceded in death by adoptive grandparents Ester (Steffka) Windle and Russ Windle; a cousin, Jon E. Rowe of Jonesville; and her husband’s grandparents, Harley and Sylivia Blevins of Ft. Meyers, Florida. A funeral service will be held Friday, July 15, at 3 p.m. at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Friends and family may call Wednesday (today) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. At her request, cremation followed. Karl Walterhouse Kari L. Walterhouse, 21, of Battle Creek, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Battle Creek Health Systems. She was born May 26, 1984, in Albion, to Albert and Ollie Y. (Walterhouse) Kraft. Ms. Walterhouse was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with her family, and spending time at the Share Center in Battle Creek. Her favorite radio station was 103.3. She is survived by her mother, Ollie (Joe) Ackley of Battle Creek; grandmother, Barb Kraft of Chicago; son, Xavier Michael Walterhouse of Battle Creek; two brothers, James C. Walterhouse of Battle Creek, and James R. Walterhouse of Albion; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father; a son, Dillion; grandparents, Jim and Lavonna Walterhouse; and grandfather, Albert Kraft. A funeral service was held Monday, July 18, at the J. Noah Coblentz Noah Coblentz, 45, of Homer Township, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at home. He was born January 9, 1960, in Hartville, Ohio, to Vernon and Laura Coblentz. Mr. Coblentz was a farmer and buggy builder. He married Esther Troyer May 14, 1981, and she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Laura Ann, Regina, Ruth and Hannah; a son, Aaron Coblentz; two sisters, Leah (Harry) Miller, Jr., of West Unity, Ohio, and Marjorie (Donald Ray) Wagler of McBain; three brothers, Amos Coblentz and Vernon Coblentz, Jr., both of Homer, and Perry Coblentz of Mays Lick, Kentucky. Mabelle A. Waid Mabelle A. Waid, 73, formerly of Homer, died Monday, July 18, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Gainesville, Florida. She was born March 1, 1932, in Homer, to Alonzo H. and Mabelle (Kendall) Wyant. She married Richard “Dick” Waid January 22, 1948, and he preceded her in death May 5, 1993. Mrs. Waid was a homemaker and a nurse’s aid in Homer and Marshall and she also worked in the deli at the Homer grocery store. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Homer, former member of the Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia, and a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. She enjoyed crocheting, teaching Sunday school, watching birds, especially humming birds, cross word puzzles, being with children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed riding her bike around the neighborhood and visiting with people along the way. She is survived by four daughters, Mary J. (Robert) Koch of Homer, Vicki A. (Terry) Warner of Grand Rapids, Jill A. (Richard) Lanphar of Haines City, Florida, and Julia Kay (John) Ebbs of Gainesville; a son, Craig A. (Nancy) Waid of Homer; two sisters, Eva Summerfield of Marshall and Margaret Jones of Tekonsha; a brother, Robert “Abe” Wyant of Lansing; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Paul Wyant. Mildred I. Panting Mildred I. Panting, 94, of Girard, died Sunday, July 24, 2005, at Community Health Center, Coldwater. She was born April 19, 1911, to Ren and Frances (Ellis) Cornish in Hillsdale County, Amboy Township. She was a resident of the Homer and Tekonsha area until 1977. She worked in a restaurant and at the Hillsdale Pants Factory in Hillsdale. She married Leslie Panting April 3, 1931, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage before his passing on May 25, 1982. She and her husband farmed in Clarendon Township for 47 years. She was once a member of Pritchard Extension Club and later a member of S.E. Clarendon Extension as well as a member of Bentley Corners Farm Bureau. Mrs. Panting is survived by her brothers Dale (Rachael) Cornish of Jackson, and Wayne (Alice) Cornish of Homer; nieces and nephews, Helen (Jim) Avery, Opal Dille, Anita (Richard) Drake, Ann (Gary) Pierce, Elaine (Dan) Hicks, Kara Parks and Connie, Kevin (Laura), Jeffrey (Holly) and Darrin (Kimberly) Cornish; 24 grand nieces and nephews; and many great grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her bother Roscoe Cornish and her sister Vera Smith. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 28, at 1 p.m. at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Michael Ortell officiating. Phebe Rose Noblit Perigan Phebe Rose Noblit Perigan, 89, of Litchfield, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at the Laurels of Coldwater. Mrs. Perigan was born November 22, 1915, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Rutherford and Oaklee (Edgar) Durling. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1935 and worked for 21 years at Corning Glass Co. in Albion. She was a 50-year member of Litchfield Rebekah Lodge. Her first husband, Russell Clifford Noblit, preceded her in death, as did their son, Leroy Edward Noblit. She then married Homer Perigan, who also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Oaklee (Larry) Gagnon of Dearborn; a sister, Dorothy Meredith of Hudson; a brother, Kay Durling of Coldwater; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 2, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Iva Short Iva Short, 80, of Albion, died Tuesday, August 9, 2005, at Battle Creek Health System. She was born September 12, 1924, in Lackey, Kentucky, to Liberty and Artillin (Shepard) Bradley. She married August Henry Short December 27, 1945, and he survives. Mrs. Short was a cook at Pioneer Truck Stop for 17 years. She also worked at Union Steel, McGraw Edison and The Dinner Bell. She was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Parma, and a life member of Albion V.F.W. and American Legion. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, square dancing and especially loved babies. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Tim) Gannon of Concord; a son, Thomas (Donna) Short of Albion; two sisters, Maudie Custer of Coldwater and Meadie Fraley of Tekonsha; two brothers, Clifford Bradley of Concord and Tom Bradley of Springport; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Doris E. Munn Doris E. Munn, 95, of Homer, died Monday, August 8, 2005, at her home. She was born August 5, 1910, in Burlington, to Myron and Edna (Cook) Blakeman. She married Frederick W. Christophel, then Aaron E. Munn, both of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Munn lived in Burling-ton for several years, then Duck Lake before moving to Homer. She was a homemaker all her life, and worked on the family farm as well. She enjoyed painting, gardening and the outdoors. She was very family oriented. Mrs. Munn is survived by two daughters, Bertha Forward of Three Rivers and Elizabeth Preston of The Villages, Florida; a son, Duane (Grace) Christophel of Homer; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Fred Christophel; a great-grandson, Dustin Castle; four sisters; and three brothers. Duane R. Gregg Duane R. Gregg, 81, of Homer, died Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at Battle Creek Health System. Mr. Gregg was born December 10, 1923, in Clarendon, to Bert and Lillian (Ballentine) Gregg. He married Shirley Holmes March 15, 1947. She survives. Mr. Gregg served in the U.S. Army during World War II, taking part in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was director of public works for the Village of Homer until he retired in 1986. He served with the Homer Fire Department for 37 years, and was on the village council for many years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Homer, VFW Post 9411 and the Moose Lodge. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Karen (Paul) Kujala of Traverse City; two brothers, Robert Gregg of St. Ignace and Donald Gregg of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Nick Kujala of Royal Oak, Erik Kujala of Traverse City, Kristen Nielson of Traverse City and Jason Gregg of Largo, Florida; and three great-grandchildren. JoAnn E. Wildt JoAnn E. Wildt, 70, of Homer, formerly of Pleasant Lake, died Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at University of Michigan Health System. Mrs. Wildt was born March 23, 1935, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Dr. Francis W. and Carol (Haskins) Bartholic. She married Wayne Wildt June 21, 1974. He survives. Mrs. Wildt worked at Falconer’s clothing store in Homer, then at the Bank of Albion. She then worked in the commercial loan department at Comerica Bank in Jackson, retiring in 1996. Mrs. Wildt wintered in Leesburg, Florida, and spent time at her cottage in upper New York State. She enjoyed traveling, cooking and especially family get-togethers. In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Cindy Kirkbride, Cathi (Louie) Kroul and Teri (Eric) Fogel, all of Homer; a son, David (Yvette) Riker of New Orleans; a sister, Cathie (Robert) Apgar of Ocala, Florida; two brothers, Jon (Elaine) Bartholic of Laingsburg, and Glenn (Dawn) Bartholic of Hendersonville, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Beulah Kinney Clark Beulah Kinney Clark, 93, of Hillsdale, died Friday, August 12, 2005, at the Mac McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. Mrs. Clark was born March 9, 1912, in Amboy Township in Hillsdale County to Leonard and Myrtle (Spitler) Kizer. After graduating from Hillsdale High School in 1929, she married Earl J. Kinney of Reading. He preceded her in death in 1969. She later married Paul E. Clark of Reading. He preceded her in death n 1996. Mrs. Clark and her first husband Earl Kinney co-owned Kinney’s produce and fruit farm on Spring Street in Hillsdale for 28 years. She was a long-time member of the Reading United Methodist Church, Reading Shakespeare Club, Farm Bureau and Eastern Star. She was a great fan of the Detroit Tigers, rarely missing a radio broadcast of their games on WCSR. Mrs. Clark spent 17 winters in Texas with her second husband. Survivors include a son, Richard “Kip” (Judy Stanfield) Kinney of Ann Arbor; a daughter, Mary Jane (Fred) Saxton of Homer; a stepson, the Rev. J. Robert (Mary) Clark of Peru, Indiana; two stepdaughters, Nancy Kuzniar of Milan and Carole Fisher of Hillsdale; four grandchildren, Steve Kinney of Houston, Tom Kinney of Commerce, Chad Saxton of Mears, and Matt Saxton of Battle Creek; six step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, special care giver Betty Leaders of Hillsdale; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Shelley Jo Dirkse Shelley Jo Dirkse, 55, of Marshall, died Friday, August 12, 2005, at her home in the loving care of her family. Mrs. Dirkse was born June 25, 1950, in Marshall to Richard C. and Beatrice (Boyd) Walters, Jr. They survive. She lived in the Marshall area most of her life, graduating from Marshall High School in 1968. She received a degree in human ecology from Michigan State University. She married David Dirkse July 21, 1984, in a garden wedding at their home in Marshall. He survives. Mrs. Dirkse was employed for 22 years as the director of liquid fuels and inventory control at Walters-Dimmick Petroleum, Inc. She was a talented artist who enjoyed decorating her home with the many beautiful folk-art crafts she created. She was also a wonderful hostess and enjoyed entertaining her family and friends at her home. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed the time they were able to spend with each other. A favorite place that the family enjoyed spending time was their cottage on Crystal Lake. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Dirkse is survived by a daughter, Susannah Dirkse, a student at Michigan State University; a son, Daniel Dirkse, a student at Central Michigan University; a brother, John Walters of Marshall; and a sister, Martha Goben of Tekonsha. A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Dirkse’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 17, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. Thomas “Sam” Miller Thomas “Sam” Miller, 51, of Homer, died Thursday, August 11, 2005, at his home. Mr. Miller was born November 29, 1953, in Albion to Thomas J. and Minnie A. (May) Miller. They survive in Homer. He married Cathy Shaw August 31, 1985. She survives. Mr. Miller was a CNC operator and was employed by Addison Products, Jesco Industries, Yukon Manufacturing and currently was employed at Miller Brothers in Homer. He was a member of Cook’s Prairie Baptist Church and enjoyed farming, tractors, drag racing and especially his family. In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include two daughters, Leah (Robert) Hitz of Homer, and Amy Clason of Hillsdale; a son, James Miller of Homer; four sisters, Ruth (Ken) Hoyt of Homer, Joyce (Randy) Payne of Albion, Shirley (Russ) Wilson of Homer, and Vickie (Doug) Skelly of Litchfield; and six grandchildren. Katherine Irene Woods Katherine Irene Woods, 84, of Homer, died Thursday, August 11, 2005, in Homer. Mrs. Woods was born July 25, 1921, in McGuffy, Ohio, to Walker and Alka (Fraley) Birchfield. She married Rolland George Woods, Sr., August 5, 1939. He preceded her in death February 23, 1982, Mrs. Woods was a homemaker. She was a member of the Albion and Homer Red Hats Ladies Society and enjoyed sewing, quilting, walking and senior activities. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Cornell (Jim Risner) of Parma; three sons, Rolland Woods of Parma, John (Sharon) Woods of Albion, and Steven (Lisa) Woods of Auburn, Indiana; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille Dudek of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Shirley (Fred) Dale of Coldwater. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers. Funeral services were held Monday, August 15, at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Indiana, with Pastor Monroe Collins officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery in Fremont. Donna E. Crumbley Donna E. Crumbley, 92, of Battle Creek, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at Battle Creek Health Systems. She was born October 18, 1912, in Homer, to James and Nell (Hatch) Crumbley. She retired from Denoyer Chevrolet in Battle Creek after many years of employment. She enjoyed reading. Ralph Innis Ralph Innis, 84, of Litchfield Township, died Friday, August 19, 2005, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born July 30, 1921, in Kalkaska County, to William and Neila (Black) Innis and attended Mancelona High School. He married Helen Wellman January 19, 1941, and she survives. Mr. Innis served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and had been employed 40 years as a plant manager and engineer at Simpson Industries, Inc., in Litchfield. He retired in 1983. Active in his community, he attended the First Baptist Church in Litchfield for more than 50 years, served on the City Council and the Litchfield Community School Board. He was also a past member of the Toastmasters International. In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Louis (Phyllis) Vincent, Lulu-Belle (Bill) Hollstein and Pat (Moises) Silva, all of Litchfield, Pat (Norman) Brandeberry of Prattville, Terry (Debra) Innis of Irvine, California, Arla Leininger of Hanover, and Rose (Richard) Abbeg of Quincy; a brother, Paul Innis of Grand Rapids; 22 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Robert Innis. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Litchfield, with Pastor Brent Stille officiating. James Paul Henry James Paul Henry, 74, of Marshall, died Friday, August 19, 2005, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Mr. Henry was born December 23, 1930, in Detroit, to John W. and Viola M. (Blake) Henry. He married the former Arloa Lite October 15, 1955, in Lowell. She survives. Mr. Henry served 20 years in the United States Navy. He went to work at State Farm Insurance Company’s regional office in Marshall in 1963. After 13 years he went to work at Walker Manufacturing. He retired in 1986. Mr. Henry was active in the Masonic Lodge, where he held numerous offices. He was a life member, past Master and currently served as secretary of the St. Albans Lodge #20 F&AM. He was a life member and former office, in the Homer chapter #130 R&AM. Mr. Henry was also a member of the Marshall Claude E. Hale VFW Post 4073 and the American Legion Post 79. He enjoyed playing golf, working crossword puzzles, reading, and listening to the Detroit Tigers and Lions on the radio. In addition to his wife, Mr. Henry is survived by two sons, Michael Henry of Olivet, and Dennis (Robyn) Henry of Marshall; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Cory Henry, of Wayland; three brothers, George W. Henry of San Diego, John Henry and Harold Henry, both of Wayland; and a sister, Margaret Willette of Clarksville. Visitation will be today (Wednesday) at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with family receiving friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Dolores I. Smith Dolores I. Smith, 72, of Butler Township, died Saturday, August 27, 2005, at home. She was born November 7, 1932, in Jackson, to Carroll and Gladys (Southfield) Wade, and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1950. She married Russell Smith June 10, 1951, and he survives. She had been employed at Game Time, Litchfield Dairy, Consumers Power Co. and the University of Michigan accounting department. Mrs. Smith was a great homemaker and especially enjoyed writing long letters to keep her family updated and in touch with each other. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Stacy (Cete) Marino of Princeton, Florida; three sons, Jeff Smith of Walled Lake, Steve (Patti) Smith of Northville and Eric (Vania) Smith of Louisville, Kentucky; two brothers, Terry (Darlene) Wade of Litchfield and Thomas (Marilyn) Wade of Longwood, Florida; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Smith; and a brother, Richard Wade. Harry P. Nelligan Harry P. Nelligan, 92, of Hillsdale, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility, Hillsdale. He was born January 30, 1913, in Quincy, to Philip E. and Maude (Thompson) Nelligan. Mr. Nelligan was a life-long area resident and started the first one-stop supermarket in Hillsdale County in 1945. He retired as plant manager of the Coldwater Service Company of Simpson Industries, Inc. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a 60-year member and past commander of the Harry S. Kelley American Legion Post #279 of Litchfield. He had also formerly belonged to the Hillsdale Elks Lodge #1575 and served as Litchfield village president. Mr. Nelligan is survived by two daughters, Marcia (Al) Clark of Leonidas and Nancy (Dale) Shields of Hillsdale; a sister, Ketha Walkup of Litchfield; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three wives, Dorothy (Struble), Erna (Ely) and Florence Joe (Bean); two brothers, Kenneth and Carl; and a daughter, Mary Gibson. Funeral services were held Friday, September 2, at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Robert F. Sargent Robert F. Sargent, 64, of Quincy, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Mr. Sargent was born September 27, 1940, in Hillsdale, to Harold and Donna (Holtsberry) Sargent. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1959. He married Darene Henry September 20, 1991. She survives. Mr. Sargent was a retired owner of Sarge’s Market, Kaleidoscope Restaurant and Integrity Plus Realty, all of Quincy. Mr. Sargent belonged to the Mt. Vernon F&AM Lodge 166, serving as District Deputy Instructor, Grand Masters Representative, District Deputy Grand Master and Region IV Grand Lecturer. He was a former member of the Hillsdale Elks Lodge, Son of Legionnaires, Litchfield Lion’s Club, member and past president of Quincy Rotary, member and past president of Quincy Chamber of Commerce, mayor of Quincy, and member and past chairman of Branch County Commissioners. Mr. Sargent received the Paul Harris Fellowship award and Quincy Citizen of the Year award. In addition, he supported Branch County 4-H and gave scholarships to Quincy High School graduates for many years. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Tamara (Donald) Reese of Ft. Wayne; a son, Patrick (Barbara) Sargent of Bronson; a step-daughter, Darla (Roy) Pohl of Quincy; a stepson, Duane (Hope) Sellers of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his father, Harold Sargent of Hillsdale; a sister, Pamela (Robert) Douglas of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Larry (Sharon) Sargent of Cadillac and Dennis (Darlene) Sargent of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and an infant brother. Memorial services and Masonic services will be held Friday, September 9, at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Quincy. Harry LeRoy Taylor Harry LeRoy Taylor, 75, of Harrison, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at his daughter’s home. He was born October 15, 1929, in Salina, Ohio, to Harold and Elizabeth (Bowder) Taylor. Mr. Taylor worked as a custodian for public schools in Saline, California, for 12 years until retiring in 1992. He then moved to Harrison. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and camping. Mr. Taylor is survived by a daughter, Nerissa “Cookie” (Perry) Barnett of Litchfield; a sister, Lois Smith of Jonesville; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister and a great-grandson. A graveside service will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Cement City Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Doris M. Thomas Doris M. Thomas, 93, of Homer, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility in Battle Creek. She was born February 7, 1912, in Homer Township, to Charles I. and Lula (Bayn) Holmes. She married Russell Thomas June 28, 1931, and he preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Thomas was a life-long resident of Homer. She was a rural schoolteacher in the Agnew School District. She was a member of Homer Presbyterian Church, its Faith Circle and Stella Chapter of Eastern Star. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading and sewing. Mrs. Thomas is survived by a son, Robert (Joyce) Thomas of Homer; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Thomas of Homer; four sisters, Dorothy Avery of Homer, Marjorie Bunnell of Canton, Marie Norton of Marshall and Shirley Gregg of Homer; four grandchildren, Barb and Jerry Bussing of Homer, Deb and Daryl Myer of Battle Creek, Bryan and Michele Thomas of Marshall and Kevin Thomas of Homer; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Agnes M. Holibaugh Agnes M. Holibaugh, 86, of Marshall, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Tendercare of Marshall. Mrs. Holibaugh was born March 9, 1919, in Wexford County, Kentucky, to Claude and Elsie (Cady) Wilbur. She married Lester E. Holibaugh January 4, 1937, in Auburn, Indiana. He preceded her in death February 23, 1990. Mrs. Holibaugh lived in the Tekonsha and Marshall areas the majority of her life. She was a homemaker. She worked at the Win Shuler’s Hotel during the 1940s and 1950s. She loved working in her garden and being outdoors. One of her favorite pastimes was going to flea markets and yard sales. Mrs. Holibaugh is survived by a daughter, Judy (Russell) Camp of Albion; sons, Thomas (Janice) Holibaugh of Battle Creek, Richard (Betty) Holibaugh of Waterloo, Indiana, Terry (Cheryl) Holibaugh of Coldwater, James (Diane) Holibaugh of Angola, Indiana, Rex (Carol) Holibaugh of Homer and Ronald (Emma) Holibaugh of Lake City; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna Moore of Baldwin, Carmen Young of Albion, Audrey Mathews of Florida, Marie Robinson of Mesick, Emma D. Local teens die in car accident by Darby Cornelius Litchfield residents Jared Dale Maggard, 17, and Richelle Nicole Moulton, 17, both of 814 Riverside Drive Apartment A-2, were killed in a one-car accident Saturday night. The accident occurred at 11:20 p.m. in Litchfield Township on Cronk Road north of Mosherville Road. Maggard was driving southbound on Cronk Road when he lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway and striking a tree. Moulton was the only passenger. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Seat belts were worn. The crash is under investigation by the Hillsdale County Sheriff Department Accident Investigation Unit. Deputies were assisted on the scene by Reading Emergency Unit, Litchfield Fire Department and Homer Fire Department. Maggard attended Homer Alternative High School last year. “He was a good guy,” Homer Alternative Education Director Bill Mullaly noted. “A lot of the kids liked him. He was loud and funny. He made everybody laugh. He always had wild, crazy stories to tell, and always made things sound exciting.” Mullaly said in his 10 years as director, he’s never had a student pass away. “It’s a real tragedy because he was so young. It’s strange knowing he won’t ever be back.” Maggard’s friends and fellow students will miss him. “Jared was like a brother to me,” Matt Harris, 17, said. “I’m going to get a tattoo of his name.” “I grew up with Jared,” Meagan Caldwell, 17, said. “We used to hang out all the time. I’ve never known anyone my age who died like this.”
Richelle Nicole Moulton Richelle Nicole Moulton, 17, of Concord, died Saturday, September 10, 2005, in Hillsdale County. She was born November 29, 1987, in Jackson, to Rickie and Michelle (Sanders) Moulton. She graduated from Albion High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and yearbook committee. She was attending Kellogg Community College and working as a waitress for Kasy’s Restaurant in Litchfield. Miss Moulton enjoyed soccer, shopping and visiting with friends. Jared D. Maggard-Nemore Jared D. Maggard-Nemore, 17, of Litchfield, and formerly of Homer, died Sunday, September 11, 2005, in Hillsdale County. Mr. Maggard-Nemore formerly attended Homer Alternative High School. He was known for his witty sense of humor and love of laughter. He enjoyed cars, fishing, basketball, loud music, his x-box, but most of all his Momma. He made an impact on everyone who knew him. Survivors include his parents, Faye and John P. Leonard D. Quimby Leonard D. Quimby, 63, of Homer, died Saturday, September 17, 2005, at his home. He was born April 24, 1942, in Butler Township, to Donald and Margaret M. (Miller) Quimby. Mr. Quimby married Bridget Boughner December 1, 1979, and she survives. He was a truck driver for Miller Truck and Storage in Jackson for 25 years. He also worked for Blue Arrow and Red O’Dell Trucking. Mr. Quimby enjoyed lawn care, dogs, motorcycles, the Dunebuggy Club and tinkering in the garage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Kristina D. Ashley of Marshall, Constance (Brian) Cheeseman of Eckford, Julie (Jamie) Stadtfeld of Homer, and Patricia (Greg) Tomanica and Tiffany M. Larry Patrick Larry Patrick, 58, of Homer, died Friday, September 16, 2005, at his home. He was born January 23, 1947, in Hueyville, Kentucky, to James Monroe and Naomi (Terry) Patrick. He married Glenna Robinson March 12, 1965, and she preceded him in death in November 2002. Mr. Patrick was a molder for Midwest Foundry in Marshall for 23 years. He also worked for Albion Industries and Huffman Farms. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, writing poetry, painting pictures, collecting, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Gannon Ratliff Gannon Ratliff, 60, of Tekonsha, died Saturday, September 24, 2005, at his home. He was born January 17, 1945, in Garrett, Kentucky, to Samuel Nathan and Virgie (Pratt) Ratliff. He married Roberta Perkins December 9, 1981, and she survives. Mr. Ratliff worked as a foreman and tool pusher in the oil fields. In addition to spending time with family and friends, he enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, traveling, playing cards, telling jokes, collecting old cars and going to flea markets. He was baptized and became a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Ratliff was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lavonna Walterhouse and Azonna Selles; three brothers, Hurle Ratliff, Shannon Ratliff and Robert Williams; a daughter, Ginger Ratliff; and two grandsons, James Beam and Jesse Cousino Ratliff. Dawn M. Tyszko Dawn M. Tyszko, 43, of Litchfield, died Saturday, September 24, 2005, at her home. She was born October 10, 1961, to Donald and Lois (Daglow) Gunst. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1979. She married Duke Tyszko February 14, 1999, and he survives. Mrs. Tyszko was employed 14 years at Manchester Plastics and the past five years at Hi-Lex Controls, Litchfield. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kala Robinson of Bronson; a sister, Dora Fraley of Litchfield; two brothers, Wesley Lorenz of Tennessee and Ralph Goodwin of Bronson; her stepmother, Marjorie Gunst of Litchfield; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and special friends Lisa Miller and Danny and Carl Prater. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Ernestine Tackett Ernestine Tackett, 73, of Homer, died Sunday, September 25, 2005, at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky. Mrs. Tackett was born December 23, 1931, in Pike County, to Clarence and Jean (Lovelace) Stiltner. She married Raymond “Vic” Tackett January 20, 1953, in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death September 9, 1972. Mrs. Tackett was a resident of the area most of her life. She retired as quality control inspector from Corning Glass in 1975. She was a member of the Albion Church of Christ. She enjoyed crocheting, Nascar racing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Griffith and Florine Coburn, both of Homer; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Stiltner of Jonesville and Margaret Stiltner of Hazel Green, Kentucky; and four brothers, John Stiltner, William (Zeldenia) Stiltner and Kenny (Shirley) Stiltner, all of Belcher, Kentucky, and Bobby Rae (Lena Mae) Stiltner of Pikeville. Mrs. Tackett was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby C. and James Danny Stiltner, and a sister, Magdlene Smith. Joan Elizabeth Wagoner Joan Elizabeth Wagoner, 93, of Albion, formerly of Homer, died Friday, September 30, 2005, at Tendercare of Albion. She was born May 13, 1912, in Vicksburg, to John Henry and Jennie Frances (Shaver) Weimer. She married Dale E. Wagoner of Homer on August 20, 1938, in Vicksburg. He preceded her in death May 11, 2000. Mrs. Wagoner graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1930. After graduation she attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. She received a Life Teaching Degree. She taught in Vicksburg, Ashley and Homer, mostly as a music teacher, but as a second grade teacher as well. She enjoyed participating in musical performances, first as a teacher with productions of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas - The Midado and H.M.S. Pinafore, Handel’s Messiah and as an organizer of such student singing groups as the “56-5” and later as an accompanist in civic theatre productions of Oliver! and the Mikado. During her career, she took extension classes and summer classes at Western and completed her bachelor’s degree. Mrs. Wagoner taught for 27-and-a-half years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Mary Martha Circle. She was an avid bird watcher and she enjoyed gardening. She is survived by a daughter, Jane Moore