Lizzie J. Newsome Lizzie J. Newsome, 79, of Coldwater, formerly of the Homer-Tekonsha area, died Wednesday, January 1, 2003, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. Mrs. Newsome was born December 12, 1923, in Harold, Kentucky, to Willie and Hattie Mae (Compton) Boyd. She married Charlie Newsome and he preceded her in death May 4, 2002. She was a resident of the Homer-Tekonsha area for most of her life, moving to Coldwater in 2002. She was a homemaker and attended Olivet First Assembly of God Church in Olivet. She enjoyed cooking, collecting knickknacks and gardening. Survivors include five daughters, Lona Newsome of Coldwater, Alberta (Mike) D'Water of Homer, Ardelia (Gary) McDaniel of Burlington, Annette Newsome of Homer and Rose (Van) Harvey of Bronson; five sons, Milford (Betty) Newsome of Albion, Dempsey Newsome of Coldwater, James (Sherry) Newsome of Coldwater, Mark (Debby) Newsome of Hillsdale and Chester Newsome of Homer; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Walker Boyd of Albion and Nathan Boyd of Lackey, Kentucky. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three children, Hattie Newsome, Elijah Newsome and Vada Johnson; a sister, Rebecca Adkins; and a brother, Edward Boyd. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 4, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Dough Hammond officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.
Ruth Weaver Ruth Weaver, 85, of Albion, died Thursday, January 2, 2003, at Albion Manor. Mrs. Weaver was born April 2, 1917, in Eldean, Ohio, to John and Mary (Quigg) Karn. She married Russell Weaver June 8, 1933, and he preceded her in death in 1988. She worked at J.C. Murphy in Albion and was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, camping, fishing, reading and traveling. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Cooley of Parma; two sons, Gilbert Weaver of Albion and Garry Weaver of Homer; a brother, John Karn of Lansing; two half brothers, Vic Karn of California and David Karn of Leslie; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Stinson; two sons, Richard and James; two sisters, Lucille Hamilton and Liz Jarnecke; and two brothers, Chelsea and Donald Karn. Funeral services were held Monday, January 6, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Dwayne Bagley officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice, Albion College Nature Center or the Albion Senior Center.
Joseph William Owens Joseph William Owens, infant son of Jericho Becker and Mary Sue Owens of Homer, died Friday, December 20, 2002, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. In addition to his parents, survivors include grandparents Judy Owens of Homer and Joe Becker of Ohio; great-grandfather James Monroe Patrick of Homer; and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 9, 2003, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Melvin Howard officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mary Ann Wright Mary Ann Wright, 55, of Homer, died Monday, January 6, 2003, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Wright was born December 14, 1947, to Rollie and Mossie (Ketchum) Hollon, in Hazard, Kentucky. She married James M. Wright January 29, 1966, and he survives. She came to the Home area 37 years ago. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her granddaughter, Tara. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Tommy (Maryellen) Wright of Homer; three sisters, Martha Rose Rowe of Springport, Pam Bentley of Albion and Betty Hall of Homer; a brother, Tommy Hollon of Homer; and a granddaughter, Tara Wright of Homer. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Funeral services were held Friday, January 10, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Dean A. Russell Dean A. Russell, 75, of North Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Litchfield and St. Charles, Missouri, died Sunday, January 12, 2003, at Lee Memorial Health Park Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. Mr. Russell was born June 16, 1927, in Branch County, to Arthur and Mildred (Paul) Russell. He married Isabelle Crist June 30, 1950. She survives. He attended Litchfield High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member and head usher at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Coral, Florida, a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E. and a 50-year member of the American Legion. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Judi) Russell and Robert (Betty) Russell, both of Cape Coral, Florida; four grandchildren, Kyle, Allen, David and Emma; a special daughter, Bonnie Lucas of Jonesville; two brothers-in-law, George (Vivian) Crist of Kerrville, Texas, and R. James Crist of Litchfield; an aunt, Dorothy Fogel of Litchfield; and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley A. Burt, and a brother, Carl E. Russell. A memorial service was to be held today (Wednesday) at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Coral, Florida, with the Rev. Paul Dissington officiating. Interment of ashes will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Grace United Methodist Church Mission Fund or the Litchfield United Methodist Church.

Harold F. Duncan Harold F. Duncan, 84, of Homer, died Sunday, February 2, 2003, at his home. Mr. Duncan was born November 20, 1918, in Hemlock, Ohio, to Frederick and Tressie (Moorhead) Duncan. He married Delores Hall and Mossie Hall and they preceded him in death. He married Julia Peck February 6, 1999, and she survives. Mr. Duncan served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. He was a truck driver and worked for Flint Brothers Trucking and Klump Brothers for 30 years. He retired in 1981. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Sharon (Lester) LaRoe and Kay (Tim) Wolfe, both of Hillsdale, and Tina (Steve) Avery of Homer; a daughter-in-law, Joann Duncan of Quincy; two sons, Frank (Shirley) Duncan of Quincy and Ed (Tracy) Duncan of Hillsdale; a sister, Gladys Slatzer of Logan, Ohio; four stepchildren; 27 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to his former wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Fred; three sisters, Rachel Spencer, Juanita Rowe and Hester; two brothers, Charles and Elton Duncan; a grandson; and two great-grandsons. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services are scheduled for today, February 5, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Jim Snyder officiating. Interment will follow at Albion Memory Gardens. William "Bill" E.J. Kirkbride William "Bill" E.J. Kirkbride, 61, of Homer, died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at Hillsdale Community Hospital. Mr. Kirkbride was born April 6, 1941, in Spring Arbor, to Earl H. and Dorothy H. (James) Kirkbride. He married Cindy C. Riker July 4, 1987. She survives. Mr. Kirkbride served his country during the Vietnam era from 1963-65. He was employed at Pioneer Foundry in Jackson, Calhoun Foundry while he owned and operated the Gamble's store in Homer in the 1970s. He was also employed at Jack Pulling Electric, Super Valu and True Value Hardware in Homer, and was most recently employed at Metaldyne (formerly Simpson's) in Litchfield since 1986. He also served as a part-time police officer for 15 years in Homer. Mr. Kirkbride was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed bowling and belonged to several leagues. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending children's' sporting and school events and an annual trip to their cottage in upstate New York. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Courtney Weakley, Cala Weakley and Kelsey Kirkbride, all of Homer; a son, Clark Kirkbride of Homer; two sisters, Audrey Kirkbride of Homer and Patricia Whitlock of Columbia City, Indiana; a brother, John (Bobbie) Kirkbride of Tekonsha; two grandchildren, Alexis Weakley and Kennadie Jones of Homer; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, from 5-8 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, February 19, at 4 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Don Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Harold William Tesch Harold William Tesch, 68, died Tuesday, February 11, 2003, in Adrian, after a 22 year battle with Parkinson's Disease and, more recently, Multiple Myeloma. Mr. Tesch was born March 9, 1934, in Concord, to William and Martha (Heiney) Tesch. He attended Mann Country School in Concord and then the family moved to Charlotte during the Depression. He graduated with honors from Litchfield High School in 1952. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Timothy (Carol) Tesch from Adrian and Dean (Lisa) Tesch from Paradise; seven grandchildren, Amy, Jeremiah and Jordan Tesch of Paradise, Jennifer Tesch and Gwen Elliott of Adrian, and Amy Watson of Tecumseh; two great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; three brothers, Aldin (Mary) Tesch of Litchfield, Duane (Maureen) Tesch of Jonesville and Ron (Laurie) Tesch of Tekonsha; a sister, Arlene (Kenneth) Porter of Camden; an uncle, Ned Heiney; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Funeral services were held at the Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian Saturday, February 15, with the Rev. Tim Walberg, the Rev. Steve VanWinkle and Pastor Ron King officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian, with full graveside rites conducted by the V.F.W. Annis-Fint Post #1584. Gail Wolfe-Boehmer Gail Wolfe-Boehmer, 41, of Battle Creek, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at her home in Battle Creek. Ms. Wolfe-Boehmer was born January 23, 1962, in Albion, to Edward L. and Bonnie Jean (Gardner) Wolfe. She married Jack Boehmer August 10, 1985, and their marriage ended in divorce. She was a registered nurse and worked for several area hospitals, including Albion Community Hospital, Riverside Manor, Leila Hospital and Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She enjoyed artistry, singing, watching TV and her dog, Vicki. She was a member of Who's Who of American Music. Survivors include her parents, Ed and Bonnie Wolfe of Homer; her companion, David "Bud" Moore of Battle Creek; a sister-in-law, Kathy Winston of Union City; a sister, Teresa (Jim) Schell of Battle Creek; and three brothers, Steve (Charlene) Wolfe of Homer, Ken (Kimi) Wolfe of Camden and Eddie Wolfe of East Point. She was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Wolfe. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 18, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Dave Mason officiating. Valetta M. Bushong Valetta M. Bushong, 70, formerly of Homer, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at Tendercare in Marshall. Mrs. Bushong was born November 13, 1932, in Wyoming, Michigan, to LeRoy and Nellie (Swayzie) Bleam. She married Craig Bushong May 26, 1951, and he preceded her in death in 1991. For many years she worked for the A&P Grocery Store, Foodland and Felpausch. She attended Cook's Prairie Baptist Church, and enjoyed her grandchildren and being around people. Her other hobbies included reading, bowling and traveling. Survivors include a daughter, Claudette (Don) Tinney of Portage; a son, David (Kelley) Bushong of Montana; a sister, Reatha Bushong of Homer; six grandchildren, Jason, Shannon, Lindsay, Lacey, Justus and Cayley; and a great-grandson, Lincoln. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Kermit Bleam; a sister, Lila Beach; and two half brothers, Richard Radle and Don Bleam. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 23, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Bob Rundell and the Rev. Richard Kensinger officiating. Mildred M. Andrews Mildred M. Andrews, 89, of Homer, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Andrews was born September 4, 1913, in Homer Township, to T.B. and Goldie J. (Snyder) Shaffer. She married Howard Andrews October 26, 1935, and he preceded her in death in 1988. She attended the Fisher Country School #4 and graduated from Homer High School in 1930. She continued her education at Cleary College. She was an administrative secretary to the Homer schools superintendent for 25 years and Homer Township Treasurer for three years. She was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church, Monday Club, Child Study Club, Homer Historical Society and Just-A-Club. She enjoyed hooking rugs, ceramics, cooking and was an avid reader. Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Tom) Muer of Wheaton, Illinois, and Sally (Terry) Anderson of Homer; a son, John (Marsha) Andrews of Winneconne, Wisconsin; a sister, Doris Folk of Homer; a brother, Gerald Shaffer of Homer; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Zito of Homer; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 22, at the Homer United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery. Ruby Martinson Ruby Martinson, 96, of Clarendon Township, died Thursday, February 20, 2003, at her home. Mrs. Martinson was born December 12, 1906, in Riga, to Julius and Mary (Raymond) Powell. She spent most of her life in the Homer and Tekonsha areas. She married Frank Martinson on November 22, 1941. He preceded her in death in 1960. Mrs. Martinson was a member of St. Joe Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, tatting, crocheting, reading, playing the piano and especially baking homemade bread. Survivors include a daughter, Rita (Larry) Blankenship of Tekonsha; two sons, Bruce Martinson of Tekonsha and Bill Martinson of Coldwater; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter. Visitation is today (Wednesday) from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Ryan M. Sorgenfrie Ryan M. Sorgenfrie, 21, of Litchfield, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Steuben County, Indiana. Mr. Sorgenfrie was born January 20, 1982, in Hillsdale, to Tina and Gerry Sorgenfrie He graduated from Quincy High School in 2000. He loved sports and was an enthusiastic football player in high school. He also played on the summer softball league for the Coldwater Wal-Mart, where he was employed as a department manager. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Tina and Tom King of Quincy; his father, Gerry Sorgenfrie of Litchfield; fiancé Kristy Flint of Litchfield; his "second mom," Patty Vroman of Allen; four brothers, Joshua Champman and Bradley Chapman, both of Quincy, Jason Flint of Allen and Claude Sorgenfrie of Jackson; two stepsisters, Christy and Jenny King of Coldwater; grandparents Jerry and Marge Lewis of Hillsdale and Henry and Margaret Vroman of Litchfield. Vern F. Carsner Vern F. Carsner, 88, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mr. Carsner was born November 25, 1914, in Toledo, Ohio, to Fayette and Jane Carsner. He was preceded in death by his wife, B. Irene Carsner, whom he married June 1, 1935. Mr. Carsner graduated from Libby High School in Toledo and served in the Coast Guard. He was retired from Corning Glass in Albion He belonged to the IOOF #520 in Litchfield. Survivors include three daughters, Dianne (Bob) Shilling of Parma, Janice (Robert) Saxton of Kalkaska, and Linda (Dave) Prybella of Jonesville; two sons, Neil Carsner of Litchfield and Vern Stephen Carsner; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, February 28, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Lawrence R. "Larry" Katz Lawrence R. "Larry" Katz, 48, of Homer, died Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. Mr. Katz was born August 11, 1954, in Coldwater, to Herman and Florence (Stanton) Katz. He graduated from Homer High School in 1972. He moved back to Homer from Florida in December 2001. He was a steel worker and constructed steel communication towers. He enjoyed music, the ocean and all of his friends. Survivors include a son, Jessie Katz of Knoxville, Tennessee; two daughters and their mother, Krista and Larrielle Katz, and Cindy Spears, all of Orlando, Florida; his mother, Florence Adams of Homer; his stepfather, Robert Adams of Parma; and two brothers, Steve (Connie) Katz of Jackson and Doug (Patti) Katz of White Bear, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Katz. According to the wishes of the deceased, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by the Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, Homer. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Michigan Heart Association.
