Alvin Charles Knuth
Alvin Charles Knuth, 83, of Homer, passed away Thursday, December  27,  2003,  at Tendercare in Albion.
He was born December 31, 1919, in Albion Township, to William  August  and  Ida Henrietta (Strey) Knuth.
Mr. Knuth married Vera Clark August 19, 1950. She survives.
Mr. Knuth was a lifetime dairy farmer, retiring in 1998. In the 1940s he had the top dairy herd in the State of Michigan. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Michigan Milk Producers and St. Paul  Lutheran  Church.  He enjoyed sports, especially Tiger baseball.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sarah Knuth of Spring Lake and Eunice (Keith) Neubauer of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two sons, Larry (Evelyn) Knuth of Homer and Ed (Beth) Knuth of Wisconsin; a sister, Wilma (Jim) McCormick of Arizona; a sister-in-law, Betty Knuth of Homer; and four grandchildren, David Knuth and Derek, Megan and Amber Neubauer.
He was preceded in death by two  brothers, Raymond and Ernest, and four sisters, Rita Miller, Esther Schultz, Hilda Capps and Thelma Knuth.
A memorial service was held Saturday, January 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Albion, with the Rev. James Waddell officiating. Interment followed at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Mildred L. Wilson
Mildred L. Wilson, 92, formerly of Albion and Homer, died Monday, December 29, 2003, at her home in Marshall.
She was born December 12, 1911, in Finley, Ohio, to Frank and Verna (Schaberg) Foley.
She married Howard Miller October 24, 1934, and he preceded her in death in April 1952. She married Ben Wilson, Sr. on February 2, 1966, and he preceded her in death in 1986.
Mrs. Wilson was employed by Dr. Nelson as a receptionist for many years, worked for Bullens Department Store, Home Laundry and helped her husband on the family farm.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of Albion and Homer Presbyterian Church, Mary Martha Circle and was a 4-H leader for several years. She enjoyed crafts, gardening and especially her grandchildren. She was the 2003 Calhoun County Senior Fair Queen.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Pat (John) Nauman of Florida; two sons, Bruce (Chris) Miller  and  Phil  (Louanna) Miller, both of Homer; two stepsons, Ben (Lois) Wilson of Con-cord and Jack (Joanne) Wilson  of Aurora  Grande, California; two sisters, Marie Allman of Battle Creek and Shirley Powers of Concord; two sisters-in-law, Olive Foley of Homer and Julian Miller of Albion; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Phayon Foley and Clifford Foley, and a granddaughter, Mary Wilson.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 5, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with Rick Rockwell officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer

Philip J. Harrell
Philip J. Harrell, 80, of Litchfield, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at home. He was born September 8, 1923, in Hanover Township, to Harvey and Hazel (Sheren) Harrell.
Mr. Harrell served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Tenneco Automotive, Division of Walker Manufacturing Co., Jackson. He enjoyed dairy farming, raising terriers, pony pulls and he belonged to the Crooked River Leather Stretchers.
He is survived by a daughter, Ruth McMullen of Litchfield; a son, Roger Harrell of Jackson; four sisters; two brothers; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Harrell was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield. Interment followed in Mosherville Cemetery. 

Robert Terry Wolfe
Robert Terry Wolfe, 59, of Quincy, died Monday, January 5, 2004, at home. He was born September 21, 1944, in Homer, to Robert E. and June M. (Adams) Wolfe, and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1962.
Mr. Wolfe married Carenda Sawdey July 28, 1983. She survives.
Mr. Wolfe served in the U.S. Navy and belonged to the Quincy American Legion, Coldwater Eagles Lodge #1907, Fremont, Indiana, Moose Lodge and the 40 and 8 Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children at home, Shawn and Stephanie Wolfe; three daughters by previous marriages; and two sisters, Patricia Clement of Saginaw and Doreen Smith of Atlanta, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with interment following in the Allen Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. 
Memorial contributions are suggested to the family or Hospice of Branch County.

Robert W. Poynter
Robert W. Poynter, 89, of Marshall, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital  in Marshall after being stricken at his home.
Mr. Poynter was born March 7, 1914, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Ed and Mary (Cecil) Poynter. He had been employed by Clark Equipment in Jackson for 30 years working in the tool cage. He also engaged in farming and had an egg route buying eggs from area farmers and selling them to grocery stores and dairies, including Polly's.
Mr. Poynter was a member of Clark's retirees club. He was a sport enthusiast and enjoyed listening and watching sports on the radio and television, many times at the same time. He loved auto racing and in his youth had raced cars at many area tracks. He enjoyed flower gardening and loved to grow irises and give them away to friends.
He married Dorotha Wirebaugh in 1935, and she preceded him in death in 1971. On August 27, 1971, he married Viola M. (Sommer) Maples Kennedy. She preceded him in death December 31, 2003.
He is survived by three daughters, Roberta Steves of Scottsdale, Arizona, Diana Tremain of Parma and Geneva Whaley of Tucson, Arizona; a son, Lysander "Sandy" Maples of Marshall; two grandchildren, Scott and Rachelle Bronson; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several step grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Poynter.
Services to celebrate his life were held Thursday, January 8, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson.

Eva Raser Hakes
Eva Raser Hakes, 93, of Concord, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Coldwater Community Health Center in Coldwater. She was born August 29, 1910, in Concord, to Minnie (McKenzie) and Bowman Bert Raser.
She married Carl M. Hakes, Sr., August 25, 1928, in Concord, and he preceded her in death September 30, 1999.
Mrs. Hakes was a resident of the area all her life. She was a 1927 graduate of Concord High School and attended Michigan Normal School in Ypsilanti, receiving her certificate to teach at one room schools. She raised seven children, then received her B.S. degree from Hillsdale College in home economics. She received her Masters of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University, then taught for 20 years at the one room school as a substitute in Cambria Township (Frenchs Corners), Potter School, Fisher Corner, Mann School, Mason School and Butters School, Jonesville Schools, Amish School for one year, Hanover-Horton Elementary School as a fifth grade teacher, retiring from Hanover-Horton.
Mrs. Hakes was a member of many clubs and organizations, along with being a Sunday school teacher and a lifelong member of Concord Universalist Church. She was a member of Concord Heritage Association, a former member of Campfire Girls and 4-H Club for seven years, 4-H leader in Jackson and Hillsdale County for 43 years, a member of Willing Workers of Pulaski, a Trustee on Hubbard Museum Foundation Board and a member of the Home Nursing Club.
She is survived by two sons, Carl (Judy) Hakes II of Onondaga and Daniel (Kathy) Hakes of Manchester; four daughters, Dr. Judith Hakes of San Angelo, Texas, Edith (Stanley) Chapman of Mosherville, Trinka Hakes (Sandy) Noble of Bernardsville, New Jersey, and Eva Martin of Hillsdale; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ivah Raser Curle of Grand Blanc.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Howard, and two sisters, Kate Nobles and Ruth Winchell.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hubbard Memorial Museum Foundation, Concord Heritage Association or Eva Hakes Scholarship Fund c/o Hillsdale Community Foundation.
A funeral service was held Saturday, January 10,at 2 p.m. at the Concord Universalist Church, with John Kinney and the Rev. Scott Scheel officiating. Interment followed at Fisher Cemetery in Homer.
Arrangements were handled by the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.  

Helen Seidel
Helen Seidel, 101, of Ogden, Utah, formerly of Litchfield, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, in Ogden.
Mrs. Seidel was born December 21, 1902, in Los Angeles, to Mae E. and William Jay Lowe. They soon moved to Litchfield, where she attended public schools and graduated in 1921. 
She married Marion A. Porcupile in 1923. After her retirement, she married Anthony Seidel. The couple spent 17 years in Florida until his death in 1993. She then moved to Utah to be with her family.
Mrs. Seidel received her teaching certificate from Hills-dale College Conservatory of Music in 1923. She taught in Litchfield and Flint. She may be remembered as one of the "telephone girls" at Litchfield Mutual Telephone Company.
Mrs. Siedel was a member of the Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was an active member of the Pythhian Sister's and joined the Rebekah IOOF Lodge, where she served as state assembly musician in 1944.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Tittle of Ogden; two grandsons Jay (Mary) Hawley of Ogden, and Marc (Connie) Hawley of Roy, Utah; two great-grandchildren, Charles and Elizabeth Hawley; four great-great-grandchildren, Icalynn, Ian Jr., Eric and Tyler; five sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fogel of Litchfield, Cleita Lowe of Hudson, Florida, Shirley Seidel and Maxine Seidel, both  of Flint, and Loretta Bero of Gardena, California, and a brother-in-law, Vincent Seidel of Flint; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Lowe; and a great-grandson, Ian Hawley.
Memorial services were held in Ogden and graveside services will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield at a later date.

David Lee Ingraham
David Lee Ingraham, 46, went home to be with his heavenly father January 12, 2004, in the loving care of his family after two brave and lengthy battles with cancer. He was born to Clifford and Stella (Wood) Ingraham January 25, 1957, in Albion.
Mr. Ingraham married his best friend and soul mate Mary Elmore September 17, 1983. She survives.
Mr. Ingraham attended Homer schools and graduated in 1975. He went on to get a Metaleical degree from Kellogg Community College. He worked as a lab technician at Harvard Industries until 1992; he then went to Mac Steel of Jackson as a lab technician until his illness in July 2002. 
His talents were many, as he loved to play guitar, sports, music, remodel homes, not to mention his dedication as a fan to the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. His family would say his greatest talents were his love for his wife, children and grandsons. They would describe him as a person who never met a stranger.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ingraham is survived by three daughters, Monica Nantz, and Danielle and Samantha Ingraham, all of Homer; two sons, Michael Nantz and Matthew Ingraham, both of Homer; his mother, Stella Ingraham of Homer; a brother, Bob (Imogene) Ingraham of Eaton Rapids; a sister, Bonnie (Jim) Fogel of Spring Lake; two grandsons, Joshua Michael and Zachary Andrew Nantz, both of Homer; 10 nieces and nephews; 17 great nieces and nephews; and two women he considered angels, Mary Jane Kimbal and Elnona Cary, both of Jackson.
His father preceded him in death August 3, 1976.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 16, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Ron Hackworth officiating.

Darleen L. Pierce
Darleen L. Pierce, 95, of Homer, died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born May 20, 1908, in Spring Arbor Township, to Henry William and Flossie (Hicks) Brigham.
She married Nelson W. Pierce December 25, 1925, in Concord Township. He preceded her in death in 1967.
Mrs. Pierce lived most of her life in the Concord-Homer area. She was a 1925 Concord High School graduate and valedictorian. She owned and operated the Concord Lunch Restaurant for 20 years, selling the restaurant in 1971. She came to Homer in 1972. She was active in the Foster Grandparent program at Homer Elementary School for more than 23 years. She also was a wallpaper hanger in Albion, formerly employed at Union Steel, a cook at Hamburger Haven of Albion, and worked on the family farm. She loved to cook.
She is survived by two sons, Donald (Barbara) Pierce of Olivet and Dale (Kay) Pierce of Plummer, Idaho; two daughters, Prudence (Gerald) Bilaski of Concord and Sharon (William) Loveless of Litchfield; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Pierce; two daughters, Joyce Lyle and Jeanette Castello; three brothers, William, Jesse and Cecil Brigham.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Helen Lucile Wolfinger
Helen Lucile Wolfinger, 95, of Litchfield, went to be with the Lord Monday, January 19, 2004. She was born April 11, 1908, in Reading Township, to Rudolph and Ottie (Murray) Eichler.
She married Weld Wolfinger on December 12, 1931, and he preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Wolfinger attended Litchfield schools and Fort Wayne International Business School. After graduation, she worked for Simpson Ely in Litchfield.
She and her husband were owners of Wolfingers' Hardware in Litchfield. She was a life member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church and an active member of the United Methodist Women. 
As a very loving, caring wife, mother and homemaker, she leaves behind three children, Marlene (Jacob) Visser of Lansing, Elaine (Warren) Neuberger of Danbury, Connecticut, and Harold (Louise) Wolfinger of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three grandchildren and two brothers, Marvin and Wendell Eichler.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 22, at the Litchfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Thompson officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County or the Litchfield United Methodist Church.

Loraine S. "Shirley" Sliger
Loraine S. "Shirley" Sliger, 80, of Homer, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born August 7, 1923, in Albion, to Roy G. and Grace E. (Loomis) Moore. 
She married Edward Sliger in 1946, in Battle Creek, and he preceded her in death in 1962.
Mrs. Sliger was a lifelong resident of the Calhoun County area, living in Battle Creek, Albion and Homer. She graduated from Albion High School in 1941. 
She worked various jobs over her lifetime, including a courier for a bank in Battle Creek, a welder (during WWII) for Service Caster in Albion and she worked as a certified nurses assistant at the Ft. Custer State Home for many years.
Mrs. Sliger enjoyed various hobbies and activities, including ceramics, watching TV, socializing at the Knife and Fork Restaurant in Homer and spending time with her family (specifically her grandson, his wife and their children).
She is survived by one grandson, Deric (Billie) Sliger of Kalamazoo; two great-grandchildren, Crystal Sliger and Deric Sliger Jr. of Kalamazoo; and two brothers, Richard (Bernadine) Moore of Homer and Edwin Moore of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sliger was preceded in death by a son, Kim Edward Sliger in 2003; a brother, Donald Moore in 1950; and two sisters, Marion Boyce in 1976 and Sandra Watson in 1984.
Visitation was Tuesday, January 27, from 1-9 p.m. at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. The family was present to receive visitors from 2-4 p.m. ant 6-8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating her life will take place today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Fr. Brinkmoeller officiating. 
Interment will follow at Reese Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Norine G. Brooks
Norine G. Brooks, 86, of Homer, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Maplewood of Marshall. She was born November 15, 1917, in Homer, to Walter and Enola (Thompson) Fogel. 
She married Paul Brooks August 19, 1939. He survives. 
Mrs. Brooks was a homemaker all her life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Homer and enjoyed reading, playing bridge, having coffee with her friends in the morning and her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Dennis (Carol Ann) Brooks of Portage, Stephen (Carol Ann) Brooks of Battle Creek and Craig (Teresa) Brooks of Battle Creek; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Ray and George Fogel.
A funeral service was held Monday, January 26, 2004, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Marion L. "Tuffy" Blonde
Marion L. "Tuffy" Blonde, 74, of Litchfield, died Monday, January 19, 2004, at Lee Memorial Health System in Cape Coral, Florida. He was born November 1, 1929, in Branch County, to Gerald and Irene (Wilcox) Blonde. 
He married Mary Jean Avery September 17, 1949, and she survives.
Mr. Blonde graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949. He was a truck driver for Advanced Paving Co., retiring in 1991, and had formerly belonged to the Litchfield Fire Department and Litchfield Lions Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Mark (Kathy) Blonde and Steve (Cindy) Blonde, both of Litchfield, Philip Blonde of Quincy and Scott (Marion) Blonde of Cape Coral, Florida; a sister, Joan Kahl of Portage; three brothers, Gene (Pat) Blonde, Charles (Doris) Blonde and Robert Blonde, all of Litchfield; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Blonde was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 24, at the Litchfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Thompson officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Clayton Truax
Clayton Truax, 84, of Homer, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born February 27, 1919, in Homer, to Emanuel S. and Susie E. (Peters) Truax. 
He married Edna Lloyd December 25, 1943, and she preceded him in death June 9, 1988.
Mr. Truax was employed at Calhoun County Foundry for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a proud member of First Baptist Church of Albion. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, the outdoors, growing raspberries and going out to eat.
He is survived by two daughters, Grace Meinke of Manitou Beach, and Gladys Truax of Ann Arbor; a son, Gary (Diane) Truax of Coldwater; a sister, Florence Wood of Homer; and a grandchild, Michelle LaPratt of Coldwater.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and numerous brothers and sisters. 
A funeral service was held Saturday, January 24, at the First Baptist Church in Albion, with Pastor Dennis Dixon officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. 
Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Albion.

