Delta R. Vincent Delta R. Vincent, 85, of Homer, died Saturday, December 22, 2007, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Vincent was born September 26, 1922, in Alger, Ohio, to Earl and Chloe (Pratt) Huston. She came to Homer the day after graduation. She graduated from Cleary College in Ypsilanti in 1942, and worked at Hoover Ball & Bearing in Ann Arbor. She later worked for Civil Service at Willow Run and Ford Motor Company, before returning to Homer. Mrs. Vincent worked two years at Calhoun State Bank before getting married September 12, 1948, to Harold “Stub” Vincent. He preceded her in death May 27, 2004. Mrs. Vincent was a progressive homemaker. She went back to work part-time in 1959, then full-time in 1966, retiring as head teller from City Bank & Trust. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Homer, where she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Stella Chapter and was treasurer of the Temple board. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, watching birds and sports with her family. Survivors include two daughters, Dana (Joseph) Jezowski of Marshall and Dawn (Jeffery) Klann of Oregon; two sons, Dale (Sharla) Vincent of Tekonsha and Dean (Susan) Vincent of Homer; a sister, Rachel (Howard) Huffman of Homer; a brother-in-law, Ralph Klein of Davisburg; 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosemary Yates and Eda Klein. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 29, at First Presbyterian Church in Homer, with the Rev. Nancy Carle officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Lizzie Jane Owens Lizzie Jane Owens, 68, of Union City, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at her residence. She was born September 28, 1939, in Teaberry, Kentucky, to Edward and Artie Hamilton. She was married to Chester Kaminski, Robert Dines and Luther Owens who all preceded her in death. Mrs. Owens was formerly employed at Corning Glass of Albion. She also worked as a nurses’ aide at Marshall Manor, from where she retired in 1978. She was a member of Southern United United Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Patricia (Earl) Johnson, Teresa Shaw and Lori (Carl) Johnson; four sons, Steven (Debbie) Baccus, Richard Kaminski, Edward Keeling and Ronald Kaminski; an aunt, Gracie Patterson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Willie, Omer and Lonnie. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Erie Street Chapel of J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services will be Thursday, at 11 a.m. at the Erie Street Chapel, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Albion Memory Gardens Cemetery. Gordon L. Pahl Gordon L. Pahl, 65, of Albion, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at his home. Mr. Pahl was born May 28, 1942, in Albion, to Leonard and Mina (Enos) Pahl. He graduated from high school in Albion and went on to earn his associates degree of business. He worked for Miller Jewelers of Albion until 1973, when he became self-employed as owner of G. Pahl, Jeweler, Ltd., which he owned until 2000. He started a photography studio, G. Pahl, Photographer, Inc., in 1996, which he owned until his death. He was very involved in the civic activities of Albion, holding many offices in the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Development Authority and Albion-Homer United Way. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, was a Sunday School superintendent and radio broadcast announcer/producer for more than 30 years. He was a former officer of the Albion Historical Society, former president of Albion Public Library’s board of trustees, and one-time president of Exchange Club of Albion. He was a volunteer driver for Albion Area Ambulance Service and fund-raising chairman. He received Albion College’s 1995 Community Recognition Salute for contributions to Albion’s economic development, and the 1993 Small Business of the Year award by greater Albion Chamber of Commerce, among other awards too numerous to mention. He was a member of the International Freelance Photographers’ Organization and Michigan Retailers’ Association. He had a great love of the Colorado Mountains, and was also a member of the Michigan United Conservationist Clubs. Survivors include an honorary son, Daniel (Sue) Swathwood of Louisville, Colorado; two honorary grandchildren, Karen Swathwood of Arvada, Colorado, and Chris Swathwood of Aspen Park, Colorado; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Monday, December 31, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Justin Heap, Daniel Swathwood and Ed Berg officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Albion Community Foundation, Downtown Development Fund or Albion Historical Society.

Elaine L. Ralston Elaine L. Ralston, 82, of Homer, died Sunday, December 23, 2007, at her home. She was born May 9, 1925, to Howard and Frieda (Rutz) Cortwright. She married Theron Ralston in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Ralston, along with her husband, owned and operated a guest house in Homer for many years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion and a former member of the Homer Village Council. Survivors include a brother, William Cortright of Homer, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ralston was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Cortright. A memorial luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the VFW hall in Homer. Johnie Lee Pratt Johnie Lee Pratt, 69, of Jackson, and formerly of Homer, died Sunday, December 30, 2007, at Countryside Care Center in Jackson. Mr. Pratt was born June 15, 1938, in Pinetop, Kentucky, to Girvin and Myrtle (Slone) Pratt. He married Marjorie Huver in 1976. She preceded him in death in 1997. Mr. Pratt worked in commercial construction and lived most of his life in Seattle, Washington. He owned several taverns in Seattle and Bozeman, Montana. He also owned a used car lot in Seattle. Mr. Pratt moved back to Michigan in 1988. He enjoyed going to garage sales and flea markets, playing cards and pool. He especially enjoyed cooking. Survivors include five daughters, Jacque Long of Seattle, Maryellen Jackson of Wilmington, North Carolina, Terrie Racca of Gig Harbor, Washington, Robin Clough of Issaquah, Washington, and Peggy Roberts of Allen, Washington; two sons, Joseph Pratt of Homer and James Pratt of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; a life friend and companion, Bernice Hackworth of Jackson; four sisters, Wanda (Richard) Goble of Albion, Monnie (Clois) Hackworth of Homer, Evelyn Sturgill and Marie Rewa, both of Marshall; five brothers, Edgar (Sammie) Pratt of Homer, Irvin Pratt and Clyde (Barb) Pratt, all of Marshall, Wayne (Frona) Pratt of Sturgis, and Mirle Pratt of Naples, Florida; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Pratt was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanie; a sister, Mae Sparks, and a brother, Sam. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 2, at J. Michael D. Hewitt Michael D. Hewitt, 61, of Marshall, formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Lifespan Hospice Residence. He was born December 5, 1946, in Petoskey, to Virgil and Margaret (Hammontree) Hewitt. He married Kathleen S. Anderson Wirebaugh in Loveland, Colorado in August of 1987. She survives. Mr. Hewitt lived the majority of his life in Homer and moved to Marshall in 2004. He was a 1965 graduate of Homer High School, and after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and served in Thailand. He started his career with the Michigan Air National Guard in the early 1970s. He later left the air guard for three years to serve in the Army National Guard. He later returned to the air guard where served at their base in Battle Creek until his retirement as a Master Sergeant with the Civil Engineers in December 2006. He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and hunting in his spare time, and was a “true blue” avid University of Michigan fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kim (Charles) Ruge and Teri (Roger) Rathbun, both of Coldwater; a grandson, Cameron Brock Ruge; two stepsons, Todd Wirebaugh of Freemont, Indiana, and Derrick (Marcy) Wirebaugh of Homer; six step-grandchildren; his mother, Margaret Hewitt-Caroline of Boyne City; two brothers, Roger Hewitt of Boyne City and Jimmy (Kathy) Hewitt of Florida; a sister, Gail (Dan) Reeve of Hanover; a half brother, John Fleming of Gaylord; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a baby brother, Danny. A memorial service was held at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home Monday, with Chaplain James Codde officiating. Interment followed in Ft. Wanda L. McCoy-Oliver Wanda L. McCoy-Oliver, 57, of Albion, died Thursday, January 3, 2008, at her home. She was born July 10, 1950, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Adolph and Frances Faye (Blackburn) Collins. She married Floyd Oliver July 10, 1999, and he survives. Mrs. Oliver was a homemaker and worked for Team One Plastics for a few years. She enjoyed reading her Bible and raising her family. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Tracy McCoy of Homer; two sons, Larry Todd McCoy of Albion and Scott (Wendy) McCoy of Dearborn Heights; a godson, Tommy Owens of Albion; a sister, Linda Lair of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania; seven special sisters, Debbie Samons, Julia Hanks, Sonny Jones, Jean Reese, Lori Langston and Eva Wright, all of Albion, and Marty Wilbur of Kalamazoo; a brother, Stephen Collins of Saginaw; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather, Benjamin Moles; and a stepmother, Shauna Moles. A memorial service was held Monday, at Grace Freewill Baptist Church, in Albion, with the Rev. Donna B. McCullough and Patricia J. Hammond Donna B. (Holibaugh) Behling McCullough, 80, and her daughter, Patricia J. Behling Hammond, 58, both of Litchfield, died Saturday, January 5, 2008, in Clarendon Township as the result of an auto accident. Mrs. McCullough was born March 2, 1927, to Lyle and Mary Maude (Cobb) Holibaugh in Jackson. She married Edward A. Behling May 29, 1947, in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death December 23, 1977. She married Earl P. McCullough October 21, 1979, in Harrietta. He preceded her in death February 1, 1997. Mrs. McCullough lived in Ohio and Marshall from 1953-1978, before moving to Homer. She attended Albion schools growing up. She moved to Litchfield in 1989. She retired from Albion Community Hospital, where she was part of the housekeeping team. She also worked as part of the serving staff in Albion, Jackson and Marshall area restaurants. She was a member of AARP, and was a past member of the Albion Women of the Moose. She enjoyed fishing and watching dirt track stock car races. Her greatest joy in life was family and the time spent with them. Wherever she lived, the neighborhood children would call her Grandma. Survivors include a daughter, Susan K. (David) Richardson of Grand Blanc; two sons, Kenneth R. (Connie) Behling of Coldwater and James E. (Caroline) Behling of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepdaughters; a sister, Florence Cole of Riverside, California; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward E. Behling in 1954; two brothers, Lester E. and Harold L. Holibaugh; and her parents. Mrs. Hammond was born April 22, 1948, in Albion, to Edward and Donna (Holibaugh) Behling. She married Frank Hammond Jr. April 13, 1968. He preceded her in death December 30, 1993. She attended Marshall Public Schools and graduated from Marshall High School in 1967. Before moving to Litchfield in 1994, she lived in Bellevue. She worked at Evergreen Manor in Battle Creek as a ward clerk and in medical records. She was part of the serving staff in area restaurants and did childcare work prior to that. She enjoyed taking photos of stock car racing with her husband at Butler Motor Speedway, where they were both track photographers for several years. Mrs. Hammond enjoyed a special relationship together. They lived next door to each other for many years and enjoyed having meals and shopping excursions together. Patricia is survived by two sons Frank E. (Missy) Hammond and Michael E. (Mary) Hammond, both of Reading; two grandchildren, Jennie and Josh; a sister, Susan K. (Dave) Richardson; and two brothers, Kenneth (Connie) Behling and James (Carolyn) Behling. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Edward. A joint visitation was held Tuesday, from 2 p.m.- 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Craig K. Kempf Funeral home. A joint funeral service will be held today (Wednesday) at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral Home, in Marshall, with Pastor Doug Hammond officiating. A reception will follow at the Marshall Moose Lodge #676. Iris J. McMaster Iris J. McMaster, 78, of Litchfield, and formerly of Toledo, Ohio, and Reading, died Sunday, December 30, 2007, at home. Mrs. McMaster was born October 20, 1929, in Toledo, to Howard and Mildred (Radsick) Willey. She graduated from Scott High School in Toledo and retired in 1978 from American Motors/Chrysler Corp. of Toledo. She married Lloyd McMaster in 1956. He preceded her in death in 1994. After moving to Michigan, Mrs. McMaster enjoyed preparing taxes and operating Lakeview Antiques in Allen. She enjoyed making hand crafts, her rose gardens and her pets. Survivors include a daughter, Lynda McMaster of Ann Arbor; a sister, Joyce Rizzo of Maumee, Ohio; two brothers, Larry (Patricia) Willey of Goose Creek, South Carolina, and Kenneth (Delores) Zeigler of Toledo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McMaster was preceded in death by a daughter, Lora McMaster in 2006. Ora L. O’Dell Ora L. O’Dell, 66, of Homer, died Monday, January 7, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born August 6, 1941, in Clarendon Township, to Louis Harold “Bill” and Eva (Averill) O’Dell. They survive in Homer. He married Delores Jean “Dee” Bradley September 3, 1968, and she survives. Mr. O’Dell served his country in the U.S. Air Force in Guam. He worked in the maintenance department at Calhoun Foundry for 32 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Marshall; VFW #3672, Albion post; and was a current Clarendon Township trustee, and had been for more than 10 years. He bowled in leagues in Homer, Jackson, Albion and Marshall, and was a member of the Homer Bowling Association for many years. He also enjoyed computers and games of chance. In addition to his parents and wife, survivors include two sons, Darian (Ruth) O’Dell of Homer and Corey O’Dell of Battle Creek; a sister, Nancy (Harry) Griffiths of Litchfield; a brother, Harold Wayne (Becky) O’Dell of Homer; and two grandchildren, Ben and Jessy O’Dell, both of Homer. Funeral services were held Friday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Steven Shafe officiating. Interment followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Bill Hammontree Bill Hammontree, 80, of Petoskey and Boyne City, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey. He was born December 27, 1927, in Petoskey, to Leon and Inez (Hoxie) Hammontree. Mr. Hammontree attended school in Petoskey until joining the United States Army during World War II, as well as the Army National Guard with the highest rank obtained as Sergeant First Class. He and his wife then relocated to Homer where he was employed with the Department of Corrections until retiring. He then went to work for Starr Commonwealth for Boys in Albion, where his health eventually forced him to stop working. He relocated to Boyne City and made it his permanent residence. He had a unique musical ear, which allowed him to play any musical instrument despite not being able to read a note of music. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and seeker of the infamous morel mushroom. He was a fair and strict disciplinarian to his four sons. Survivors include three sons, Donald “Gary,” Mark and Lorne Hammontree; and five grandchildren, Trevor, Tracie, Amber, Brittany and Brianna. Preceding him in death was a son, Dale. Funeral services were held Friday at the Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey, with the Rev. Mark Bullock officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.