James W. Stevens James W. Stevens, 63, of Litchfield, died Thursday, February 27, 2003, at Community Health Center of Branch County. Mr. Stevens was born February 25, 1940, in Williamson, West Virginia, to Robert and Katherine (Pennington) Stevens. He married Carolyn Runyon January 16, 1960. She survives. Mr. Stevens retired from Hayes-Albion Corp., having worked for 32 years. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening, camping and especially spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Anita (Mike) Knapp of Litchfield, and Sandy (Brad) Dow and Robin (Jeff) Gilmore, all of Homer; two sons, Donald "D.R." (Susan) Stevens and James Stevens, Jr., all of Hillsdale; a sister, Clara Mae "Phyliss" Iles of Homer; a brother, Roger Smith of Atlanta, Georgia; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Elizabeth C. Dunn Elizabeth C. Dunn, 86, of Homer, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at her home. Mrs. Dunn was born March 25, 1916, in Parma Township, to Vivalda Newton and Bethel Maude (Noakes) Freer. She married Milford Dunn February 25, 1938. He preceded her in death December 10, 1998. Mrs. Dunn was a dietician for Marshall High School for 20 years, was secretary and treasurer for East Eckford Community Church and treasurer for the Original Michigan Fiddlers Association. She was a member of the Albion VFW Auxiliary, She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, all handicrafts, baking bread and caring for her grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters, Dorothea (Rolland) Face of Marshall, Diana Hopkins and Mike Yost of Albion, and Doris (Galen) Lautzenheiser of Homer; two sons, Dwight (Robin) Dunn of Homer and Dennis (Sharon) Dunn of Marshall; a daughter in-law, Jane Dunn of Quincy; a sister, Gwen Sheldon of Marshall; a brother, Lesleigh (Marge) Freer of Burlington; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by two sons, DeLayne "Joe" and Jerry Dale; a sister, Maxine Mullins; and a granddaughter, Pamela Dunn. Roger A. Fowler Roger A. Fowler, 51, of Homer, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at his home. Mr. Fowler was born October 12, 1951, in Albion, to Cecil and Shirley (Bartlett) Fowler. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and later worked for Griswold Machine and Engineering Co. in Union City. He formerly belonged to the Coldwater Eagles Lodge and enjoyed trap-shooting, hunting, fishing and boating. Survivors include his mother, Shirley Fowler of Homer; a daughter, Kathy Fowler of Marshall; three sons, David (Leigh Anne) Fowler of Litchfield, and James Fowler and Lloyd Fowler, both of Marshall; two sisters, Connie Litchard of Rock and Amy (Jamie) Pelfrey of Albion; two brothers, William Fowler and C.J. Fowler, both of Homer; five grandsons; and his grandmother, Aretta Fowler of Homer. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the J. Leona May Wade Leona May Wade, 88, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Whispering Pines Adult Foster Care Home in Quincy. Mrs. Wade was born March 18, 1914, in Butler Township, to Garr and Elizabeth (Lutz) McDonald. She married Clifford Wade December 19, 1932, and he preceded her in death in 1986. She attended Quincy Schools and was employed for 24 years at the Litchfield Dairy. She was active in area dance groups. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Wade of Litchfield; a grandson, Jay Wade of Litchfield; a great-grandson, Andy Wade of Litchfield; three sisters-in-law, Lena McDonald of Quincy, Gladys (Keith) Clay of Shelbyville, Indiana, and Marjorie King of Litchfield; a brother-in-law, Donald Wade of Safford, Arizona; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Wade; a grandson, Steve Wade; two sisters; and three brothers. Barbara Jean Marshall Barbara Jean Marshall, 64, of Homer, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at her home. Mrs. Marshall was born August 18, 1938, in Homer, to Lewis and Lula (Juckett) Truax. She married Adis "Bud" Marshall January 30, 1965, and he survives. She was a lifelong Homer area resident and worked for the housekeeping department of the Branch County Health Center for 13 years. She enjoyed her grandchildren, communicating with friends on the C.B. radio and her flower gardens. Gladys M. Clark Gladys M. Clark, 77, formerly of Litchfield, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Mrs. Clark was born August 3, 1925, in Burlington, to James and Viola (Stuck) Guilford. She married Lester R. (Bob) Clark in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Clark attended Marshall schools. She retired from Corning Glass Co. in Albion. She belonged to St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale. Survivors include three sisters, Doris Willibrandt and Ethel Castillo, both of Marshall, and Shirley Wood of Albion; and two brothers, Lorence Guilford of Lutz, Florida, and George Guilford of Charlotte. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Froh, Georgia Woodmansee, Joan Neblo and Betty Mills; and two brothers, Edward Guilford and Frank Guilford. Visitation was held Tuesday, March 25, from 1-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with Father Gordon Greene officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Bernard H. Marshall Bernard H. Marshall, 94, of Albion, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at Tendercare in Albion. Mr. Marshall was born March 3, 1909, in Albion, to Titus and Lenora (Schultz) Marshall. He was married to Georgia Childers for 68 years, and she preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of the Albion area. He worked at Gale Foundry during World War II, then became a carpenter for Sharp Construction until his retirement. He also farmed. Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Lons of Marshall; two sons, Bert T. (Frieda) Marshall of Albion and Jim H. (Myrtle) Marshall of Jackson; a daughter-in-law, Lillie (Bernard W.) Marshall of Arkansas; a sister, Lucille M. Forber of Lady Lake, Florida; a brother, Gaylord Marshall of Ann Arbor; close friends Wanda and Marsha Brown and family; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by a son, Bernard W. Marshall, and two brothers, Wayne and Russell. Thomas "Sonny" Vance Duke, Jr. Thomas "Sonny" Vance Duke, Jr., 69, of Bushnell, Florida, formerly of Homer, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Florida. Mr. Duke was born February 17, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Thomas Vance and Mary (Cuitkovith) Duke, Sr. He married Jean R. Dew in 1955 in Clawson and she survives. Mr. Duke moved from Homer to Florida in 1989. He was an owner-operator of a tractor trailer hauling steel for Navajo Co. He retired in 1989 and was a member of the Teamster Local in Michigan. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Thomas V. (Lori) Duke III of Homer; two daughters, Linda (Charles) Perkins of Albion and Renee (David) Perkins of Homer; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard (Jeanie) Duke of Bushnell, Florida, and Jim (Diane) Duke and Virgil (Marcella) Duke, both of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and four sisters, Sally Wood and Linda Breeden, both of Knoxville, Tennessee, JoAnn Bowden of Manchester, Tennessee and Betty (Dick) Cole of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by two sons, Terry Lee Duke and Duane Duke, and his parents. Funeral services were held Friday, March 28, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Larry Fulton officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove in Coldwater.