James Edward Hughes
James Edward Hughes, 77, formerly of Litchfield, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004, at the Laurels of Coldwater. He was born May 3, 1926, in Ann Arbor, to Raynor and Julia (Koetk) Hughes.
He had been a bus driver for special needs adults in Hillsdale County.
Mr. Hughes is survived by a sister, Teresa Laraway of Manchester; several nieces and nephews, including Barbara Hines of Milan, Linda Trinkle and Suzie Kilbury, both of Dexter, Judy Owens of Ann Arbor, and Kathy Leneberg of Pine, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Hughes, and three sisters, Rita Laraway, Katherine Hill and Emma Jones.
A gathering of family and friends will be held today (Wednesday) from 1-3 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, followed by interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.

Wanda E. Thurow
Wanda E. Thurow, 78, of Homer, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Cedar Knoll Care Center in Grass Lake. She was born August 24, 1925, in Somerset Center, to Leonard Sr. and Viola (Roberts) Foltz.
She married Delmar F. Thurow in 1947 in Albion. He preceded her in death September 18, 1996.
Mrs. Thurow worked at McCellaus & Lonergans in Albion. She was a member of Homer United Methodist Church, the Homer Senior Citizens and the A.A.R.P.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Williams of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Gary (Denise) Thurow of Michigan Center; a stepson, Daniel (Susan) Thurow of Florida; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Delores Dane of Albion; a brother, Leonard Foltz Jr. of Florida; and her mother, Viola Foltz of Litchfield.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thurow was preceded in death by her father.
A funeral service was held Friday, January 30, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. 
Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens.

Linda Joyce Gibson
Linda Joyce Gibson, 67, of Albion, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born April 23, 1936, in Mayfield, Kentucky, to Elvis and Lula West.
She married Donald K. Gibson July 22, 1972, and he survives. She was a homemaker and an accomplished vocalist. For more than 30 years she was with the Green Valley Jamboree. 
Mrs. Gibson was a member of Cook's Prairie Baptist Church. She and her husband sang gospel music all over the country. She had several of her songs recorded.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Debbie Adair of Florida and Victoria "Vicky" Davis of Albion; four stepdaughters, Deborah Huff of Albion, Patricia  Gibson and Lora Gibson, both of Battle Creek and Tammy Behrman of Arizona; a son, Ricky Adair of Eckford; a stepson, Terry Gibson of Albion; nine grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Lehman, Jimmy and Clevis.
A funeral service was held Friday, January 30, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Tom Merrick officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Thelma LaMoyne Hamilton
Thelma LaMoyne Hamilton, 84, formerly of Litchfield, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at Vista Grand Villa, Jackson. She was born December 26, 1919, in Coldwater, to Harry and Gertrude (Walker) Barnes.
She married Harold F. Hamilton June 15, 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1977. 
Mrs. Hamilton graduated from Coldwater High School. She had worked at the Coldwater Regional Center as a teachers' aide and laundry and kitchen assistant. She formerly belonged to the Litchfield United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Larry Lee (Sue) Hamilton of Jonesville, Harold LaMar (Annette) Hamilton of Hillsdale and Dennis Kay Hamilton of Pittsford; a sister, Elva Stangel of Coldwater; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Parker; a brother, Bill Barnes; a granddaughter, Kim Hamilton; and a great-granddaughter, Stormie Renee.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. 
Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.

Jeanette Viola Hanna
Jeanette Viola Hanna, 84, of Union City, died Monday, January 26, 2004, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. She was born May 18, 1919, in Kissimmee, Florida, to Robert I. and Sarah J. (Partin) Smith.
She moved to Union City in 1939, where she has resided for the past 65 years. She married Forrest Albert Warner in 1939, and he preceded her in death in 1966. She married John W. Hanna in 1969, and he survives.
Mrs. Hanna worked as an accountant for area businesses for many years. She was an active member of the Union City United Methodist Church and the Ruth Circle. She loved to paint and work crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was the time spent with her family, particularly her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Robert (Elaine) Warner of Homer, David (Vicki) Hanna of Battle Creek and Dan (Barbara) Hanna of Union City; two daughters, Susan (James) Frook of Battle Creek and Lorna (John) Fuller of Quincy; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Freda Britt of Kissimmee, Florida, and Rebecca Michaelson of Tavares, Florida.
In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Hanna was preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca Lee and Sharon Bell, both in 1997.
A memorial service was held Friday, January 30, at Union City United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Moore officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Union City at a later date. 
Memorial contributions may be made to the Union City United Methodist Church.

Donna May King
Donna May King, 49, of Albion, died Friday, January 30, 2004, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. She was born May 26, 1954, in Jackson, to Roland L. and Doris L. (Drinkwater) Rowbotham.
She married Charles King and he survives. 
Mrs. King worked in food preparation at Albion College and was a cook for several restaurants in Albion. She enjoyed cooking very much.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Doris Rowbotham of Homer; three sons, Clint Nagle, Will Milam, Jr. and Daniel L. Milam, all of Jackson; and a brother, Mark Rowbotham of Angola, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A funeral service will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with Walt Nichols officiating. 
Interment will follow at St. Joe Cemetery.

Daurel L. Ambler
Daurel L. Ambler, 85, of Homer, died at Tendercare of Marshall Monday, February 2, 2004.
Mrs. Ambler was born December 22, 1918, in Homer, to Burdette and Ethel (Benham) Anderson.
She was a 1938 graduate of Homer High School.
She married Leo H. Ambler in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death in October of 1970. Mr. Ambler was the Calhoun County Undersheriff during Jess Purcell's term as sheriff in the late 1950s and early 1960s. During that time, the Amblers lived in the Calhoun County Jail's apartment, and Mrs. Ambler served as the matron for the sheriff department for those eight years. Except for the time spent in Marshall, Mrs. Ambler has lived in Homer her entire life. She also worked for Cornings in Albion, and the Homer Library, as a part-time staff member for a number of years. 
Mrs. Ambler was a member of Club 38, a group of Homer High School 1938 graduates. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and playing cards with them and her friends. She also liked to go to the movies, and read. She was an outgoing person who made friends easily. Mrs. Ambler enjoyed doing for others.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly J. Dibble of Homer; two sons, Robert J. (Lori) Ambler of Marshall, and James L. (Kuli) Ambler of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Duane Anderson of Texas and Merle Anderson of Battle Creek; and nieces and nephews. 
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, John Robert Ambler in infancy; two brothers, Burdette Anderson Jr., and Robert F. Anderson and a sister, Bernice Slate.
Funeral services to celebrate her life were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Craig K. Kempf funeral home, with the Rev. James Roberts officiating.

Jacqueline M. Zimmerman
Jacqueline M. Zimmerman, 77, of Homer, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at her home. 
She was born January 28, 1927, in Albion, to Arthur Lloyd and Elsie Irene (Hollenbaugh) Putnam. 
She married William Zimmerman in 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1990. 
In her early years, Mrs. Zimmerman was employed at Albion Malleable and then was a bartender for Jay's Tavern, Eagles and Hideaway Tavern. She was a former member of the Moose and Eagles Lodge and enjoyed reading, camping and jigsaw puzzles.
Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by three daughters, Barb (Jim) Baumgarner of Homer, Roxanne (Mark) Johnson of Ohio and Mary (Craig) Powell of Mississippi; four sons, Terry (Cindy) Zimmerman of Wisconsin, John (Karen) Zimmerman and William (Rita) Zimmerman, both of Homer, and Dale (Jacquelyn) Zimmerman of Marshall; a sister, Beverly Daly of Valparaiso, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Nancy Putnam of Homer; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Ed.
A memorial service was held Saturday, February 7, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Margaret Jorgensen officiating.

Paul Alfred Walkup
Paul Alfred Walkup, 84, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at home. 
He was born April 12, 1919, in Waldron, and graduated from Waldron High School in 1939.
He married Ketha Nelligan in 1940 and she survives.
Mr. Walkup served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and be-longed to the American Legion and the Franklin Masonic Lodge in Litchfield. He was a retired mail carrier and a member of the Rural Carriers Association. 
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Connie (Dan) Bills of Litchfield; two sons, Bob (Iris) Walkup of Roscommon and Jon (Joyce) Walkup of Deckerville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by eight brothers and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 7, at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery. 
A Masonic Service of Remembrance was held at 5 p.m. Friday, February 6.

Carolyn Mary Gorsline
Carolyn Mary (Harrington) Gorsline, 80, of Homer died Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall following a short illness.
Mrs. Gorsline was born September 20, 1923, in Marshall to Donald and Madeline (VandemHeede). She was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1941. She married Gerald Gorsline November 17, 1956. He preceded her in death October 13, 1998.
Mrs. Gorsline worked as a homemaker alongside her husband on the family farm. She also partnered with him in their seed sales business. In her younger years, Mrs. Gorsline also worked at Win Shuler's Restaurant.
Mrs. Gorsline enjoyed her free time as a member of the local senior citizens group, as well as a member of East Eckford Community Church. Her many hobbies included ham radio, playing cards and other games, assembling puzzles and spending time with her family. Her family stated her major passion was playing bingo on a regular basis.
Survivors include four sons, Joe (Doris) Gorsline of Jackson, David Gorsline of Marshall, and Terry and Dennis Gorsline, both of Homer; a daughter, Sharon Peterson of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Gerald, Phillip and Paul Harrington; and two sisters, Mary Houchen and Susan Fhaner.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Harrington.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 9, at Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with the Rev. Walt Nichols officiating.
Interment followed at East Eckford Cemetery.

Paul Nickles
Paul Nickles, 61, of Litchfield, died Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Battle Creek Health Systems. 
He was born January 29, 1943, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Riley and Fannie (Cole) Nickles. 
Mr. Nickles had been employed at Midwest Foundry, Coldwater, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He married Karen Jeffery October 29, 1997, and she survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Barbara Nickles; four sons, John Nickles, Owen Licht, Bill Miller and Richard Nickles; four stepchildren, Norman Mulkey, Jr., Orviel Mulkey, Linda Lawless and Stella Woods; five sisters, Ruth (Bob) Rowe, Dorothy Salyer, Martha (Don) Evans, Eula (Art) Cotrell, Lora Ann (Terry) Ward; five brothers, Amos (Kelly) Nickles, Clifford (Edith) Nickles, Clifton (Sandy) Nickles, Bill (Barb) Nickles and Ronald (Lisa) Nickles; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; five step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Betty Jean (D'Water) Weiss
Betty Jean (D'Water) Weiss, 64, of Union City, died Sunday, February 15, 2004, peacefully at her home.
Mrs. Weiss was employed for several years at Dare Products in Battle Creek.
She enjoyed spending time and laughing with family and friends. Mrs. Weiss also enjoyed her flower gardens, collecting Native American knick-knacks, playing cards and playing bingo.
She was very creative and artistic. She enjoyed crafts and built several items for her home.
She is survived by her husband, Harry "Pork" Weiss of Homer; her mother, Emma (Wilbur) D'Water of East Leroy; a son, Randy (Roxanne) Guilt of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Julie (Earl) Jordan of Baldwin; four stepsons, Chuck (Fraya) Weiss of Homer, John (Sandy) Weiss of South Haven, Greg (Delores) Weiss of Marshall and David Weiss of Battle Creek;  a stepdaughter, Sherry Weiss of Oceanside, California; three sisters, Catherine (Wayne) Smith of Battle Creek, Barbara (Dick) Fox of Athens, Mary (Jack) Ward of Springport; a brother, Donald D'Water of Bronson; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Donald D'Water, and a grandson, Timothy Weiss.

Wayne K. Crandall, 73, of Homer, died Friday, February 20, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona.

Mr. Crandall married Mary Louise Lane October 8, 1952, and she survives.
Mr. Crandall lived most of his life in Homer. He worked at Eaton Corporation in Marshall for 33 years. He also farmed. He was financial secretary of U.A.W. Local 220 for several years. 
In addition to his wife, Mr. Crandall is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Sue (Bob) Flynn of Hillsdale and Kaye (Wade) Denman of Dale, Wisconsin; three sons, Terry (Jeri Lou) Crandall and Dan (Tracey) Crandall, all of Homer, and David (Marsha) Crandall of Hortonville, Wisconsin; two sisters, Virginia Kohne of Battle Creek and Dorothy Gibson of Tucson, Arizona; three brothers, Richard Crandall of Coldwater, Lawrence Crandall of Florida and Donald Crandall of Gaylord; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Wayne K. Crandall
Wayne K. Crandall, 73, of Homer, died Friday, February 20, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. 
He was born to Mason and Marjorie (Ludlow) Crandall on November 16, 1930, in Homer Township.
Mr. Crandall married Mary Louise Lane October 8, 1952, and she survives.

He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Homer. He served on the Albion Township Board of Trustees and on the zoning board. He was a life member of the Homer VFW Post. 
Mr. Crandall enjoyed traveling and camping and was a collector of Homer memorabilia. He was a beloved mentor to the Homer youth.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Crandall is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Sue (Bob) Flynn of Hillsdale and Kaye (Wade) Denman of Dale, Wisconsin; three sons, Terry (Jeri Lou) Crandall and Dan (Tracey) Crandall, all of Homer, and David (Marsha) Crandall of Hortonville, Wisconsin; two sisters, Virginia Kohne of Battle Creek and Dorothy Gibson of Tucson, Arizona; three brothers, Richard Crandall of Coldwater, Lawrence Crandall of Florida and Donald Crandall of Gaylord; and 11 grandchildren.