Theodore “Ted” Allen Coe Theodore Allen “Ted” Coe, 64, of Jonesville, died Thursday, January 10, 2008, at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He was born June 20, 1943, in Ypsilanti, to Kenneth and Ada (Caroen) Coe. They survive in Litchfield. Mr. Coe graduated from Camden-Frontier High School in 1962. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the National Air Defense as a radar specialist at Norfolk, Virginia. He retired from Vaco/Klein Tool, where he worked for 32 years as a set-up man on the broaches. In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Sharleen (Leo) Barr and a nephew, Tyson Barr, all of Litchfield; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Monday, at the Litchfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Geri Litchfield officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, in Litchfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to the contributors’ favorite charity. Arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.
John Ross Draper John Ross Draper, 78, died Saturday, January 12, 2008. He was born in Kalamazoo to Warren and Margaret (Southfield) Draper. Mr. Draper was a graduate of Western Michigan University. He was elected to Kappa Rho Sigma (honorary science fraternity) and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He spent most of his years in the pulp and paper industry and was employed with Union Bag/Camp and Consolidated Paper Co., and retired from Sonoco Products Co. He finished his career as an industrial consultant for the South Carolina Technical Schools. He was a past member of the Rotary and past chairman of the Board of Trustees for Florence-Darlington Technical College. Survivors include his wife, Joan Battle Draper of Hartsville, South Carolina; two daughters, Carol Mozingo and Janet (Ray) Alexander, both of Hartsville; a brother, Robert “Sam” Draper of Litchfield; four grandchildren, Laura (Sam) Privette, Jeremiah John Mozingo, Lisa Alexander and Katherine “Katie” Mozingo; and special friends, James Peterson and Sylvia and Antonio Robles. Funeral services were held Sunday at Magnolia Cemetery, with Father Karl Roesch officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to Pulmonary Fibrosis, 1332 N. Tyler Delayne Carlisle Tyler Delayne Carlisle, infant son of Matthew D. and Charlotte A. (Laws) Carlisle of Butler Township, was stillborn Sunday, January 20, 2008, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. In addition to his father, he is survived by grandparents Kim (Ron) Carlisle of Quincy and Daniel (Sandra) Laws of Hillsdale; great-grandparents Glenn (Sharon) Carlisle of Jonesville, Jane Dunn of Quincy, Melba Irelan of Tecumseh and Louise Hill of Adrian; and many aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Milford “Joel” Dunn, Charles O. Irelan and Calvin Laws. A private graveside service will be held, with Pastor Don Harkey officiating. Memorial contributions have been suggested to a fund at the Hillsdale County National Bank, set up for the purchase of a headstone. Dowayne J. Brigham Dowayne J. Brigham, 83, of Litchfield, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, at his home. Mr. Brigham was born March 4, 1924, in Parma, to William and Evelenna (Rowlison) Brigham. He graduated from Parma High School, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Donamae Gilmore in 1943. She preceded him in death in 1999. Mr. Brigham returned home to farm following the war, which he continued for the rest of his life. He was an avid bowler and treasured the friends he made over the years at the bowling alley. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards and reading. Survivors include three sons, Don (Connie) Brigham, Dennis Brigham and David (Michelle) Brigham, all of Litchfield; a daughter, Dona Michelle “Shelle” Brigham of Parma; two grandchildren, Ulricke (Derin) McCone and Elisha Brigham; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Hank (Ruth) Brigham of Scottsville; and three sisters, Phyllis Winters of Albion, and Billie (Harry) Hanes and Ardith (Kenny) Sprague, both of Concord. He was preceded in death by three brothers Elwin “Stub”, Jack and Virgil Brigham; a sister, Jean, and his beloved dog Lacey. Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. A celebration of Mr. Brigham’s life will be held Saturday, February 2, at 1 p.m. at Litchfield United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Carl Litchfield and Clyde Wonders officiating. Mary Jo (Holtz) Buckley Warson Mary Jo (Holtz) Buckley Warson, 88, of Albion, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Emerald Forest Assisted Living. She was born March 15, 1919, to Richard E. and Edna (Watson) Holtz. She married Lt. Colonel Earl R. Buckley, Jr., of Jackson, in 1943. He preceded her in death in 1959. She later married Kenneth L. Warson of Albion, to whom she was married 31 years. He preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Warson graduated from Jackson High School and attended Meredith College for Women in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Western Michigan University. She enjoyed spending time up north with her husband, Kenny, at their cottage in Munising and their winters at Piney Point in Palmetto, Florida. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge and visiting with friends and family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, ELT Club and Duck Lake Country Club. She was well traveled and especially cherished her time spent in Japan. She is survived by her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Barbara Warson, Sam Markovich and Keith and Jane Waito, all of Albion; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Beatrice Holtz Naylor of Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will be held Saturday, at First United Methodist Church, in Albion, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dwayne Bagley officiating. Cremation has taken place at her request. Violet Marie Hilliker Violet Marie Hilliker, 72, of Battle Creek, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at The Manor of Battle Creek. She was born April 18, 1935, in Dexter, to Vern L. and Minnie M. (Sawyer) Hilliker. Vera I. Hall Vera L. Hall, 70, of Homer, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Hall was born August 22, 1937, in Albion, to Lloyd and Helen (Hartung) McMillen. She married Wayne Eugene Hall December 1, 1956. He survives. Mrs. Hall was a homemaker, and also worked at J.C. Penney in Albion and Central Appliance in Battle Creek. She enjoyed sewing, painting ceramics, art shows on television, and games of chance. She also enjoyed traveling out west, her home in the Upper Peninsula, making holiday dinners, and especially her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Kathy Hall of Homer; two sons, David (Teresa) Hall of Homer, and Duane (Sue) Hall of Litchfield; a sister, Donna Kelly of New Mexico; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. John Paul “Palky” Nemore Sr. John Paul “Palky” Nemore Sr., 42, of Homer, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, in Litchfield. He was born February 24, 1965, in Detroit, to Jessie E. and Mary Jane (Mullins) Nemore. His father survives in Homer. Mr. Nemore married Faye Anne Good October 7, 1996, in Battle Creek. She survives. He was a resident of the area most of his life. He was a welder at Yukon Manufacturing of Litchfield, Midwest Foundry and Springport Steel, and was a former member of the Southern Baptist Church of Albion. In addition to his wife and father, survivors include five daughters, Yolanda Nemore of Homer, Sunnymae Nemore of Burlington, Rose (Bill) Sailor of Sturgis, Shanna Maggard of Litchfield and Destiny Berenger of Sturgis; a son, John Paul Nemore Jr. of Albion; 10 grandchildren; five sisters, Essie Johnson and Shirley Moore, both of Howe, Indiana, Brenda Little of Melvin, Kentucky, Susie Roberts of Marshall, and Thelma Hall of Bensville, Kentucky; two brothers, Gary Little of Melvin Kentucky and Larry Little of Detroit; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother on February 26, 2004; a son, Jared Maggard; a daughter, Trista Diane Maggard; and two grandsons, Richard Tullas II and Jessie James Rose. Charles Herbert “Bob” Young Charles Herbert “Bob” Young, 89, died Sunday, January 27, 2008, with his family by his side. He was born June 18, 1918, on a farm near Parma, and was one of nine children born to James and Anna (Radtke) Young. Mr. Young married Verl Marsh June 21, 1941. She preceded him in death. He entered the Army when World War II broke out and proudly served his country for five years, participating in the Normandy Invasion. He was discharged in 1945. Mr. Young (known to many as Spyder) was always a hard worker. As a young boy he would sometimes have two paper routes and later worked at Mitchell’s Confectionary in Albion. Coming from a large family, the children all helped pay for their own clothing. While in high school, he landed a part-time job with Blaisdell’s Clothing Store on Superior Street in Albion, where he found his niche. After graduating from high school in 1938, he worked full-time for Blaisdell’s. He bought one-half interest in the company in 1950 and the remaining share in 1955. He was in business on the main street in Albion for 69 years, first with Blaisdell’s, then as Young’s Men’s Wear and later as Young’s Apparel. A heart attack forced his retirement in 2005 and the store closed. He was truly grateful to the many people that worked for and with him to keep the business going, including his wife, who spent many years helping with the business. Mr. Young continued his Army buddy friendships the rest of his life. He and his lifelong friends from Albion enjoyed hunting (he was the cook), fishing and golfing together at Duck Lake, where he was an active member for many years. He also loved auto racing and attended the Indy 500 for 47 years beginning in 1937, and only missing the races that were cancelled from 1942-1945 due to WWII. Community involvement was a big part of his life. He was proud to serve on the Chemical Bank Board and remained active for many years in the Albion Chamber of Commerce, Exchange Club, VFW, Leisure Hour Club, Elks, Jaycees, United Way, Michigan Retailers, The American Legion and the Masons. He supported the youth of Albion with contributions to many sports teams and service clubs. He was especially proud of his military service, and was thrilled to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. with four generations of his family. He lived comfortably at Masonic Pathways in Alma the past year-and-a-half. He really enjoyed receiving letters and visits from family and friends and artistic drawings from his great-grandchildren. His infectious smile and optimistic spirit will remain with and be missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include four daughters, Marsha (David) Whitestone of Traverse City, Merrily Boertmann of Brighton, and Cynthia Taber and Julie (Tim) Peace, both of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Barry (Debbie) Young of Champaign, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Hagemann and Elaine Schultz; a brother, Jim Young; a brother-in-law, Wilbur Jr. (Kay) Marsh; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Whitehead. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ben and Dick; and three sisters, Elsie Watson, Evelyn Hartung and Caroline Stumpf. A service celebrating his life was held Saturday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with his great-nephew Jason Engle officiating. Douglas Lynn Fisher Douglas Lynn Fisher, 51, of Coldwater, formerly of Homer, died Monday, January 28, 2008, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He was born December 24, 1956, in Albion, to Roy and Alice (Walters) Fisher. Mr. Fisher served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked for Semon Painting Contractors as a commercial painter, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include a daughter, Brandi Fisher of Muskegon; three brothers, Clyde Fisher of Bay City, Robert Fisher of Saginaw and David Fisher of Homer; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margo; and two brothers, Robin and Gaylord Fisher. A graveside service will be held and announced at a later date. There will be no visitation. Mary Wendorf Mary Wendorf, 70, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Mrs. Wendorf was born November 16, 1936, in Moscow, to Ellis and Esther (Miller) Brazee. She worked at the Vermontville Hardware Store and was a member of Gresham United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wendorf enjoyed knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking and talking to friends on the phone. She loved spending time with her family, especially at family get-togethers. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Dale; four sons, Steven (Sherry) Wendorf of Charlotte, David (Brenda) Wendorf of Vermontville, Gregory (Chris) Wendorf of Nashville and Harold (Dawn) Wendorf of Charlotte; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry (Evelyn) Brazee and Harold (Rosalie) Brazee; a sister, Donna (Larry) Bowser; two stepbrothers, Jim Wood and Norm Wood, and a stepsister, Judy Wood. Ruth L. Jones Ruth L. Jones, 72, of Foley, Alabama, formerly of Albion, died Thursday, January 31, 2008, at the Mobile Infirmary in Mobile, Alabama. Mrs. Jones was born June 25, 1935, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to Evert and Opal G. (Hunter) Wiley. She married Orvel Dover Jones in Albion June 1, 1954. He preceded her in death April 18, 2007. She had moved to Foley in 1989 after residing in Albion and Detroit. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, Susan (Kevin) Profitt of Saginaw and Candace Oppenheimer of Foley; two sons, David (Gloria) Jones of Wichita, Kansas, and Orvel (Rebecca) Jones Jr. of Brownstown Township; five grandchildren, Lauren Jones, David Jones, Jennifer Profitt, Audra Oppenheimer and Benjamin Jones; two brothers, David (Linda) Wiley of Alpena and Larry (Patty) Wiley of Grayling; and three sisters, Lorraine (Jimmy) Patrick of Mt. Helen E. Innis Helen E. Innis, 85, of Litchfield, died Saturday, February 2, 2008, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility. Mrs. Innis was born December 14, 1922, in Atrim County, to Claude and Ethel (Pierce) Wellman. She married Ralph Innis January 19, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 2005. Together they raised many foster children. She graduated from Bellaire High School and had been employed at Simpson Industries at one time. She worked at the Litchfield District Library for more than 30 years, and served on the library board. She attended First Baptist Church in Litchfield and was active in the children’s programs and missionary work. She was also a charter member of the Litchfield Belles Extension Club. In 1976, Mrs. Innis was honored with Litchfield’s “Woman of the Year” award. Mrs. Innis is survived by five daughters, LuluBelle (Bill) Hollstein, Pat (Moises) Silva and Arla Leininger, all of Litchfield, Pat (Norman) Brandeberry of Pittsford and Rose (Richard) Abbeg of Quincy; two sons, Louis (Phyllis) Vincent of Litchfield and Terry (Debra) Innis of Irvine, California; 22 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Innis was preceded in death by a brother. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Litchfield First Baptist Church, with Pastor Brent Stille officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Jeanette M. McCorkle Jeanette M. McCorkle, 65, of Portage, formerly of Homer and Concord, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. She was born August 8, 1942, in Albion, to Donald and Marie (Fogg) Butler. Her mother survives in Homer. She married Duane McCorkle August 21, 1961. He preceded her in death. Mrs. McCorkle was a graduate of Homer High School. She lived in Texas for 10 years after leaving the area, and was in Portage for the last four years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking and crafts. She also enjoyed playing bingo and cards. She especially enjoyed having coffee with her friends. Survivors include a son, David (Janice) McCorkle of Portage; a sister Sandy (Ken) Kubaczyk of Sherwood; three brothers, James (Janice) Butler and Randy Butler, both of Homer, and Lyndol Butler of Flushing; and two grandchildren. Ernest “Perry” Skelt Ernest “Perry” Skelt, 85, of Litchfield died Monday, February 4, 2008, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. Mr. Skelt was born November 21, 1922, in Ypsilanti, to Ernest P. and Margaret Skelt. He married Wyona Mobus March 4, 1945. She preceded him in death in 2003. After graduating from high school in 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II, and received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant during the landing at Peleiu. Later, as an engineer, he built bridges and roads in preparation for the invasion of Guadalcanal. He served in the Korean War in the battle of Chosin Reservoir, becoming one of the “Chosin Few.” He later served in Japan and Okinawa, and was an instructor at the Marine Corps School in Quantico, Virginia. Mr. Skelt was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star. He retired as a major in 1960. Upon his return to Michigan in 1961, he owned and operated Perry’s Dairy for many years. He also retired from Addison Products after 25 years, and was a self-employed contractor. He belonged to the American Legion, Litchfield Historical Society, Litchfield Planning Commission and was a volunteer grandpa at Litchfield Community Schools. Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Charles) Little of Lexington, South Carolina, and Bonnie (Gary) Adams of Litchfield; four grandchildren James (Angela) Adams of Madison Heights, Megan (Timothy) Kempter of Litchfield, Daniel Little of Charleston, South Carolina, and Sara Little of Washington D.C.; and two great-grandsons, Ryan Kempter and Cameron Adams. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Eleanor Bloom, and a brother, John Skelt. At his request, there will be no visitation or service. Doris E. (Miller) Kirkbride Doris E. (Miller) Kirkbride, 87, of Homer, formerly of Albion, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Kirkbride was born September 3, 1920, in Hillsdale, to Ralph C. and Jennie Ethel (Dye) Miller. She married Kenneth Kirkbride December 31, 1941, in Albion. He preceded her in death June 23, 1994. She had been a resident of Homer for the past two years. She was a cashier at the Kroger Store in Battle Creek for more than 30 years. She especially loved to go fishing. She is survived by two sisters, Lois (Darrell) Farmer of Albion and Jeanne (John) Sandusky of Grand Ledge; nine nieces and nephews, Lori (Cale) Warner of Homer, Charles (Teri) Patterson of Colorado, Douglas Patterson, Jerry Patterson, Chris Farmer and Kent (Tami) Farmer, all of Albion, Scott (Denise) Farmer of Springport, and Jan Miller and Jeffrey (Cathy) Miller, both of Jackson; and several great-nieces and great-nephews In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kirkbride was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Miller; a sister, Norma Clark; and a nephew, Greg Patterson. Wallace E. Lons Wallace E. Lons, 91, of Homer, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at Tendercare in Marshall. Mr. Lons was born January 20, 1917, in Horton, to John and Lydia (Hoover) Lons. He married Vida J. Bronson September 6, 1936. She preceded him in death December 10, 1984. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe, the Philippines, and then with the Occupation Army’s Medical Corps in Japan. Mr. Lons was a life resident of the Homer area. He worked for Service Caster in Albion in 1936, Lonergan’s in 1938 and Union Steel Products in 1942, where he worked for 38 years, retiring in 1982. He greatly enjoyed woodworking. Mr. Lons is survived by two sons, Calvin W. (Judy) Lons of Hanover and Butch E. (Pat) Lons of Homer; a sister, Pauline Selask of Albion; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Lons was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Burdette, Joyce and Cynthia; and five brothers, Seymore, Leland, Burkeley, Calvin and Clair. James F. Robinson James F. Robinson, 78, died Monday, February, 18, 2008, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Robinson was born April 8, 1929, in Mt. Clemens, to Fred and Violet Robinson. He married Esther Wendorf September 3, 1955, and she survives. Mr. Robinson served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War. He worked for 25 years at Jackson Prison as a corrections officer, before retiring. He had also worked for Calhoun Foundry, Simpsons, and Trojan Heat Treat. He enjoyed hunting and traveling, and was a U of M fan. He especially enjoyed his children and sports. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Deborah (Jimmy) Gordon of Battle Creek, Virginia Robinson (Steve Bender) of Quincy and Jennifer (Steve) Wilson of Homer; five sons, Ron (Marie) Robinson of New Mexico, Richard (Sue) Robinson of Albion, Bruce Robinson (Paula Bethel) and Brad Robinson (Tami Watson), both of Homer, and Brian (Laurie) Robinson of Burlington; 26 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Zella Marie Cook Zella Marie Cook, 99, of Litchfield, died Sunday, February 24, 2008, at Drew’s Place in Hillsdale. Mrs. Cook was born July 13, 1908, in Homer, to Leck and Mary (Ely) Ladd. She married Charles Leon Cook December 11, 1928. He preceded her in death July 9, 1984. Mrs. Cook attended Litchfield schools. She belonged to the Farm Bureau and the Litchfield United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Charles (Marilyn) Cook of Petoskey and James (Jan) Cook of Litchfield; a daughter, Mary Lee (Donald) Smith of Litchfield; a brother, Robert Ladd of Montgomery; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Litchfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Eloise F. Densmore Eloise F. Densmore, 82, of Homer, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Densmore was born June 21, 1925, in Cortland, New York, to Oscar and Mildred (Jennings) Griswold. She married Arthur Densmore December 31, 1949. He preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Densmore worked for Spring Arbor Industries, Great Mark Western Meat Processing in Quincy and also helped at her daughter’s day care. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, traveling, lighthouse memorabilia and historical buildings. She also enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. Survivors include two daughters, Ruth (Bob) Mestdagh and Annette (Bob) Taylor, both of Homer; two step-daughters, Rose Carson of Hemlock and Loretta Densmore of Jackson; a sister, Barbara Sumantri of Logansport, Indiana; a log-term friend, Susan Martin of Homer; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. William C. Wintersteen William (Bill) Wintersteen, 89, of Zephyrhills, Florida, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the home of his caregiver. Mr. Wintersteen was born December 23, 1918, in Calhoun County, to Ethel Mae (Mansfield) and Clarence Wintersteen. Mr. Wintersteen was the youngest of six children. He spent 40 years in Homer and Clarendon townships farming with his brother, John L. Wintersteen. In 1960, Mr. Wintersteen and his widowed mother moved to Zephyrhills with his brother John and his family. He worked for the City of Zephyrhills until he retired in 1981. He was a quiet man who loved a good joke. He was liked by neighbors and friends and loved by his family. He loved gardening, square dancing, and playing bingo. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Beatrice (Young) in 2004; three sisters, Alta Wintersteen, Marion (Maurice A.) Baker and Mabel (Jimmy E.) Campbell; two brothers, Donald J. (Myrtle L. Ballinger) Wintersteen and John L. (Eliza J. Hutchins) Wintersteen. Mr. Wintersteen was buried alongside his wife at Oakside Cemetery in Zephyrhills.

Wendy J. Wheeler Wendy J. Wheeler, 54, of Homer, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born September 18, 1953, in Albion, to Charles and Patsy (Armstrong) Prescott. Her father survives in Parma. She married Paul Miller February 23, 1974, in Homer. He preceded her in death in November of 2007. She married Mikey “Mike” Wheeler August 8, 1996. He preceded her in death December 28, 2005. Mrs. Wheeler was a resident of the area all of her life. She was a homemaker and a home healthcare provider for Helping Hands of Jackson. She was also a bus driver for Homer Public Schools, waitress, bartender and cook in the area for several establishments. Survivors include two daughters, Tracy Miller and fiancé Mark Farkas of Tekonsha and Jodie Miller of Homer; a stepdaughter, Tammy Vanderpool of Albion; a son, Christopher Miller of Homer; six grandchildren; four sisters, Sheila (David) Frost of Mt. Home, Arkansas, Sheryl Fulton of Homer, Louise (David) Boehlke and Julie Jeffrey, both of Albion; a half-sister Gwen Moorehead of Mississippi; two brothers, Donald E. Samuel D. Lambright Samuel D. Lambright, 87, formerly of Litchfield, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mr. Lambright was born November 9, 1920, in Litchfield, to Harvey and Helen (Staub) Lambright. He married Susan J. Sackett September 9, 1945. She preceded him in death November 3, 2003. Mr. Lambright graduated from Litchfield Community School in 1939, where he made several lifelong friends. He entered the United States Navy and served on a tanker fueling destroyers in the South Pacific during World War II. He received his certification and license from the Detroit Barber College in 1946. He worked as a barber for more than 43 years at the “Corner Barbershop” in Quincy. He was an active member of the Quincy Methodist Church and the Quincy Lions Club for several years. He and his wife were very active as a volunteers assisting the Department of Social Services. They also enjoyed excellent health after their retirement, allowing them to travel extensively around the world. He enjoyed and cherished life, interacting with people from all walks of life and the time he spent with his family. He loved the opportunity to spend time with his family and particularly enjoyed watching his descendants mature and experience the joys of life. He was loved by his family and will be infinitely missed. Survivors include a daughter Sarah (Alan) Himebaugh; a son, Donald Lambright; three granddaughters, Gaye M. (Coolman) Aaberg, Julia G. (Lambright) Walling and Lace D. Lambright; two grandsons, Jason B. Coolman and Adam L. Lambright; three great-grandchildren, Chase Coolman, Cameron Aaberg and Emma Aaberg. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Duane Lambright; and three sisters, Margaret Purdy, Opal Bender and Clara VanPatten. A graveside service was held Sunday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Quincy United Methodist Church. Mamie Dodds Mamie Dodds, 92, of Albion, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Tendercare of Albion. Mrs. Dodds was born April 30, 1915, in Acworth, Georgia, to Jesse and Julia Mitchell. She married J.B. Dodds April 2, 1932. He preceded her in death in 1960. Mrs. Dodds moved to Detroit in 1937 and later to Homer, Litchfield and finally to Albion in 1961. She was a homemaker and attended Leggett Chapel A.M.E. Church. She enjoyed music and played the keyboard, harmonica and guitar. Survivors include two daughters, Roberta (William) Hayes and Mary Ruth Morgan, both of Albion; a son, Jake (Shirley) Dodds of Southfield; a sister, Flora Lee Furr of Georgia; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Freddie, and two daughters, Florence and Lorene. Funeral services were held Saturday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Elder Stephen Williams officiating and the Rev. Phyllis Hightower delivering the eulogy. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.
Jerry E. Dunlap Jerry E. Dunlap, 58, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at home. Mr. Dunlap was born December 9, 1949, in Albion, to Howard and Helen (Glassmire) Dunlap. He married Mary Luna July 27, 1968. She survives. He attended North Adams and Homer schools, and graduated from Homer High School in 1968. He was a truck driver for Flint Trucking Co. in Litchfield. Mr. Dunlap’s hobbies included playing softball, bowling, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, camping, farming and spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Dunlap loved traveling to the state of Washington to visit his family. He was also an avid University of Michigan fan. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Lisa (Roger) Sprague and Theresa (Tony Baker) Schlumm, both of Litchfield, and Sherry (Todd) Britten of Howell; a son, Anthony Luna of Litchfield; two sisters, Shirley Matile of Quincy and Betty (Gary) Farmer of Homer; and nine grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday at George White Funeral Home, in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Robert F. Dowding Robert F. Dowding, 74, of Albion, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. Mr, Dowding was born April 11, 1933, to Warren E. and Ruth (Mosher) Dowding. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Dowding worked at Kelsey-Hayes for 25 years, as well as owning several service stations. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Albion, and a member of Masonic St. Albans Lodge #20. He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Bible Church and was a longtime member of East Eckford Community Church. Survivors include three daughters, Vicky (Jack) Pease of Tawas, Lori Bassett of Roscommon and Renee Dowding-Wright of Battle Creek; two sons, David Dowding of Homer and Rob Dowding of Florida; a sister, Joyce (Merton) Hurley of Texas; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Walter H. Nichols, Jr. officiating. Robert W. Douglas Robert W. Douglas, 75, of Homer, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Lakeland Regional Medical Facility in Florida. Mr. Douglas was born January 24, 1933, in Holland, to Earl and Marion (May) Douglas. He married Marilyn Truax February 21, 1953. She survives. He served in the U.S Army during the Korean War. He worked as a tool and die maker for Harvard Industries, worked for Corning Glass and for the former Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, all in Albion. He also worked at H.B. Sherman Company in Cass City. Mr. Douglas retired from the Homer Fire Department after volunteering for 37 years. He was active in the Coldwater Chapter O.E.S. #1, Carrick-Jarosz VFW Post 9411, Humanity Lodge #29, Marshall Commandry #17, York Rite College of Jackson, Homer Chapter 130, and was a past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He and his wife spent winters in Lakeland at Twin Palms Mobile Park, where he was involved in his new favorite pastime of shuffle board. He was always willing to offer a helping hand. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Deb (Dennis) Hartle of Homer and Annette (Joe) Collier of Albion; two sons, Scott (Karleen) Douglas of Homer, and Michael (Tracy) Douglas of Belleville, Illinois; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 18, at First Presbyterian Church in Homer, with the Rev. Tim Marvil officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Homer at a later date. March 26, 2008 Ilene G. Roberts Ilene G. Roberts, 69, of Homer, died Monday, March 24, 2008, at home with family and friends gathered at her bedside. Mrs. Roberts was born January 7, 1939, in Sears, to the Rev. Ralph J. and Georgia (Baker) Ringle. She married Noah G. Roberts July 31, 1959. He survives. Mrs. Roberts was a resident of the area all of her life. She was a homemaker and worked several factory jobs in the Homer and Albion area. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and cooking. She also loved having coffee with family and friends. In addition to her husband, survivors include four daughters, Izora Reedy of Albion, LaDonna (Lacy) Allen of Homer, Ramona Roberts of Albion and Carla (Joseph) Curran of Homer; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Elsie (James) Collier of Albion; two brothers, Richard (Arleta) Ringle of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Ralph (Jacqueline) Ringle of Coldwater. Preceding her in death were her parents; three sisters, Marilyn Burnworth, Esther Dockett and Maydean Bryant; and a brother, Theodore Ringle. Funeral arrangements will be handled by J. Sandra A. Osborn Sandra A. Osborn, 68, of Homer, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Osborn was born January 20, 1940, in Albion, to Edward and Beryl (Measel) Heiney. She married Neal D. Osborn April 26, 1958. He survives. Mrs. Osborn was a graduate of Homer High School. She was a homemaker all of her life and a lifelong resident of the Homer area. She enjoyed camping, sewing and embroidering. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter Cynthia Osborn (Michael Akers) of Albion; two sons, Russell (Michelle) Osborn of Marshall and Todd (Mary) Osborn of Albion; a sister, Jean Hemminger of Montana; a brother, Donald (Annadean) Heiney of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Ralph E. Klein Ralph E. Klein, 85, of Davisburg, Michigan, formerly of Albion, died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce. He was born September 20, 1922, in Albion to Edward and Cora (Westmureller) Klein. He married Eda L. Huston June 24, 1946. She preceded him in death in 1989. Mr. Klein served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Gale Manufacturing until 1967, then Maple City Auto, Pyramid Pattern, Albion Machine and Tool and United Pipe and Supply. He was a member of the Pattern Makers Association, Elks Lodge #1797, Moose Lodge of Marshall and VFW Post #3672 in Albion. He enjoyed bow hunting, golfing, fishing and dancing. He is survived by a daughter, Jaci (Bill) Raab of Davisburg; two sons, Ron (Kathrine) Klein of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Russ (Wendy) Klein of Auburn, Washington; a sister, Marcella Parrot of Birch Run; a sister-in-law, Pauline Klein of Marshall; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Robert D. Carl Robert D. Carl, 75, of Albion, died Friday, April 4, 2008, at his home. He was born August 3, 1932, in Middleville, to Lester R. and Grace (Johnson) Carl. He served in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 15 years. Mr. Carl managed a gas station on North Superior Street in Albion from 1962-1971. He owned a restaurant, Katie’s Kitchen, from 1971-1988. He also worked for the City of Albion Water Department and O.K. Boiler. He was an avid Indy 500 race fan, attending for 38 years, after first going to a race with his father in 1947. He enjoyed sports, including racing midget cars. He is survived by two daughters, Heidi A. Carl of Brownsburg, Indiana, and Candy K. Carl of Homer; a brother, Calvin (Jackie) Carl of Wyoming, Michigan; a sister-in-law, Annice Gould of Clark Lake; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Katie Egnatuck. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester Raymond Carl Jr. and Stanley Eugene Carl. There will be a memorial service Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m., at J. Rachel M. Huffman Rachel M. Huffman, 86, of Homer, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Battle Creek Health System. She was born May 7, 1921, in Alger, Ohio, to Earl and Chloe (Pratt) Huston. She married Howard H. Huffman August 21, 1943. He survives. Mrs. Huffman was a school teacher in the public school system for 37 years, having received a master’s degree in education. She taught in rural schools in south Albion, Litchfield public schools and Homer elementary school. Her policy was always to teach the children, not the subject. Mrs. Huffman was an avid sports enthusiast and played college basketball at Bowling Green. She was a former member of the Christian Science Church. A talented musician, she played violin, piano and organ. Her artistic talent was showcased in her involvement with local theater, particularly her performance in “Our Town” in Homer. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Huffman is survived by a daughter, Jana (Doug Hath) Kurrle of Owosso; four sons, Alan (Corlinda) Huffman of Homer, Damon Huffman of Flushing, Kevin (Debra) Huffman of Marshall and Jaimie Huffman of Dallas, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Delta Vincent, Rosemary Yates and Eda Klein. Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Homer Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Myrtie Hamm Myrtie Hamm, 95, of Homer, died Saturday, March 16, 2008, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Hamm was born February 15, 1913, in Grand Ledge, to William and Mary (West) Brown. She lived in the Homer and Tekonsha area most of her life. She was married to Clarence Wilson for 40 years before his death in 1968. She married Roy Hamm in 1973, and he preceded her in death in 2004. She attended Homer First Presbyterian Church and was a member of St. Joe Ladies Aide and the Young at Heart Club. She also volunteered for Homer Caring and Sharing. Mrs. Hamm enjoyed flowers, yard work and bird watching, as well as crocheting and quilting. Survivors include three sons, Lloyd Wilson and Irvin (Lynette) Wilson, both of Bellevue and Bill (Barb) Wilson of Rives Junction; 25 grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Doris Smith and Joyce Eplee; a son, Clarence Wilson Jr.; three sisters; and four brothers. Robert D. Booth Robert D. Booth, 80, of Jonesville, formerly of Homer, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. Mr. Booth was born January 11, 1928, in Homer, to Howard and Florence (Hawkins) Booth. He served in the U.S. Army in post World War II Japan in the Eighth Calvary. He married Evelyn “Ruth” Van Fleet May 9, 1948. She survives. Mr. Booth was in quality control for Union Steel for 20 years and also worked for Michigan Milk Producers for 20 years. He was a member, elder and deacon of the Presbyterian Church in Homer. He had many Masonic affiliations including Humanity Lodge No. 29 F&AM, Homer Chapter No. 130, Royal Arch Masons, Marshall Commandery No. 17 Knights Templar and Stella Chapter No. 140 OES. He was involved with Albion Council No. 57 Royal and Select Masters, Jackson York Rite College No. 3, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Grand Rapids Consistory, and Michigan Past Commanders’ Association Knights Templar. He received the Order of the Purple Cross in Chicago in 1996 and was Mason of the Year in 1994. He was also an officer of Homer Alumni Association. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and walking. He also enjoyed woodworking and restoring family heirlooms. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Carra (Conrad) Bushong of Laotto, Indiana; Bonnie Drake of Battle Creek and Jana Booth of Albion; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, David, William and George, and a grandson Brock Knuth. There will be a visitation held Thursday, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion from 6-8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 2, at Homer Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Betty Jane Thacker Betty Jane Thacker, 72, of Homer, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at her residence. Mrs. Thacker was born October 7, 1935, in Shelbiana, Kentucky, to Francis M. and Jettie (Thacker) Phillips. She married Clifford Thacker June 7, 1958, in Clintwood, Virginia. He preceded her in death May 17, 1977. She was a resident of Homer since 1976 and Michigan since the early 1960s. She was a homemaker and a member of the the Church of Christ. Mrs. Thacker enjoyed gardening, sewing, making quilts and spending time with her grandchildren. She was born March 20, 1912, in Breathitt County, Kentucky, to Willie and Rebecca (Camel) Prater. She married Kelly Clemons in 1942, and he preceded her in death approximately 28 years ago. Mrs. Clemons was a homemaker and was a member of the Church of Deliverance in Homer. She enjoyed keeping her home, gardening and walking. Survivors include a sister, Rosie Pugh of Knox, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Dulcline Clemons, Laura Richie, Elizabeth Bailey and Elvira Fugate; and three brothers, Edward, Jerry and Stuart Prater. Florence “Kitty” Bills Florence “Kitty” Bills, 78, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at home. She was born April 10, 1930, in Flint, to Alex and Geraldine (Harris) Sheerer. She married Duane Bills September 19, 1947. He survives. Mrs. Bills had worked at the Litchfield Nursing Centre, Litchfield Community Schools as playground playground supervisor and Rakers Acres. She belonged to the Tomorrows Heirlooms Doll Club and taught Sunday school. Manford E. Wilson Manford E. Wilson, 76, of Homer, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born August 2, 1931, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to Victor E. and Olive E. (Paasch) Wilson. Mr. Wilson married Linda Moore in January of 1949. He had been a resident of the area for 14 years. He was C.N.A.; a miner for borax and gold; worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Denison, Texas; and was a school teacher in South Dakota for a number of years. Mr. Wilson is survived by two sons, Victor P. (Eden) Wilson of Portland, Texas and Vern L. (Sandy) Wilson of Charlotte, North Carolina; a daughter, Paula J. (Rob) Towery of Homer; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jessie Wilson of Joplin, Wyoming and Vickie (Paul) Patterson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Mungle, and his stepmother, Helen Wilson. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, at 11 a.m., at the Erie Street Chapel of J. Dale F. Cooper Dale F. Cooper, 94, of Marshall, formerly of Homer, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Whispering Meadows in Marshall. He was born October 13, 1913, in Clarendon Township, to Fred and Clarabel Cooper. Mr. Cooper was a farmer and also worked for Eaton Corporation and was a truck driver for 17 years. He also worked in the milling department at Albion Malleable, from where he retired. He attended West Eckford Missionary Church, and at one point sang in a barbershop quartet. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his stepfather, Albert Southwell. Funeral services were held Monday, May 5, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, in Albion, with Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment followed at West Clarendon Cemetery.
Joan R. (Powers) Miller Joan R. (Powers) Miller, 77, of Albion died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Tendercare of Marshall. She was born July 23, 1930, in Battle Creek, to Thurston Teft “Tiny” and Ruth Mapes (Russell) Powers of Newton Township. She married Marion Miller August 6, 1950, and he survives. Mrs. Miller graduated from Lakeview High School in 1949. She had been a resident of Albion all of her married life on the family farm in Albion Township. She was a nurses aide/hostess at Albion Hospital. Her memberships and activities included Silver Dance Club, Albion Square Dance Club, Albion Garden Club, DAR, Modern Home Ec, South Albion Women’s Club, Howell Community Club, president of the Hospital Service League, chairman of Hospital Service League Charity Ball, supporter of the Festival of the Forks, Meals on Wheels, TV hostess Albion Hospital, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion, St. Paul Lutheran Church congregational hostess, Friendship Leagues - Lutheran Church, 4H leader/judge Junior Farm Bureau, supporter of Home Grange, supporter of the Amazing Corn Harvest Festival, Charter Member of American Agriculture Movement, Centennial Farm Organization, 50 year member Michigan Milk Producers Association, Homer Historical Society, Michigan National Farm Organization. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. She was very involved and supportive of all of their activities. After she retired, she enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Hawaii and the Rose Bowl. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Chuck (Paula) Miller, Curt (Karen) Miller and Chris Miller, all of Homer; three daughters, Cindy (Jerry) Irvin of Homer, Carol Miller of Marshall and Connie (Charlie) Clines of Battle Creek; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Barbara (Powers) Brown of San Diego, California. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy (Miller) Shoemaker. Evelyn I. Blain Evelyn I. Blain, 90, of Tekonsha, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Marshall Nursing and Rehabilitation Community. She was born August 6, 1917, in Calumet, to Daniel and Ulrica (Kaikkonen) Tyvela. She married Charles J. Blain in October of 1945. He preceded her in death October 26, 1968. Mrs. Blain was a homemaker and a Homer resident since 1958. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion and a life member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW #9411 in Homer. She enjoyed attending the senior center in Homer. She is survived by three daughters, Diane (Richard) Youells of Kalamazoo, Barbara (David) Woods of Tekonsha and Judith (Charles) Hatcher of Williamsburg; a son, William Doe of Battle Creek; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Thompson; a grandson, Jeffery Thompson; a step-grandson, Michael Woods; and 11 brothers and sisters. Robert W. “Bill” Huckfeldt Robert W. “Bill” Huckfeldt, 64, of Homer, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at his home. He was born February 19, 1944, in Albion, to Otto George and Marian E. (Beam) Huckfeldt. Mr. Huckfeldt married Rose M. Holden May 18, 1968, and she survives. He worked at Eaton Corporation for 30 years as a machinist. He also worked for Homer Community Schools. For about 10 years, he ran Huckfeldt Small Engine Repair. Bill was a member of the National Guard, U.A.W. and St. Joseph Valley Old Engine Association. He enjoyed camping, old cars, and repairing and engineering small equipment. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert (Lisa) Huckfeldt of Albion and Scott (Dawn) Huckfeldt of Homer; two foster sons, James Gene Fraley of Litchfield and Tim Fraley of Homer; two grandchildren; a sister, RoseAnn “Sue” McGillis of Albion; and a brother, George Otto Huckfeldt of Olivet. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter. A memorial service will be held Saturday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Mike Hicks officiating. Peggy Semon Peggy Semon, age 67, of Homer, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Best Care Living Center in Marshall. She was born November 24, 1940, in Vanlear, Kentucky, to Sherman and Fanie (Robinette) Abshire. She married Thomas Semon in Ranger, West Virginia, December 3, 1961. He preceded her in death January 28, 1993. Mrs. Semon came to Homer in 1961. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at Primaneer Manufacturing in Jonesville; the five and dime store and Allens Department Store, both in Homer; and she also delivered Meals on Wheels in Homer. She enjoyed crocheting, making baskets, gardening, playing cards and her grandsons. She is survived by two daughters, Sheila (John) Klingaman of Marshall and Pam (Brandon) Robinson of Homer; three grandsons; two sisters, Joyce Hatfield of Windham, Ohio, and Myrtle Sigman of Orlando, Florida; and a brother, Alfred “Bubby” Abshire of Ranger, West Virginia. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Semon was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Abshire, and a sister, Emma Jean Hall. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Finley Drive Chapel of the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Elizabeth A. Rogers Elizabeth A. Rogers, 81, of Homer, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at her residence. She was born December 8, 1926, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Jim and Bessie Anderson. She married Lewis W. Rogers June 8, 1948, in Hardy, Arkansas. He preceded her in death August 2, 2007. Mrs. Rogers had been a resident of Homer for 48 years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, and stripping and refinishing furniture. She is survived by a granddaughter, Erika Cortright of Homer; a son-in-law, James E. “Eric” Cortright of Homer; and two sisters, Opal Gordon of Houston, Texas, and Mary Crowe of Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Kay Rogers and Lou Beth Cortright. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial graveside service was held Monday, June 2, at 1 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Patsy M. Wilbur Patsy M. Wilbur, 80, of Albion, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at Marshall Nursing and rehabilitation Community in Marshall. She was born in Albion May 13, 1928, to Ward and Bessie (Burk) Swann. She married Harold Medford Wilbur April 5, 1947, and he survives. Mrs. Wilbur worked for Albion Public Schools as a bus driver for more than 17 years. She was a member of the Albion Free Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. She enjoyed camping and fishing, and especially enjoyed her family. In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Sara (Lewis) McKim of Marshall, Martha “Marti” Wilbur of Kalamazoo and Nancy Collier (Mark Mohler) of Albion; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, George Swann and Donald Swann, both of Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald Swann, and two infant brothers. Funeral services were held Friday, June 6, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Robert C. Edwards Robert C. Edwards, 88, of Homer, died Monday, June 2, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was a 1938 graduate of Homer High School and a radioman for the Army infantry division in Lehti during World War II. Mr. Edwards was a metallurgist at Amco Steel in Zanesville, Ohio, before retiring. He loved reading, photography, working in his yard and was a HAM radio operator. Survivors include a sister, Charlotte Hepler of Hanover; and numerous nieces, including Kaye Mestdagh of Homer, Roberta Doelker formerly of Jackson and Jane Lammers of Spring Arbor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Nora Edwards; his wife, Melva; and two sisters, Blanche Stephens and Mildred M. Good. Jadaenne M. Studer Jadaenne M. Studer, 59, of Union City, formerly of Homer, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Studer was born December 3, 1948, in Albion to Solomon Floyd and Violet Elizabeth (Winchell) Reynolds. She married Standley F. Studer June 19, 1976. He survives. Mrs. Studer was a homemaker, and at one time worked at Homer Senior Center. She also helped with adult foster care. She was a Watkins dealer, a member of Weight Watchers, Cook’s Prairie Baptist Church and Grace Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed handcrafts. In addition to her husband, survivors include a sister, Betty Mulkey of Homer; four brothers, Kenneth Reynolds of Homer, Harely Reynolds of Litchfield, David Reynolds of Olivet and John Reynolds of Texas; two aunts, Grace Van Order and Charlotte Clark, both of Albion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Elmer. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Richard A. Wheaton Richard A. Wheaton, 65, of Homer, died Monday, June 23, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Wheaton was born November 28, 1942, in Marshall, to Robert W. and Thelma Mae (Thurow) Wheaton. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Vietnam War. He married Emily Collins November 21, 1964. She survives. Mr. Wheaton worked as a set-up supervisor at Brooks Foundry for more than 20 years. He enjoyed old cars, yard work and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Brian (Janet) Wheaton of Sebring, Florida and Richard A. Wheaton of Arcadia, Florida; a sister, Maxine Thompson of Jackson; a brother, Mayor William (Lou) Wheaton of Albion; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert. A graveside service was held Monday, June 30, at Riverside Cemetery in Albion, with Father Edward A. Scully officiating. Kay E. Vanderford Kay E. Vanderford, 76, of Homer, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at her home after an extended illness surrounded by her children. Mrs. Vanderford was born May 5, 1932, in Homer to Earl and Marion (Sinclair) Miller. She was the widow of Earl Vanderford. She was a licensed practical nurse, receiving her degree after raising her children. She worked at several rest homes in the area. Mrs. Vanderford was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Homer. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid collector of character dolls, and enjoyed attending flea markets and antique shows. Survivors include a daughter, Chris (Troy) Green of Rockport, Texas; two sons, Douglas Vanderford of Homer and Steve (Caroline) Vanderford of Aransas Pass, Texas; three grandchildren, Johnna Vanderford of Homer, Bryce Vanderford of Houston, and Brandon Veatch of Dallas; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline (George) Glance of Brigham City, Vermont; and two brothers, Wayne (Nancy) Chapman of Battle Creek, and David (Kellen) Chapman of Rocklin, California. A private graveside ceremony will be held. There will be no visitation. Mattie Lou Barnett Mattie Lou Barnett, 78, formerly of Litchfield, died Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Barnett was born October 27, 1927, in Kentucky to Arthur James and Betty (Barnett) Hurley. She married Monroe Barnett. He preceded her in death in 1975. Mrs. Barnett was a graduate of Hillsdale High School. She was an avid bingo player and loved auctions. Survivors include six sons, Garey (Judy), Perry (Cookie) and Jerry (Linda) Barnett, all of Litchfield, Larry (Squeak) Barnett of Hillsdale, Terry (Annette) Barnett of Concord and Barry (Pat) Barnett of Jacksonville, Florida; a daughter, Penny and Kayla Barnett of Hillsdale; two sisters Joan Hurley of Hillsdale and Creta Bigelow of Concord; a brother, Jim Hurley of Allen; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Leone M. Gibson Leone M. Gibson, 96, of Marshall, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Best Care Plus Living Center in Marshall. Mrs. Gibson was born March 24, 1912, in Monroe, to Oscar and Marion (Clayton) Sievert. She married William Baylee Gibson October 1, 1938, in Carlton. He preceded her in death January 12, 1987. She lived in the Calhoun County area all of her life, moving to Marshall in 2000. She was a registered nurse at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall for a number of years. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross in Homer and taught reading for Homer High School Adult Education classes. She was very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Homer and the Monday Club. Survivors include two sons, Charles W. (Christine) Gibson of Scotts and Robert F. Gibson of Jonesville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar and Paul Sievert; and two sisters, Marion Winchell and Myrtle Gilbert. According to her wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 18, at 11:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Homer Township, with the Rev. Michael Basha Michael Basha, 88, of Parma, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at his home. Mr. Basha was born October 13, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio to Adam and Anna (Tomko) Basha. He married Frances Marian Vuroker March 27, 1944, and she survives. Mr. Basha served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps in Germany. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Albion College in 1950. He was an educator and taught at Homer Community Schools and Taylor Schools. He retired after 20 years, and moved back to Albion in 1982. He previously worked at Corning Glass as a supervisor for more than nine years. He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Albion and, while residing in Livonia, was a member of St. Andrews. He was an American Legion member, enjoyed softball and was on the winning All-Conference Baseball Team in 1950. He was a member of the Albion College A-Club. He also enjoyed gardening, reading and woodworking. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Becky Sue (Larry) Mason of Clarksville; two sons, Steven Basha of Woodland, California and Paul Basha of Scottsdale, Arizona; a sister, Helen Stewart of Parma, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, James, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held Monday at J. Dwight R. “Duke” Norton Dwight R. “Duke” Norton, 89, of Albion, formerly of Litchfield, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Foote Health Systems in Jackson. He was born February 23, 1919 in Albion to Marion and Minnie (Garrett) Norton. He married June M. Shaffer November 7, 1942, in Albion. She preceded him in death September 20, 1975. Mr. Norton was a 1938 graduate of Washington Gardner High School. He worked at Union Steel in Albion for 29 years, and then at Albion College in the maintenance department for 10 years, retiring in 1982. He moved back to Albion from Litchfield in March, 2007, after living there for 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, yard work, gardening and fishing the coffee shop every morning. Survivors include a daughter Sue (Donald) Yorkey of Concord; a son Robert (Bobbie) Norton of Albion; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Miller was born July 10, 1936, in Hillsdale County, Michigan, to Leo F. and Margaret L. (Johnson) Miller. He married Lois (Evans) January 5, 1957, and she survives. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Jonesville High School in 1955 and served in the National Guard. He was employed at Simpson Manufacturing Company for 30 years and was an avid baseball fan, fisherman and hunter. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Rick (Diane) Miller of Horton, Robert (Candace) Miller of Litchfield and Russell (Jeri) Miller of Jonesville; a brother, Frederick (Marlene) Miller of Mosherville; and eight grandchildren. Warren G. Sawdey Warren G. Sawdey, 79, of Litchfield Township, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born July 4, 1929, in Jonesville, to Arthur G. and Gladys (Dryer) Sawdey. Mr. Sawdey graduated from Jonesville High School in 1948 and was employed many years at Simpson Manufacturing Co. in Litchfield. An avid bowler, he was a member of the “Warren’s Ramblers” team. Survivors include a daughter, Sara (Steve) Benson of Jonesville; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Gardner of Milton, Florida; a son, Karl (Pat) Sawdey of Hillsdale; a sister, Ardith (William) Leslie, Sr. of Clark Lake; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Mr. Littebrant was born May 21, 1916, in Homer Township to Myrtle (Wooden) Littebrant. Mr. Littebrant served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Arleta Rawson June 30, 1958. She preceded him in death March 3, 2004. Mr. Littebrant was a machinist at Simpson’s Industries in Litchfield for 39 years until he retired. He was a member of Homer United Methodist Church and of VFW Post 9411 in Homer. Littebrant loved woodworking and made many fine pieces. He also did many woodworking projects for his church. Survivors include three nephews, Danny Van Antwerp of Paisley, Florida, Steve (Margaret) Van Antwerp of Jackson and Mark (Cathy) Van Antwerp of Pleasant Lake; three great-nephews, Casey, Chris and Patrick Van Antwerp; his good friends at Stagecoach Café; and many special friends at Homer United Methodist Church, especially his lifelong friends and neighbors, Gerald and Rosemary Shaffer, of Homer. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Richard. Funeral services will be Friday, August 15, at noon at Homer United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Fox officiating. Beulah Mae Brodock Salmer Beulah Mae Brodock Salmer, 96, of Homer, died Sunday, August 10, 2008. She was born May 23, 1912, in Kalkaska, to Albert and Winnie (Calkins) Coxon. Among her 102 descendants that span six generations are two sons, Leon C. (Joan) Brodock of Tekonsha and Harold W. Brodock of Spring Arbor; a daughter, Carol M. Kirkum of Bronson; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 39 great-great grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two husbands, William C. Brodock in 1975 and Burval C. Salmer in 2002; a daughter, Virgie M. Wilson; six brothers L.D., Dorr, Marvin, Tracy and Ernest Coxon; and a sister, Nina Carlisle. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and today (Wednesday) from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., at Kempf Funeral Home in Mar-shall, with family members present Tuesday evening and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6 -8 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hilltop Chapel, with the Rev. Ruth Thompson Ruth Thompson, 91, of Hillsdale, died Friday, August 15, 2008, at Drew’s Village Green in Hillsdale. She was born February 28, 1917, in Jonesville, to Lee Alger and Minnie (Donihue) Baker. She married Felts “Tommy” Thompson September 25, 1937. He preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Thompson was involved with food catering for 4-H for 33 years. She had previously wintered in Zephyrhills, Florida, for many years. She was a member of Extension and was a 4-H leader. Surviving are three children, Elaine (Marvin) Rich and Gordon (Sharon) Thompson, both of Hillsdale and Lynn (Gail) Thompson of Litchfield; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Doris Pfau, of Jonesville. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Ross, Carl and Ralph Baker. Funeral services were held Monday at the Jonesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment followed at Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. Ivan L. Fast Ivan L. Fast, 85, of Coldwater, died Sunday, August 17, 2008. Mr. Fast was born June 28, 1923, in North Adams, to Raymond Dallas and Harriet Alta (Foust) Fast. He married Elva Marie Rising August 29, 1943, in Homer. She survives. Mr. Fast graduated from Homer High School in 1941. He worked for Vaughn Brothers Farms in Albion until 1946 and farmed in Maple Grove until 1951, when he and his wife moved to Clarendon Township where they farmed for 38 years. They also ran a trucking, grain, fertilizer and seed business for 25 years. He was a member of the Progressive Farmers of Calhoun County, Calhoun County Farm Bureau and registered Angus Cattle Association and served on the Homer Community School Board. After moving to Morrison Lake near Coldwater in 1989, he and Elva attended Girard United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include two brothers, Vernon (Glenna) Fast of Marshall and Marion (Sara) Fast of Longmont, Colorado; two sons, Larry (LeAnn) Fast of Paradise, Texas, and Raymond (Brenda) Fast of Coldwater; a daughter, Janyth (Gus) Evans of Homer; two grandsons, Scott (Brenda) Griffiths of Tekonsha and Justin Fast of Coldwater; three granddaughters, Christy (Rick) Boden of Homer, Karrie (Gary) Noel of Whitehall and Melissa (David) Jones of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; five great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. Mr. Fast was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Kevin Fast; two brothers, Clarence (Evelyn) Fast and G. Dale (Margaret) Fast; and a sister, Eunice (Laurel) Poling. Arlene J. White Arlene J. White, 87, of Litchfield, died Friday, August 22, 2008, at her home. Mrs. White was born August 21, 1921, in Frankfort, New York, to Seymour and Jane (Heron) Smith. She married George H. White in 1943. He preceded her in death in 2002. They moved to Litchfield in 1967 and owned and operated the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, Reading, Camden and Quincy. Mrs. White belonged to the Litchfield Sorosis Club, the Litchfield Bridge Club and attended the Litchfield Congregational Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Steve Doyle) Carter of Troy, and Nancy Travis (Kevin Tidd) of Litchfield; a son, James (Janis) White of Litchfield, six grandchildren, John (Francesca), James and Todd (Michelle) Carter, and Stephanie, Kelly and Alex White; three great-grandchildren, Mayla, Miles and Madelyn Carter; and a sister, Meribeth Greer of New Hartford, New York. James P. Hills James P. Hills, 67, of Jonesville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit. Mr. Hills was born July 23, 1941, in Clare, to Don and Eileen (Thomson) Hills. His mother survives in Clare. He married Donna Wilson Hills July 28, 1962. She also survives. Mr. Hills graduated from Coleman High School in 1959. He retired from Simpson Industries in Litchfield after 36 years of service. He was an avid hunter, loved to fish and enjoyed all sports. He belonged to the National Rifle Association and was a member of South Litchfield Church. In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a daughter, Charlotte (Burt) Zorn of Reading; a brother, Kirk (Judy) Hills of Clare; a sister, Kay (Michael) Burton of Harrison; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karyn, and his father, Don Hills. Funeral services were held Monday, September 1, at George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Michael Hurlbert officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Frank A. Laskey Frank A. Laskey, 80, of Homer, died Saturday, August 30, 2008, at the Life Span-Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. Mr. Laskey was born February 21, 1928, in Detroit, to Densil and Helen (Murphy) Laskey. He married Joan Baker November 24, 1962, and she survives. He moved to Homer in 1970, and worked at T & S Equipment Co. (Vestil) for 15 years and also at L & L Auto Repair since 1990. He belonged to Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Union City and the Knights of Columbus in Bronson. He was formerly a member of the Taylor Moose Lodge. Gardening, yard work, and helping his children with 4-H projects were favorite hobbies of Mr. Laskey’s, but he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Laskey is survived by two daughters, Carol (Jesse) Spradlin of Union City and Denise Laskey of Homer; three sons, John (Tammy) Laskey and Gary (Debbie) Laskey, both of Tekonsha, and Richard (Lisa) Laskey of Homer; three brothers, Don Laskey of Taylor, Chuck Laskey of Mesa, Arizona, and Jerry Laskey of Prescott; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ralph Laskey. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 6-8 p.m, including a Rosary Service at 7 p.m., at the J. Terri Len Knaggs Terri Len Knaggs, 43, of Litchfield, died Friday, August 29, 2008, in Atlanta, Michigan. Mrs. Knaggs was born October 20, 1964, in Cleburne, Texas. She married Gerald Knaggs February 17, 1995 in Litchfield, and he survives. She graduated in 1983 from Cleburne High School. She volunteered her time as a member of the Litchfield Zoning Committee and was also active in many activities at the Litchfield Community Schools where her children are students. In addition to her husband, survivors include two children, Tristan and Taylor Knaggs, at home; her mother and stepfather, Deborah and C.A. Ezell of Alvarado, Texas; her father and stepmother, Richard and Sue Wise of Cleburne, Texas; four sisters, Lisa Peetz, Gidget Brunson, Angela Kennedy and Crista Williams, all of Texas; a brother, Richard Dale Wise of Texas; her grandparents, Velma Wise of Cleburne, Texas, and Dewey and Joan Bullard of Lakeland, Florida; and numerous stepsisters and stepbrothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. The family received friends at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield Tuesday, September 2, which included a funeral service, with Pastor Brent Stille officiating. Hubert Mulkey, Jr. Hubert Mulkey, Jr., 75, of Marshall, died Sunday, August 31, 2008, at Tendercare of Albion. Mr. Mulkey was born August 24, 1933, in Knoxville, Tennessee to Hubert and Mattie (Norton) Mulkey, Sr. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He married Theresa Collins Wooten Palmer and later Betty Mulkey. Both marriages ended in divorce. Mr. Mulkey was a sealer for 25 years at Corning Glass, and also worked as a bartender at the Eagles, where he was a member and past president. He enjoyed baseball, football and basketball. He also enjoyed playing poker and games of chance. Survivors include five daughters, Lona Pearl Gibson of Albion, Jeanne (Chuck) Gibson Cole of Concord, Diana Adams of Jackson, Karen (Harold) Wintersteen of Battle Creek and Virginia Ann Allen of Union City; three sons, Shane Little of Albion, Hubert Mulkey III of Marshall and Bill Dean (Kari) Gibson of Tucson, Arizona; two sisters, Sammie Pratt of Homer and Betsy Saylor of Lancaster, Ohio; two brothers, Vernon “Ed” Mulkey of Albion and James L. Mulkey of Homer; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jr. Wooten; four brothers and a sister. Graveside services were held Monday, September 8, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to help with funeral expenses. Gerald Plumb Gerald Plumb, 88, of Litchfield, died Sunday, September 7, 2008, at home. Mr. Plumb was born July 21, 1920, in Pulaski Township, to Clarence and Grace (Grover) Plumb. He married Ophelia Hawkes January 31, 1969. She survives. Mr. Plumb graduated from Hanover High School in 1937 and had been a lifelong farmer. He served on the Hillsdale County Fair Board for 46 years, was a Hillsdale County Commissioner for 14 years, a Scipio Township Supervisor, a lifelong member of the Grange, and belonged to the Lions Club and Knights of Pythias Lodge. He also belonged to the Presbyterian Church (formerly) and the Litchfield Congregation-al Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Taylor of Portage; two sons, Gary (Roxanne) Plumb of Concord and Dennis (Donna) Plumb of Jonesville; four step-children, James (Susan) Hawkes, George (Carol) Hawkes, Randy Hawkes and Cecelia (David) Evans, all of Litchfield; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives, Ruth and Frances; a daughter; a son; a sister; and two brothers. Visitation was schedule for Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Edith F. Daniels Edith F. Daniels, 90, of Litchfield Township, died Sunday, September 7, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Daniels was born July 5, 1918, in Quincy to Elmore and Carrie (Hammond) Culbert. She graduated from Quincy High School in 1935. She married G. Orville Daniels April 11, 1940, and he preceded her in death in 2005. She enjoyed being a homemaker and farm wife. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Jerry) Bender of Litchfield and Sandra (Daniel) Williams of Homer; a son, Stuart Daniels of Litchfield; a sister, Lucille Anderson of Litchfield; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Daniels was preceded in death by three brothers; five sisters; and a son, Norman Daniels. Roy J. Ratliff Jr. Roy J. Ratliff Jr., 82, of Albion, died Thursday, September 11, 2008, at home in the loving care of his family. Mr. Ratliff was born May 5, 1926, in Henry Clay, Kentucky, to Roy and Blanche (Stanley) Hamilton Ratliff Sr. He married Mataline (Allen) Conley March 14, 1962. She preceded him in death March 23, 1995. Mr. Ratliff graduated from Dickenson Memorial High School in Clintwood, Virginia, in 1944, where he grew up with his grandmother, Callie Stanley. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a number of medals. He worked for Clinchfield Coal of Clinchfield, Virginia, for 14 years. He later worked for Corning Glass in Albion for 21 years as a press operator, retiring when they closed. He was also a certified electrician and heavy equipment operator. Mr. Ratliff was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Homer. Survivors include a sister, Mable Hamilton of Green Cove Springs, Florida; two stepsisters, Sally Ratliff of Green Cove Springs and Della Faye Hamilton of Ohio; three half sisters, Patty June Davis of Ohio, Vada Jean Hamilton of Chicago and Reba Gay Hamilton of Missouri; four stepbrothers, the Rev. Thomas Hamilton of Albion, the Rev. Albert Hamilton of Green Cove Springs, Charlie Hamilton of Polk, Ohio, and Bobby Ray Hamilton of Pikeville, Kentucky; and a half brother, Franklin D. Hamilton of Ohio. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Jonie Jean Passmore; two brothers; and a sister. Funeral services were held Monday, September 15, at J. Elta L. Hepler Elta L. Hepler, 91, of Albion, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born December 4, 1916, in Albion to Harvey and Hattie Dunn. She married Howard J. Hepler September 17, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Hepler graduated from Albion High School in 1935. She spent most of her life in Albion and spent winters in Florida. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, taking care of her home and her family. Survivors include a daughter, Linda (John) Monk of Homer; a son, Warren J. (Cecelia) Hepler of Marshall; and a granddaughter, Melissa Monk of Homer. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two children, Janice and George; and three brothers, Donald, Vernon and Edward Dunn. Ronald A. Avery Ronald A. Avery, 90, of Jackson, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at his home. He was born on November 12, 1917, in Homer to Perry and Leta (nee Reese) Avery. Ron graduated as valedictorian from Homer High School in 1935 where he was a member of the debate club, the orchestra, and president of both the Student Council, and the Commercial Club. He moved to Jackson after graduation from Cleary College in Ypsilanti. He joined the newly formed National Bank of Jackson where he worked from 1937 to 1941. In 1941 he joined the Sheet Aluminum Corporation. Mr. Avery returned to the National Bank of Jackson and launched a career which spanned more than 40 years. Mr. Avery played a greater role in planning and implementing key changes that contributed to the growth of NBJ. In particular, Mr. Avery provided the impetus for NBJ’s acquisition of banks in Brooklyn, Concord, Grass Lake and Manchester. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson. He was involved as a member of the Kiwanis Club for more than 19 years, which included service as a president and director. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge 17, Chapter #3 R.A.M., Jackson Commandery # 9. In addition, he was director and vice president of Vista Grande Villa, a senior citizens living center, and served in several leadership roles in the United Way. He was also on the Goodwill Industries board. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra J. (John) McRae; three sons, Dale R. (Jeanne) Avery, Gary L. (Susan) Avery and Richard L. (Karen) Avery; nine grandchildren, Kimberly, John, Todd, Thad, Tiffany, Cara, Kevin, Jason, and Lisa; seven great-grandchildren, Ashlie, Benjamin, Zachary, Spencer, Gracie, Dylan, and Jake; a brother, Carroll (June) Avery; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Avery was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Josephine. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20 at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sue Babb officiating. Anita K. Ratliff-Katz Anita K. Ratliff-Katz, 49, of Colon, died Friday, September 19, 2008, at her residence. She was born January 20, 1959, in Albion, to Ervin and Juanita (Perry) Ratliff. They survive in Homer. Ms. Ratliff-Katz was a 1977 graduate of Homer High School. She was a billing director for Air Way in Battle Creek for 17 years, and worked several years ago at True Grist Dinner Theater in Homer. She was a member of the P.N.A. in Battle Creek, and enjoyed watching and feeding her swans and birds, along with boating and reading. In a addition to her parents, survivors include a son, Navin (Elizabeth) Ratliff-Katz, of Burt; two brothers, Garvin Ratliff of San Diego, California, and Levin “Lee” Ratliff, of Punta Gorda, Florida; a grandbaby on the way; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and two infant brothers. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation, according to her wishes. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion, with the Rev. Tim Marvil officiating. Donald W. Grundemann Donald W. Grundemann, 74, of Concord, died Monday, September 15, 2008, at his home. Mr. Grundemann was born November 7, 1933, in Albion, to Arthur and Irene (Broxholm) Grundemann. He married Roberta Green February 19, 2000, in Homer. She survives. Mr. Grundemann was self-employed as a farmer all his life. He was a member of Sheridan-Albion Township Fire Board, the Farm Bureau, South Albion Beef Club and South Albion 4-H. He was also a member of Albion Township’s Tax Board of Review. He enjoyed genealogy and hunting, but more than anything else, he enjoyed his family. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Grundemann of Northville; three sons, Jon (Kathy) Grundemann of Albion, Karl Grundemann of Saline and Eric Grundemann of Okemos; a brother, Stanley Grundemann of Concord; and six grandchildren, Jacob, Katie, Wesley, Jack, Henry and Catherine. Sharon K. Marshall Sharon K. Marshall, 63, of Homer, died Sunday, September 21, 2008, at her home. She was born March 9, 1945, in Marshall to Warren W. and Lillian R. Kimball. Her mother survives in Olivet. She married Keith H. Marshall June 26, 1996. He preceded he in death November 12, 2006. Mrs. Marshall was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Litchfield for more than 30 years. She was a member of Litchfield Congregational Church and a 4-H leader. She enjoyed line dancing, camping and especially her children and grandchildren. In addition to her mother, survivors include two sons, William V. (Kimberly) of Coldwater and Gregory (Amy) Zachow of Litchfield; a daughter, Sherri A. Jeffries (Travis Manon) of Bryan, Ohio; three adopted daughters, Kerri Jeffries-Marshall, Ariel Jeffries and Britnee Jeffries-Marshall; a granddaughter who she raised, Nikki O’Dell; two sisters, Denise Winter (Jim Shook) of Coldwater and Judy Colberg of California; four brothers, Joseph (Carol) Kimball of Marshall, Gaylord Kimball of Quincy, Walter Kimball and Michael Kimball, both of Olivet; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, September 25, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Mike Murray officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. October 1, 2008 H. Kevin Holdridge H. Kevin Holdridge, 44, of Albion, died at his home Sunday, September 21, 2008. Mr. Holdridge married Diana D. Stepp June 11, 1999, in Marshall at the United Methodist Church. She survives. Mr. Holdridge was born October 7, 1963, in Jackson, to Atwood Ferren and Carolyn Marcella (Miller) Holdridge. He attended Marshall schools and served in the U.S. Army. He lived in Las Vegas with his father, where they worked together as stonemasons until his father’s death. Mr. Holdridge then returned to the Albion area and has lived there since, where he worked as a sales representative in the cutting tool industry. Mr. Holdridge loved spending time with his son, Andrew. Riding their bicycles and fishing were favorite pastimes. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed the Upper Peninsula. He liked to garden and landscape. He played softball and baseball at the Rice Creek ball park. There he coached Andrew’s baseball team for many years. He also was the assistant coach of Andrew’s team in Marshall. Mr. Holdridge read every day. Florence Lorene Campbell Florence Lorene Campbell, 93, of Litchfield Township, died Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at the Laurels of Coldwater. She was born May 16, 1915, in Calhoun County, to Leo C. and Mina Mae (Juckett) Riker. She married Clive Ernest Campbell December 10, 1932. He preceded her in death in 1985. Survivors include six daughters, Mary (Darrell) Adams of Homer, Lorene (Lee) Slusher of Cambria, Marjorie (Jerry) Lewis of Litchfield, Janice (George) Manzer of Coldwater, Bonnie (Jake) Ward of Osseo and Lila (Rick) McNitt of Bronson; six sons, Marvin (Mary) Campbell of Hillsdale, William Campbell of Alvordton, Ohio, Donald (Deborah) Campbell of Galion, Ohio, and James Campbell, Melvin (Elaine) Campbell and Eugene Campbell, all of Litchfield; 35 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Brenda K. Losey Brenda K. Losey, 57, of Albion, died Thursday, September 25, 2008, at her residence. She was born September 29, 1950, in Albion, to James D. L. and Janice V. (Stancroff) Staley. She married Carlyle “Curt” Losey in Tompkins May 23, 1987, and he survives. Mrs. Losey had been a resident of the Calhoun-Jackson county area all her life. She was a homemaker and loved NASCAR, especially Ryan Newman, and was a huge University of Michigan football fan. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Losey is survived by five daughters, Amy Frederick (friend, Dallas Prater Jr.) of Homer, Pamela (Matthew) Wycoff of Clio, Michelle (Mark) Crippen of Eaton Rapids, April (Joel) VanDouser of Dansville and Carla Losey (fiancè Carl White) of Hanover; two sons, Christopher Dean Frederick of Marenisco and Kevin Dean Frederick of Springport; 14 grandchildren; three sisters, Karen (J.R.) Ryan of Albion, Nancy (Donald) Esterline and Terry Kilbourn, both of Marshall; a brother, Michael Carothers of Jackson. Mrs. Losey was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Barbara Benson and Cynthia Jean Zimmerman; and two brothers, Jerry Staley and Douglas Carothers. Edward Dale Koch Edward Dale Koch, 85, of Homer, died Thursday, September 25, 2008, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. Mr. Koch was born June 17, 1923, in Jackson, to William and Grace (Oldacre) Koch. He married Esther Mason August 29, 1954. She survives. Mr. Koch worked as a molder at Calhoun Foundry for 33 years. He enjoyed fishing, auto racing, baseball and working on cars. He especially enjoyed being a part of the morning coffee club at the Stagecoach Restaurant in Homer. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Koch of Homer and Dianna Koch of Albion; a stepson, Dennis Sloan of Homer; and a sister, Mary Sandusky of Albion. Melissa Ann Russell Melissa “Missy” Ann Russell, 37, of Homer, died Saturday, September 27, 2008. Ms. Russell was born December 3, 1970, to Mark and Darlene (Arnett) Cousins. They survive. She was employed at D.C. Welding in Albion, Mid-American in Jackson, Tenneco in Litchfield, Progressive Dynamics and was a beautician for Touch of Class in Albion. She enjoyed her family and friends. In addition to her parents, survivors include a daughter, Sierra Russell; two sons, Austin and Preston Russell of Homer; a sister, Brandy Cousins-Wellman of Homer; and a grandfather, Otis Cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elizabeth Cousins, and Richard and Alta Arnett. Visitation will be Friday, October 3, from 1-2 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Richard J. Avery Richard J. “Jim” Avery, 81, of Litchfield, died Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. Mr. Avery was born March 5, 1927, in Homer to Melvin and Doris (Ossenheimer) Avery. He was a 1944 graduate of Homer High School. He served with the United States Navy during World War II, then with the Marines during the Korean War. He was a milk hauler for Michigan Milk Producers, owning his own route. He later drove a car hauler, then worked as a machine repairman for a road construction company in Detroit for 20 years. He also worked home construction in Florida, building seawalls, as well as commercial fishing. He married Helen J. Smith October 5, 1946. She survives. Mr. Avery wintered in Florida for 22 years. He collected and restored machinery and farm implements. He was a member of the Homer VFW post and the Litchfield American Legion post. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Michael James (Lynn) Avery of Denham Springs, Louisiana; three grandchildren, James, Kimberly and Adam; two great-grandchildren, Raya and Gavin; his stepmother, Dorothy Avery of Marshall; and a sister, Ruth Ann Keifer of Palo Alto, California. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Avery, and a sister, Betty Chase. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 30, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Chapel in Albion, with the Rev. Margaret Gregg Margaret Gregg, 91, of St. Ignace, died Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey. Mrs. Gregg was born July 10, 1917, in Jackson to Elza and May (Kivell) Conley. She graduated from high school and married Robert Gregg July 7, 1936, in Angola, Indiana, and he survives. The couple resided in Homer until 1978, when they moved to St. Ignace. They owned a laundromat in Homer for several years, and she was the bookkeeper for her husband’s construction business. She was a member of the Mackinac Straits Hospital Auxiliary and helped with Touch of Craft in St. Ignace. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Beverly (Jack) Swope of St. Ignace; a grandson, David (Lisa) Swope of St. Ignace; and two great-grandchildren, Corey and Chelsea. Mrs. Gregg was preceded in death by a son, David in 1991; two brothers, Arthur and Stanley; and two sisters, Leola and Clara. Funeral services were held Monday, September 29, at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace, with the Rev. James Balfour officiating. Visitation was held at J. Nancy L. O’Dell Nancy L. O’Dell, 68, of Albion, formerly of Homer, died Sunday, September 28, 2008, at home under the care of her family and Good Samaritan Hospice. She was born July 28, 1940, to Richard and Hazel (Cornish) Schroeder. She married Ralph “Red” O’Dell January 29, 1985. He preceded her in death in 2007. Mrs. O’Dell worked at Guardian Fiberglass for 15 years, and also helped her husband at O’Dell Grains for several years. She was a member of Crossroads Church in Marshall. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, baking, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and garage sales. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Kennedy and Anna Butler, both of Albion, and Heidi Morgan of Eden, North Carolina; two sons, Douglas (Rosemary) Kennedy of Eden, North Carolina, and Paul Morgan of Florida; four stepdaughters, Rhonda O’Dell of Indiana, Terry Rask of Tennessee, Tina Cole of Tekonsha and Angie Camp of Hillsdale; a stepson, Ralph O’Dell, Jr. of Homer; a sister, Hazel (Les) Bruner of Concord; 24 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. O’Dell was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Ann Schroeder and Rose Wildt; and a son, David Kennedy. Marjorie Mary King Marjorie Mary King, 91, of Litchfield, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. She was born January 20, 1917, in Litchfield, to Ernest and Virgie (Harrier) Wade. She married William King February 14, 1946. He preceded her in death September 27, 1990. Mrs. King graduated from Litchfield High School and was a lifelong Litchfield area resident. She was employed at the Litchfield Post Office for 20 years. She was a member of the local pedro club and the Litchfield Congregational Church. She enjoyed knitting, crossword and picture puzzles, and gardening. Survivors include a sister, Gladys Clay of Shelbyville, Indiana; a niece, Mary (Bert) Armstrong of New Palestine, Indiana; a cousin, Jay Wade of Litchfield; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Clifford and Harold Wade. Private services will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield at a later date. Donna G. DuBois Donna G. DuBois, 85, of Litchfield, died Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Carelink of Jackson. She was born January 19, 1923, in Litchfield, to Clyde and Elizabeth (Juckett) Tasker. She married Arthur DuBois August 7, 1943. He survives. Mrs. DuBois was a homemaker and worked several years at the Litchfield Nursing Centre until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and especially spending time with her family and many grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Robert) Lopez of Osseo; two sons, David DuBois of Osseo and Larry (Bea) DuBois of Berrian Springs; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. October 15, 2008 Loyel Dale Clark Loyel Dale Clark, 84, of Tekonsha, formerly of Homer, died Monday, October 6, 2008, at Marshall Adult Foster Care in Tekonsha. He was born September 13, 1924, in Bronson, to Harry and Zelah (Sowles) Clark. He married Rose Ann Chawlcraft in Angola, Indiana, October 8, 1981. She preceded him in death November 23, 2005. Mr. Clark was a resident of the area for most of his life, and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a machine operator at Acorn Building Components in Quincy for 15 years, retiring in 1988. He is survived by three sons, Loyel Ray Clark of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Garritt Lee Clark of LeHigh Acres, Florida, and Donnie Clark; two daughters, Dale Jane (Johnny) Buchan of Ray, Georgia, and Millie Sabala of Bellflower, California; four grandchildren; and a friend, Shelby Sadger of Tekonsha. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Burial will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements were handled by J. Milo Wesley Farmer, Jr. Milo Wesley Farmer, Jr., 62, of Homer, died Monday, October 6, 2008. He was born December 11, 1945, in Marshall to Milo Farmer, Sr. and Verna (Amsler) Farmer. He was married to Edna Faye (Fannin) Farmer for 45 years. She survives. Mr. Farmer was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County. He loved hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, auto racing and gunsmithing. He was a true patriot and loved and supported his country. He enjoyed spending time with his family and telling stories about war history and life experiences. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter Mary V. Hoffman and her fiancé, David Bush, both of Portage; two sons, Miles V. Farmer of Homer and Michael V. (Kerri) Farmer of Tekonsha; seven grandchildren, Kyle Hall, Corey Hall, Anthony Farmer, Caroline Farmer, Makenzie Farmer, Levi Farmer and Gabriel Farmer; a great grandchild, Aidan Hall; two sisters, Jeanette Bushong and Cheryl Fox; and a brother, Dennis Farmer. Harley H. Worthington Harley H. Worthington, 91, of Jackson, died at home Wednesday, October 8, 2008. He was born in Farmer Center, Defiance County, Ohio, to Howard and Cora (Harter) Worthington. He was married to Wanda (Nash) Worthington for 41 years, and she survives. Mr. Worthington was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Timber Wolves. He fought in Germany where he earned two Bronze Stars. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3672 in Albion and Retirees Local 474, also in Albion, where he served for several years as vice chairman. Mr. Worthington volunteered for the American Heart Association and was an avid walker - having walked more than 22,000 miles in is lifetime at Jackson Crossing. He loved to fish for bluegills and work crossword puzzles. He will be especially missed by his friends at Target. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jeanne (Edward) Jones of Suttons Bay; a son, James (Mary) Worthington of Homer; three stepchildren, Phillip (Claudia) Bannister and Cherrine (Jeffrey) Anderson, both of Jackson, and Marty (Walt) Klepper of Dowling; a daughter-in-law, Sherie Bannister of Jackson; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many close friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Murray, and four brothers, Lewis, Herb, Russell and Earl. October 22, 2008 Frank H. Manke Frank H. Manke, 63, of Homer, died Friday, October 17, 2008, at the home of his son. Mr. Manke was born August 18, 1945, in Concord to Lloyd Earnest and Amelia (Wagner) Manke. He married Janis Kabel in Albion November 27, 1976. She preceded him in death January 2, 2001. Mr. Manke served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He joined VFW Carrick-Jarosz Post #9411 in Homer, where he had been active for 35 years. He was selected post commander in 1989-1990, and this year marked his 13th term at that position. In 2002-2003 became the first Homer VFW member to serve as district commander. He also served as the Department of Michigan VFW Cancer Director for several years. In 2007-2008, he was named All State Commander. His other memberships included Homer Masonic Temple Humanity Lodge #29, Homer FFA Alumni and American Legion Post #225. Mr. Manke also served on the board of directors for American One Federal Credit Union, and on the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners Planning Committee. He was very active in Clarendon Township, serving as constable from 1970-1974. He was a township trustee from 1980-2003, at which time he was elected township supervisor, an office which he continued to hold until his death. He served on the fire boards for Homer and Tekonsha for numerous years. Mr. Manke retired from Union Steel Products in Albion, with 31 years of service, and Miller Brothers Manufacturing in Homer, with 10 years of service. He enjoyed deer hunting and going to garage sales. He could be found every morning at a local restaurant in Homer drinking coffee and catching up on the town activities. Survivors include a son, Jason (Sara) Manke of Homer; three sisters, Janet (Leo) Diewald of Portage, Phyllis Owen of Jackson, and Carol (Doug) Vogel of Albion; a sister-in-law, Hattie Manke of Jackson; three brothers, Pete (Helen) Manke of Palm Harbor, Florida, George (Dee) Manke of Homer, and Terry Manke of Hazel Green, Alabama; a brother-in-law, Dennis (Anne) Kabel of Ferndale; and several nieces and nephews In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Manke; and a brother, Lloyd Manke. Harold Ferry Harold Ferry, 60, of Litchfield died Wednesday, October 15, 2008, in Litchfield. Mr. Ferry was born January 29, 1948, in Coldwater, to Clarence and Mildred (VanPatten) Ferry. He married Marcia Branstetter September 6, 1969, and she survives in Litchfield. Mr. Ferry was a graduate of Litchfield High School and Michigan State University and remained a true “Sparty” fan. He was a lifelong dairy farmer in the Litchfield area. Mr. Ferry enjoyed spending time with his family, skiing, backpacking and running cross country. He was a member of the Litchfield Rotary Club, Hillsdale County ISD Board, Michigan Milk Producers Association, Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Farm Bureau, Litchfield Farmer’s Club, Litchfield Township Zoning Board, past member of the Litchfield School Board, a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and very active in the Litchfield United Methodist Church. He was very generous and always gave to those in need. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Laura Ferry of Kalamazoo; a son, Scott Ferry and fiancée Alissa of Northville; a sister, Jacqulyn Kessler, of Daytona Beach, Florida; and two brothers, Ronald (Betty) Ferry of Litchfield and Alton (Kay) Ferry of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Lisa Kessler. He was born February 11, 1946, in Albion, to Donald A. and Ruth Hane (Trine) Ralston, Sr. Ralston was a machine operator for Eaton Corporation in Marshall for 35 years. He was a member of the Cooks Prairie Baptist Church. He enjoyed games of chance, traveling, camping and hunting. In addition to his parents, survivors include a son, Steve Wilson of Homer; a sister, Connie Montgomery of Reynoldsberg, Ohio; two brothers, Lloyd Mapes of Albion and David Ralston of Holiday, Florida; and six grandchildren. Billie Elaine Weston A memorial service for Billie Elaine Weston will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 25, at Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski. Mrs. Weston, 61, died May 30, 2008, in Tucson, Arizona. She was born April 29, 1947 to June Annette Smith and Bill E. Workman in Charleston, South, Carolina, and spent her youth in Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan. She married Raymond Weston in Indiana October 24, 1964, and he survives. They resided in Michigan until 1981, when they moved to Tucson. Mrs. Weston loved spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, and making crafts and jewelry. Mrs. Weston also enjoyed working for the Coronado National Forest Service and the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center and Museum. Mr. and Mrs. Weston had previously worked at various Arizona national parks as campground hosts, where they enjoyed meeting the campers who would come to enjoy the beautiful scenery. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Weston is survived by a son, Raymond Neil Weston of Tucson; a daughter, Crystal Weston of Phoenix; five grandchildren, Lucas, Isabel, Summer, Danielle and Conner; a sister, Melinda Williams of Homer; a brother, Jeff Childers of Florida; an aunt, Betty Fisher of Kentucky Lake, Kentucky; two sisters-in-law, Velma J. Weston, of Marshall and Roxann Tesch of Concord; and many nieces and nephews.