Charles Dee Fletcher Charles Dee Fletcher, 58, of Battle Creek, died Monday, March 24, 2003, after being stricken with a heart attack while walking across the Washington Street Bridge. Mr. Fletcher was born June 6, 1944, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to McKinley and Reva (Lykins) Fletcher. He was a farmer and was employed as a handyman on farms and personal residences. He enjoyed the outdoors, walking, traveling, fishing, bluegrass music, singing and working on cars. Survivors include five sons, Charles (Debbie) Fletcher of Albion, Leeroy (Pam) Fletcher of Battle Creek, Bill (Jennifer) Fletcher and Trampus Fletcher, all of Angola, Indiana, and Kenny Rogers Fletcher of East Lake; two daughters, Leona (Jerry) Gosnell of Jackson and Vickie (David) Brown of Angola, Indiana; a stepdaughter, Ruthann (Jack) Hickerson of Homer; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his former wife, Murlene Fletcher of Angola, Indiana; five brothers; and 10 sisters. He was preceded in death by three daughters, Tammy Lynn, Joyce Kay and Vallrie; a son, Eallrie; a granddaughter, Lucinda Compton; and four brothers. Funeral services were held at the Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery Friday, March 28, with the Rev. Michael Sparks officiating. Donna J. Allen Donna J. Allen, 68, of Battle Creek, formerly of Homer, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Battle Creek Health System. Ms. Allen was born April 5, 1934, in Homer, to Ronald and Louise Joy (Vandenburgh) Sprague. Survivors include a brother, William Kilbourn of Marshall, and an aunt, Muriel Face of Homer. Mary R. Bates Mary R. Bates, 78, of Homer, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Tendercare in Marshall. Ms. Bates was born October 19, 1924, in Williamstown, Missouri, to Thomas and Luttie (Schmid) Dunning. She graduated from Kahoka High School in Kahoka, Missouri. She came to Michigan and worked at Katz Nursing Home, Calhoun County Hospital and worked for 25 years at Oaklawn Hospital. She enjoyed her grandchildren, baking, cooking and attending her grandchildren's sporting events. Survivors include three daughters, Rose Mary (Richard) Berry of Homer, Emily (Chris) Baker, Sr. of Marshall and Pat (Michael) LaVergne of Sherwood; four sons, Tom (Mary) Bates of Homer, Donald Bates of Georgia, Bernard (Karen) Bates of Homer and Dennis Bates of Homer; two sisters, Doris Spence of Missouri and Mary Eleanor Dunning of Iowa; a brother, Thomas Dunning, Jr. of Missouri; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Margaret L. Snyder Margaret L. Snyder, 85, of Hillsdale, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Laurels of Coldwater. Mrs. Snyder was born April 6, 1918, in Eckford Township, to Asahel W. and Grace A. (Cook) Pratt. She married Marshall Snyder and he preceded her in death in 1996. She lived in North Carolina from 1956-1996. She returned to Homer in 1996. She worked at Kellogg's and in the clothing factory in Coldwater. She enjoyed needle crafts, sewing, tole painting and knitting. She also loved flowers and gardening and loved to read. She was a member of the Camelot's of the Shriners and the United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Survivors include a son, David Dubson of Lowel, Florida; a stepdaughter, Ann Woodroff of Charlotte, North Carolina; a granddaughter; a brother, Howard (Peg) Pratt of Homer; two sisters, Mildred (Allan) Peterson of Tekonsha and Doris (Charles) Blonde of Litchfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Lindsey. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 10, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. LeVerne "Bud" Smith LeVerne "Bud" Smith, 83, of Homer, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Smith was born April 13, 1919, in Calhoun County, to Ward E. and Helen (Dodds) Smith. He farmed and also worked at Fairview Cemetery for a short time. He enjoyed watching professional golf. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Ruth Smith of Homer; four cousins, E. Wesley and Phyllis Smith of Freemont, Indiana, David and Char Smith, Eloise and Ross Smith, and John and Penny Smeltzer, all of Jackson; and several cousins in North Dakota. Mary Elizabeth Benham Bush Mary Elizabeth Benham Bush, 81, died February 28, 2003. A memorial service will be held at the Homer UMC at 11 a.m. on April 26. Mrs. Bush was born April 27, 1921, in Homer. She loved her family and was inspired by nature. She attended Michigan State and Wayne State universities. She was a Christian educator at First United Methodist Church of Warren, a daycare director in Highland Park and Concord, and a co-owner of The Hawthorne Tree in Brooklyn. Mrs. Bush was a master seamstress and an active volunteer in church, school and community activities. She hosted exchange students and was a Stephen Minister at East Naples UMC. Survivors include six daughters, Catherine (Barry) Grace, Shirley (Ed) Perkins, Elizabeth (David) Yoak, Ellen Bush, Sarah Keiser and Patricia (Mike) Harshbarger; a son, Richard (Linda) Bush; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Bartell and Ruth Pulsipher; three brothers, Maurice (Helen) Benham, George (Margot) Benham, and Frank (Dorothy) Benham; and two sisters-in-law, Clara Bush and Della Bush. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Eugene H. Bush, and a brother, Howard Benham.

Charles Warren Draper Charles Warren Draper, 76, of Williamston, passed away Fri-day, April 11, 2003, at his home, following a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. His wife and daughter were at his side. Mr. Draper was a cum laude graduate of Hillsdale College, and received his master's degree from Western Michigan University. He was a well-respected teacher and principal at Litchfield High School beginning in 1953. He became an assistant professor at Hillsdale College in 1964 and continued his career at Interlochen Arts Academy beginning in 1967 as a physics teacher. In 1974, Mr. Draper was appointed Dean of Faculty there, where he continued in that position until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Draper was a member of the Elks Club, the Masons, the Shriners and the American Legion. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He will always be remembered for his love for his family. Music, dancing and crossword puzzles brought him many hours of enjoyment. Mr. Draper is survived by his wife, Winona; a son, Charles M. (Julie) Draper; a daughter, Lonnie (Dean) McDuff; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Joan) Draper and Robert "Sam" Draper. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at Litchfield Cemetery May 17, at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Masonic Pathways, 1200 Wright Ave., Alma, MI 48801. The Gorsline-Runciman Co. Clayton D. Huffman Clayton D. Huffman, 92, of Marshall and formerly of Albion, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Mr. Huffman was born September 6, 1910, in Homer, to L.D. and Edna (Broas) Huffman. He married Dorothy Maddux of Albion September 30, 1944. She preceded him in death December 5, 2000. He attended Springport Schools and graduated in 1928. After graduation he joined the Army Air Corp at Selfridge Field. He was trained as an airplane and engine mechanic, but an injury in a motorcycle accident caused his discharge from the service in 1930. In the early thirties Mr. Huffman worked for Decker Screw, then joined Union Steel Products Co. in 1935 as a sheet metal worker. He traveled extensively for Union Steel, installing equipment in bakeries. During the war years he installed and serviced bakeries for the military services throughout the country. He held numerous positions while at Union Steel, including Field Service Engineer, manager of the Field Service Department, manager of Conveyor Engineering, manager of Air Conditioning Engineering, Product Liability coordinator and was assistant to the Chief Engineer when he retired in 1972. Mr. Huffman was a member of the American Society of Bakery Engineers, the Albion Engineering Society, Duck Lake Country Club and the Battle Creek Area Seniors Golf Association. He was also a life member of Elks Lodge #1798. He was a graduate of JCS in business administration, Jackson Junior College in engineering training Michigan State University in management development and Metals Engineering Institute in elements of metallurgy. Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Honeywell of Albion and Shirley Dean of Marshall; and two brothers, Dean and Elver "Bus," both of Albion. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Bolton officiating. Visitation will be held an hour before the service. Burial will be at Albion Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Patricia A. Newell Patricia A. Newell, 73, of Hastings, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Newell was born March 12, 1930, in Homer, to Harry and Theresa (Chapman) Weiss. She married Robert J. Newell October 1, 1949. He preceded her in death March 10, 1981. She was raised in the Homer area and attended area schools, graduating in 1948 from Homer High School. She moved to Hastings in 1964 from Marshall. She was co-owner of the former Hastings Floor Covering in Hastings from 1964-1979. Other employment included Span-Master Co., Hastings Aluminum Products and Felpausch Food Store, from which she retired in 2001. Mrs. Newell was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hastings Country Club and enjoyed knitting, golfing, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah A. (Donald) Hall of Lowell and Brenda S. (Randy) Teegardin of Hastings; two granddaughters, Sarah A. (Kris) Fox of Lowell and Jennifer L. (Luke) Bosscher of Grand Rapids; and a brother, Weston "Pork" Weiss of Homer. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Weiss. Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, at Wren Funeral Home in Hastings with the Rev. Willard H. Curtis officiating. Burial took place at Hastings Riverside Cemetery. Raul P. "Bull" Garcia Raul P. "Bull" Garcia, 58, of Homer, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Garcia was born December 17, 1944, in Los Fresnos, Texas, to Felipe and Esperanza (Puentes) Garcia, Sr. Mr. Garcia was a jailer in Cameron County, Texas. He also worked at Farley Brothers Nursery. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, flower gardening and spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include a daughter, Maryellen (Tommy) Wright of Homer; two sons, Phillip (Theresa) Garcia of Battle Creek, and Joe Garcia of Albion; four brothers, Ernesto Garcia of San Benito, Texas, Rudy Garcia of Albion, Felipe Garcia, Jr. of San Benito, and Adan Garcia of Albion; four sisters, Berta Garcia of La Feria, Texas, and Alicia Garcia, Adela Maldonado and Eva Cantu, all of San Benito; and two grandchildren. Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Aurora Jaramillo and Anita Garcia, all of Los Fresnos. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 30, at 4 p.m. at the J. Alice Sawdey Alice Sawdey, 83, of Litchfield, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mrs. Sawdey was born January 27, 1920, in Dexter, Minnesota, to Henry and Gertie (Brant) Bos. She married Dorr L. Waters in 1939. He preceded her in death in 1960. She married Warren Sawdey in 1966. He survives. For many years Mrs. Sawdey was employed at Simpson Manufacturing Company in Litchfield, retiring in 1982. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Evelyn (Gerald) Gardner of Milton, Florida; a stepdaughter, Sara Jagelka of Cambria; a stepson, Karl (Pat) Sawdey of Hillsdale; a sister, Jenny Sebby of Milaca, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were two sisters, a brother and a grandson. Hazel L. (Camburn) Boley Hazel L. (Camburn) Boley, 89, of Battle Creek, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Boley was born May 12, 1913, in Coldwater, to George J. and Catherine (Cox) Moog. She married Leo Camburn in 1932 in Angola, Indiana, and he preceded her in death in 1976. She married Marion Boley in Bradenton, Florida, and he preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Boley was raised in Coldwater and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1931. She lived in Homer most of her adult life and was a winter resident of Bradenton, Florida, for 20 years. She worked as a secretary for Homer High School for 25 years, retiring in 1978. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and all types of crafts. Survivors include two sons, William G. Camburn of Paw Paw and Daniel J. Camburn of Homer; three daughters, Janice A. Curry of Eaton Rapids, Nina K. Ainslie of Battle Creek and Lynn Hoover of Detroit; 19 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Boley was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Straw; a grandson, Mark Straw; a great-grandson, Zachary Cam-burn; and seven sisters. Lester M. Sowles Lester Mac Sowles, 68, formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at his home in Albion. Mr. Sowles was born November 27, 1934, in Butler Township, to Lloyd and Ruth (Manchester) Sowles. He attended schools in Coldwater, Quincy, Litchfield and Homer. He quit school in the twelfth grade and started working at McGraw- Edison in Albion. He worked there for nearly 25 years, except for a short stay in the Navy, for which he earned an honorable discharge. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting and motorcycles. Mr. Sowles is survived by a sister, Helen Hakes of Jackson, and a nephew, Prof. Jahn Karl Hakes of Clemson University, North Carolina. Cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service will be held at Bentley Corners Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, with the Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating. Arrangements were made by Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, Homer.