Pearl Evelyn Haack
Pearl Evelyn Haack, 74, of Albion, died Saturday, February 28, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall. 
She was born September 3, 1929, in Wirth, Arkansas, to Edward J. and Violet L. (Lloyd) Rogers. 
Mrs. Haack belonged to the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, and she enjoyed collecting dolls.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Gail Loveless of Albion; a stepson, Neil Haack of Battle Creek; two sisters, Delinda Rogers of Peoria, Illinois, and Ann Bowers of West Plains, Missouri; and a brother, Lewis Rogers of Homer.
Mrs. Haack was preceded in death by a stepson, Mark Haack.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with the Rev. Larry Fulton officiating. Interment will follow in Albion Memory Gardens.

Arleta F. Littebrant
Arleta F. Littebrant, 85, of Homer, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Tendercare of Albion.
She was born December 29, 1918, in Quincy, to Hubert and Lena (Fay) Rawson. She married Ed Littebrant May 30, 1957, and he survives.
Mrs. Littebrant was a self-employed beautician, retiring several years ago. She attended Homer United Methodist Church and enjoyed golfing, traveling and sewing.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three nephews, Danny VanAntewerd of Jacksonville, Florida, Steve VanAntewerd of Jackson, and Mark VanAntewerd of Pleasant Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Lois VanAntewerd and Phyllis Fesser.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 6, at Homer United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating.

Fred R. Wooden
Fred R. Wooden, 85, of Litchfield, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. 
He was born October 9, 1918, in Scipio Township, to James and Isabel E. (Case) Wooden. 
A 1936 graduate of Litchfield High School, he also served in the U.S. Army during WWII. 
He married Ruth A. King September 8, 1940, and she survives.
Mr. Wooden was employed at Wolfinger Hardware for 30 years and had also worked at CMS Trailer Factory, The City of Litchfield Water Department, Plymouth Flush Door, and was an electrician, operating his own custom wiring service.
He served as a volunteer for the Litchfield Fire Department 25 years, member of the Litchfield School Board eight years, and was a Litchfield City Council member. He belonged to the Litchfield United Methodist Church, serving on the church board, and was an avid member of the M-99ers Square Dance Club.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wooden is survived by a daughter, Martha (Norman) Faulkner of Litchfield; a son, Richard (Judy) Wooden of Grand Rapids; and a brother, Donald (Bernadette) Wooden of Hillsdale.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Sizemore, and three brothers, Charles, Dean and Clyde Wooden.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Revs. John Thompson and Clyde Wonders officiating. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Harvey Dean Teller
Harvey Dean Teller, 79, longtime Litchfield area resident, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at home. 
He was born June 24, 1924, in Bronson, to Miles and Genese (Rumsey) Teller. 
He married Gladys I. Deventer in 1944, and she preceded him in death in 1969. He married Janice L. Allen in 1972 and she survives.
Mr. Teller served in the Army Air Force during World War II. Along with farming, he worked at Allied Products and Sears-Roebuck as a service technician. He belonged to the Litchfield Rotary Club and Litchfield Masonic Lodge, and attended the Litchfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Teller is survived by three sons, Harvey Lee (Carol) Teller of Litchfield, Milo Roy Teller of Dixon, Illinois, and Bradley Dean (Melinda) Teller of Litchfield; two sisters, June (Arnold) Hayward of Coldwater and Phyllis (Bill) Underhill of Tempo; two brothers, Donald (Ruth) Teller of Litchfield and Robert Teller of Tempo; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Teller of Dundee, Dollie Teller of Litchfield, Ruth Teller of Jackson and Hazel Mock of Kalamazoo; a brother-in-law, DeWitt Kimmer of Somerset Center; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Della Halstead, Betty Kimmer and Hazel Spahr; and three brothers, Theron, Leo and Forrest Teller.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 15, at the Litchfield United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Thompson, Clyde Wonders and Kathy Brown officiating.
Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Burlin Skaggs Coburn
Burlin Skaggs Coburn, 73, of Concord, died at his home on Sunday, March 14, 2004. 
He was born October 17, 1930, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Amos and Rebeccah (Puckett) Coburn.
He married Shirley Watkins December 26, 1953, and she survives. 
Mr. Coburn was employed by Corning Glass for 24 years. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting and guns.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kathie (Herb Jr.) Damron of Horton; two sons, Tim (Arlene) Coburn of Concord and Keith (Aleasha) Coburn of Plainwell; six sisters, Virginia McKay, Sue Blair, Dixie Back, Beatrice Calhoun, Murt Shepard and Delma Blount; two brothers, Earlin and Merlin Coburn; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Danny and Earnest Ray. 
A funeral service was held Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Revs. Jim Snyder and Greg Vincent officiating. Interment followed at Memory Gardens.

Frederick J. Zick
Frederick J. Zick, 83, of Portage, formerly of Albion, died at Rose Arbor March 17, 2004.
He was born June 26, 1920, in Albion, to Herman C. and Anna Louise (Kabel) Zick. He married Sara V. Martin September 20, 1942, and she survives.
Mr. Zick served his country during WWII as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a U.S. Postal carrier for the U.S. Government for 35 years, working in the Homer and Albion area. He retired in 1978. He was a member of the American Legion and St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he held most offices. 
He enjoyed golf and bowling, and was an avid gardener.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Barry M. (Sandra) Zick of Portage; a brother, Paul Zick of Albion; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Brand; and two brothers, Dr. Luther H. Zick and Dr. Gerald A. Zick.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion, with the Rev. James Waddell officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens.

Lester A. Burch
Lester A. Burch, 77, of Coldwater, former Litchfield resident of more than 50 years, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in Florence, Arizona. 
He was born April 15, 1926, in Kinderhook Township, to Cyrus and Emma (Eatinger) Burch. 
Mr. Burch was a millwright at Hayes-Albion Corp., retiring after 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Artillery in the 1950s. For many years he belonged to the First Baptist Church, Litchfield.
He wintered in Florence, where he belonged to the Caliente Casa De Sol American Legion post. There, he volunteered as a block leader, on the security detail and in the kitchen. He was an active member of the park there and enjoyed socializing, playing cards and involving himself in the day's activities. 
Mr. Burch spent his summers fishing, helping family members build various projects, attending Little League games and keeping watch at the livestock barn at the Branch County Fair.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Musgrove) Burch; eight children, L. Mr. Burch was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine; and three sisters, Marguerite Campbell, Virginia Wolfe and Marie Leatherland.

Virgil L. "Zeke" Avery, Sr.
Virgil L. "Zeke" Avery, Sr., 86, of Tekonsha, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
He was born July 19, 1917, in Paulding County, Ohio, to Dennis and Nellie (Reeb) Avery.
Mr. Avery married Roena Frasier April 17, 1940, in Payne, Ohio, and she preceded him in death October 15, 1983.
He lived in Ohio before moving to Michigan in the early 1940s. He had lived in the Tekonsha area since 1954.
Mr. Avery was engaged in farming in Ohio and in Hillsdale, Bronson, Coldwater and Tekonsha. He was employed at the Willow Run Bomber Plant building airplanes until the end of World War II. He also had worked at Midwest Foundry in Coldwater and the Calhoun Foundry in Homer. He moved to his present residence in 1965, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of farming until his retirement.
He enjoyed his work, his family, helping his friends, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Mr. Avery is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Jerry) Frey of Union City; two sons, Jerry (Dawn) Avery of Girard and Terry Avery and friend, Donna Machin of Climax; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Avery of Union City; five grandchildren, Tamara Bailey of Coldwater, Elizabeth "DeDe" (Paul) Palmateer of Coldwater, Christine (Steve) King of Pennsylvania, Jerry (Justin) Avery of Girard, and Gaberial Avery of Union City; great-grandchildren, David (Sara) Bailey in the U.S. Marines - California, Robin Ratliff and Katelyn King of Pennsylvania, Robert "Bubby" Ratliff of Union City and Amber, Cynthia and Seth Palmateer of Coldwater; a great-great grandchild, Logan Bailey of California; his best friend - his dog Dusty; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife of 43 years, he was preceded in death by a son, Virgil Avery, Jr., two bothers and a sister.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, 2004, at Putnam Funeral Home of Tekonsha, with Pastor John Scott of Girard United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, Tekonsha.

Hazel Marie Thompson
Hazel Marie Thompson, 91, of Marshall and formerly of Homer, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Tendercare of Marshall.
Mrs. Thompson was born  March 30, 1912, in Homer Township, to Kearney and Jennie (Finley) Granger. She had lived in the Homer and Marshall areas all of her life and was a 1931 graduate of Homer High School. Mrs. Thompson had been employed as a sales clerk by Carrington Pharmacy in Marshall and retired in 1974. While living in Homer she had worked for Armstrong's Drug Store and also at Bradley's Market.
She married Milton R. "M.R." Thompson July 22, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio. He preceded her in death February 22, 2002.
Mrs. Thompson was a former member of the Homer United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards with her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Mae (Gerald) McCoy of Siloam, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Harry (Connie) Thomas of Grand Ledge; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Debbie Childs.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by a stepsister, Ermah Southwell, and a daughter, Irene Thomas.
Services to celebrate her life were held Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment followed in Oakridge Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers were Aaron McCoy, Mark Thomas, Scott Thomas, Chris Royce, Warren Chorak and Gary Wiederhold. Honorary bearers were Ivan Thompson and Harry Butzer.

Vincent "Hank" Chamberlain
Vincent "Hank" Chamberlain, 69, of Homer, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Foote Hospital. 
He was born September 14, 1934, in Williams County, Ohio, to Clarence and Katherine M. (Marks) Chamberlain.
He married Joan Marie Marvin June 18, 1955, and she survives.
Mr. Chamberlain was a glass sealer for Corning Glass for 25 years and was also employed by Die Cast in Jackson for 20 years. He enjoyed playing baseball and had belonged to several leagues in his earlier years. He also enjoyed taking his grandchildren to ball games, doing lawn work, and hunting. 
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald Chamberlain of Tekonsha and Danny (Cindy) Chamberlain of Homer; a brother, Relmond Chamberlain of Sturgis; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Connie Cuatt; and five brothers, Morris, Richard, Robert, William and Jack.
A funeral service was held Monday, March 29, 2004, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Don Lee officiating. Interment followed at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer, Ohio.

Meta I. Hobus
Meta I. Hobus, 74, of Albion and a former Homer resident for 25 years, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at her home.
Mrs. Hobus was born March 11, 1930, in Albion, to Robert and Hanna (Sanders) Wolter. She married Leonard Hobus in 1954. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Mrs. Hobus was a registered nurse at Albion Community Hospital for 18 years. After her retirement she was employed by Tendercare of Marshall for three years. She was a member of Caring Community Church in Albion and the Albion Garden Club, and she enjoyed crocheting, fishing and was a Tiger baseball fan.
Survivors include three sons, Terry Hobus and Mark Hobus, both of Albion, and Dennis (Yvonne) Hobus of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and two grandchildren in Oklahoma.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Joann Leib.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 30, at Caring Community Church, with the Rev. Steve Shafe, officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery in Albion.

Malinda A. Earl
Malinda A. Earl, 81, of Battle Creek, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Branch County Health Systems.
Mrs. Earl was born January 17, 1923, in Elwood, Indiana, to Ralph and Carrie (Pine) Hartsock. She married Kenneth Earl in 1959. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Mrs. Earl was a nurse attendant at the Coldwater State Home for 10 years and was also employed at Ft. Custer for several years. She was a member of Pennfield United Brethren Church of Christ and enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles and other games.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra (Cecil) McClelland of Homer, Judith (David) Chadderdon of Glen-dale, California, and Jacqueline Palmatier of Richmond, Virginia; a son, Charles (Brenda) Beatty, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida; a sister, Doris Fisher of Battle Creek; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hartsock of Elwood; a brother, Robert Hartsock of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by  two brothers and a sister. 
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 27, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Larry Fulton officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Elaine C. Cracraft
Elaine C. Cracraft, 75, of Albion, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mrs. Cracraft was born July 17, 1928, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Marion and Lilih (Lard) Comfort. She married Scott Cracraft February 12, 1955. He survives.
Mrs. Cracraft received her education at the University of Mississippi.
She was active in community affairs, including Camp Fire Girls in Homer, ELT, DAR and Pi Beta Phi. She belonged to the Albion Historical Society, Hospital Service League, A.I.M., and Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall. She always remained very interested in Southern heritage and traditions.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Scott (Ellen) Cracraft Jr. of Gilford, New Hampshire, and James (Holly) Cracraft of Northville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 
She was preceded in death by a son, George, and a sister, Louise Chambers.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 2, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., with the family present from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall, with the Rev. Leonard Brinkmoeller officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Albion.

Lester E. Spees
Lester E. Spees, 83, of Homer, died in the loving care of his family Monday, March 29, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 16, 1920, to John and Anna (Barkley) Spees in McGuffey, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Koch June 12, 1943, and she survives. 
Mr. Spees was employed as a machinist at Yardman in Jackson for 12 years and also Decker Manufacturing for 20 years. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and fought with the 3rd Army during the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Spees was a member of the Moose Lodge in Marshall for 25 years, the M-99 Square Dance Club and St. John Catholic Church. He spent winters in Florida for 17 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Linda (Harold) Stull of Marshall, Mary Sue (Ron) Bertram of Parma, and Pat (Dean) Watts of Battle Creek; a son, David (Gloria) Spees of Marshall; a niece, Barbara Lindsey of Jackson; special friends, Dorothy and John Wolter of Jackson; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lester Jr., and nine brothers and sisters.
A funeral service was held Friday, April 2, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church in Albion, with Father Gordon Greene officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

DeWayne Lemmon
DeWayne Lemmon, 49, of Reading, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater. 
He was born May 30, 1954, in Montpelier, Ohio, and graduated from Camden-Frontier High School in 1972. He married Nancy Jones October 11, 1980, and she survives.
Mr. Lemmon sold John Deere farm equipment for 20 years, and had been a salesman and manager of a printing company in Sturgis. He was a member and president of the Camden Jaycees and enjoyed coaching summer softball teams in Reading. He belonged to the Montgomery United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Danielle Lemmon of Reading; a son, Jared Lemmon of Reading; a foster son, James Tracey of Reading; his father and stepmother, Lyle and Sally Lemmon of Camden; two sisters, Beverly Lemmon of Denver, Colorado, and Margo (Cliff) Fether of Waldron; and a brother, Fred (Lori) Lemmon of Camden.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Lemmon, in 1993.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 31, at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with the Rev. Diane Stone officiating. Interment followed in Camden Cemetery.