of Concord; a son, William (Toni) Wagoner of Pierson; four grandsons, Brent (Susan) Michael and Scott (Elizabeth) Michael, both of Homer, and Michael Wagoner and Steven (Dawn) Wagoner, both of Traverse City; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother; four sisters; and a son, Thomas. Funeral services were held Monday, October 3, 2005, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Jerry L. Butters Jerry L. Butters, 49, of Homer, died Saturday, October 1, 2005, at his home. He was born October 11, 1955, in Albion, to Darrel and Marcia (Hammontree) Butters. He married Jean Shelters August 12, 1989, and she survives. They built their own home together in 1990. Mr. Butters graduated from Homer High School in 1973 and won the State Championship for debate for the school that year. In 1973 he also won the FFA Gold Award with his Parliamentary Procedure team. He was active in 4-H throughout his school years. He was a corrections officer for the State Prison System for 26 years, serving as superintendent of Metal Furniture M.S.I. Industries. He was a partner in S.C.M. Pole Buildings and J & D Enterprises of Michigan. He also farmed with his family. He enjoyed old cars, hunting, fishing and reading, especially history. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Preston J. Butters of Homer; his mother, Marcia Butters of Homer; two sisters, Vicki (Dave) Krake of Peoria, Illinois, and Polly (Craig) Talboon of South Bend, Indiana; and two brothers, Randy (Brenda) Butters of Homer and Terry (Pam) Butters of South Connellsville, Pennsylvania. His father Darrel preceded him in death in May 1999. A funeral service will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Marion L. Baker Marion L. Baker, 96, of Concord, died Sunday, October 2, 2005, at her residence. She was born March 16, 1909, in Calhoun County, to Clarence and Ethel Mae (Mansfield) Wintersteen. She married Maurice A. “Shorty” Baker, Sr. April 20, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio. He preceded her in death January 15, 1990. Mrs. Baker was a lifelong resident of the area. She worked for Randall Beans in Tekonsha, she was a homemaker, and she worked at Albion College in the food service department. She was a member of the Universalist Church in Concord. She is survived by a son, Harvey (Myrtie) Baker of Concord; two daughters-in-law, Jannie Smith of Homer and Vera Baker of Concord; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, William Wintersteen of Zephyr Hills, Florida. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by three sons, Calvin Baker, Tom Baker and Dale Smith; two brothers, Donald Wintersteen and John Wintersteen; two sisters, Mable Campbell and Alta Wintersteen; and a grandson, Thomas John Baker. Lorene Yates Lorene Yates, 45, of Albion, died suddenly Wednesday, October 5, 2005, in Clarence Township. She was born January 3, 1960, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Russell and Tressie (Mullins) Hampton. She married Carl Everett Yates December 4, 1986, in Marshall, and he preceded her in death July 7, 2004. Mrs. Yates was a resident of the area for 40 years. She attended Albion High School, worked at Team 1 Plastics, Foodland as a manager. She enjoyed crocheting, painting, quilting, crafts and gardening. She is survived by two daughters, Angela Brown and Danielle Yates of Albion; a sister, Connie (Rich) Johnson of Albion; a brother, Michael Hampton of Marshall; her parents, Russell and Tressie Hampton; and mother-in-law Mary Yates of Albion. Suthard G. Butters Suthard G. Butters, 85, of Pulaski, died Thursday, October 6, 2005, at Foote Health System in Jackson. He was born October 23, 1919, in Pulaski Township, to Jerome and Olive (Hutchins) Butters. Mr. Butters served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a machine operator for Service Castors in Jackson for 10 years and Walker Manufacturing for 20 years. He was a former member of the Big 9 Sportsmen Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding around the countryside and current events. Mr. Butters is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Sanders of Spring Arbor; a son, Tom (Jewel) Butters of Homer; a brother, Gilbert (Barbara) Butters of Hanover; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Jerome; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Curtis and Wallace; and a sister, Margaret Rhoades. Medie Fraley Medie Fraley, 85, of Tekonsha, died Saturday, October 22, 2005, at her home. She was born April 24, 1920, in Mousie, Kentucky, to Liberty and Artilia (Shepherd) Bradley. She married Rice Fraley in 1937 in Fremont, Indiana, and he preceded her in death in 1987. Mrs. Fraley worked as a press operator at Wagoner Industries in Reading for 15 years and also at Randall’s Bean Factory in Tekonsha. She enjoyed bingo, fishing, gardening and cooking, and especially having her family home on Sunday. In later years, she attended the Marian E. Burch Adult Day Care Center in Battle Creek. Mrs. Fraley is survived by four daughters, Virginia (Mahlon) Cleckner of Angola, Indiana, Judy (Robert) Wren of Hudson, Indiana, Cathy (Earl) Shepherd of Tekonsha, and Candy (Tom) Tysko of Albion; five sons, Ronnie (Karen) Fraley of Fremont, Indiana, Rice (Jackie) Fraley, Jr. of Marcellus, Gerald (Dee) Fraley of Cecil, Ohio, Danny (Patti) Fraley of Quincy, and Timothy (Dora) Fraley of Litchfield; a sister, Maudie Custer of Coldwater; two brothers, Clifford Bradley of Concord and Tom Bradley of Springport; 38 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Charlotte H. “Char” Taylor Charlotte H. “Char” Taylor, 87, of Homer, died Saturday, October 22, 2005, at Borgess Medical Center. She was born January 4, 1918, in Concord Township, to Jay and Lillian (Pittelkow) Davis. She married Vernon Taylor in 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Homer. She enjoyed needlepoint, maintaining her home and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter, Sandy (John) Sharp of North Branch; a sister, Mary Pickell of Spring Arbor; two grandchildren, Chris (Tanya) Sharp and Chad (Jen) Sharp; a great-grandchild, Savannah Sharp; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl B. Holden Carl B. Holden, 89, of Cadillac, died Wednesday, October 19, at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. He was born April 22, 1916, in Coldwater, to Carl and Margaret (Levy) Holden. He married Maxine M. Hampton June 6, 1942, in Napoleon, Ohio. Mr. Holden was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was active at Harbor View activities and enjoyed playing cards. He also loved to fish. He was a former member of the Homer Methodist Church. Mr. Holden is survived by his wife, Maxine Holden of Cadillac; children, Janice (Keith) Rosenau of Houghton Lake, Carleen Persson of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Margaret Brown of Dowling; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Barnard of Battle Creek. Richard L. Meyer Richard L. Meyer, 76, of Albion, died Friday, October 14, 2005, at Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte. He was born in Detroit. He married Barbara J. Hill November 25, 1949, and she survives. Mr. Meyer was a 1950 graduate of Albion College. He earned a law degree in 1951 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He retired in 1991 from his 39-year career with State Farm Insurance. During his tenure with State Farm, he worked in various positions in four states, rising from claims adjustor to deputy regional vice president. He was a member of numerous organizations, including the Rotary Club of Albion, where he served as club president; the Michigan and Calhoun County Bar Associations; the Albion Planning Commission, where he served as chair; the Greater Albion Alliance; Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce; the Shrine Clubs of Jackson, Battle Creek and Peoria, Illinois; the Masons; Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; and Albion College’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee. He was previously a member of many other organizations including serving as board chairman of the Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his wife, Mr. Meyer is survived by children Margaret (Conrad) Sindt of Homer, Philip (Gloria) Meyer of Holland, and Douglas Meyer of New York, New York; grandchildren Benjamin, Caitlin and Caroline Meyer of Holland; and a sister, Gladys Trelease of Dover, New Jersey. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Wesley Chapel of First United Methodist Church, Albion. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. preceding the service. The Rev. Edward J. Hagan Edward J. Hagan, 72, of Albion, died Thursday, October 27, 2005, at Battle Creek Health Systems. He was born January 3, 1933, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Edward W. and Dorothy M. (Lingle) Hagan. He married Nellie V. Zuraviell May 8, 1972, in Albion, and she survives. Mr. Hagan was a resident of the area since 1995. He was a mail carrier in Bloomington, Indiana, before moving to Albion. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korea and Vietnam conflicts. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge of Albion and Bloomington, and the American Legion and V.F.W. of Bloomington. He enjoyed fishing, reading biographies and bowling. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hagan is survived by daughters Dorothy May (David) Sharp of Bloomington, Mary (Gary) Mosier of Martinsville, Indiana, and Elizabeth Ann (Steven) Tuck of Hamilton, Ohio; a stepdaughter Michelle (Oscar) Johnson of Albion; a half brother Basil Hagan of Indianapolis, Indiana; a sister-in-law Irene Zuraviell of Homer; and six grandchildren, Justin, Anna, Sarah, Asher, Emily and Brandi. Ernest P. Frey Ernest P. Frey, 84, died quietly Friday, November 4, 2005, at his residence in Homer in the presence of his family and his special nurse Daryl Diebler. He was born January 13, 1921, in Jackson, to William J. and Clara (Billings) Frey. He married Lola M. Galbreath May 30, 1942, in Jackson. She survives. Mr. Frey spent most of his life as a resident of Jackson, and joined his daughter in Homer in 2000. He was a proud player on the Minor League baseball team in Fostoria, Ohio, as a first baseman until he enlisted in the service. He served in Army Air Corps in WWII, in the European theater, where he was shot down and spent nine months as a POW. Mr. Frey worked at Macklin in Jackson and Aeroquip, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Burr Oak Golf Club and Old Timers Baseball Club. He loved to golf and fish. In addition to his beloved wife, Mr. Frey is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Williams of Homer and Nancy (James) Snook of Vicksburg; two sons, Martin (Marlene) Frey and Brian Frey, both of Jackson; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, William J. (Patricia) Frey, Jr. of Stoney Lake, and Eugene H. Frey of Jackson; a sister, Rita M. Frey of Jackson; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Tobin. A funeral mass was held Tuesday, November 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Jackson, with Fr. Riley officiating. Douglas Eugene Miller Douglas Eugene Miller, 52, of Homer, died Wednesday, November 9, 2005, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He was born March 28, 1953, in Albion, to James Arthur “Junior” and Nancy J. (Koons) Miller. He loved motorcycles, camping, fishing, music, every kid he ever met, and living in Florida in the winter months. Mr. Miller will be missed by his many friends at ADAPT. He is survived by four sisters, Betty Ann (Bob) Braden of Knoxville, Tennessee, Kathleen (David) Dirschell of Coldwater, Judy Kaye Lack and special friend Ino Banda of Homer, and Tamara Jane (David) Crandall of Litchfield; a brother, Wesley James Miller of Homer; 13 nieces and nephews; 10 great nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother in October of 1996 and his father in April of 2002. Keith H. Marshall Keith H. Marshall, 53, of Homer, died Saturday, November 12, 2005, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. He was born January 17, 1952, in Albion, to Richard W. and Beverly (Helmer) Marshall. He married Sharon Kimball June 26, 1996, and she survives. Mr. Marshall was a self-employed farmer all his life. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Michigan Cattleman’s Association, active in 4-H and enjoyed hunting. He loved country dancing and was a member of Country Drifters, a country western dance club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Kerri Jeffries Marshall, Ariel Jeffries and Britnee Jeffries Marshall, all of Homer; a stepdaughter, Sherri Jeffries of Ohio; two stepsons, Bill (Kim) Zachow and Greg (Amy) Zachow, both of Litchfield; his parents, Richard and Beverly Marshall of Homer; three sisters, Ruth (Doug) Hunt of Albion, Barb (Joe) Poprawa of Lansing, and Patti (Wayne) Jarvis of Concord; a twin brother, Kent (Loretta) Marshall of Reading; six grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. Juanita K. Maurer Juanita K. Maurer, 82, of Portage, formerly of Homer, died Friday, November 11, 2005, at Dimondale Nursing Home of Dimondale. She was born January 21, 1923, in Dickson, Tennessee, to Leo and Mary (Tucker) Swan. She married Arnold Maurer June 20, 1942, in Homer. He preceded her in death June 1, 2004. Mrs. Maurer grew up in Homer, and graduated from Homer High School with the class of 1942. She worked at Union Steel in the receiving department for five years and was an Avon distributor for 20 years. She was a proud member of the President’s Club and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Albion. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, canning fruits and vegetables and really loved gardening flowers. Most of all, she was dedicated to her family, keeping in close contact with everyone, especially her grandchildren, no matter how far away they may be. Mrs. Maurer will be sadly missed by her children, Bruce (Brenda) Maurer of Charlotte, Alvin (Kathleen) Maurer of Mason, Judith (Dale) Hoyt and Rita (Art) Maurer, both of Kendallville, Indiana; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George (Joanne) Swan of Marshall and John (Barbara) Swan of Homer; four sisters, Evelyn McRae, Eleanor (Walt) Benjamin, and Jeanette (Art) Wilkinson, all of Quincy, and Mary (Alden) Tesch of Litchfield. Thomas E. Finnegan Thomas E. Finnegan, 66, of Jonesville, died Sunday, November 13, 2005, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born November 15, 1938, in Detroit, to Fred and Lena (Bryant) Finnegan, and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1956. Mr. Finnegan served six years in the U.S. Navy and retired from Dana Corporation. He had also been a truck driver for American Van Lines and worked at General Cable Co. and Hillsdale Tool & Manufacturing Co. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, he belonged to the Honda Goldwing Association. Mr. Finnegan is survived by two daughters, Deborah Perkins of Battle Creek and Sandi Young of Gulfport, Mississippi; a son, Timothy Finnegan of Coldwater; two sisters, Bernice Moulton of Jonesville and Grace (Ben) Slusher of West Unity, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Troy and Jessica Atkins, Dylan Perkins and George Blanchard. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Barbara Atkins. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 17, at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or charity of one’s choice.