Glenn R. Grodi Glenn R. Grodi, 89, of Homer, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at his home. Mr. Grodi was born December 2, 1913, in Ohio, to George and Bernice (Swope) Grodi. He married Ruth Wetherbee in a 1933 marriage that ended in divorce. He retired as a mechanic from Art Moehn Chevy Dealer in Jackson. He was a member of the Homer Masons. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, snowmobiling and bowling. Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Dowding of Homer; a special friend, Margaret "Peg" Weiss of Homer; four grandchildren, Paulette Brinker of Troy, Lynette Milliman of Tekonsha, Matthew Dowding of Lyon Lake and Nanette Knowles of East LeRoy; and a great-grandchild, Kenneth Milliman of Tekonsha. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 15, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Jim Snyder officiating. Ransom M. Curey Ransom M. Curey, 84, lifelong resident of Litchfield, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at home. Mr. Curey was born in his family home on Cronk Road in Litchfield on June 24, 1918, the second child of Rex M. and Olive A. (Swope) Curey. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1936. After high school, he worked in Chicago for the railroad. Later, while working at Ypsilanti State Hospital, he met Beatrice M. Brock, another employee. The two corresponded during World War II when Mr. Curey served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He earned commendation for his service in the U.S. Army Band and rose to the rank of sergeant with the 81st Infantry Wildcat Division. On February 23, 1946, Mr. Curey and Miss Brock were married at Ganson Street Baptist Church in Jackson. They made their home in Litchfield, where Mr. Curey farmed and subsequently worked for the lumberyard in Litchfield, Game Time, and for Simpson Industries, where he retired in 1983 after 22 years. He was also a part-time bus driver for Litchfield Community Schools. The couple raised their five children in the same home where Mr. Curey was born. Mr. Curey had a variety of interests, including stock car racing, which he did at Butler Motor Speedway for several years, gardening, woodworking, sports, and fishing in Michigan, Florida and Alaska. He took two trips to Alaska in his retirement years and loved to tell the stories of those adventures. His family has fond memories of annual summer vacations to the Upper Peninsula in school buses he converted to motor homes. He enjoyed spending time with his 10 grandchildren, as well as his step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially giving them rides on his tractors. He is survived by three daughters, Sandra (Robert) Montgomery of Lansing, Marcia (Ronald) Schmidt of Sörgenloch, Germany, and Victoria (Philip) Naegele of Delta Junction, Alaska; two sons, Ransom M. Wyona Uvon Skelt Wyona Uvon Skelt, of Litchfield, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at home. Mrs. Skelt was born in Lenawee County to Roy V. and Vida (Wotring) Mobus. She graduated from Metamora (Ohio) High School. Mrs. Skelt was employed at Don's Supermarket in Litchfield and Camden for many years. She married Ernest Perry Skelt March 4, 1945. He survives. In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Susan (Charles) Little of Lexington, South Carolina, and Bonnie (Gary) Adams of Litchfield; a sister, Verda Ries (Max) Walkup of Litchfield; and four grandchildren, James Adams of Pontiac, Megan Adams of Litchfield, and Daniel and Sara Little of Lexington. According to her wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Those wishing an expression of sympathy in her memory are asked to consider the Litchfield District Library or the Litchfield Historical Society. Duane Edward Rehm Duane Edward Rehm, 55, of Homer, died Wednesday, May 14,, 2003, at his home. Mr. Rehm was born June 1, 1947, in St. Johns, to Gerald and Alberta (Cook) Rehm. He married Kathleen Hitz December 21, 1968 and she survives. Mr. Rehm was a statistical processing engineer for Aeroquip in Spring Arbor for 25 years, and for the last five years was employed by Nyloncraft Manufacturing in Jonesville. He served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was a member of the V.F.W. Homer Post and enjoyed collecting classic cars, car shows, hobby farming, gardening, traveling, his grandchildren, and doing activities with his sons. In addition to his wife, Mr. Rehm is survived by his mother, Alberta Diehl of Zephyrhills, Florida; two sons, Kelly (Dallion) Rehm of Bolivar, Missouri, and Brent (Shelly) Rehm of Homer; a sister, Nelda Puopolo of California; two stepsisters, Susan Stiltes of Arizona and Cheryl Diehl of Eaton Rapids; two brothers, David Rehm of Lansing and Gary Rehm of Ashley; a stepbrother, David Diehl of Eaton Rapids; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held Monday, May 19, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Jerry Drummond officiating. John H. Wirebaugh John H. Wirebaugh, 98, formerly of Albion, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Tendercare-Marshall. Mr. Wirebaugh was born February 19, 1905, in Clarendon Township, to Frank and Maude Carrie Wirebaugh. He graduated from Litchfield High School. He married Gladys Ruth Pittlekow in 1929. She preceded him in death in 1956. He married Leola McMurtie Derhammer in 1975. She preceded him in death in 1999. Mr. Wirebaugh was self-employed as a farmer and also worked for Albion Elevator and Mobile Feed Grinder with Roy Reichow. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau and enjoyed going to horse and tractor pulls. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia (Neil) VandeVord of Lansing; five sons, Ralph (Garnet) Wirebaugh of Surprise, Arizona, Philip (Carole) Wirebaugh of Marshall, Gary (Jacki) Wirebaugh of Michigan City, Indiana, Thomas (Sherry) Wirebaugh of Albion; and David (Becky) Wirebaugh of Walker-ton, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wives, Mr. Wirebaugh was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. Clarence Luther Butters Clarence Luther Butters, 83, of Homer, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Butters was born February 18, 1920, in Pulaski, to Frederick George and Hazel (Hutchins) Butters. Mr. Butters was a member of Allied Industrial Workers of America, a member of the Albion Eagles, and a former member of the C.C.C. He was a machinist at Clark Equipment in Jackson, retiring in September of 1975. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and fly-fishing for bluegills. Survivors include three daughters, Judy (John) Cole, Alice (Don) Clark, and Mary Ann (Bill) Fisher, all of Coldwater; 22 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Carlton (Joyce) Butters of Lady Lakes, Florida; a sister, Joette (George) Whitehead of Astatula, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeannie Stempien; son, Clarence "Bill" Butters; two brothers, Russell and Francis; and four sisters, Mildred Levy, Joan Larder, Clarice Brazee and Charlotte Gasperini. Funeral services were held Friday, May 23, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Terry Butter officiating. Burial was in Pulaski Cemetery. Beverly L. Hammontree Beverly L. (Barnes) Hammontree, 72, of Petoskey, died May 16, 2003, after a lengthy illness. A graduate of Petoskey High School, Mrs. Hammontree later obtained her nursing degree from South Central Michigan School of Nursing. After raising her family in Homer, she returned to her hometown of Petoskey in 1980, where she joined the staff at Bortz Health Care for many years. In addition to her nursing career, she provided support to HIV/AIDS patients and their families as a member of HANDS. Mrs. Hammontree was active as a Scout leader and with the First Presbyterian Church. She served several terms as worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, both in the Homer and Petoskey chapters. Survivors include three sons, Lorne K. Hammontree of Alanson, Mark L. Hammontree of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Donald G. Hammontree of Homer; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dale A. Hammontree. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, at the Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey, with the Rev. Dave Behling officiating. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to any charity dedicated to the fight against AIDS.

Lillian Johnson Lillian Johnson, 67, of Litchfield, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at her home. Mrs. Johnson was born October 11, 1937, in Dorton, Kentucky, to Joseph and Katurah (Elkins) Caudill. She married Perry Johnson September 24, 1955. He preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Johnson had been employed in the food service department at the Litchfield Nursing Centre for more than 25 years and was currently employed by Wal-Mart. Survivors include a daughter, Sherri Lynn (Mike) Karaptian of Jonesville; two sons, Steven (Jackie) Johnson of Madison, Mississippi, and Larry (Tammy) Johnson of Homer; three brothers, Victor (Audrey) Caudill of Ypsilanti, George (Oda) Caudill of Jonesville, and Frank (Twila) Caudill of Wayne; and eight grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and six sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28, at the Little Marie Old Regular Baptist Church, Litchfield, followed by interment in Mosherville Cemetery. Max Owen Walkup Max Owen Walkup, 85, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. Mr. Walkup was born October 3, 1917, in Waldron, to Floyd and Bernice (Way) Walkup, and graduated from Waldron High School. He married Marian Lee Andridge in 1941 and she preceded him in death in 1990. He married Verda (Mobus) Ries in 1994 and she survives. Mr. Walkup served in the U.S. Army during WWII, was a life member of the American Legion, member and Chaplain of the Litchfield IOOF Lodge, and a 50-year member of the Litchfield Congregational Church where he was chairman of the church board for two years. He served as the Litchfield Village Clerk for two terms and was honored with Litchfield's "Citizen of the Year" award. Mr. Walkup was a founder and leader of the Litchfield 4-H Saddle Club for 12 years, trustee of the Hagaman 4-H Fund, member of the State 4-H Developmental Committee, and recipient of the "State of Michigan Nina Wright 4-H Leader of the Year" award. After 31 years of employment, Mr. Walkup retired from Wolfinger Hardware, Inc. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Sandra (Harry) Thomas of Litchfield, Carole (John) Buskirk of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Jennifer Jane (Richard) Farnsworth of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three stepchildren and families, Roselyn Helberg of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carole Fuller of Toledo, Ohio, Michael (Darlene) Ries of Monroe; and a brother, Paul (Ketha) Walkup of Litchfield. In addition to his first wife, Mr. Walkup was preceded in death by seven brothers. Carl Brown, Jr. Carl Brown, Jr., 79, of Clarendon Township, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Battle Creek. Mr. Brown was born September 21, 1923, in Saginaw, to Walter and Alice (Stork) Brown. On November 3, 1957, he married Doris Sharp, and she survives. Mr. Brown served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, receiving a Purple Heart, and belonged to the Albion American Legion. He enjoyed farming and had been a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau. At one time, Mr. Brown was employed as a cook at Schuler's Restaurant in Marshall. He had also worked at Hughes Elementary School, Marshall. One brother preceded him in death. Frances "Fran" Casebeer Frances "Fran" Casebeer, 77, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Casebeer was born February 21, 1926, in Battle Creek, to Stephen and Gladys Emma (Kniss) Martin. She married Lloyd Casebeer May 26, 1945. He preceded her in death April 17, 1991. Mrs. Casebeer spent most of her life in the Tekonsha area. She attended the First Baptist Church of Tekonsha and was a member of the Homer Post of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary, Silver Dance Club and Research Club. She enjoyed bowling, fast pitch softball and sewing. Mrs. Casebeer is survived by three daughters, Carol Willbur of Tekonsha, Gail (Greg) Barker of Galesburg, Ann (Norm) Fether of Archibald, Ohio; a brother, Volney Martin of Battle Creek; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Coffman Geer; a sister, Margaret Robinson; and a brother, Donald Martin. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at the First Baptist Church in Tekonsha at 11 a.m., with Reverend Jim Berger officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Tekonsha. Edwin John Powers Edwin John Powers, 87, of Concord, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at his home. Mr. Powers was born December 16, 1915, in Marengo Township, to John and Ellen "Nellie" (Gilson) Powers. He married Shirley Foley in September 1941. She survives. Mr. Powers was a 1935 graduate of Albion High School in 1935 and spent two years at Michigan State University majoring in agriculture. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in India, Berman, and China. Mr. Powers worked at Albion Elevator before and after the Army and started farming in 1948 in Albion Township. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Progressive Farmers, and Marshall Moose Lodge. Mr. Powers enjoyed playing cards and dancing. In addition to his wife, Mr. Powers is survived by two sons, David and Dennis Powers, both of Concord; a sister, Jean Ballentine, of Allen Park; a brother, Henry Powers, of Homer; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elizabeth Powers. Funeral services were held Monday, June 2, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with Reverend Daryl Hill officiating. She was born July 9, 1941, in Plymouth, to Lester and Mary (Mauk) Corwin. In 1964 she married Karl Gainer and he preceded her in death in 1972. She is survived by a daughter, Kallie Gainer (Scott Petrie) of Osseo; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Devon Petrie; and two brothers, Willard "Bill" (Nancy) Corwin of Coldwater, and John (Mary) Corwin of Arcadia, Florida. Mr. Meeks was born June 28, 1922, in Delphos, Ohio, to George and Lucinda May (Johnson) Meeks. He married Pauline B. DeWitt and she preceded him in death in 1984. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Prior to his residence in Michigan, he had been employed as a bus driver in Lima, Ohio. Bertha Osborn Bertha Osborn, 75, of Homer, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born August 22, 1927, in Albion, to Oliver and Margaret C. (Schwartzengraber) Hull. She married Robert S. Osborn November 2, 1946. He survives. Mrs. Osborn was a homemaker and life-long resident of the Albion and Homer area. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Homer. She enjoyed feeding her birds, her grandchildren and refunding. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Charles (Jacque) Osborn of Coldwater, and Linn (Barb) Osborn and Robert (Sue) Osborn, both of Homer; three sisters, Kathleen Hull of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Rachel (Delbert) Davis of Homer, and Ruth (John) DeMott of Jackson; two brothers, Norman (Libby) Hull of Marengo and James (Virginia) Hull of Albion; and six grandchildren. She was born November 12, 1923, in Clarendon Township, to Milford and Edna (Reynolds) Moor. She married John C. Hawkins December 24, 1947, in Marshall. He preceded her in death July 14, 2000. Mrs. Hawkins had been a resident of the Tekonsha area most of her life. She was a real estate agent. She is survived by a daughter, Linda (David) Allen of Portage; a daughter-in-law, Patty Hawkins of Homer; four grandsons, Jeffrey (Renee) Johnson of Racine, Wisconsin, and John J. (Holly) Hawkins, Donald V. Hawkins and Michael A. (Erica) Hawkins, all of Homer; two granddaughters, Lorrie (Bill) Bonczyk of Port-age and Rosemarie (Ted) Glynn of San Antonio, Texas; five great grandchildren, Samantha and Elizabeth Bonczyk, Jessica and Joshua Glynn, and Larry Hawkins; and a sister, Marjorie Jean Baker of Port Hope. He was born April 30, 1924, in Whitehouse, Ohio, to John and Dorothy (Prather) White and graduated from Libby High School in Toledo, Ohio. Mr. White was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII, and had been employed at Schindler Haughton Elevator. He married Goldie Cecelia Malosh June 22, 1946. She survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. White is survived by two daughters, Karen Griffiths of Camdon (formerly of Litchfield) and Linda (Dolan) Anderson of Indianapolis, Indiana; a sister, Verna Long of Toledo, Ohio; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Greta Elizabeth Spaulding Greta Elizabeth Spaulding, 72, of Sharon, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Homer, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell, Pennsylvania, following a brief illness. She was born November 15, 1930, in Decatur, Indiana, to Albert and Kathryn (Dorwin) Gehrig. She married Leslie E. Spaulding on May 8, 1954, and he survives. Mrs. Spaulding graduated from Homer High School as valedictorian and taught at Homer High School for several years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jeffrey E. (Debra) Spaulding of Erie, Pennsylvania and Scott E. (Pam) Spaulding of Chardon, Ohio; a daughter, Shelley E. Berry of Torrance, California; a brother, Stephen (Priscilla) Gehrig of Shreveport, Louisiana; and five grandchildren. Thomas Vance Duke III Thomas Vance Duke III, 47, of Homer, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born December 20, 1955, in Dearborn, to Thomas Vance "Sonny" Duke Jr., and Jean R. (Dew) Duke. He married Lori Peters June 30, 1990, in Homer. Mr. Duke was a resident of the Homer area since 1972. He was employed at Hayes-Albion in Albion for 27 years. He enjoyed car racing, watching all of the Nascar races, playing the golf arcade machine and helping other people. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons, Thomas V. Duke IV, Danny Duke and Robbie Romska, all of Detroit, and Jonathan Holbrook and Branden Holbrook of Homer; his mother, Jean Duke of Homer; two sisters, Linda (Carles) Perkins and Renee' (David) Perkins, all of Homer. Betty Carol Hall Betty Carol Hall, 57, of Homer, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. She was born November 24, 1945, in Breathitt County, Kentucky, to Rollie and Mossie (Ketchum) Hollon. She married Harlan O'Dell Hall January 10, 1962. He survives. Mrs. Hall lived in Homer for 11 years. She was an evangelist for the Pentecostal Workers of the World. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hall is survived by a son, Mark Anthony (Sandra) Hall of Homer; a daughter, Carol Ann (Tim) Daniels of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Candice Deseree Hall, Cassandra Rose Hall, Marc Anthony Root, and Amanda Lynn Daniels; a brother, Tommy Hollon of Homer; and two sisters, Martha Rose Roe of Springport and Pamela April Bentley of Albion. She was born January 18, 1910, in Dowagiac, to Bert and Mary (Hoadley) Barnes. She married Clarence B. Zuck June 15, 1963, in Homer. Mrs. Zuck was a homemaker and a member of the West Eckford Missionary Church. She enjoyed needlework and operated a foster care home in Homer for a number of years. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Zuck is survived by a daughter, Katherine (Ronald) Lawrence of Marshall; a son, Charles L. (Carolyn) Zuck of Marshall; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rossetter was born November 25, 1918, in Albion, to Emil and Pearl (Bair) Holtz. She was a graduate of Albion High School. She married Gerald Rossetter August 25, 1956. He survives. Mrs. Rossetter was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, religion, flowers, traveling, the outdoors and ice cream. In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Nancy K. (Jerry) George of Burlington, and Rochelle Barnum of Bellevue; a son, Gerald (Tina) Rossetter, Jr. of Homer; a sister, Marjorie Benward of Albion; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dyane Holtz. Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 17, at Burlington Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Walfing officiating. Ila Louise Schau Ila Louise Schau, 95, a lifelong resident of the Homer area, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mrs. Schau was born October 20, 1907, in Homer Township, to Jesse and Mary (Worley) Champion. She graduated from Homer High School in 1926 and married Clarence Schau in 1927. He preceded her in death in 1962. At one time, Mrs. Schau was employed at Litchfield Laundra-Mat and belonged to Litchfield Rebekah Lodge #134. Survivors include two daughters, Katherine King of Homer and Margaret Harvey of Frontier; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Schau was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Warren King and Dean Harvey. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Steven Tasker Steven Tasker, 47, of Kalamazoo, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Borgess Medical Center. Mr. Tasker was born April 6, 1956, in Albion, to Ross Marvin and Rosemary L. (Rice) Tasker. He was a welder at Ludlow Welding in the Athens area and manager of a gas station in the Coldwater area for a few years. Mr. Tasker was a 1974 graduate of Tekonsha High School and attended Davenport College for two years. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Missionary Church and enjoyed stockcar racing and the outdoors. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Rosemary and Andy Bailey of Allen; two daughters, Jenna Lynn (Toby) Tefft of Sherwood and Nicole Marie Tasker of Homer; a son, Benjamin Jacob Tasker of Homer; his maternal grandmother, Hazel Rice of Coldwater; four sisters, Patricia Maples of Homer, Janet (Tony) Cuellar of North Carolina, Joyce (Dick) Davis of Parma, and Marcia (Pete) Specht of Georgia; two stepsisters, Patricia (Tim) Marks of Jackson and Sandra (Richard) Vaughn of Grand Rapids; a stepbrother, Rondal (Pat) Bailey of New Mexico; and three grandsons. Linda Lee O'Dell Linda Lee O'Dell, 58, of Marshall, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Battle Creek Health System. Ms. O'Dell was born March 18, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to Edward and Madge I. (Richard-son) Hazekamp. She had been a resident of Marshall since the early 1980s. She was a homemaker. Ms. O'Dell loved to work in her gardens and enjoyed canning the many different vegetables she grew. She was very artistic and liked doing many kinds of crafts, including needlepoint, knitting and crocheting. She is survived by a daughter, Leanna Lynne DeForest of Marshall; a son, Jerry L. O'Dell of Homer; her mother, Madge I. Myers of Bloomington, Illinois; two sisters, Janice Hazekamp of Bloomington, Illinois, and Karen Leftwich of Clark, Colorado; and her ex-husband, Jerry L. O'Dell of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her father. A memorial service will be held for the family at a later date. Arrangements were made by the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home.