Frank Chlystek
Frank Chlystek, 82, of Homer, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. 
He was born October 10, 1921, in River Rouge, to Antoni and Anna (Szewczyk) Chlystek, who came to this country from Poland in 1913.
He married Benjamina Truszkowski October 7, 1950. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Mr. Chlystek owned Gold Top Dairy in Albion at one time, and provided trucking services to Gale Manufacturing of Albion. He and Benjamina also owned and operated Frank and Bengies party store in Athens for 16 years. 
All through his different careers, Mr. Chlystek pursued his love of the land and farming until his health no longer allowed it. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. John Catholic Church and was formerly a member of the Elk Lodge. He enjoyed bowling.
Mr. Chlystek is survived by two daughters, Lucille Bennett of Portage and Betty Chlystek of Austin, Texas; two sons, Francis (Danuta) Chlystek of Athens and Edward (Dr. Janette Bach) Chlystek of Saginaw; a sister, Mary Marzic of Albion; eight grandchildren, Barbara, Timothy, Robert, Thomas, Christopher, Victoria, Hannah and Tyler; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Ryan.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Casimer.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church in Albion, with Father Gordon Greene and Father Frank Skalski officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Lloyd B. Stanham
Lloyd B. Stanham, 87, of Parma, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Community Health Center of Branch County.
He was born April 12, 1916, in Eckford Township, to Floyd and Bessie (Face) Stanham. He married Flora Ruth Schimke June 24, 1950, and she preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. Stanham worked as an electrician for WIBM Radio in Jackson, then worked at Albion Malleable for 23 years, retiring in 1978. He then moved to Central Lake, returning to Parma in 1988. He served his country in the Army during WWII. He was a member of Parma Baptist Church and Albion V.F.W. He was also a 4-H leader in electronics for a number of years and a Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a stepdaughter, Judith Norment (Larry Sipe) of Albion; a stepson, James David (Shyrel) Brown of Albion; a daughter-in-law, Mary Stanham of Parma; two sisters, Tressie Hotchkiss of Charlotte and Ruth Hamilton of Litchfield; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Randall Stanham.
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 10, 2004, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Steve Shafe officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Homer.

Lee L. Coler
Lee L. Coler, 70, longtime Litchfield and Albion area resident, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
Mr. Coler was born October 11, 1933, in Camden, to Marshall and Leona (Brouse) Coler. He was employed for many years at Corning Glass Co. and Albion Industries.
Mr. Coler served in the U.S. Army and belonged to the Litchfield American Legion Post, the Eagles Lodge and Moose Lodge of Albion.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Perry) Camp of Albion and Barbara Coler of Swartz Creek; two sons, David (Valerie) Coler of Litchfield and Dennis (Peggy) Coler of Hills-dale; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra; three brothers; and a grandson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. 
Interment followed in Mount Hope cemetery in Litchfield.

Della May Seevers
Della May Seevers, 81, of Litchfield, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. 
Mrs. Seevers was born September 5, 1922, in Hanover, to Andrew J. "Jay" and Bessie (Soules) Lyons. She had been employed at Jonesville Products for 35 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Clara Jordan of Jonesville, Sandra Benjamin (Ken) Shelbourn of Litchfield, and Debra (Brad) Hukill of Reading; a son, John (Jessie) VanWert of Jonesville; two sisters, Nina Burns of Jonesville and Jean Hinkle of Napoleon; a brother, Ernest "Bud" Lyons of Jonesville; a special friend, Howard Wolff of Litchfield; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Duane VanWert and Morris Seevers; and a sister, Catherine Johnson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 20, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Daniel Pann officiating. 
Interment in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield will follow at a later date.

George L. Bitz Jr.
George L. Bitz Jr., 86, of Tekonsha, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at his residence.
Mr. Bitz was born January 1, 1918, in Coldwater to George and Julia (Briggs) Bitz. He married Georgia B. Wilson June 22, 1941 in Coldwater. She preceded him in death August 27, 1990.
Mr. Bitz was a resident of the Calhoun County area since the 1940s. He formerly was a meat cutter for various groceries. Along with his wife, he operated Thurston's Furniture Store in Quincy and Bitz and Pieces Antique Shop in Allen. His hobbies included antiquing and fishing.
Survivors include two sons, Richard (Candy) Bitz of Tekonsha and Leo (Pat) Bitz of The Villages, Florida; a daughter, Sandra (Jerry) Thurston of Homer; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister Judy (Boyd) Blashfield of Coldwater.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bitz was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 20, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Angel Rojas officiating.
Burial followed in West Clarendon Cemetery.

Iown Darling
Iown Darling, 95, of London Township, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at the Evangelical Home in Saline. 
She was born March 26, 1909, in Litchfield, to Artemus and Alta (Woolfe) Crandall. 
Mrs. Darling came to Milan in the late 1920s and taught school in a one-room schoolhouse for a number of years after receiving a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University. It was there she met Gilbert Darling, a local farmer, fell in love and married August 14, 1932. He preceded her in death October 1, 1996.
As a farmer's wife and schoolteacher in the Milan area schools, Mrs. Darling helped start the Remedial Reading Program. She also attended the Marble Memorial United Methodist Church in Milan, the London Senior Center and was a lifelong member of the Farm Bureau and the Monroe County Fair.
She is survived by two sons, Elgin (Joanne) Darling of Willis and Norman (Karen) Darling of Linden, Virginia; five grandchildren, Douglas (Helen) Darling of Maybee, Pamela (Mark) Stralnic of London Township, Dale Darling of Orangevale, California, Kristina (Frank) Darling of Munich, Germany, and Carolin (Peter) Darling of Weilier, Germany; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl and Lauren Crandall of Litchfield; and two sisters, Audrey O'Mealey of Marshall and Helen (Wayne) Van Patten of Jonesville.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Muriel and Arlene.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 22, at Marble Memorial United Methodist Church in Milan, with the Rev. Kristine Sigal officiating. Burial followed in London Township Cemetery.

Frances Lucille (Church) Smith
Frances Lucille (Church) Smith, 94, of Jackson and formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Arbor Manor in Spring Arbor. 
She was born July 28, 1909, in Evart, to Lynn Henry and Grace Alvina (VanAtter) Church. She married Walter A. Smith February 16, 1929, in Homer. He preceded her in death April 26, 1987.
Mrs. Smith was a resident of Jackson and the Calhoun County area for most of her life. She was a homemaker. She attended the Methodist Church in Ellenton, Florida. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She used to deer hunt with her husband.
She is survived by five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Vera Buckles of Spokane, Washington; a brother, Richard Eberenz of Jackson; and a special niece and nephew, Brian and Bonnie Felde of Jackson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen L. Davis and E. Ruth Whitney; a sister, Elma Jenkins; and a brother, L. C. Church.
A funeral service was held Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Margaret Jorgensen officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery.

Beatrice E. Swift
Beatrice E. Swift, 92, of Bellevue, formerly of Homer, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at her residence. 
She was born August 22, 1911, in Pulaski, to Charles T. and Elizabeth Bartell.
She married Glenn A. Swift November 10, 1945, in Jackson County. He preceded her in death October 12, 1977.
Mrs. Swift graduated from Homer High School in 1931. She was a former postal clerk in Homer and also worked at the C. Armstrong Pharmacy in Homer. She attended Howe Wesleyan Church in Parma, and was a member of the Howe Wesleyan Ladies Aide. She enjoyed collecting food recipes.
She is survived by a son, Doug (Linda) Swift of Bellevue; two step-grandsons, Troy Vahs and Scott Vahs, both of Bellevue; a sister-in-law, Louise Bartell of Midland; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Nina Hatch, Blanche Snyder and Myrtle Smith; and two brothers, Claude Bartell and Clarence Bartell.
A funeral service was held Monday, April 26, 2004, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Rick Hayden officiating. Interment followed in Chapel Cemetery, Sandstone Township.

Marvin B. Smith
Marvin B. Smith, 77, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. 
He was born September 13, 1926, in Litchfield, to Owen E. Smith and Lulu M. (Allen) Meyers.
Mr. Smith married Betty Sue Ream November 18, 1971, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and she preceded him in death December 16, 1997.
Mr. Smith graduated from Litchfield High School in 1943 and from the Argubrite Business College in 1948. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Quarter Master 3rd Class. He was an accountant for 38 1/2 years at the Kellogg Company, retiring in 1987.
He wintered in Arizona City, Arizona, for many years and enjoyed golfing. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed sports on television. He was a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club, Lakeview Lion's Club, Riverside Country Club and Arizona City Golf Club.
He is survived by a son, Brad Allen Smith of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; stepsons, James Clayton Collier of Beatrice, Nebraska, Keith Edward Collier of Lee Summitt, Missouri, and Robert Martin Collier of Brownsboro, Alabama; three brothers, Allen Keith Smith of Perry, Ronald LaVern Smith of Parma, and Russell David Smith of Litchfield; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Smith; and two brothers, Donald Smith and Owen Smith.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 29, at the Bachman Funeral Chapel in Battle Creek, with Pastor Steven S. Olmstead of Pleasantview Family Church officiating. Entombment was to take place at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Lucille Ann Holliday
Lucille Ann Holliday, 53, of rural Tekonsha, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Battle Creek Health Systems. 
She was born October 1, 1950, in Hillsdale, to Clarence and Jennie (Frazier) Cole. She attended Litchfield schools. She was employed as a home health care nurse's aide with Progressive Residential Services, Inc., Marshall.
Mrs. Holliday enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family.
She is survived by three sons, Danny Hullett, Mark Farkas of Coldwater and Joe Farkas of Tekonsha; three stepchildren, James Smith, Joy Smith and Ruby Smith, all of Union City; three brothers, Jay (Velma) Cole of Quincy, James (Chris) Cole of Hillsdale, and Robert Cole of Jonesville; four grandchildren; and two special friends, Katie Hughes and Kaila Griffith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Wodena Hartley.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 30, at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, followed by interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.

Wilford J. Barrington
Wilford J. Barrington, 77, lifelong Mosherville resident, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He was born June 25, 1926, in Mosherville, to Floyd and Vernia (Lister) Barrington. 
Mr. Barrington was a farmer and had also worked at Miller's Grange and the Scipio Township Transfer Station. He belonged to Mosherville Community Church and was a former member of the Mosherville Grange. 
He is survived by a sister, Donna Gauger of Jonesville, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Barrington was preceded in death by a brother, George Barrington; a half brother, Avery Brown; and a half sister, Elizabeth Brown.
Funeral services were held Monday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with interment following in Mosherville Cemetery. 
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Mosherville Community Church.

Col. Paul Chamberlain
A memorial service and interment for Col. Paul Chamberlain (1917-2003) will take place in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Block 8, Lot 53, Litchfield at noon Saturday. Pastor Mike Murray of the Litchfield Congregational Church will officiate.
A luncheon at the Litchfield Congregational Church will follow the service.

James "Monroe" Patrick
James "Monroe" Patrick, 86, of Homer, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre.
Mr. Patrick was born December 7, 1917, in Frenchburg, Kentucky, to Alvin and Bertha (Bailey) Patrick. His first wife Norma Terry preceded him in death in 1979. He married Wilma Wallen July 6, 1991. She survives.
Mr. Patrick had been employ-ed at Gale Manufacturing Co. for 17 years and also at Albion Industries and Huffman Farms. He attended several area Baptist churches and enjoyed gardening, hunting and going for walks.
In addition to his second wife, survivors include five daughters, Mary (Lee) Howard, Florence (Melvin) Howard, Carol (James) Caudill Helton and Judy Owens, all of Homer, and Betty (Abe) Prater of Litchfield; four sons, James (Sharon) Patrick of Alabama, Larry Patrick and Dave (Abby) Patrick) all of Homer, and Chandler Terry of Rome City, Indiana; one step-daughter; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 4, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment followed in Albion Memory Gardens.

Richard O. "Jr." Drumm
Richard O. "Jr." Drumm, 73, of Eckford Township, Marshall, died at his home in the love and care of his family Tuesday morning, May 4, 2004.
He was born in Fredonia Township south of Marshall September 18, 1930, to Oral J. and Alberta R. (Taylor) Drumm. 
Mr. Drumm was a 1949 graduate of Marshall High School.  He was very active in high school sports, especially basketball. As a child, he was a featured vocal soloist at the Bohm Theater in Albion and other area entertainment venues.
He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Heath, April 14, 1951. She survives. The couple was blessed with a good marriage these past 53 years.
Mr. Drumm was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He served in an artillery unit on the front lines in Korea for a year-and-a-half. After his honorable discharge and return, he owned and operated South Avenue Foundry in Battle Creek. He later worked for the former Brooks Foundry in Albion, from where he retired. He enjoyed farming all of his life. These past few years he assisted on the farm with his sons Don Drumm and Dan Drumm, and friend Keith Lawrence. He was also his wife's "right hand man" at her "Little Toy Drum Antiques And Gifts" shop in Marshall.
Mr. Drumm's other love in life was hunting and fishing. He looked forward to his trips to northern Michigan with his wife and family at Mullett Lake. He was an avid bowler for many years on Marshall Lane's Industrial League, and also Moose Mixed League with his wife Peggy.
He was a member of the Lyon Lake United Methodist Church, and the Moose Lodge #676 of Marshall.
"Grandpa Junie" was a loving husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother and uncle, and family get-togethers were always an important time to him.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sandy Drumm of Marshall; two sons, Don (Robin) Drumm and Dan (Lori) Drumm, all of Homer; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Robb) Wright, Rob (Karla) Brodock, Michael (Heather) Drumm, Amy Drumm, Staci Drumm, Justin Drumm, and Jordan Drumm; 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Mitchell and Kassandra Wright, Baylee Brodock, Caleb and Kayleigh Drumm, Cody and Caden Turner, and Carter and Deveny Tackett; two sisters, Lois (James) Haskins and Donna (Alan) Shebel, all of Albion; and several nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Drumm, and a sister, Betty Wargo.
Funeral services celebrating his life were held Friday, May 7, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. Interment followed in Lyon Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice. Assistance with memorials is available at Kempf Funeral Home.