Rex H. Litchard Rex H. Litchard, 82, of Albion, died Friday, November 18, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Litchard was born May 30, 1923, in Three Rivers, to Charles and Eva (Peek) Litchard. He married Yvonne Smith July 3, 1946. She survives. Mr. Litchard served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a tool designer and engineer at Albion Machine and Tool for 20 years. He then worked at Miller Brothers in Homer, retiring in 1985. Mr. Litchard was a skilled silversmith and in the arts of lapidary, woodworking, trapshooting and especially photography. He enjoyed hunting, bowling, traveling and camping. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Kristine Litchard of Homer; two sons, Rick Litchard and Kent (Connie) Litchard, all of Rock; four grandchildren; and several cousins. Funeral services were held Monday, November 21, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens. Rose Ann Clark Rose Ann Clark, 71, of Tekonsha, formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born October 8, 1934, in Jonesville, to Norman and Laura (Minetta) Chawlcraft. She married Loyel Dale Clark in Angola, Indiana, October 8, 1981. He survives. She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of the area. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Clark is survived by two stepsons, Loyel Ray Clark of Fitzgerald, Georgia, and Garritt Lee Clark of Lehigh Acres, Florida; a stepdaughter, Dale Jane (Johnny) Buchan of Fitzgerald, Georgia; and two step grandchildren. Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Hazel Marie Johnson and Florence Mae Enos; and two brothers, Norman and Albert James Chawlcraft. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there are no services planned. Arrangements were entrusted to the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.
Elsie M. Smith Elsie M. Smith, 97, of Homer, died Friday, November 25, 2005, at Marshall Manor. Mrs. Smith was born August 27, 1908, in Butler Township, to Herbert A. and Margaret Jane (Curey) Humphrey. She married Howard H. Smith September 11, 1934. He preceded her in death July 11, 2001. Mrs. Smith taught in rural schools in her early years, then became a homemaker. She was a member of Homer First Presbyterian Church and its Mary Martha Circle, Eastern Star, Homer Bridge Club and was a Cub Scout den mother. Mrs. Smith enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, reading and drawing. She loved spending winters in Florida, was a Michigan State fan, but most of all she loved her family. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Frye of Homer; two sons, Arthur (Karen) Smith of Homer, and David (Barbara) Smith of Tekonsha; a sister-in-law, Frances Humphrey of Chelsea; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Rex and Carl Humphrey; and two sisters, Bessie Smith and Olive Thomas. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 29, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Maggie Jorgensen officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Eliza J. Allen Eliza J. Allen, 80, of Albion, died Thursday, November 24, 2005, at Oaklawn Hospital. Mrs. Allen was born February 3, 1925, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Jack and Elizabeth (Williams) Justice. She married Joe Tackett, who preceded her in death. She married Rondal Allen September 15, 1961. He preceded her in death in 2000. Mrs. Allen was a homemaker all her life. She was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and cooking, and loved spending time with her family. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn (John) Eldridge of Albion and Laura (Glen) Moore of Potterville; six sons, Gene (Joyce) Tackett of Albion, Ed (Zelmaglee) Tackett of Homer and Corlis (Terry) Allen, Terry Allen, Richard (Judy) Allen and Jim (Paula) Allen, all of Albion; 22 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Spencer, three sisters and five brothers. Funeral services were held Monday, November 28, at Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment followed in Albion Memory Gardens. Carl Trall, Jr. Carl Trall, Jr., 73, of Quincy, died Tuesday, November 22, 2005, at the Laurels of Coldwater. He was born August 28, 1932, in Pulaski Township, to Carl and Phebe (Green) Trall. He married Patricia Iles November 6, 1954, and she survives. Mr. Trall graduated from Litchfield High School in 1950, where he played basketball and baseball. For many years he played with the Mosherville ball team and the South Litchfield Baptist Church team in their league. Mr. Trall had been a farmer, worked at Lumber Village in Litchfield, and retired in 1994 from Michigan South Central Power Agency. He had been a member and trustee of the South Litchfield Baptist Church, North Reading Baptist Church, and was currently attending the Litchfield Congregational Church. Mr. Trall loved yard work, flower gardening and helping his neighbors. In addition to his wife of 51 years, Mr. Trall is survived by four nieces, Marcia Trall Neorr of Houghton Lake, Geni Trall Fowler of Manistee, Charon Trall (James) Kill of Union City, Tennessee, and Kathy Trall Dickson of Greenfield, California; two nephews, Douglas (Janeil) Trall of Coldwater and Roger (Mary Jane) Trall of Maui, Hawaii; a sister-in-law, Peggy Trall of Arlington, Virginia; great nieces and nephews; close cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harold, Edward, Roger N. (killed in the Korean Conflict), and a baby brother, James. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Litchfield Congregational Church, with Pastor Michael Murray officiating. Interment followed in the Allen Cemetery. Archie B. Hicks Archie B. Hicks, 74, of Mosherville, died Sunday, November 27, 2005, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born July 17, 1931, in Garret, Kentucky, to Enis and Pokie (Wicker) Hicks, and was the youngest of their 12 children. He married Renda Jordan October 10, 1959, and she survives. Mr. Hicks was a farmer and worked at Paul’s Junkyard in Homer for 20 years. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and worked for the Salvation Army and Gospel Barn for 16 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Lonnie of Ohio; a brother, Lacy Hicks of Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and three brothers. Visitation was held Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Riverside Baptist Church, Homer, with Pastor Jim Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Aura Lee Mestdagh Aura Lee Mestdagh, 75, of Homer, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at Litchfield Nursing Centre. She was born September 3, 1930, in Kinderhook, to Sam and Lula (Loggins) Whitcomb. She married Edward Mestdagh October 20, 1950, and he preceded her in death October 6, 2004. Mrs. Mestdagh was a homemaker. She worked at Felpausch in Albion for a few years and as a waitress at the 115 Truck Stop several years. She was a member of the Homer Bridgette Club and enjoyed crossword puzzles, game shows and most of all her family and grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, Sam (Vicki) Mestdagh and Jamie (Cara) Mestdagh of Homer; a sister, Nina (Vic) Fulton of Fremont; two brothers, Tom (Ernestine) Whitcomb of Greenville, South Carolina, and Robert (Norma) Whitcomb of Bronson; and five grandchildren. Idamae Cares Idamae Cares, 82, of Mosherville, died Tuesday, November 29, 2005, at Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born October 9, 1923, in Detroit, to Harry and Clara (Greenburg) Walters. She married R.T. Cares October 1, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1971. Mrs. Cares worked at Wagner Industries in Reading for many years, retiring in 1981. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Bill) Leffew of Albion; a son, Richard (Vonda) Cares of Jonesville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Wilbur Cares; a grandson, Robert Cares; three brothers; and a sister. Geraldine Mae Sheerer Geraldine Mae Sheerer, 96, lifelong Litchfield area resident, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. She was born May 9, 1909, in Berwick, Pennsylvania, to Elmer and Virgie (McMurtrie) Harris. She had worked at the Homer Foundry, Coldwater Regional Center and raised foster children in her home. She married Alex Benjamin Sheerer May 8, 1926, and he preceded her in death in 1968. Mrs. Sheerer is survived by a daughter, Kitty (Duane) Bills of Litchfield; two sons, George (Dolores) Sheerer of Litchfield, and Jerry (Ruth) Sheerer of Mesick; a son-in-law, John VanWert of Jonesville; 25 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three daughters, Norma VanWert, Joanna Houchen and Carol Jean Fleming; two brothers; and a sister. Hope L. Hepler Hope L. Hepler, 86, of Homer, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at Tendercare in Marshall. She was born March 17, 1919, in Grand Rapids, to Clarence and Thanet “Alta” (Dailey) Finley. She married Russell Hepler October 10, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. Hepler was a homemaker all her life. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Homer, where she served on Session, as Treasurer and in the Mary Martha Circle. She was a member of Homer Senior Citizens, a former Cub Scout leader and enjoyed reading, sewing and bird watching. She is survived by two daughters, Marjorie VanHeerde of Marshall and Joyce (Dennis) Miller of Battle Creek; a son, Raymond (Yon) Hepler of Homer; four sisters, Phyllis Daniels of Coldwater, Peggy Trall of Alexandria, Virginia, Arva Wallace of Albion and Nancy Bigelow of Valdosta, Georgia; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three stepbrothers and a granddaughter, Melissa. Irene B. Fouts Irene B. Fouts, 84, of Albion, died Saturday, December 3, 2005, at Tendercare of Albion. She was born August 19, 1921, in Homer, to Dean and Alletta (Truax) Skinner. She married Neville A. Fouts October 17, 1938, in New Lexington, Ohio. He preceded her in death on April 14, 1988. Mrs. Fouts lived in the Calhoun County area most of her life. She was a nurse’s aide at Sheldon Memorial Hospital before going to school in Battle Creek to receive her L.P.N. degree. After that she worked as a nurse before retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ. She was an avid golfer, and very active in community activities. She worked and formerly was head of the volunteers at the hospital. She was also former president of the Albion City Bowling Association for many years and had the nickname of “Kingpin”. Mrs. Fouts is survived by a son, Gary (Helena) Fouts of Marshall; four daughters, Pat (Wesley) Schmidt of Albion, Sandra (Fred) Good of Eaton Rapids, Donna Fouts of Albion and Carol Fouts of Coconut Creek, Florida; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne; a daughter, Tamera Lee; a granddaughter, Nicole Burmeister; a sister, Martha Folts; and a brother, Chester Skinner. Visitation was held at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels Tuesday, December 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. and will also be today (Wednesday) from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Norma Jean VanVlerah Norma Jean VanVlerah, 78, longtime Litchfield resident, died Monday, December 12, 2005, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. She was born April 2, 1927, in Defiance, Ohio, to Benjamin and Martha (Griffith) Kennedy and graduated from Defiance High School. She married Merle E. VanVlerah November 4, 1946, and he preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. VanVlerah had been employed as an aide at Litchfield Community Schools. She is survived by a daughter, Jean (Paul) Schwind of Cheboygan; two sons, Mike (Tina) VanVlerah of Ada, and Gary (Victoria) VanVlerah of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Amy Jo McNett, Sherri (Karl) Friedenstab, Andrew (Kitt) VanVlerah, and Gregory (Elena) Trumper; a step-grandchild, Amy (Kevin) O’Neill; and six great-grandchildren, Jaron McNett, Haley Mazur, Emily VanVlerah, Marissa McNett, Justine Friedenstab and Lindsey Friedenstab. Zelleree Dillion Zelleree Dillion, 71, of Homer, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. She was born April 22, 1934, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Millard and Mary (Holbrook) Sparks. She married Charles Dillion November 26, 1949, and he preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Dillion lived most of her life in the Homer area and was an assembler at Aeroquip in Spring Arbor for 27 years until retiring in 1993. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and quilting. Mrs. Dillion is survived by three daughters, Donna (Joe) Spencer of Dixon, Kentucky, Charity French of Angola, Indiana, and Evelyn (Mohammad) Raza of Quincy; four sons, Ronnie (Elaine) Dillion, Millard Lee Dillion, Charles Dillion, Jr., and Ricky Dillion, all of Homer; a sister, Jane Prater of Tekonsha; a brother, Albert “Red” Sparks of Homer; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dillion was preceded in death by a sister, Guree Prater; and brothers Abe and Floyd Sparks. A funeral service was held Friday, December 16, at J. Virginia Ileene Bates Virginia Ileene Bates, 80, of Marseilles, Illinois, formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at Morris Hospital. She was born October 22, 1925, in Ottawa, to Truman and Wilhelmina (Slater) Alexander. She married Francis Bates of Homer in 1965, and he preceded her in death in 1998. Mrs. Bates was a member of Lyon Lake Methodist Church in Marshall. She and her husband owned and operated a mink ranch in Homer for many years. She is survived by three stepdaughters, Rosemary (Richard) Berry of Homer, Emily (Christopher) Baker of Marshall, and Patricia (Michael) LaVergne of Union City; four stepsons, Thom-as (Mary) Bates of Homer, Donald Bates of Georgia, Bernard (Karen) Bates of Homer and Dennis Bates of Homer; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Carla Shaver of Marseilles, Alan Hicks of Ottawa and Alex Hicks of Seneca. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Hicks; a brother, Grover Broadus; and a niece, Carole Miller. Graveside services will be held at a later date in West Eckford Cemetery in Homer. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were handled by Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles. Irene LaVern Hoyt Irene LaVern Hoyt, 73, of Homer, died Sunday, December 18, 2005, at Tendercare in Marshall. She was born July 15, 1932, in Homer, to Thomas W. and Lilah (Wendorf) Rockwell. She married Bert R. Hoyt in 1954, and he preceded her in death in 1974. Mrs. Hoyt was a homemaker and enjoyed her grandchildren. She also enjoyed puzzles and watching TV. She is survived by a daughter, May Hoyt (Steve LaForce) of Battle Creek; two sons, Lione (Mary) Hoyt of Homer, and Terry (Donna) Hoyt of Lexington, Kentucky; a brother, Gerald (Kay) Rockwell of Homer; a niece, Karen Lindzy; several nephews; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Bernadine Rockwell and Belle Lindzy; and two brothers, Louis and Duane Rockwell. Randa S. Kramer Randa S. Kramer, 56, of Homer, died Thursday, December 22, 2005, at her residence. She was born May 7, 1949, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Claude and Pearl (Bartley) Hall. She married Richard A. Kramer Sr. June 21, 1968, in Homer. He survives. Mrs. Kramer was a resident of the area for most of her life. Her children and grandchildren were her hobby. She enjoyed shopping and golfing. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Richard (Kristin) Kramer Jr. and Brian Kramer, both of Homer; a daughter, Nicole Sullivan of Indian River; three grandchildren, Anthony and Jalynn Kramer and Tylor Swafford; her mother, Pearl Hall of Homer; two sisters, Janetta Hall and Sharon Ashby; and five brothers, Tony, Tommy, Ricky, Rocky and Dottie Hall. Mrs. Kramer was preceded in death by her father, Claude Hall, and a brother, Donnie Hall. Visitation was held Monday, December 26, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.
