Armed Litchfield man fatally shot by county officers by Darby Cornelius An armed Litchfield man was fatally shot Sunday at approximately 3 a.m. at 9400 Herring Road, following a confrontation with law enforcement officers. Max J. Seely, 22, was initially treated by the Reading Emergency Unit and later taken to the Hillsdale Community Health Center, then transferred by air to Borgess Hospital where he was taken into surgery and later pronounced dead. According to Hillsdale County Sheriff Stan W. Burchardt, Seely threatened to kill himself or any police officer, before pointing a shotgun directly at officers, who responded by shooting the armed suspect to reduce the possibility of injury or death to police officers or the public. Hillsdale County 911 received a call Sunday at approximately 2:39 a.m. from a distraught female who told dispatchers a male subject at her Litchfield Township residence was carrying around a gun stating he was going to kill himself or the police. 911 immediately dispatched law enforcement officers to the Herring Road residence, with assistance provided by the Litchfield Police Department. Officers arrived on the scene at 2:49 a.m., and brought the woman who called 911 out of the residence and into a patrol car where she was questioned about the events. Officers were told the male subject who lived at the residence was pacing in and out of the house for some time and was threatening to kill himself or any police officer. According to the sheriff’s report, “Shortly after the female fled from the residence and went with police, the armed suspect walked outside and began waving a shotgun in the air directly in front of the law enforcement officers and shouted profanity and vulgar slurs. On numerous occasions, the deputies attempted to end the armed subject’s suicidal attempt and armed standoff by asking the suspect to peacefully put the gun down, allowing them to talk and that the Sheriff’s Office could get him some professional help. The armed suspect refused to comply with any request while continuing to pace outside and quickly brought his firearm up in his arms, at which time he began to point it at the police officers.” The deputies verbally commanded him to put the weapon down, but he did not comply and continued pointing it directly at officers. At that time deputies fired the shots that eventually ended his life. In compliance with Sheriff’s Office policy regarding on-duty shootings involving deputies, the incident and investigation was immediately turned over to the Michigan State Police for a detailed investigation, comprehensive follow-up and crime scene investigation. Crime scene technicians were at the scene, and conducted an autopsy Monday. Officers’ weapons were taken to the Lansing crime lab. Detective Sergeant Cyndi Gochanour of the Michigan State Police - Jonesville Post was in charge of the investigation. The three deputies who were involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.