Evelyn E. Trammel
Evelyn E. Trammel, 78, of Litchfield, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mrs. Trammel was born December 23, 1925, in Jackson, to Henry and Hilda (Abbey) Jenkins. She graduated from Litchfield High school in 1943. She married W. Newell Trammel January 16, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1996.
Mrs. Trammel co-owned and operated Jenkins Golf Course and restaurant in Litchfield and belonged to the Litchfield United Methodist Church. 
Survivors include two sons, Charles (Mary Lynn Lower) Trammel of Grand Rapids, and Terry Trammel of Litchfield; a sister, Marjorie Jenkins of Litchfield; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn (Stuart) Marshall of Oak Park.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Trammel was preceded in death by a son, Lindall Trammel.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 11, at the Litchfield United Methodist Church, with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Marian E. Huckfeldt
Marian E. Huckfeldt, 83, of Albion, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at her home. 
She was born May 16, 1920, in Detroit, to Robert R. and Clara R. (Anderson) Beam. She married Otto "Dutch" Huckfeldt in Bryan, Ohio, February 14, 1940. He preceded her in death April 7, 1991.
Mrs. Huckfeldt retired from Eaton Corporation in 1986. She graduated from Brighton High School in 1936 and enjoyed collecting dolls, retirement dinners, sewing (she was an excellent seamstress), crocheting, macramé, and loved to shop.
She is survived by a daughter, RoseAnn "Sue" (Clinton) Mc-Gillis of Albion; two sons, George Otto (Linda) Huckfeldt of Olivet and Robert "Bill" W. (Rose) Huckfeldt of Homer; two sisters, Lavon Pare of North Carolina and Janice Williams of Florida; four brothers, Robert Beam, Charles Beam, James Beam and Chuck Beam, all of California; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Huckfeldt was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service at this time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Hospice of Jackson.

Angel Nicole Sparks was stillborn Thursday, May 13, 2004, at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
She is survived by her parents, Eric and Nicole (Ott) Sparks of Homer; two brothers, Gabriel Sparks and Kaden Sparks, both of Homer; a sister, Emmalie Sparks of Homer; grandparents, Jim and Jodee Sparks of Tampa, Florida; Eli Sparks Sr. of Jonesville; James and Esther Robinson of Homer; Deborah Gordon of Battle Creek; Gladys Michael of Homer; and Lorene Siegrist of Tampa, Florida.
A graveside service was held Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Fairview Cemetery in Homer with the Rev. Ron Hackworth officiating.
Arrangements were handled by the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.

Betty L. Miller
Betty L. Miller, 73, of Litchfield, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at home.
Mrs. Miller was born April 14, 1931, in Homer Township, to Howard and Marie (Albro) Hess. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949.
She married Elton J. "Bud" Miller June 21, 1952. He survives.
Mrs. Miller had been an operator for the Litchfield telephone company, had worked for Litchfield Dairy, and retired from the Litchfield School District, where she had worked for more than 20 years, the last 10 as food service director. She was a member of the Litchfield Rebekah Lodge and enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and cake decorating.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Terry Miller of Litchfield and Steve (Crystal) Miller of North Adams; two brothers, Harold (Jan) Hess of Coldwater and William (Lois) Hess of Marcellus; and five grandchildren, Joshua, Ashley, Lexi and Sierra Miller and Kylie Jo Wedel.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy (Jerry) McClaren and Eleanor Gochanour, and a grandson, Jefferey Miller.
 Visitation was Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the funeral home, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating.
Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Virgil S. Crawfis
Virgil S. Crawfis, 91, of Homer, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Laurels of Coldwater. 
Mr. Crawfis was born September 10, 1912, in Leipsic, Ohio, to Lewis F. and Laura E. (Jickefoose) Crawfis. 
He was a 1929 graduate of Findlay Business College.
He married Elsie M. Horton in Findlay, Ohio, on July 4, 1933. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Mr. Crawfis performed civilian work for the U.S. government during WWII as an aircraft mechanic specializing in B-26 bombers, both at Patterson Field in Ohio and Kellogg Field in Battle Creek.
In 1945, following WWII, he resigned his position with the government and began farming in Ohio. He moved to the Calhoun County area in 1950.
Mr. Crawfis and his wife collected and restored antique furniture, lamps and clocks. He enjoyed the outdoors, specifically hunting and growing crops and trees. He was a member of the Jackson Pony Trotting Club, and enjoyed working with ponies for many years.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Findlay.
Mr. Crawfis is survived by a son, Raymond (Sandra) Crawfis of Durand; a sister, Margaret A. Traucht of Arlington, Ohio; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his longtime caregiver, Clara Mae Iles of Homer.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett, Ralph and Nelson, and a sister, Florence Heller.
Graveside services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Ohio.

Meta E. Harris
Meta E. Harris, 88, of Homer, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Litchfield Nursing Centre, Litchfield. 
She was born October 30, 1915, to John B. and Sophie (Koch) Stanley.
She married Malcolm S. Harris Sr., and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Harris lived in Homer for 20 years. She was a chef at the True Grist Dinner Theatre. She enjoyed reading, knitting and doing crafts.
She is survived by a son, Malcolm S. (Ruth) Harris Jr. of Ft. Payne, Alabama; a son-in-law, Billy Sandifer of Homer; three grandchildren, Vicki (Sam) Mestdagh of Homer, Bill (Sandy) Sandifer of Jacksonville, Florida, and Brian (Nicole) Harris of Ft. Payne, Alabama; five great-grandchildren, Andrea and Damon Mestdagh of Homer, Alex and Mitchell Sandifer of Jacksonville, Florida, and Tatum Harris of Ft. Payne, Alabama.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Harris, and a daughter, Barbara Sandifer.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Chaplin Denise Hetherwick officiating.
Family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday.
According to Mrs. Harris's wishes, cremation has taken place.

Harold "Stub" Vincent
Harold "Stub" Vincent, 86, of Homer, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mr. Vincent was born August 28, 1917, in Clarendon Township, to Fred R. and Martha E. (Keeney) Vincent. He married Delta Huston September 12, 1948. She survives.
Mr. Vincent graduated from Homer Community Schools in 1934. He was a dairy farmer until his retirement seven years ago. He served his country during World War II as a 1st. Lt. in the Army Air Corp and as a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He was a life member of the 57th Bomb Wing Association (Africa, Sicily, Italy and Corsica) 440 Bombardment Squadron of the 319 Bombardment Group.
Mr. Vincent was past president of the Alumni Association, and a member and elder of Homer First Presbyterian Church, where he was superintendent of Sunday School for several years. He was also a past Master and life member of F&AM #29; past worthy patron and life member of Stella Chapter #140; board member of the Masonic Temple Association, was a member of the Homer Community Schools Scholarship Fund for 17 years; was a trustee for 21 years for Eckford Township; was past director of Michigan Artificial Breeders Co-op of Eastern Calhoun County; a member of the Progressive Farmers; Progressive Farmers Sportsmen Association of Calhoun County, and a member of the Homer Fire Board.
Mr. Vincent enjoyed the outdoors, reading books about flying, and spending time with his grandchildren. 
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Dana (Joseph) Jezowski of Marshall, Dawn (Jeffery) Klann of Oregon; two sons, Dale (Sharla) Vincent of Tekonsha and Dean (Susan) Vincent of Homer; two sisters, Donna Bowersox and Dorothy Taylor, both of Montana; two brothers, Russell Vincent of Florida and Robert D. Vincent of Battle Creek; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Warren and Richard; and one infant sister, Eva Marie.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 1, at the First Presbyterian Church in Homer, with the Rev. Margaret Jorgensen officiating
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Patricia Ann Smith
Patricia Ann Smith, 66, of Hanover, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at her home.
She was born October 31, 1937, in Albion, to Grant J. and Marion (Woodhurst) Bentley.
She married Oliver Smith, Sr. April 19, 1957. He preceded her in death in 1999.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and enjoyed crafts.
She is survived by six daughters, Opal (John) Trevino of Lansing, Peggy Prater of Ohio, Carolyn (Ray) Semora of Homer, Ethel Smith of Indiana, Deborah (Randy) Curtzwiler of Ohio and Linda (John) Ratliff of Homer; four sons, Kenneth Warrick of Hanover, Clayton Smith of Coldwater, Oliver Smith, Jr. of Homer and Charles (Lenora) Smith of Albion; three brothers, Richard Bentley of Tennessee, Jerry Bentley of Jackson, and Robert Bentley of Louisiana; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Susan Bentley.
A graveside service was held Friday, June 4, at Albion Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Jim Snyder officiating.

Helen R. (Bartley) King
Helen R. (Bartley) King, 74, of Homer, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. 
She was born December 5, 1929, in JoNancy, Kentucky, to Lee and Mary (Adkins) Osborne.
Mrs. King worked at Randall's Beans, Wagner Industries, Homer Heat Treating and the Homer Post Office. She enjoyed belonging to the Calhoun County Pony Club.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary Hubbard of Union City, Dorothy Gifford of Homer, Diane Parsons of Spring Arbor and Gerry Bongotsky; two sons, John (Karen) Bartley of Homer and Randy (Debbie) Bartley of Springport; a brother, Fred Osborne; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. King was preceded in death by two husbands, Robert Bartley (1973) and Robert Russell King (1996), a grandson, and five brothers.

Ruth L. Creps
Ruth L. Creps, 88, of Concord, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Foote Hospital, Jackson. 
She was born March 31, 1916, in Albion Township, to Darwin Clyde and Lettie M. (Mann) Creps.
Mrs. Creps lived in Pulaski Township most of her life. She worked at Union Steel Products for 33 years. She enjoyed the outdoors, wildlife, hunting, playing cards and doing puzzles.
She is survived by a niece, Elaine (Christian) Seedorf of Albion; and a friend, Joe Blodgett of Albion. 
Mrs. Creps was preceded in death by a brother, Garfield Creps, in 1989.
A funeral service was held Friday, June 18, 2004, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Dwayne Bagley officiating.

Phyllis Dean Rowe
Phyllis Dean Rowe, 56, of Homer, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing. 
She was born February 15, 1948, in Paintsville, Kentucky, to Clifford Lee and Ruth (Smith) Robinette. 
She married William R. Rowe in 1964, and he survives. 
Mrs. Rowe was a homemaker who enjoyed fishing, gardening, her dogs and especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Judy Rowe, Penny (Ronnie) Mulkey, Bonnie Jean (Rick) Broughton and Crystal Rowe, all of Albion; two sons, Billy (Robin) Rowe of Homer and Russell (Judy) Rowe of Olivet; three sisters, Jean Meeks, Bonnie Esterwood and Lois Johnson, all of Albion; two brothers, Charles Robinette of Albion and Ervin Robinette of Springport; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Randall and Henry Robinette.

Clayton Alexander Hopp
Clayton Alexander Hopp, 78, of Homer, died at his home Friday, July 9, 2004. 
He was born June 7, 1926, to Clayton J. and Ruth A. (McAllister) Hopp in Ypsilanti.
He married Monica Ellen Williams on November 9, 1944, and she survives.
Mr. Hopp graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1944 and entered the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS John R. Pierce in the South Pacific during World War II. When he returned, he attended the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1950. After graduation he worked at Meinmann-Matthews drugstore and later bought into the store, which was sold in 1967. 
Mr. Hopp then joined the Medical Center of the University of Michigan and stayed there until he retired in 1987. He was a past president of Washtenaw County Pharmaceutical Association and was a member of the Meadowview School Board. 
He had been active in the Homer United Methodist Church, the Homer Historical Society and enjoyed being a member of the M-Club of Ann Arbor.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Daniel Frederick (Maria) Hopp of St. Joseph; two daughters, Elizabeth Ruelle McGuire (Stephen) Heller of Manchester, and Emily Louise (John) Salvette of Ann Arbor; a daughter-in-law, Susan Hopp of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Lois Louise (Roger) Katon of Ypsilanti and Ruth Lorraine (Robert) Bogardus of Munith; a brother, William Howard (Norma) Hopp of Munith; many nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a son, Clayton Alexander Hopp, Jr.

Lloyd W. Andrus
Lloyd W. Andrus, 92, of Jackson, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at W. A. Foote Memorial Hospital.
He served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the Philippines. He retired from the superintendent position of the PawPaw waste water treatment plant after 20 years of service. 
Mr. Andrus was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge Homer Chapter #29, the All Royal Arch Masonic Chapter #130 and the Eastern Star Chapter #140. He was a volunteer fireman for the Village of Homer.
Mr. Andrus was a professional shuffle board player and member of the Tavares Shuffle Board Club in Florida, officiating in the Florida State Championship Tournament. He was an avid banjo and guitar player, vocalist, hunter, card player and loved to travel with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Frances (Hayner) Andrus; two daughters, Nola Andrus of Jackson and Carole (Horst) Andrus-Behncke of Horton; five grandchildren Kirk Smith, Kelly (Linda) Warner, Kari Warner, Lynn (Laurie) Smith and Kevin (Angela) Warner; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Carrie (Simmons) Andrus; a brother, Albert Andrus; two sisters, Gladys (Theo) Dawson and Elsie (Jay) Davis; and a great-grandson, Tate Warner.
Cremation has taken place, in accordance with Mr. Andrus' wishes.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 309 S. Sophia St. in Homer. The Rev. Maggie Jorgensen will officiate the service. 
Memorial contributions may be made to the disabled American Veterans, 3744 E. Michigan Ave., Jackson, MI 49202.

Mildred "Honey" Johnson
Mildred "Honey" Johnson, 84, of Albion, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Johnson was born October 30, 1919, in Battle Creek to Bert Jack and Hazel Josephine (Terry) Teller. She married John C. Johnson July 2, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Mrs. Johnson was a secretary for Albion Public Schools for 13 years and was also employed by Union Steel Products during the war.  She was a secretary for the Legal Aid Society for Calhoun County, a member of the Professional & Business Women's Association, Entre Nous Club, Red Cross Blood Bank, the St. James Episcopal Church, the election board, 4-H Extension Club and was a Hospital  Service League volunteer.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Richard) Underwood of Huntersville, North Carolina; a son, Charles "Chuck" Johnson of Albion; five grandsons; and four step-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters.
Funeral services were Friday, July 16, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Father Ed Scully officiating. 
Memorial contributions are suggested to Good Samaritan Hospice. 

Logan Matthew Warner
Logan Matthew Warner, infant son of Dustin C. and Candy May (Smith) Warner of Homer, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital. 
In addition to his parents, survivors include grandparents, Doug and Ruth Warner of Homer, Corky and Heather Smith of Albion, and Nerissa and Perry Barnett of Litchfield; great-grandparents, Fran Warner and Marie Coxon, both of Homer, and Harry Taylor of Harrison; a brother Dylan Warner at home; and several aunts and uncles.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 20, at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Steve Shafe officiating. 
Funeral arrangements were handled by  J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.