Howard E. Hunter Howard E. Hunter, 103, longtime Lansing area resident, formerly of Homer, died at his home Friday, September 26, 2008. He was born May 6, 1905, in Homer, to Albert Hunter and Ida Evans. He graduated in 1928 from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) with a degree in civil engineering. While in school he participated in ROTC and rose to the rank of major in the Army Air Corps. He volunteered for service in World War II. Mr. Hunter was a partner in the Lansing-based Warren Holmes architectural firm where he supervised the building of many schools in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois. In his retirement, he and his wife Gladys owned Hunters Orchard, which they operated for more than 50 years. A member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1917, he had served as an elder, a trustee, a church school teacher and a Sunday school superintendent. He acted on his concern for the environment in several ways, including serving on the Grand River Watershed Commission. He was well known for his remarkable memory, kindness, character and enthusiasm for life. Survivors include a daughter, Judy (Howard) Hedlund; two sons, Thomas (Nancy) Hunter and Stanley (Mary) Hunter; seven grandchildren, Howard “Howdy” Hedlund, Sherri Hedlund Klaers, Paul Hedlund, Barb Hunter Legris, Cindy Hunter Morgan, Ian Hunter and Ellen Hunter; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. His wife, parents and two sisters preceded him in death. A celebration of his life was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lansing, Wednesday, October 1. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery, Delta Mills. Peters and Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Sanders was born March 8, 1957, in Angola, Indiana, to Robert F. and Gloria Arlene (Wilbur) Birchfield. She married Larry Ray Sanders in May of 1975, and he survives. She worked at Hi-Lex in Litchfield and Mark 1 in Jonesville. She previously worked at McDonald’s in Albion. She enjoyed spending time with her family, karaoke, crocheting and hunting for mushrooms. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Deanna Locke, Tina (Dallas) Bumpus and Lynette Sanders, all of Litchfield; a son, Jason Sanders of Litchfield; her mother, Gloria A. Birchfield, of Litchfield; two brothers, Charlie Birchfield of Kansas City, Missouri, and Aaron Birchfield of Texas and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father. Myrna J. FitzGerald Myrna J. FitzGerald, 73, of West Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Homer, died Friday, October 31, 2008. She was born to Lisle and Mildred (Hart) Beck January 1, 1935. Mrs. FitzGerald worked as a volunteer for Homer Schools with the special education students, and at Gherig’s Dime Store in Homer for many years. Mrs. FitzGerald was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of West Palm Beach. She is survived by her husband John J. FitzGerald; two daughters, Denise Judy of Shelby Township and Patricia (Kent) Tackett of Homer; six grandchildren, Scott (Abigail) Judy, Brad Judy, Kyle Judy, Kirk (Tammy) Tackett, Michael Tackett, Trisha (Travis) Winder; two great grandchildren; and many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, stepchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. November 12, 2008 Patricia Ann Lewis Patricia Ann Lewis, 73, of Litchfield Township, died Thursday, November 6, 2008, at home. Mrs. Lewis was born March 17, 1935, in Monroe, to Wilfred and Doris (Nadeau) Baker, Sr. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1952. She married Richard S. Lewis July 31, 1954. He preceded her in death in 2002. Mrs. Lewis had been an active member in the Litchfield Garden Club, and also belonged to the Ypsilanti Moose Lodge. Her hobbies included bowling, travelling and gardening. Survivors include four daughters, Cindy Pepper of Litchfield, Doris (John) VanderMeulen of Saline, Laura (Randy) Cross of Carleton and Catherine (William) Amato of Flat Rock; a son, Richard (Jacqueline) Lewis of Waterford; three sisters, Geraline (Luther) Hicks of Houghton Lake, Karen Sancraint of Flint and Michele Tanner of Flat Rock; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by a son, Steven Lewis, and a brother, Wilfred Baker. November 27, 2008 James Lewis “Peep” Mulkey James Lewis “Peep” Mulkey, 61, of Homer, died Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at his home. Mr. Mulkey was born May 18, 1947, in Kenvir, Kentucky, to Hubert and Mattie (Norton) Mulkey. He married Sandra O’Dell in 1965. She survives. He was self-employed as a licensed contractor and was a welder. He also worked at Meem & Peep Country Market in Albion, as well as Starr Commonwealth for six years. At one time, he owned and operated Mulkey Adult Foster Care. Mr. Mulkey was a former member of Grace Free Will Baptist Church in Albion. He enjoyed fishing and was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Kimberly (Derick) Sprandel of Springfield; four sons, James (Jodi) Mulkey, Jr., Timothy (Mary) Mulkey and Phillip Sherwood, all of Homer, and Kyle Mulkey of Mattawan; two sisters, Sammie (Edgar) Pratt of Homer and Betty (Ed) Saylor of Lancaster, Ohio; a brother, Vernon ‘Ed’ Mulkey of Albion; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Henry D. Powers Henry D. Powers, 89, of Homer, died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Allegiance Hospital in Jackson. Mr. Powers was born March 31, 1919, in Albion Township, to John C. and Ellen “Nellie” (Gilson) Powers. He married Harriet Louise Howe March 21, 1948, in Homer. She survives. Mr. Powers was a lifelong resident of this area and a 1936 graduate of Albion Washington Gardener High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served as a machinist, serving upon several of the Navy’s diesel submarines. After returning from the military, Mr. Powers engaged in farming for many years until turning his farming operation over to his son, John H. Powers. He had also been employed by Hayes-Albion Foundry for 15 years, retiring in 1985. He was a former member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association and the Michigan Nut Growers Association. His family remembers him as a very hard worker and stated that “Henry’s hobby was hard work.” He enjoyed cutting wood and was an accomplished welder. He also enjoyed collecting walnuts. In addition to his wife, Mr. Powers is survived by four daughters, Janet M. (James) Anderson of Manistee, and Martha L. (Larry) Robinson, Karen E. (Victor) Face and Teresa (Jess) Baylis, all of Homer; two sons, John H. (Kathie) Powers of Homer and Robert H. (Sharon) Powers of St. Peters, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean (Robert) Ballentine; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Powers. Mr. Powers was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Powers, and a sister, Elizabeth Powers. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life was held Monday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with the Rev. Tom Merrick officiating. Interment followed in West Eckford Cemetery. Robert Keith Fuller Robert Keith Fuller, 70, of Litchfield Township, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at his home. Mr. Fuller was born April 23, 1938, in Sauk County, Wisconsin, to Lloyd and Gladys (Snyder) Fuller. He married Pearl Pudil June 5, 1973. She survives. Mr. Fuller was a truck driver and enjoyed tinkering in his garage. He also loved frequent dining at Spangler’s Hilltop Restaurant in Jonesville. In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven daughters, Bonnie of Wisconsin, Sherry Pudil of Montgomery, Tracy (Todd) Butcher of Quincy, Linda Taber of Montgomery, Jodie Mullins of Coldwater, Sheila Strait of North Adams and Yvonne Copus of Reedsburg, Wisconsin; a son, Keith Fuller of Wisconsin; two sisters, Ethel Mobley and Mary GoBell, both of Reedsburg; a brother Lloyd Fuller, Jr., of Baraboo, Wisconsin; numerous grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Hayslip; and a grandson, Andrew. There will be no visitation or service. Arrangements were handled by George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Vernon T. Kollar Vernon T. Kollar, 73, of Homer, died Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. Mr. Kollar was born April 5, 1935, in Ransom Township, to Earl Arthur and Blanche (Stinger) Kollar. He married Mary Tesch November 8, 1952, in Elkhart, Indiana. She survives. Mr. Kollar was a 1971 graduate of Springport High School, graduating with his daughter. He held a private pilot’s license. He loved to hunt, and was an avid trapshooter. He was a life member of the M.T.A. and the A.T.A., and owned and operated Woodland Gun Shop as a gunsmith. He worked at Corning Glass in Albion for 24 years, and was a supervisor Klein Tool in Jonesville for 17 years. In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Terry (Dale) Penfield and Cynthia (Steven) Martin, both of Leslie, Linda Vanous of Hillsdale and Veronica Kollar of Montgomery; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Michael and Jeremy Daglow; one great-great-granddaughter, Jennifer Murphy; five half sisters, his parents; and his stepfather John Cook. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 9, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Dr. Donald O. Phillips officiating.
Meta Louise (Brainard) Gilg Meta Louise (Brainard) Gilg, 91, of Marshall, died Friday, December 5, 2008. Mrs. Gilg was born March 8, 1917, in Albion, to Fern and Mildred (Bliss) Brainard She was a life-long resident of the Albion/Marshall area. She married Claude W. Lockwood in 1933, and later married Elson Tanner in 1951. He preceded her in death in 1968. She then married Erich Gilg in 1971. He preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Gilg was a member of the Homer Bowling Association for 17 years, serving as president for one term. Survivors include three daughters, Beverly (George Tolbert) Williams of Bristow, Oklahoma, Marjorie (Frank) Seis of Waupaca, Wisconsin, and Nancy (Duane) Krause of Henderson, Nevada; two stepdaughters, Karol (Wayne) Murphy of Lansing and Brenda (Gene) Cornish of Albion; a stepson, Roger (Carolyn) Gilg of Albion; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Kent Schultz. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 10, at 11 a.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Steve Shafe officiating. Elva Marie Fast Elva Marie Fast, 84, of Coldwater, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, in Marshall. Mrs. Fast was born April 14, 1924, in Albion Township, to George and Louise (Hatch) Rising. She graduated from Homer High School in 1943. She married Ivan L. Fast August 29, 1943, in Homer. He preceded her in death August 17, 2008. The couple lived in Albion until 1946, farmed in Maple Grove until 1951, then moved to their farm in Clarendon Township, where they farmed for 38 years. For 25 of those years, they ran a trucking, grain, fertilizer and seed business. After moving to Morrison Lake near Coldwater in 1989, the couple attended the Girard United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Larry (LeAnn) Fast of Paradise, Texas, and Raymond (Brenda) Fast of Coldwater; a daughter, Janyth (Gus) Evans of Homer; two grandson; three granddaughters; five great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and two brothers-in-law, Vernon (Glenna) Fast of Marshall and Marion (Sara) Fast of Longmont, Colorado. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Kevin Fast; five sisters, Helen (Floyd) Belt, Margaret (Wilford) Lawrence, Harriet (Paul) Rowland, Kathryn (Stan) Orwig and Eva (Don) Ambler; and three brothers, Billy Rising, Andrew (Dorothy) Rising and Charles (Barbara) Rising. Lillian M. Maurer Lillian M. Maurer, 81, of Jackson, formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Countryside Care Center in Jackson. Mrs. Maurer was born May 4, 1927, in Jackson County, to Everett and Carrie (Peterson) Simonds. She married Roy M. Maurer June 12, 1947. He preceded her in death May 10, 1978. Mrs. Maurer worked in retail at Heiney Shoe Store and Allen’s Department Store, both in Homer. She was a member of T.O.P.S., and treasurer of the Homer Senior Center. She enjoyed bingo and coffee clubs. She especially enjoyed her family. Survivors include three sons, Barry (Wendy) Maurer of Homer, Kent (Laura) Maurer of Jackson and Bill (Barb) Maurer of Marshall; a sister, Velma Reeder of Franklin, Virginia; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren: and several nieces and nephews. Betty J. Morse Betty J. Morse, 81, of Wakarusa, Indiana, and former Homer resident for more than 50 years, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, in Elkhart, Indiana, due to complications from Alzheimer’s. Mrs. Morse was born November 27, 1927, in Bad Axe, to John and Jean (McKnight) Campbell. She married Raymond A. Morse June 18, 1947, in Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death January 24, 1993. The couple moved to Homer in 1960. For 30 years they owned and operated the former Homer Pharmacy, which is now Hopps Colonial Pharmacy. After raising their four children, Mrs. Morse worked as an office nurse and also as business manager for several medical practices in the Albion and Marshall areas. She served as choir director at Homer Presbyterian Church for many years, and in her later years she served on the board of the Community House, for which she was named Volunteer of the Year in 2003. She enjoyed sewing, playing the organ and wall papering. Most of all, she enjoyed rising schnauzers. Mrs. Morse is survived by two daughters, Julie Whalen of Parma and Barbara (Greg) Black of Iowa City, Iowa; two sons, David (Mary Ellen Nygren) Morse of Howell and Thomas (Shelby) Morse of Elkhart, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Alexander and Elizabeth Morse, Andrew Black, Whitney (Ben) Fraga, Bayley (Josef) Hannah, Kelsey Morse and Hannah Morse; and a great-grandchild, Eleanor Ray Fraga. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Morse was preceded in death by a brother, James Campbell. A graveside service was held Friday, December 19, at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Jesse R. Bryant Jesse R. Bryant, 60, of Homer, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born February 29, 1948, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to Oliver and Saide Bryant. He married Cibble J. Garrett June 19, 1976. She survives. Mr. Bryant worked at Sharps Evergreen Nursery for more than 20 years, and had previously drilled water wells in Ohio. He enjoyed gambling, fishing, yard work and all kinds of sports. Most of all, Mr. Bryant loved and enjoyed his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Jennifer (Jake) Blatter of Homer and Angie (Jason) Scott of Ohio; a son J.R. (Angie) Bryant of Homer; six sisters Patty Lonsbury, Debbie Lawley, Charlotte McConnell, Carolyn Johnson and Linda Fay Naugle, all of Ohio, and Brenda Collins of Kentucky; three brothers, Ricky Bryant of Albion, Donald Bryant of Homer and Danny Bryant of Kentucky; and eight grandchildren. Mary V. Bailey Mary V. Bailey, 73, of Homer died Friday, December 19, 2008, at her residence. She was born October 9, 1935, in Albion, to Herbert W. and Viola (Davis) Bailey. She was self-employed as a housekeeper. Ms. Bailey attended the Albion Free Methodist Church. She liked watching hockey and baseball. She enjoyed spending time with her family and the holidays. She was very giving of her time. Survivors include two sisters, Sharon Khuling of Palestine, Texas, and Lorna Schavers of Muskegon; two brothers, Dale Bailey and Lyle Bailey of Texas; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephew. Arthur W. King Arthur W. King, 64, of Litchfield, died Sunday, December 21, 2008, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. King was born March 23, 1944, in Calhoun County, to Arthur B. and Cleo G. (Chamberlain) King. He was a 1962 graduate of Litchfield High School. He served in the U.S. Navy, and was a truck driver for independent trucking companies. He was an avid reader and enjoyed working on cars. He married Pamela Hunnaman February 8, 1969. She survives in Litchfield. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter Leslie (Matthew) Olmstead of Coldwater; a son, Matthew King of Brownstown; two grandchildren, Drew King and Griffen Olmstead, both of Litchfield; his mother, Cleo G. King of Litchfield; two brothers, Loren E. King of Litchfield and Philip (Sue) King of Ann Arbor; and a brother-in-law, Paul Hayward of Litchfield. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Debra Hayward.