Leon N. Wooten, Jr.
Leon N. Wooten, Jr., 56, of Marshall, died July 17, 2004, at Borgess Medical Center.
He was born August 18, 1948, in Albion, to Leon N. and Theresa (Collins) Wooten, Sr.
Mr. Wooten married Sandra Sue Sheldon September 3, 1966, and she survives.
Mr. Wooten was employed by Calhoun Foundry and Harvard Industries for 27 years. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Albion and enjoyed bowling, camping, bingo, bird watching, and was an avid sports fan. He also enjoyed raising his grandson Christopher Easterwood.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Dawn (Jeff) Norman of Battle Creek and Tonia Kevrin of Jackson; two sons, Johnny Lee Wooten of Marshall and Lonnie (Judy) Harris of Minnesota; a sister, Delena Chase of Battle Creek; a half sister, Karen Wintersteen of Marshall; a half  brother, Hubert Mulkey of Marshall; several stepbrothers and sisters; pets Boomer, Socks and Deogie; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Mr. Wooten was preceded in death by two brothers, Tony and Steve Wooten.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 20, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastors Jeff and David Waid officiating. Interment followed at Rice Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Diabetes Association.

Margaret M. Leedle
Margaret M. Leedle, formerly of Homer, died on her 89th birthday, May 30, 2004. 
She was born May 30, 1915, in Ludington, to William and Emilla Dahike. 
She was a beautician and later the co-owner with her husband of Leedle's Hardware Store in Homer. Upon her retirement in 1982 she moved to Fort Myer, Florida. She was an avid golfer and bridge player, and she enjoyed bird watching. She attended St. Michael's Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Leedle is survived by a grandson and his wife, Greg and Kerry Leedle; a granddaughter, Teresa Leedle; two great-grandchildren, Alexanderia and Brittany Leedle; and a daughter-in-law, Doris Leedle, all of Iowa. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry in 1992 and her son William in 1995.
Cremation arrangements were made by Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Fowlerville.

John W. Douglas
John Douglas, 73, of Haddonfield, New Jersey, formerly of Cass City, died Thursday, July 22, 2004.
He attended Albion College and graduated from the University of Michigan. He worked as a Systems Design Engineer for RCA and GE for 38 years. He was an active member of the building committee of the Haddonfield Methodist Church and provided technical support for the sound and light systems.
Mr. Douglas is survived by his wife Eloise; daughters Linda (Jack) Gaffney and Barbara; sons Walter and Arthur; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Marilyn Douglas of Homer; many nieces and nephews; and cousins in Jackson.
Memorial services will be held July 31 at the Haddonfield Methodist Church.

Kent Thomas Gregg
Kent Thomas Gregg, 52, of Homer, died at Borgess Medical Center Friday, July 9, 2004.
He was born February 8, 1952, in Albion, to Duane and Shirley (Holmes) Gregg. 
Mr. Gregg was employed by Marshall Public Schools as a custodian for 20 years. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and hunting. He served on the Homer Fire Department.
He is survived by his parents, Duane and Shirley Gregg of Homer; a son, Jason Duane Gregg of Florida; and a sister, Karen (Paul) Kujala of Traverse City.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 31, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Homer, with the Rev. Jim Snyder officiating. 
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Leola E. Maples
Leola E. Maples, 98, of Homer, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. 
She was born January 3, 1906, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, to Christopher and Clara (Halverson) Gagnon.
She married Richard C. Maples on June 24, 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1967.
Mrs. Maples was a retired school teacher who taught in Ironwood and Lansing before coming to Homer in 1936, where she taught for 22 years. She was a charter member of the Garden Club, Eastern Star and the Homer Bible Study Group. She attended the First Baptist Church of Tekonsha and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cross stitching, reading, her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Roger (Patty) Maples of Homer and Robin (Grace) Maples of Colorado; two sisters, Gladys Owen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Billie Just of Illinois; a brother, Ted Gagnon of Washington; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard L., three brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service was held Thursday, July 29, at First Baptist Church in Tekonsha, with the Revs. David McGrady and Larry Fulton officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the FFA Alumni of Homer.

William A. Booth
William A. Booth, 83, of Burlington, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at his home.
He was born October 15, 1920, in Clarendon Township, to Howard and Florence (Hawkins) Booth.
He  married  Virginia Howell on April 2, 1950. She preceded him in death July 13, 1995. He married Ruth Fox November 30, 1996. She survives.
He grew up in the Homer area and spent most of his life in the Burlington/Union City area.
Mr. Booth was a World War II veteran serving in the Middle East, 57th Fighter Group Squadron 66 of the Army Air Force from January 5, 1942 to September 20, 1945.
Mr. Booth was a farmer, milk hauler and retired from Eaton Corporation.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Union City and sang in the church choir. He loved flowers, bird watching and fishing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by a son, Allen G. (Sandy) Booth of Sherwood; stepsons, David (Kay) Howell of Niles, Roger (Cheryl) Fox of Grand Rapids, and Ronald  (Sandy) Fox of Battle Creek; stepdaughters, Rebecca (Greg) Johnson of Kalamazoo, and Cindy (Tony) Troup of Waterloo, Illinois; a brother, Robert (Ruth) Booth, of Jonesville.
In addition to his first wife, Virginia, Mr. Booth was preceded in death by two brothers, David and George Booth.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church, Union City, followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery, Union City.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church stained glass restoration.
Arrangements were handled by the Putnam Funeral Home, Union City.

Albert A. Snipes
Albert A. Snipes, 87, of Homer, died July 28, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. 
He was born November 14, 1916, to James Thomas and Elizabeth Jane (Leek) Snipes in Bonanza, Kentucky.
He married Hazel Hackworth on January 17, 1937, and she preceded him in death December 17, 1995.
Mr. Snipes was a supervisor for General Motors for 33 years before retiring. He moved to Homer in 1962. 
He attended Fellowship Baptist Church for more than 20 years and enjoyed woodworking and reading his Bible. He cared about people and was known for his generosity.
Mr. Snipes is survived by daughters, Lillian (Junior) Butler of Springport, Jean (Richard) Smith of Homer, and Barb (Richard) Dittis of Albion; sons, James (Jaynell) Snipes of Dearborn Heights and Tommy (Charlene) Snipes of Phoenix, Arizona; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.
A funeral service was held Monday, August 2, 2004, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Homer.

Robert John Rutkoskie
Robert John Rutkoskie, 91, of Jackson, died at Countryside Care Center Saturday, July 31, 2004.
He was born January 14, 1913, in St. Joseph to Cassimer and Stella (Abbott) Rutkoskie, Jr.
Mr. Rutkoskie married Doris Strouts June 3, 1939, and she preceded him in death in 1998. 
He served his country in WWII in the Navy and made the Navy his career, retiring after 33 years. He then worked as a Maintenance Engineer at Albion Hospital until his retirement. 
He was a member of Elks and attended St. John Catholic Church. He enjoyed dancing, cards, bowling and horseback riding.
He is survived by a daughter, Pam (John) Holt of Terrebonne, Oregon; a son, Richard (Carol) Rutkoskie of Albion; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. There was no visitation.

Ginger M. Pace
Ginger M. Pace, 33, of Albion, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at her home.
She was born June 23, 1971, in Albion, to William Edward and Zelmaglee (Ratliff) Tackett. 
She married Michael Pace June 27, 1987, and he survives.
Mrs. Pace was an instructor who trained employees for Hi-Lex Controls Inc. in Litchfield for 15 years. She was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church of Albion and enjoyed handcrafts and spending time with her daughters.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her parents, of Homer; a grandmother, Liza Jean Allen of Albion; daughters, Amber, Kelee and Dehanna Pace, all of Albion; a brother, Billy Tackett of Homer; several aunts and uncles; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 9, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Grace Freewill Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Dorothy C. Egnatuk
Dorothy C. Egnatuk, 78, of Marshall, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at Marshall Manor.
Mrs. Egnatuk was born May 23, 1926, in Albion, to Walter and Josephine (Kinmont) Kittinger. 
She married Paul Egnatuk April 21, 1945, and he preceded her in death December 8, 1996.
Mrs. Egnatuk was a school library aide for the Homer Community Schools. She enjoy-ed gardening, reading, knitting, crocheting, sewing, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and especially her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Paula Egnatuk of Mt. Pleasant and Josephine (Ron) Ducheney of Marshall; two sons, Ivan (Debbie) Egnatuk of Marshall and Alan (Michelle K.) Egnatuk of Battle Creek; six grandchildren, Paul (Tara) Egnatuk, Alec (Elizabeth) Egnatuk, Tim Ducheney, Mark (Paige) Ducheney, J. Morgan (Jennifer) Egnatuk and Michelle H. Egnatuk; four step-grandchildren, Amy Ducheney (Rob) Dempsey, Doug (Judy) Ducheney, John (Becky) Beckwith and Jeff (Tracy) Beckwith; and nine great-grandchildren, Madison, Rylan, Alexandra, Natalia, Violet, Wesley, Amanda, Spencer and Nicole.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Mary Miller and Jeanne Curtiss.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held Tuesday, August 10, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Mar-shall, with the Rev. Leonard Brinkmoeller officiating.

Sue Ann Nevins
Sue Ann Nevins, 68, of Mesa, Arizona, peacefully passed away Monday, August 9, 2004, in her home after a brief illness.
She was born November 14, 1935, in Charlotte. She was the next to youngest child of five to Delmar Everett and Flora Della (Mileham) Steinman. 
Mrs. Nevins graduated from Charlotte High School in 1954 and was also named their basketball queen that year. She was united in marriage to Rex Harris Nevins on August 20, 1954, in Charlotte. He survives.
She held many employment positions throughout her life, but her most fulfilling work was being a wife and mother. She loved her roses, hummingbirds and the Arizona Diamondbacks.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be greatly missed by the many whose lives she touched.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters, Wendy (Mike) Pratley of Frankfort and Pam (Charles) Hoaglin of Salem, Ohio; sons, Randal (Laurie) Nevins of Concord, Brian (Lori) Nevins of Marshall, Rex (Jaye) Nevins of Three Rivers, and Mike (Kris) Nevins of Homer; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;  brothers Russell Nevins of Palmetto, Florida, Edwin (Dorothy) Nevins of LaGrange, Illinois, and Frances Nevins of Indianapolis, Indiana;  brothers-in-law, Ray (Mary) Nevins of Tustin, Roy Nevins and Robert Nevins of Charlotte, and Gerald Fetterman of Springport; and many nieces and nephews. 
She was preceded in death by a son, David Lee, her parents, and a sister, Lorene.
A celebration of her life will be announced with the date and location at a later time.

David Frank Daugherty
David Frank Daugherty, 29, of Homer (formerly of Jackson), died unexpectedly Friday, August 13, 2004.
He was born August 31, 1974, to Pearlis and Ruth (Hunter) Daugherty in S. Williamson, Kentucky.
He graduated from Western High School in 1992. He married Amy Rachele Tyjewski October 11, 2003, and she survives.
Mr. Daugherty was employed as a machinist at TAC in Jackson. He had formerly enjoyed working in retail sales for Circuit City in Jackson.
He was well known to friends and family as a sports fanatic, especially baseball, football, golf and basketball.
As a young man, he belonged to the 4-H and FFA of Jackson.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but especially by his namesake grandfather, David Frank Hunter of Parma, who raised him as a son after his father passed away.
In addition to his wife and grandfather, Mr. Daugherty is survived by two sons, Darrin and Zachary Marshall of Homer; his mother, Ruth (James Lanny) Baldridge of Parma; grandmother, Hazel Daugherty of Lynn, West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pearlis Daugherty; grandmother, Velma Hunter; and grandfather, the Rev. Willie Daugherty.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, August 18, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastors Greg Vincent and Jim Snyder officiating.

Wave G. Rice
Wave G. Rice, 84, died September 4, 2004, in the loving care of her family in Homer. 
She was born February 7, 1920, to George and Teena McAdam. 
She married Gerald N. Rice, Sr., January 1, 1938. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Rice is survived by three daughters, Joyce Schneider, Shirley (Richard) Howe and Beverly Weber; eight grandchildren, Gerald (Kim) Rice II, Kerry Brown, Kim (Tim) Wright, Deborah (Don) Van Ells, Wendy (Jim) Abbott, Sherrill (Wade) Turner, Willis (Ann) Howe and Jamie (Wallace) Brown; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Michael and Donna Chamberlain.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers; a son, Gerald Jr.; a granddaughter, Mary Ellen Weber; a grandson, Jerry M. Myrick; and a son-in-law, Robert Weber.
According to Mrs. Rice's wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services were to be held.

Ervin L. Root
Ervin L. Root, 83, of Englewood, Ohio, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at Harborside of Troy Health Care Center in Troy, Ohio.
Mr. Root served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Decker Manufacturing after many years of service. He was a member and very active in the Albion Assembly of God Church. From the late 1950s through the late 1970s he was a deacon, an usher, Sunday school teacher and involved in the children's bus ministry.
Mr. Root is survived by Emma, his loving wife of 63 years; a daughter, Bonnie Milby; three grandchildren, Melinda (Jim) Tomlinson, Phil Bold and Elizabeth Root; five great-grandchildren, Josh, Avery, Lindsi, Philip and Jasmine; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son Louis Root.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 10, at Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel, 208 West Erie Street in Albion, with Pastor Curt Dalaba officiating.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home North Chapel in Dayton, Ohio.

Martha J. Porter
Martha J. Porter, 79, of Litchfield, died Friday, September 10, 2004, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Porter was born February 15, 1925,  in Detroit, to Harvey and Helen (Squires) Randolph. 
She married Walter Campbell in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1963. She married Elmer Porter in 1971, and he preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Porter graduated from Jonesville High School and served as an organist and pianist for the Mosherville Community Church and the Litchfield Nursing Centre for many years. she belonged to the Litchfield Belles and will be remembered by many for her booklets of poems and inspiration she assembled and shared with the community. She was an avid seamstress and loved sewing.
Survivors include a daughter, Sue (Don) Failing of Litchfield; two grandchildren, Kyle Failing and Kristen (Dr. Michael) Miller, both of Litchfield; a great-grandchild, Luke Miller of Litchfield; two brothers, Joe (Jean) Randolph of Arizona, and Doug (Jan) Randolph of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition two her two husbands, Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Campbell; and a sister Ruth Engle.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 14, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Frank Winterhalter officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Geraldine F. O'Dell
Geraldine F. O'Dell, 78, of Homer, died Thursday, September 9, 2004, at Sparrow Health Systems in Lansing.
Ms. O'Dell was born June 21, 1926, in Albion to Lawrence and Lottie (Morgan) O'Dell. She lived in the Calhoun County area all of her life. She was a homemaker who enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and feeding animals and birds.
She is survived by daughters Delores "Jeannie" (Willie) Jones and Sandra (James) Mulkey, both of Albion; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gerald (Mildred) O'Dell of Olivet.
She was preceded in death by sisters Ethel Strange and Doris O'Dell; a brother, Vernon O'Dell; and a great-grandson, Eugene Mulkey.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 13, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Steve Meszaros officiating.
Burial followed in Cook Prairie Cemetery in Homer.

Stacey Putnam
Stacey Putnam, 28, of Jackson, died Saturday, September 25, 2004. She was born September 28, 1975, in Peoria, Illinois, to George and Sue Ann (Whiting) Stovall.
She married Michael L. Putnam May 13, 1995, and he survives.
Mrs. Putnam was a registered nurse and clinical director for Southern Care, Inc. She was previously employed by Heartland Hospice. She served in the Army National Guard, was an assistant Girl Scout leader, a cheerleading coach for Michigan Center and enjoyed scrapbooking, the outdoors and was very active with children. She was a very devoted wife and mother.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Kaleigh and Brooklyn Putnam of Jackson; a son, Gavin Putnam of Jackson; her parents, George and Sue Ann Stovall of Jackson; three sisters, Katrina Stovall of Angola, Indiana, and Elaine and Robin Stovall of Jackson; and a brother, Daniel Stovall of Jackson.

Barbara Craven
Barbara Craven, 60, of Homer, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. 
She was born October 13, 1943, in Albion, to A. J. and Dorothy (Andrews) Rising.
She married Robert Craven June 24, 1961, and he survives.
Mrs. Craven worked as a layout person for K Mart in Marshall for several years, as well as at Cascarelli's Pizza and K. C. Kid Care in Homer. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, reading, collecting Fenton glass and antiquing.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Lynnette (Rick) Tilton of Grand Rapids, Karen (Bern) Bates of Homer, and Melissa Craven of Homer; two sons, Kevin Craven of Homer, and Michael (Lori) Craven of Quincy; a sister, Andrea (Charles) Craven of Homer; and six grandchildren, Meaghan, Ariel, BreAnna, Jayden, ShyAnn and Braden.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, October 5, at 4 p.m., at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Homer.

Charles C. Tobias
Charles C. Tobias, 83, of Albion, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 1, 2004.
He was born July 15, 1921, in Tracey, Montana, to Charles and Klara (Toth) Tobias, and moved to Michigan at the age of six.
Mr. Tobias was a WWII veteran and received a purple heart after serving his country on the Pacific front for three years. He married Ruth Bushong March 31, 1946. She survives. They enjoyed many years of creating a home together and partnering in their business venture, antiquing, in Shipshewana, Indiana.
An employee of Union Steel for 40 years, Mr. Tobias took great pride in service on the union committee and as union president. He was active in his community, serving on the Tamarack School Board and United Way Committee. Dearly loved by his family and friends, he will be fondly remembered for his love of Sunday family gatherings, treats for his grandchildren and his special connection to nature and wildlife that he shared with his children. He also enjoyed gardening, berry picking, fishing with his son and son-in-law, and deer hunting with his son. Mr. Tobias made each family member important and lived by the motto "He never knew a stranger."
In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by two daughters, Illona (Terry) McKown and Anita (Gary) Watkins; a son, Charles (Amy) Tobias; nine grandchildren, Amy K. (Tim) Conway, Stephanie and Courtney Watkins, Alison (Glenn) McRae, Terry T. McKown, Kyle A McKown, Jessica Ritchie, Patrick and Alison Melling; two great-grandchildren, Sheridan and Chloe Conway; a sister, Helen (Tobias) Berry; and a brother, Steven Tobias.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Emma (Tobias) Plaza and beloved son-in-law Terry D. McKown.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Dewayne Bagley officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens.

Olive M. Thomas
Olive M. Thomas, 98, of Coldwater, died Thursday, September 30, 2004, at Masonville in Coldwater. 
Mrs. Thomas was born March 29, 1906, in Clarendon Town-ship, to Herbert and Margaret (Curry) Humphrey.
She married Emmet W. Thomas May 27, 1927. He preceded her in death in 1948.
Mrs. Thomas lived in the Branch County area most of her life. During World War II she worked at Hillsdale Manufacturing and then worked at the former Coldwater State Home/Regional Center for 23 years as an attendant nurse, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Coldwater First Baptist Church, where she had belonged to the Rebekah Circle, and she was a former Candy Striper at the Community Health Center. Mrs. Thomas enjoyed bird watching, knitting and reading. She loved spending time with her family, especially her many grandchildren.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by her children, Charles (Shirley) Thomas of Plymouth, James (Lois) Thomas of Coldwater, K. Jean (Cecil) Paradine of Tekonsha, Margaret Gilbert of Rose-burg, Oregon; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Thomas of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; a sister, Elsie Smith of Homer; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and special friend Marjorie Nedell of New Jersey.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by son Tom Thomas in 1981; two brothers, Rex and Carl Humphrey; a sister, Bessie Smith; and a son-in-law, Dr. Robert Gilbert.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at noon at Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater, with Pastor John Scott of the Girard United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Robert W. Thompson Sr.
Robert W. Thompson Sr., 89, of Albion, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at Tendercare of Albion. 
He was born October 12, 1914, in Homer, to Warren and Effie (Adams) Thompson. 
Mr. Thompson married Laura L. Howes in 1935 in Auburn, Indiana. She preceded him in death March 19, 1995.
Mr. Thompson was a resident of Calhoun County all his life. He grew up on a farm in the Homer area and became involved in farming until going to work at the Homer Creamery. He purchased Young's Elevator in Albion in the late 1930s, and also was a partner with his brother in Concord at Thompson's Elevator. He was involved in the operation of other elevators in the area until 1962 when he became partners with his son at Thompson's Brake Service in Albion until he retired in 1972. 
His hobbies included gardening, hunting, fishing and woodworking, especially carving ducks. He also loved his garden.
Mr. Thompson is survived by two sons, Robert W. (Jenny) Thompson Jr. of Albion and George (Jewel) Thompson of Cullman, Alabama; a daughter, Barbara (Franklin T. "Jack") Pittman of Cullman, Alabama; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Thompson of Delton; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a special friend and companion, Wilma Snyder of Albion; a sister, Marjorie Bramble of Albion; and a brother, Elbert (Jerri) Thompson of Florida.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard in 2003; a grandson, Jeff Thompson; a step-grandson, Mike Love; a brother, Russell Thompson; and a sister, Kathrine Hoaglin.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Fr. Ed Scully officiating. Interment took place at Albion Memory Gardens.

Edward Mestdagh
Edward Mestdagh, 77, of Homer, died Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at Litchfield Nursing Home in Litchfield.
He was born June 18, 1927, in Jackson, to Hector and Emily Mestdagh. 
Mr. Mestdagh married Aura Lee Whitcomb October 20, 1950, and she survives.
He worked on the family farm prior to becoming service manager for Folk Oil Company for 30 years. He was a member of The Beer Can Collectors Club of America. Mr. Mestdagh enjoyed gardening, antiques and drinking beer with his brother-in-law Vic.
In addition to his wife, Lee Mestdagh of Homer, he is survived by two sons, Sam (Vicki) Mestdagh and Jamie (Cara) Mestdagh, all of Homer; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Mestdagh and Kaye Mestdagh, both of Homer; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary; two brothers, Kenneth and Robert; and a son, Danny.
A funeral service was held Saturday, October 9, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with Father Gordon Greene officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Leo Dell Gordon
Leo Dell Gordon, 83, of Homer, died Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital.
He was born December 30, 1920, in Albion, to Dell Marsh and Nora Mae (Thorn) Gordon.
Mr. Gordon married Clarice Collyer January 16, 1954, and she survives.
Mr. Gordon was a draftsman for the Union Steel Products Company and a grounds keeper for Albion College, where he retired. He enjoyed gardening, raising bees, bird watching, tinkering, wildlife and traveling.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda K. Gordon of Albion; a son, Daryl (Martha) Gordon of Petersburg, Virginia; five grandchildren, H. R. McKim, William McKim, Erin "McKim" Jaques, J. W. Gordon and Maria Gordon; three great-grandchildren, Destiny, A. J. and Jordan; and a sister, Mae Sleight of Albion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Judith Kay Murray
Judith Kay Murray, 61, of Kinston, North Carolina, died Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Murray was a homemaker, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a life member of the veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a son Robert E. (Dana) Murray of Coldwater; two daughters, Dawn M. (Mick) Obenour of Hanover, and Brenda L. Murray and special friend Juan Whitfield of Kinston; her father and stepmother, Harley and Wanda Worthington of Jackson; two brothers, James Worthington of Homer and Harley Worthington Jr. of Jackson; a sister, Jeanne Jones of Suttons Bay; grandchildren Jo Lyn, Amanda, Jamie, David, Hunter and Austin; and great-grandchildren Chelsea and Ashton. 
Mrs. Murray was preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Murray and mother Rolene Worthington.
A memorial service will be held at Cook's Prairie Baptist Church in Homer Saturday, October 16, at 10 a.m.

Bethel Maxine Mansfield
Bethel Maxine Mansfield, 83, of Homer, died Wednesday, October 13, 2004, at Hillsdale Community Health Center.
She was born June 6, 1921, in Charlotte, to Glen and Madge (Williams) Britten.
She married Ernest L. Mansfield February 21, 1942, and he survives.
In addition to being a homemaker, Maxine was a phone operator several years for the Homer phone company. She was a member of Homer Presbyterian Church and its Women's Circle and Homer Extension Club.
She enjoyed camping, gardening, crafts and arranging dried flowers.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Carol (Robert) Yinger of Homer; a son, Gary (Jean) Mansfield of Marshall; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenwood and Robert Britten; and a son, Craig Mansfield.
A funeral service was held Monday, October 18, at George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Homer.

Jeffery Eugene Hackworth
Jeffery Eugene Hackworth, 43, of Homer, died Thursday, October 14, 2004. 
Mr. Hackworth was born April 12, 1961, in Albion, to Vern and Blanche (Hall) Hackworth.
He was a foundry worker for Harvard Industries and enjoyed deer hunting, antiques, country music and shooting pool.
Mr. Hackworth is survived by his fiancé, Shelby Neeley of Marshall; three sisters, Sue Tompkins of Marshall, Jan Brown of Hastings and Jane Marlow of Battle Creek; four brothers, Dan Hackworth of Albion, John Hackworth of Pennsylvania, Jerry Hackworth of Homer and Lee Hackworth of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death  by his parents and a brother.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 18, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. Ron Hackworth officiating. Interment followed at River-side Cemetery.

Carrie Ann Lykins
Carrie Ann Lykins, 53, of Albion, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, at home. 
She was born May 23, 1951, in Winamac, Indiana, and graduated from Winamac High School and Manchester College, becoming a school teacher and head teller at Chemical Bank.
She married Danny Lykins December 8, 1973, and he survives.
Mrs. Lykins belonged to Fellowship Baptist Church and enjoyed hobbies of sewing, crocheting, camping and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Charity (Kevin) Robinette of Homer; a son, Mathew (Karri) Lykins of Woodland; two grandchildren; her parents, Robert and Betty Wilcox of Monterey, Indiana; a sister, Carol Chapman of Monterey, Indiana; and her father-in-law, Lionel Lykins of Albion.
She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Irene Lykins.
Funeral services are to be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with the Revs. Jim Snyder, Greg Vincent and Earl Martin officiating. Bennie Conley
Bennie Conley, 72, of Hillsdale, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. 
He was born June 16, 1933, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Ellis and Mae (Marshall) VanHoose. 
Mr. Conley had been employed at the Mansfield Street Department, Homer Foundry and Howard Huffman Farms. He belonged to the Hillsdale City Church. 
He married Madeline Curry February 21, 1953, and she preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Conley is survived by two daughters, Kathryn (Roy) Peiffer of Hillsdale and Donna (Ronald) Barnett of Jonesville; three sons, William Conley of Litchfield, Bennie Lee (Genieve) Conley of Gilmore, Texas, and Ellis Ray (Brenda) Conley of Angola, Indiana; a sister, Ruth Binion of Lansing; a brother, Laskie VanHoose of Kodack, Tennessee; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; an aunt, Annie Merica; a special friend, Rhonda Sammons of Hillsdale; and a dear friend and home health aid, Carol Lattas.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Paul and Calvin, and two brothers, Hobart and Thomas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with Pastor Randy Rathert officiating. Interment will follow in Bentley's Corner Cemetery, Calhoun County.

Ralph P. Houghton
Ralph P. Houghton, 87, of Duck Lake, died October 27, 2004, at his home.
He was born July 27, 1917, in Mount Clemens, to Ralph H. and Virginia (Phillips) Houghton. 
Mr. Houghton enjoyed music, playing the violin, clarinet, saxophone and hammered dulcimer.
He worked as an industrial engraver, woodworker and general machinist. He also had a keen interest in firearms, particularly black powder ones. 
Mr. Houghton graduated from Homer High School in 1935. He later moved with his parents to Albion. He attended Western Michigan prior to entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in WWII as a radio communications instructor and as a B-25 pilot. He moved to Litchfield, where he started an electrical contracting business until moving to Florida in 1960 to help with the family industrial tool and die engraving business (Aeromark Corporation). In 1968, he left the firm and with three others, started American Marine Products, where he served as CEO for 27 years before retiring to private practice. 
He was an active member of the Rotary Club in every community he worked in. He supported the Litchfield Community Schools a number of years as leader of the local board of education. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic order in Franklin Lodge #40, F&AM at Litchfield, where he served as master.  
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard (in infancy) and John E. Houghton; a daughter-in-law, Ila Marie (Williams) Houghton; a daughter, Sp4 Betty L. Hough-ton; and his devoted wife of 52 years, Catherine M. (Hakes) Houghton.
He is survived by a brother, George L. (Marty) Houghton of Lake Placid, Florida; daughters Nancy L. Owens (John) of Lake Worth, Florida, and Mary H. Houghton of Duck Lake; a son Ralph H. (Betty) Houghton of Albion; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.  
Funeral services were held at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel Saturday, October 30, with the Rev.  Daniel McQuown  officiating. Masonic Lodge services Humanity Lodge # 29 F&A.M. of Homer will follow. Burial will take place at Cooks Prairie Cemetery.

Linda Worden
Linda Worden, 63, of Homer, died at her residence Sunday, October 24, 2004.  
She was born July 28, 1941, in Pontiac, to John M. and Margaret Ann (Karcher) Worden.  
Ms. Worden was a lifelong resident of Homer who could often be found showing her support for Homer school athletics, most notably the Homer softball team. She had a love for all animals and enjoyed many senior outings. She also took pleasure in spending time with friends eating and socializing at the Knife and Fork Restaurant.  
Ms. Worden is survived by many loving family members and friends.  
According to her wishes cremation has taken place.  
A graveside service will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Homer, Thursday at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating.  
Memorial contributions may be made to the Calhoun County Humane Society.  Arrangements were entrusted to the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.

Martha Pitts
Martha M. Pitts, 71, of Litchfield, died Monday, November 1, 2004, at her home. 
She was born September 30, 1933, in Hillsdale County, to Henry and Lydia (Baker) Horn and graduated from Litchfield High School.
She married Harold Pitts April 2, 1960, and he survives.
Mrs. Pitts had been employed at State Farm Insurance Co., Plymouth Flush Door, and retired from Litchfield Community Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria.
She belonged to the Wednesday evening Mothers' Club, Litchfield Garden Club, and attended Litchfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth (Clay) Guy of Jonesville and Betty Boulis of Midland; four brothers, Richard (Nancy) Horn, Donald (Marilyn) Horn and Charles (Diane) Horn, all of Litchfield, and Harry (Tia) Horn of Jonesville; a daughter-in-law, Karen Kellogg of Colorado; two step-grandchildren, Genie (Todd) Connaghan and Monique Weldon, both of Colorado; and three step-great-grandchildren, Bryce and Hunter Connaghan and Gavin Markus Weldon.
Mrs. Pitts was preceded in death by a son, Mark Allen Pitts, and a brother, Billy Horn.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 6, at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. John R. Thompson officiating.
Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.

Deanna Clay
Deanna Clay, 46, of Homer, died Monday, November 1, 2004, at her home. 
She was born May 15, 1958, in Manistique, to Ivon and Romaine (Segerstrom) Mohn.
She married Earl Clay, and he preceded her in death in 2000.
Mrs. Clay was a homemaker and a nurse's aid for Spring Arbor Manor. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Cooks. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Gail (Greg) Vincent of Jonesville; a stepdaughter, Lori Foust of Hillsdale; two sons, Darin (Traci) Clay of Concord and James Clay of Homer; a step-son, Earl Clay of Jackson; two sisters, Debbie (Harold) Heath of Homer, and Colleen Mohn of Rapid River; three brothers, James Mohn and Tim Segerstrom, both of Saginaw, and David Mohn of Homer; and 18 grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Nick Mohn, and a sister, Dawn Mohn.
A funeral service was held Friday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion.

Ronald Lazarus
Ronald Lazarus, 47, of Homer, died Thursday, November 4, 2004, at his home. 
He was born March 12, 1957, in Albion, to Rolland and Edith (Lighthill) Lazarus. 
Mr. Lazarus married Debora Warner and she survives.
He was employed as a machinist for Mid Michigan Metal Co. and Team One Plastics.
Mr. Lazarus enjoyed computers, music and movies.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his parents, of Homer; stepsons, Jeremiah, Brian and Nicholas Ballinger, all of Albion; a brother, Jerry Lazarus of Jonesville; and two step-grandchildren, Shane and Simon.

Gladys "Pauline" Tech
Gladys "Pauline" Tech, 68, of Litchfield, died Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre.
She was born in Homer Township October 22, 1936, to Frank and Wilma (Keck) Slagle.
She married Donald Tech January 23, 1956, in Homer. He survives. 
Mrs. Tech was a resident of Calhoun and Hillsdale counties all her life. She was a homemaker and she enjoyed traveling.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Tech is survived by several nieces and nephews and a beloved dachshund, Odie.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Winona Stull, Dolly Slagle, Charlotte Merica; and a brother, Leroy Slagle.
A graveside service was held Monday, November 8, at St. Joseph Cemetery in Homer, with the Revs. Rob Colon and Minerva Brown officiating.

Gary Lee Dilts
Gary Lee Dilts, 58, of Homer Township, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at home. 
Mr. Dilts was born September 5, 1946, in Albion, to Leroy and Delores (Blakley) Dilts. He married the former Elaine Coulson May 19, 2001. She survives.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Mr. Dilts had been employed at Lakeshore Products in Quincy. His hobbies included woodworking, auto mechanics, being outdoors enjoying camping and bonfires, and he had an avid interest in Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Sgt. Matthew (Diane) Coulson and infant grandson Dante, stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army; a sister, Darlene Watson of Tekonsha; four brothers, Bruce (Dot) Waterman of South Carolina, Cliff (Darlene) Hall of Owosso, and Mark (Terry) Hall and Jon (Chris) Hall, all of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepfather, James Hall.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 12, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Interment followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Deborah Simms
Deborah Simms, 49, of Homer, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
She was born November 19, 1954, in Albion, to James H. and Shirley A. (Swafford) Shilling. 
Ms. Simms was a dispatcher for the trucking industry for several years. She lived in Nevada and Toledo, Ohio, for several years before moving back to this area last year.
She was a member of the Teamsters Union and enjoyed working with stained glass, sewing, doing volunteer work, cooking and getting together with family. She was a very creative person.
Mrs. Simms is survived by her mother, Shirley Shilling of Homer; a daughter, Alison Simms of Monroe, Ohio; a son, Tyler Simms of Hillsdale; a sister, Deanne (John) Fish of Homer; two brothers, Douglas (Karen) Shilling of Homer, and David (Pam) Shilling of Culpepper, Virginia; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A funeral service was held Sunday, November 14, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with the Rev. William Cole officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Frank Howe Benham
Frank Howe Benham, 70, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at his home near Laingsburg. 
He was born December 18, 1933, in Homer, to Frank E. and Helen H. Benham.
Mr. Benham was married for 44 years to Dorothy (Shoe-maker), and she survives.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his family.
After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in animal husbandry, he was commissioned to the United States Naval Reserves as an ensign, a position he held for eight years. He then pursued a career in the beef industry as a fitter and shower of purebred cattle, showing them throughout the United States and Canada. He was the herdsman for Michigan State University for four of those years.
He organized his business, Great Lakes Agri Supply, in 1981, near Laingsburg, and was active in the business until his death. He and his son, Doug, sold and erected many grain-handling systems throughout the state and had many loyal customers who will greatly miss him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Susan J. Benjamin of Perry, Jody L. Benham of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Shannon J. (Chris) Bishop of Mason, and Frank Douglas (Anne) Benham of Ovid; two sisters, Louise Bartell of Midland and Ruth Pulsipher of Battle Creek; two brothers, Maurice (Helen) Benham of Homer and George (Margot) of Mesa, Arizona; 14 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Howard Benham, formerly of Ceresco; and a sister, Mary Bush, formerly of Florida.
A memorial service was held Saturday, November 13, at Perry Baptist Church, with Pastor Jim Carrell officiating.

Charles J. Cole, Sr.
Charles J. Cole, Sr., died Friday, November 12, 2004.
Mr. Cole retired from Clark Equipment after 34 years. He was a veteran of World War II, a former elder in the Concord Presbyterian Church and an avid gardener.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Susan (Douglas) Cook of Tekonsha and Janet (Chuck) Lyons of Hanover; a son, Chuck (Betty) Cole of Concord; a sister, Georgia Cochran of Jackson; grandchildren  Peter and Susan Cook of Dallas, Heather and Derek Wingfield of Lexington, Kentucky, Alex Cook of Lexington, Tom and Elizabeth Day of Concord, Sarah and Corey Vowels of Lansing, David Day of Concord, Charles Cole of Concord, Summer Cole of Dearborn Heights, and Steve and Brianne Sinden of Concord; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother William Cole.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 16, at the S.D. Lauer Funeral Home in Concord, with the Rev. Scott Scheel officiating. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Harry "Al" Hammond
Harry "Al" Hammond, 90, of Homer, died Monday, November 15, 2004, at Tendercare of Marshall.  
Mr. Hammond was born July 10, 1914, in Olivet, to Ross E.  and Gladys (Walkenshaw) Hammond. He married Ola Ball  January 10, 1939, in Clarendon Township.  She survives. He was a resident of the area for more than 50 years.    
Mr. Hammond was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star in Homer. He enjoyed square dancing.  
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Jerry A. (Rose) Hammond of Ocala, Florida, and Grant (Charissa) Hammond of Oakdale, Connecticut; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Eleanore (William) Waggoneer of Weatherford, Oklahoma; a cousin, Lois Henry of Marshall; a niece; and several nephews.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.  
Masonic memorial services will be held today (Wednesday), at 1 p.m. at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with Mr. Larry Hyde officiating.

Velma E. Knight
Velma E. Knight, 76, of St. Clair, formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at her home after an extended illness.
She was born August 14, 1928, to Glen and Jessie (Brown) Sloan. 
Mrs. Knight worked as a waitress at several restaurants in the Homer and Battle Creek area, then as a spray painter at Vacumet in Marine City before retiring in 1993.
She is survived by three children, Loren Knight of St. Clair, Nolan (Pat) Knight of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Portia (Larry) Hyde of Homer; and four grandchildren, James McAllister, Dana Knight, Jessica Hyde and James Hyde.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 20, at L. C. Friederichs and Son Funeral Home, St. Clair. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery in East China.

Barbara Turner
Barbara Turner, 60, of Albion, formerly of Jackson, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, at her home. 
She was born July 8, 1944, in Hillsdale County, to Neil and Aurelia (Wallace) Fogg.
She married Travis Turner March 3, 1988, and he preceded her in death in 1999. 
Mrs. Turner was employed by American One Credit Union and Felpausch Food Center in Jackson for several years. She was a member of Eagles Lodge in Jackson and enjoyed shopping and sharing with people.
She is survived by her mother, Aurelia Fogg Purucker of Battle Creek; a daughter, Kim (Todd) Schoneman of Albion; three stepdaughters, Robin "Cis" Hersha of Jackson, Tina Turner of Jackson and Trish McConnell of California; three stepsons, Gale Turner, Dale (Lori) Turner and Travis (Connie) Turner, Jr., all of Jackson; a sister, Sheri (Greg) Rees of Battle Creek; two brothers, Phillip (Elouise) Fogg and Duane (Barb) Fogg, both of Battle Creek; 13 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Larry Fogg.
A funeral service was held Monday, November 22, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion.

George E. Leach
George E. Leach, 92, of Marshall, formerly of Homer, died November 20, 2004, at Oaklawn Hospital, after a courageous battle with diabetes and cancer.
Mr. Leach was born July 7, 1912, in Fredonia Township, to Espie W. and Maggie D. (Nelson) Leach. He married Ruth N. Kenyon January 3, 1931, in Angola, Indiana, and she survives.
He farmed for many years in both Fredonia and Eckford Townships. He retired in 1976 from Permabilt Manufactured Homes after 15 years of service. He had previously worked at Clark Equipment in Battle Creek, Crowell Carton, Oliver Aviation, Marshall Lumber, Marshall Public Schools, New York Central, Albion Malleable and Marshall Furnace Company.
Mr. Leach was a member of Marshall's First Baptist Church, and was a past member of the Fredonia Grange and St. Albans Lodge #20 F & AM.
In addition to his wife of 73 years, Mr. Leach is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Anthony) VanDenberg of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Patricia (Verser) White of Saugatuck; two sons, Michael G. Leach and Thomas L. (Margaret) Leach, both of Marshall; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Edward, and a sister, Dena Nichols Newman.
Funeral services celebrating his life were held Monday, November 22, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with the Rev. John Rowe officiating. Interment followed in Lyon Lake Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Matthew Leach, Kim Leach, Jim Leach, Randy Leach, John Leach, Brad White, S. Sgt. Jason VanDenberg and Joel White. Doug Leach, Todd White and Norman Leach served as honorary bearers.

Verl Marsh Young
Verl Marsh Young, 87, of Albion, died Sunday, November 21, 2004, in Alma, at the Masonic Pathways, surrounded by her family.
She was born July 13, 1917, in Albion, to Wilber and Fern (Dunn) Marsh, and was raised in Litchfield. 
She married Charles H. "Bob" Young June 21, 1941, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and he survives.
Mrs. Young attended Western Michigan University and Cleary Business College and was the private secretary to Senator Towne at the Capitol in Lansing. 
Mrs. Young devoted her life to raising her children and working with her husband in their clothing store, Young's Apparel. She was a member of Eastern Star Vivian's, First Presbyterian Church of Albion, belonged to several bridge clubs and was involved with the PTA. She enjoyed flower gardening and traveling.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Marsha (David) Whitestone of Springfield, Virginia, Cynthia Y. Taber of Mt. Pleasant, Merrily J. Boertmann of Brighton, and Julie (Tim) Peace of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Barry (Debbie) Young of Champaign, Illinois; a sister, Marjorie Whitehead of Mason; a brother, Wilbur (Kay) Marsh of Vermontville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Griffiths, and a brother, Fay E. Marsh.
A private funeral service was held at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with Cheryl Engle officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Bernard J. Pietrewicz
Bernard J. (Bernie) Pietrewicz died unexpectedly Thursday, December 2, 2004, at his home.
Mr. Pietrewicz was the owner of Bernie's Tavern in Homer for 21 years. 
There will be a memorial celebration at the restaurant at a later date.

Wilma L. Elser
Wilma L. Elser, 92, longtime Litchfield resident, died Sunday, December 12, 2004, at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. 
She was born June 19, 1912, in Butler Township, to Bert and Mabel (Rossman) VanPatten. 
She married Samuel Ervin Elser December 29, 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1999.
A graduate of Eastern Michigan Normal College (EMU), Mrs. Elser became a teacher at the Litchfield Community Schools, Sand Creek, Whig Center, and the Manor Foundation in Jonesville.
Mrs. Elser belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, the Retired Teachers Association of Litchfield, and the Litchfield First Baptist Church. 
She is survived by six children, Arlon (Shirley) Elser of Battle Creek, Krenlyn (Mick) Maquire of Seattle, Washington, Carolyn (Ron) Hollstein, Overland Park, Kansas, Sandra (Willie) Yeager of Bloomington, Illinois, Deanna Elser of Jackson, and Gregory (Eloise) Elser of Quincy; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 16, at the First Baptist Church, Litchfield, with Pastors Brent Stille and Morris Anderson officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield.