Shirley A. Earl Edgeman Shirley A. (Radee) Earl Edgeman, 61, of Marshall, died at her home Wednesday, June 18, 2003. She was born September 30, 1941, in Homer, to Wayne R. and Dee (Warner) Radee. She attended Homer schools. Ms. Edgeman resided in Mar-shall for the past 14 years. Prior to that, she lived in Aberdeen, Scotland and Jakarta, Indonesia. She was a homemaker, and worked at the former Fireside Inn and Win Schuler's Restaurants. Ms. Edgeman loved to go to garage sales. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. She particularly loved lobster dinners. She is survived by a daughter, Leeann Frederico of Marshall; three grandchildren, Michael Earl, Christopher Hall and Michele Frederico; her father, Wayne Radee of Desert Hot Springs, California; two brothers, Wayne Radee Jr. of Desert Hot Springs, California, and Jack Earl of Jackson; a sister, Gloria Sims of North Port, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dee Radee, and a nephew, Tristin Trout. Funeral services were held Monday, June 23, at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with Rev. George Everett Swafford George Everett Swafford, 73, of Homer, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at his home. He was born February 21, 1930, in Homer, to Frederick O. and Laura (Williams) Swafford. He married Ella Louise Kenyon February 24, 1951. She survives. Mr. Swafford was employed by Albion Malleable Iron as a core maker for several years and was a farmer in the Homer area. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. In addition to his wife, Mr. Swafford is survived by a daughter, Judy Swafford of Homer; two sons, Ernest Swafford and Steven (Laurie) Swafford, both of Homer; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Albert, Delbert and Fred; and two sisters, Edith Faulkner and Helen Berry. A graveside service will be held Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at West Clarendon Cemetery, with Rev. Jim Berger officiating. There will be no visitation. Harold L. Eddy Harold L. Eddy, 85, of Battle Creek, died Monday, June 23, 2003, in Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. He was born November 7, 1917, in Battle Creek, to Frank and Mary Eddy. Mr. Eddy married Flossie Winchell, who preceded him in death September 14, 1976. His second wife, Mary, also preceded him in death October 5, 1998. Mr. Eddy served with the U.S. Army during WWII as a Tec 5 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and was discharged in October 1946. He later worked at the Kellogg Company for 33 years in the Power House. Following retirement, he was a security guard at the former Leila site of the Battle Creek Health System for three years. Mr. Eddy attended the Emmett Street Missionary Church and Minges Hills Church of God. He was a member of the Kellogg 25 year club. He is survived by a son, Rex (Georgia) Eddy of Battle Creek; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Joyce Carpenter of South Bend, Indiana, and Sharon Michela of Battle Creek; a step-son, Roger Kidney; and six step grandchildren. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 26, at the Minges Hills Church of God in Battle Creek, with the Revs. Robert Zuhl and Mark Krontz officiating. Glenn Woolley Glenn Woolley, 87, of Homer, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Litchfield Nursing Centre. He was born July 29, 1915. He married Doris King in 1970 and she survives. Mr. Woolley attended Homer schools. He worked for Union Steel and was retired. He served his country during World War II. Mr. Woolley was a member of the Homer VFW and enjoyed traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth. A graveside service was held Saturday at Fisher Cemetery in Homer Township, with the Rev. Richard Budden officiating. Jericho Monroe Owens Jericho Monroe Owens, son of Jericho Becker and Mary Sue Owens, both of Homer, was stillborn at Sparrow Hospital on Saturday, June 28, 2003. He is survived by his mother and father; grandmother, Judy Owens of Homer; grandfather, Joe Becker of Dayton, Ohio; great-grandfather, Monroe Patrick of Homer; and several aunts and uncles. Albert J. "Jack" Sprague Albert J. "Jack" Sprague, 80, of Jonesville, died at his home Saturday, June 14, 2003. He was born in Coldwater April 21, 1923, to H. Max and Marjorie (Fox) Sprague. Mr. Sprague attended Jonesville United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 53, Hillsdale. He was a former Masonic Lodge member. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1941 and was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corp. In 1987, he retired from Allied Products, Hillsdale, having worked as an auto-prototype layout man. Mr. Sprague married Rosemary Lake in 1956, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Sprague is survived by three sons, Jack H. Sprague of Coconut Creek, Florida, Alan "Mike" (Darlene) Sprague of Allen and Roger D. (Lisa) Sprague of Litchfield; two daughters, Jill (Paul) Kamensky of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Mary (Bruce) Longfield of Reading; three sisters, Alice M. (Verne) Fredlund of Hillsdale, M. Lavon (Bill) Eldred of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Marilyn Wade of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vonnie Dube, in 1978. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was conducted June 18 at Jonesville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment followed in Sunset View Cemetery. Betty J. Chase Betty J. Chase, 78, of Battle Creek, died Friday, July 4, 2003, in Battle Creek. She was born in Tekonsha Township December 27, 1924, to Melvin C. and Doris (Ossenheimer) Avery. She married Elmer C. Chase July 7, 1946, and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Chase was a graduate of Homer High School and Wright Beauty Academy. She formerly owned and operated beauty salons in Battle Creek. She worked 26 years at Battle Creek Community Hospital, where she was business office manager until she retired in 1989. She was a charter member of Westlake Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. She served as a Sunday school teacher, luncheon coordinator, door greeter and enjoyed sharing fellowship with church members. During the summer, she attended Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City. Mrs. Chase was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed music, cooking, entertaining friends and hosting family events. For many years, camping was a favorite activity. Although she traveled all over the country, she favored trips to the east and to Louisiana to visit family. The remainder of her camping time was spent in upper Michigan with family in Marquette, Petoskey and Boyne City, and with friends at Tee Tee Campground in Mackinaw City. Her love for the north most recently led to the planning and building of a home overlooking Lake Huron. Mrs. Chase is survived by two daughters, Kathy J. Chase and Wendy S. Chase; a stepmother, Dorothy Avery; a brother, Richard J. (Helen) Avery; a sister, Ruth Ann (David) Keefer; five nephews and a niece. A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 8, at Westlake Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. B. Mason Shambach officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek. Eva Jordan Eva Jordan, 83, longtime Mosherville resident and formerly of Homer, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. She was born June 2, 1920, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Amos and Sarah (Perkins) Nichols. In 1937, she married Frank Jordan, and he preceded her in death in 1970. Mrs. Jordan was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Homer. She is survived by four daughters, Renda (Archie) Hicks of Jonesville, Cleta (Charles) Northrup of Mosherville, Betty Shaw of Allen, and Cathren Ratliff of Mosherville; five sons, Cal (Avis) Jordan of Homer, Clyde (Judy) Jordan of Hillsdale, Fred (Fannie) Jordan of Mosherville, Jerry Jordan of Hillsdale, and Franklin Jordan of Mosherville; two sisters, Shirley (Sam) Cole of Coldwater, and Evie (Kenny) Warneiki of Fort Jennings, Ohio; 28 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Edward G. Hepler Edward G. Hepler, 86, formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Tendercare in Marshall. He was born February 8, 1917, in Clarendon Township, to Clifford Joe and Hilda Belle (Spencer) Hepler. On April 18, 1944, he married Helen E. Ackley and she preceded him in death December 27, 2001. Mr. Hepler was a supervisor for 28 years at Gale Manufacturing and also a supervisor in South Bend at Park Jefferson where he retired in 1985. He served his country from 1941-1977, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific Theater from 1941-1945. Mr. Hepler was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he held several positions. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid golfer, belonging to several golf leagues. He is survived by two daughters, Marcia (Dr. Neil) Starkey of Albion and Carol Hepler of Coppell, Texas; a son, Michael (Karen) Hepler of Georgetown, Kentucky; five stepsisters, Hope Hepler of Homer, Arva Wallace of Albion, Nancy Bigalow of Georgia, Phyllis Daniels of Coldwater and Peggy Trall of Virginia; and three grandchildren, Melissa (Jason) Waldeck of Lexington, Kentucky, and Katherine and Jonathan Starkey of Albion. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hepler was preceded in death by four brothers, Gordon, Howard, Russell and Jerald Hepler. Paul Edward Siebert Paul Edward Siebert, 64, of Homer, died at his home Sunday, July 13, 2003. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Nora Siebert; four sons, Paul A. Siebert of Homer, Jay Siebert of Hillsdale, Phillip (Christine) Siebert of Marshall and Rick Siebert of Litchfield; two daughters, Valerie (Sam) Pace of Homer, and Paula Oosting of Muskegon; 10 grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother. Nora Kay Kaetzel Nora Kay Kaetzel, 83, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born August 6, 1919, in Allen Township, to Fred and Bessie (Swick) Shepard, and graduated from Allen High School in 1937. She married Ernest Kaetzel July 12, 1942. For many years, Mrs. Kaetzel was a telephone operator in the Litchfield and Allen areas. She belonged to the Litchfield Congregational Church, Litchfield Sorosis Club, Allen Chapter O.E.S., Litchfield Garden Club, the Allen and Litchfield Historical Societies and the Has Been Club. She is survived by her husband and a daughter, Kathryn (Kathy) Kaetzel of Litchfield. Funeral services were held Friday at the Litchfield Congregational Church, with Pastor Mike Murray officiating. She was born April 26, 1940, in Ovid, to Dewey and Louise (Remus) Putnam, and graduated in 1958 from Laingsburg High School. She married Jack Smith June 17, 1961. He survives. A partner in her husband's business, Mrs. Smith was the secretary/treasurer of the Jack Smith Insurance Agency. She attended the Litchfield United Methodist Church and was active in the College Student Program and Bible study. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and sewing. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Jennifer (R.J.) Bussone of Farmington Hills; a son, Brian (Rene) Smith of Homer; a sister, Hazel Jones of Rochester, Indiana; a brother, John Putnam of Oscoda; and two grandchildren, Lillie and Samuel Smith. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Richard, Dale and Robert Putnam. Bonnie Carol Brink Bonnie Carol Brink, 68, of Homer, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Brink was born November 16, 1934, in Pennsylvania, to Charles and Armeda (Donahue) Shanefelter. She married Arthur Brink in November of 1960. He survives. Mrs. Brink and her husband came to Michigan 16 years ago, where she was a homemaker, helped on the farm and took in foster children. She was an active member of Homer United Methodist Church. She enjoyed helping people, and was involved in the Foster Grandparent Program and the Eastern Star in Pennsylvania. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brink is survived by four daughters, Darlene Aytes of Lansing, Tennessee, Linda Strickland of Wyandotte, Brenda Ward of Jackson, and Denise Richards of Fort Wayne, Indiana; three sons, John Brink of Muncie, Indiana, and William and Charles Coburn of Pennsylvania; a brother, Charles Shanefelter of Montana; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Blanche Irene Post Blanche Irene Post, 91, formerly of Albion, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at the Clark Retirement Home Community, Grand Rapids, where she had resided for the past five years. She was born July 3, 1912, in Ferrysburg, to Charles J. and Maude (Chittenden) Neal. She graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1931. On August 24, 1932, in South Bend, Indiana, she married Earl G. Post and he preceded her in death in 1996. Mrs. Post worked for 40 years at Albion College as a secretary for the Alumni Association and the Student Building. She was a member of the Retired Secretary's Group at Albion College and was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church of Albion. She also enjoyed membership in the Gaskill Meyers Circle of the UMW. Mrs. Post is survived by a sister, Frances Henderson of Port Charlotte, Florida; four nephews, Robert E. (Eileen) Neal of Randolph, New York, Robert B. (Hazel) Mains of Kentwood and James (Corinne) Townsend of Holland; a niece, Linda (Gerald) Gardner of Grand Haven; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one nephew, Larry Neal. Funeral services were held Friday, August 15, at the First United Methodist Church (Wesley Chapel) in Albion, with the Rev. Dwayne Bagley officiating. Mary Geraldine (Jeffers) Trader Mary Geraldine (Jeffers) Trader, 87, longtime Litchfield resident, died Sunday, August 17, 2003, at the Ludtke Care Home in Fowlerville. She was born October 26, 1915, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Orin and Cheri (White) Jeffers. She married Edward T. Trader August 5, 1940, and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Trader received her education at Northwestern University and Michigan State University, where she earned a Master's Degree in education. Mrs. Trader was an elementary school teacher in Litchfield for many years. She belonged to the Litchfield Congregational Church, Litchfield Sorosis Club and Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. She is survived by a son, Thomas E. Trader of Howell, and a brother, Marshall A. Jeffers. A memorial service will be held at a later date. James R. Hagemann, Jr. "Bo" James R. Hagemann, Jr. "Bo", 50, of Albion, died Monday, August 18, 2003, at Pike Lake, just south of Paradise, while Michigan's Northern Lights brightly illuminated the sky. He was born December 8, 1952, to James and Pauline (Pietkiewicz) Hagemann. He married his beloved wife and best friend, Carol Zick July 24, 1976. She survives. Mr. Hagemann was a member of the Lutheran church. He was always giving of his time and was respected for his loving sense of humor and generosity. He was a part of many lives beyond his family. He approached life with an exuberant sense of love and the heart of a child. He loved the outdoors, fishing, his family and his many friends. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hagemann is survived by a daughter, Christen Hagemann of Chicago; a son, James "J.P." Hagemann of Homer; his parents, James and Pauline Hagemann of Albion; two sisters, Linnette (Ed) Collins of Olivet, and Jacqueline (James) Masternak of Albion; a brother, Thomas (Michele) Hagemann of Indianapolis, Indiana; a grandmother, Dorothy Hagemann of Albion; 10 nieces; five nephews; four great nieces; and six great nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Michaela R. Hagemann "Mikey". A funeral service was held Friday, August 22, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Erick Johnson from Immanuel Lutheran Church of Jackson officiating. Opal Morgan Opal Morgan, 60, of Litchfield, died at home Monday, August 11, 2003. She was born May 10, 1943, in Morgan County, Kentucky, to Arlin and Allie (Barnett) Watkins. She married and later divorced Richard Beattie, who preceded her in death. In May 1981, she married Steven Lee Morgan, who survives. Mrs. Morgan was a 1961 graduate of Marshall High School and worked at the Hi-lite Drive-In as a student. She later worked at the milk store, which she co-owned with her first husband. They later changed it to Speedy Chick. Since 1977, Mrs. Morgan owned several rental properties in the Homer-Litchfield area. She enjoyed gardening and watching the birds in the numerous birdhouses made by her husband. She most enjoyed time with him and her family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Tim) Howell of Homer and Amber (Billy) Blair of Jonesville; a son, Shane (Sarah) Morgan of Litchfield; a step-daughter, Monica (Adam) Pelfrey of Pittsford; four sisters, Chaltza Williams, Virgie Watkins, Emma Bisel, and Shirley Hendrick; four grandchildren, Carsen and Evan Howell, and Boston and Amanda Blair; four step-grandchildren, Adam and Samantha Smeltzer, and Zachary and Cheyanne Pelfrey; and her husband's parents, Velda and Albert Morgan, Sr., of Lubbock, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Curtis, Kermit and Edward Watkins. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 13, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Jeremiah J. Hodshire officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, with the Rev. Dorothy E. Zito Dorothy E. Zito, 88, of Homer, died Sunday, August 24, 2003, at Tendercare in Marshall. Mrs. Zito was born May 26, 1915, in Homer, to Elbert and Martha (Hayden) Andrews. For several years, Mrs. Zito was a lab technician for Dr. Curry. She had also been a cashier at Cascarelli's. Mrs. Zito belonged to the Homer United Methodist Church, Homer Historical Society, "Justa" Club and she enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing, knitting, camping and wintering in Florida. Mrs. Zito was preceded in death by two husbands, A.J. Rising and August Zito. Survivors include two daughters, Andrea (Charles) Craven and Barbara (Robert) Craven, both of Homer; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Zito was preceded in death by her brother Howard Andrews. Visitation is scheduled for today (Wednesday) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services are Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Harry William Hartle Harry William Hartle, 65, of Homer, died Saturday, August 23, 2003, at Select Specialty Hospital of Battle Creek. He was born August 13, 1938, in Albion, to Kenneth and Betty Hartle. He married Mary Louise "Lou" (McDonald) on May 4, 1973, and she survives. Mr. Hartle served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War. He was a police officer for the Village of Homer from 1969 to 1985, and had also been employ-ed at Calhoun Foundry and the Gulf Service Station. He was a member of the VFW #9411 of Homer, American Legion, N.R.A., North American Wildlife Association, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, driving race cars and handcrafts. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hartle is survived by four daughters, Beth Marie Hartle of Litchfield, Mary Hoyt of Homer, and Janice Striker and Patricia DuBoise, both of Jackson; two sons, Chris Lynn Hartle of Albion and Paul Krouse of Jackson; two stepdaughters, Teresa Mary Birtland of Connecticut and Rose Marie Lemmink of Stanton; a stepson, William E. Smith of Benton Harbor; two sisters, Lois Hunt of Jackson and April Nielson of Nebraska; three brothers, Dan Hartle of Iowa, Walter Hartle of Omaha, Nebraska, and Randy Hartle of Indianapolis, Indiana; a stepbrother, Lester Dibble, of Omaha, Nebraska; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was born June 27, 2003. She is survived by her parents; grandparents, Donna Russell and Tim and Kay Tackett, all of Homer; great-grandparents, Lorraine Lewis and Anne Tackett, both of Homer; an aunt, Randi Russell of Homer; and an uncle, Aaron Avery of Hillsdale. James C. Neitzke James C. Neitzke, 75, of Jackson, died Saturday, August 30, 2003, at his home. He was born July 24, 1928, in Marengo, to Herbert and Katherine (Semon) Neitzke, and was a 1946 graduate of Homer High School. Mr. Neitzke served in the U.S. Navy and had been a corrections officer for the State of Michigan for more than 33 years, retiring in 1986. He belonged to the American Legion and was a member of the Michigan Center Eagles Lodge, State Employees Retirement Group, and enjoyed leisure time fishing and hunting. Mr. Neitzke is survived by two daughters, Mary (Paul) Valkuchak of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Julie (Butch) Leinweber of Wichita Falls, Texas; two sons, John (Sue) Neitzke of Jackson and Allen Neitzke of San Francisco, California; two sisters, Ruth (Bob) Taylor of Homer and Mary (Clayton) Brown of Springport; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was born June 8, 1952, in Detroit, to Jerome G. and Betty (Lemke) Shorkey, Sr. He had been employed at Volvo Motors and was the manager at Thunder Hill Ranch. He belonged to the Big 9 Sportsman's Club in Pulaski. Mr. Shorkey is survived by his mother, Betty Shorkey of Homer; a daughter and her mother, Tina Marie Shorkey and Cleola McCaan of Farmington Hills; and two sisters, Donna Madison of Caseville and Marcella Jackson of Homer. Paul Edward Chamberlain Paul Edward Chamberlain (Lt. Col., U.S. Army Field Artillery - retired), 86, of Valrico, Florida, died Friday, September 12, 2003, in Plant City, Florida. Mr. Chamberlain was the fifth child of Edward H. and Hazel Elizabeth (Shilling) Chamber-lain. He was born on the family's centennial farm near Litchfield. He was a native of Litchfield and resided in Florida since 1990. Mr. Chamberlain attended Stoddard rural elementary school in Litchfield. He graduated from Litchfield High School and received his bachelor of science degree and master of arts degree from Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Chamberlain came from a long line of citizen soldiers. He served in the field artillery in World War II, the Korean War and in Viet Nam, retiring in 1970. He was a life member of Humanity Masonic Lodge #29 in Homer and founder of the Field Artillery Officer Candidate School Graduate's Association. Survivors include his wife, Lore; two sons, John and Peter Chamberlain; a daughter, Vera Morgan; two sisters, Cleo Rossman and Anna Mae Haskins; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services and inurnment will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to any Shriner's Children's Hospital. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Serenity Meadows Funeral Home in Riverview, Florida.

Bobby Mulkey Bobby Mulkey, 74, of Homer, died Thursday, September 18, 2003, at his home. He was born December 2, 1928, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to Lee and Elizabeth May (Crum) Mulkey. He married Betty Reynolds on June 5, 1993, and she survives. For 30 years he was a pattern die maker for Hayes of Albion. Mr. Mulkey was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Homer and he enjoyed his church, gardening, building things and his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Verna (John) Day and Eva Mae (David) Webb, both of Concord, and Joan Holton and Janice Powers, both of Charlotte; three sons, Bobby Gene (Donna) Mulkey and Therman (Ruthann) Crider, both of Concord, and Lois (Virginia) Crider of Albion; two sisters, two brothers, 16 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife Marie (Cline) Mulkey and four brothers. Funeral services were held Monday, September 22, at the Riverside Baptist Church in Homer, with the Rev. Jimmy Collins officiating. Interment followed at Maple Grove Cemetery in Concord. Kenneth E. Gordon Kenneth E. Gordon, 91, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at Foote Hospital in Jackson. He was born October 14, 1911, in Jackson County, to William Will and Hattie (Rozell) Gordon. Mr. Gordon married Louise Matilda Wildt May 4, 1933, in Jonesville. She preceded him in death in 1996. Mr. Gordon lived in the Litchfield area most of his life. He was self employed in farming and a former member of the Farm Bureau. He is survived by two sons, Charles (Helen) Gordon of Wyoming, MI, and Phillip (Doris) Gordon of Mosherville; 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Herbert, Clem and William Gordon. Funeral services were held Monday, October 6, 2003, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Donald Johnson officiating. Interment followed at Fisher Cemetery. Stewart E. Avery Stewart E. Avery, 72, of Homer, died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at his daughter's home. He was born May 1, 1931, in Homer to Arthur and Martha (Booth) Avery. He married Patricia Dibble August 8, 1953, and she preceded him in death August 5, 2002. Mr. Avery served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was self employed as a milk hauler with his father and brother for many years. He was co-owner of their farm (Avery Brothers and Sons) until 1994. He worked for Kenny Brandt Dairy Farm, and he was most recently employed by Klingaman Brothers Dairy Farm in Jonesville. Mr. Avery played softball for Homer Merchants and Mosherville for many years. He enjoyed his grandchildren and working. He is survived by four daughters, Connie (Bill) O'Dell, Debbie (Jim) Powers, Sherry (Alan) Miller and Judy Warsop, all of Homer; a son, Gary (Melodie) Avery of Homer; a sister, Barbara Butler of Homer; 10 grandchildren and a great grandchild. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Alvin and a sister Bonnie Klingaman. Funeral services were held Monday, October 6, 2003, at the J. Joyce Ellen Campbell Joyce Ellen Campbell, 59, of Litchfield, died Saturday, October 18, 2003, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. Ms. Campbell was born December 15, 1943, in Albion, to Walter C. and Martha Jean (Randolph) Campbell. She enjoyed singing, listening to music and holding her pencils. She lived most of her life in Litchfield. She had been a resident of Litchfield Nursing Centre since 1973. Ms. Campbell is survived by her mother, Martha Campbell Porter; a sister, Sue (Don) Failing; a niece, Kristen (Mike) Miller and a nephew, Kyle Failing, all of Litchfield. Frances E. Wiley Frances E. Wiley, 46, of Homer, died Monday, October 20, 2003, at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Mrs. Wiley was born November 26, 1956, in Jackson, to Leonard D. and Dorsie (Castle) Whittaker. She married Jeffery L. Wiley September 18, 1976. He survives. Mrs. Wiley was a sales clerk for Wal-Mart in Jonesville for 12 years. She was employed by M.C.K. in Litchfield for a few years. She enjoyed bingo, cards, cooking and was a very caring and generous person. She never met a stranger. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wiley is survived by her mother, Dorsie Whittaker of Homer; three nieces, Amanda and Stacey Pittelkow of Charleston, South Carolina, and Jessica Whittaker of Homer; two nephews, Hunter and Cody Chappell of Williamston; a goddaughter, Jenica Longfield of Reading; three godsons, Michael and Justin Creight of Charleston, South Carolina, and Nikkie Johnson of Williamston; two sisters, Pam (Steve) Chappell of Williamston and Sadie Johnson of Mason; and a brother, Tim (Lori) Whittaker of Homer. Margaret Purdy Margaret Purdy, 94, formerly of Litchfield, died at her home in the Fountains at Bronson Place in Kalamazoo, Saturday, November 1, 2003. She was born May 11, 1909, in Fostoria, Ohio, to Harvey and Helen Lambright, the eldest of six children. Mrs. Purdy graduated from Homer High School and studied to become a teacher at Western Michigan Normal College, from which she graduated in 1928. She taught at several country schools in the Homer-Litchfield area. She loved sharing stories of her teaching days, and some of her most cherished moments were visits and calls from former students. She married Nelson B. Purdy June 9, 1934. He preceded her in death. She was a lifelong member of the Homer Methodist Church and attended the Congregational Church in Litchfield. While in Litchfield, Mrs. Purdy was involved in many organizations and supported many community efforts. Her highest priority was the Litchfield Schools. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Baker and Jari O'Hara; a son, John Purdy; five grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother and a sister. A celebration of Mrs. Purdy's life with family and friends will be held at the Litchfield Congregational Church Saturday, November 15, from 2-5 p.m., and at the Fountains at Bronson Place Sunday, November 16, from 2-4 p.m. Contributions to support Litchfield activities important to Mrs. Purdy may be made to the Margaret H. Susan J. Lambright Susan J. Lambright, 81, former Litchfield resident, died Monday, November 3, 2003, at her new residence in Kalamazoo. She was born January 12, 1922, in Mattawan, to Frank and Gail Sackett. Mrs. Lambright graduated from Litchfield Community Schools, where she made several lifelong friends. She attended Cleary Business School in Ypsilanti. She married Samuel D. Lambright on September 9, 1945, and they had recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. He survives. Mrs. Lambright worked a an accountant for Quincy Community Schools for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a resident of Quincy for more than 55 years and was an active member of Quincy United Methodist Church during that period. She cherished life, family, music and her religious faith. She loved gatherings that brought family together and enjoyed watching her descendants mature. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Sarah; a son, Donald; a son-in-law, Alan Himebaugh; three granddaughters, Gaye M. (Coolman) Aaberg, Julia G. Lambright and Lace D. Lambright; two grandsons, Jason B. Coolman and Adam L. Lambright; three great-grandchildren, Chase Coolman, Cameron Aaberg and Emma Aaberg; a brother, Dr. John (Reta) Sackett, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lambright was preceded in death by a brother Charles (Rebecca) Sackett, and two sisters, Mary (Robert) Brummitt and Marvel (Harold) Reiher. Wilda Thornton Wilda (Stub Wallace) Thornton, 80, of Tekonsha, died Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at home surrounded by family. She married Lawrence (Red) Wallace in 1951. He preceded her in death in 1988. She married Harry Thornton January 19, 1994. He survives in Tekonsha. Mrs. Thornton came to Albion in 1952, where she was employed by Corning Glass, Kroger and Foodland for several years. She was a member of Moose Lodge in Coldwater, and the Travel Trailer Club of Michigan. She enjoyed winters in Florida, traveling, crocheting and cooking. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thornton is survived by four daughters, Mary (William) Perry of Union City, Shirley (Gene) Brand of Quincy, Ann Tabor of Marshall and Elaine Vincent of Concord; four stepchildren, Jean Henderson of Battle Creek, Jerry (Dodie) Thornton of Albion, Ken (Sally) Thornton of Union City and Ann Thornton of East LeRoy; four sisters, Freda Kosmerick of Leonidas, Agnes Kimble of Coldwater, Madge Scheidler of Coldwater and Opal Stetler of Coldwater; two brothers, Delmar Dove of Fremont, Indiana, and Jack Dove of Birmingham, Alabama; and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Miller was born May 28, 1952, in Albion, to Fred and Minerva (Prater) Miller. He graduated from Homer High School. He was a long-time farmer and also worked at Corning Glass, Midwest Foundry, Barton Farms and Hayes Albion. Mr. Miller enjoyed white water rafting, hunting, sports and spending time with his sons and granddaughter. He is survived by two sons, Stacey Lee Miller of North Carolina and Raymond A. Darrel "Pappy" Hayes Darrel "Pappy" Hayes, 66, of Homer, died Sunday, November 9, 2003, at Battle Creek Health Systems. He was born April 12, 1937, in Pleasantville, Missouri. His parents were Ted and Nellie (Gray) Jeske. Mr. Hayes married Helen Louise Singleton on September 25, 2003. She survives. He was a police officer for the village of Homer for 18 years, deputy for Calhoun County Sheriff Department for 13 years and worked for Brooks Foundry for 33 years. Mr. Hayes served his country during the Korean conflict in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Homer V.F.W. and Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion. He enjoyed drinking coffee and telling stories. In addition to his wife, Hayes is survived by his mother, Nellie Jeske of Missouri; two stepdaughters, Wanda Brown of Albion and Eleanor Brown of Marengo; a son, Darrel R. Hayes, Jr., of Salt Lake City, Utah; eight stepsons, Harold Burkwalt of Albion, Art Burkwalt of Marshall, Chuck Burkwalt of Springport, Derrell Lawless of Valparaiso, Indiana, Donald Lawless of Litchfield, and David Burkwalt, Dannie Burkwalt and Jeff Lawless, all of Homer; 45 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hayes' father and a sister preceded him in death. A funeral service was held Thursday, November 13, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment followed at Clarence Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Calhoun County Humane Society or Grace Freewill Baptist Church.
Henry F. Scheytt Henry F. Scheytt, 81, of Tucson, Arizona, died Sunday, November 9, 2003. Mr. Scheytt was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Humanity Lodge #29, A. & F. M. in Homer. He served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Scheytt is survived by his wife, Elfreada F. Scheytt, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage on November 4. In addition to his wife, Mr. Scheytt is survived by two sons, Dean R. Scheytt of Tucson and Edward K. Scheytt of Hong Kong; a sister, Catherine Hess of Hollywood, Maryland; and a niece, Joyce McCabe of Henderson, Nevada. A funeral service was held Thursday, November 13, at the Evergreen Mortuary, followed by interment with military honors at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson.
Carol Jean Fleming Carol Jean Fleming, 76, of Jackson, and formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Fleming was born August 15, 1927, in Flint, to Alex and Geraldine (Fitzgerald) Sheerer. She moved to Jackson in 1984. She was self-employed as a home health care aide. Mrs. Fleming enjoyed charity work for needy families, knitting, gardening, crocheting, ink chalk drawing and collecting coins and stamps. Survivors include her mother, Geraldine Sheerer of Litchfield; four daughters, Georgia Fleming of New York, Beth Brown of Florida, Susan Blight of Albion and April Rodesiller of Kentucky; two sons, Terry Fleming of Homer and Alex Fleming of Illinois; a sister, Florence Bills of Litchfield; two brothers, George Sheerer of Litchfield and Jerry Sheerer of Battle Creek; and 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Fleming was preceded in death by her father, a grandson, Andrew Baeumler; and two sisters, Norma VanWert and Joann Houchen. Funeral services were held Monday, November 17, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Interment followed at Cook's Prairie Cemetery in Clarendon Township. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Gladys Alice Wilkinson Gladys Alice Wilkinson, 86, of Litchfield, died Sunday, November 16, 2003, at home. She was born May 19, 1917, in Kalamazoo, to William and Lena (Post) Curtis. She married Kenneth Cecil Wilkinson in 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Wilkinson is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Humphreys of Livonia and Beverly (Linton) Loy of Garden City; five stepchildren, Pauline Roland of Romulus, Arlene Wilkinson of Litchfield, William (Alice) Wilkinson of Livonia, Robert (Margaret) Wilkinson of Fontana, California, and Mary Hommerding of Howell; 29 grandchildren, including Jackie Barnett of Litchfield; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, a son and a grandson. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 20, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Don Lee officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.
Dorothy Ellen Adair Dorothy Ellen Adair, 80, of Litchfield, died Sunday, November 16, 2003, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. She was born February 24, 1923, in Defiance, Ohio, to Harley and Wave (Mason) Burch. Mrs. Adair graduated from Reading High School. She married Floyd Adair March 3, 1943, and he preceded her in death in 1968. Mrs. Adair is survived by a daughter, Linda (Josephus) Palmer of Litchfield; a son, Darrel Adair of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and a great-grandson. Graveside services were held Friday, November 21, at Berg Cemetery, Montgomery, with Pastor Michael Murray officiating. Arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.
Mary A. Frye Mary A. Frye, 78, of Homer, died Thursday, November 20, 2003, at Tendercare in Marshall. She was born February 5, 1925, in Centralia, Illinois, to Homer and Freda (Flick) Martin. She married Donald Frye August 21, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Frye was a homemaker and moved to Homer in 1960 from Illinois. She was a member of Homer Historical Society and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society drives. She enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, visiting with friends at local restaurants, collecting antiques, sewing and upholstery. She is survived by a daughter, Diane Frye of Homer; a son, Martin Frye of Homer; two sisters, Betty (Hank) Veatch of Homer and Edna Connell of Portage; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Smith and Dorothy Edwards. There was no funeral service. Arrangements were handled by the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home. Marguerite Kafka Marguerite Kafka, 87, of Albion, died Friday, November 21, 2003, at Brian's House in Essexville. She was born July 29, 1916, in Bismark, Illinois, to Ross H. and Lydia (Brown) Young. She married Roman B. Kafka, and he preceded her in death in April 1977. Mrs. Kafka was a homemaker most of her life. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Garden Club and enjoyed gardening, yard work and going out to dinner with her friends. She is survived by two sons, Rich Kafka of Midland and Norman Kafka of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Young of Spring Arbor; a niece; a nephew; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harold Young. Funeral services were held Monday, November 24, at First Baptist Church in Albion, with the Rev. Rose M. Schiavone Rose M. Schiavone, 88, of Homer, formerly of Kalamazoo, died peacefully November 24, 2003, at her daughter Pauline's home in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Schiavone was born October 28, 1915, in Coloma, to Anthony and Pietrina Tavolacci. She owned and operated Schiavone Studio in Kalamazoo for 45 years with her husband Joseph, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Schiavone is survived by three children, Louise A. Schiavone of Portage, Pat M. Hawkins of Homer and Pauline Schiavone (John) Birdsall of Kalamazoo; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Nova Schiavone of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Albert A. Schiavone; two sisters, Lena Valenti and Catherine Schiero; and two brothers, Peter and Sam Tavolacci. Friends spent time with the family Friday, November 28, at the Betzler Life Story Funeral Home in Kalamazoo, where a scripture service was held that evening. Carl Moreno Carl Moreno, 46, of Marshall, died Friday, November 28, 2003, at his home in the loving care of his family. Mr. Moreno was born July 4, 1957, in Marshall, to Faustino "Shorty" and Emma (Shepherd) Moreno. He was a lifelong resident of the area. He worked for Manchester Plastics in Homer until it closed. Prior employment included Midwest Metallurgical Lab Inc. and Trim Parts. A marriage to Cathy Smith ended in divorce. Mr. Moreno enjoyed spending time outdoor and involved himself in fishing, hunting and playing horse shoes. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the University of Michigan football team play. Survivors include a son, Steve Moreno, and a daughter, Stacy Moreno, both of Marshall; two grandchildren; his mother, Emma Moreno of Marshall; two sisters, Barbara McGraw of Marshall and Debra Johnson of Homer; a brother, Melvin Moreno of Summerfield, Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held Monday, December 1, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with the Rev. Dennis Hall officiating. Interment followed in Oakridge Cemetery. Thelma M. Van Tassell Thelma M. Van Tassel, 86, of Homer, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at Tendercare of Marshall. Mrs. Van Tassell was born June 7, 1917, in Albion, to Charles Franklin and Hazel Bell (Harwood) O'Dell. She married Kenneth E. Van Tassell August 19, 1936, in Albion. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1996. Mrs. Van Tassell was a resident of the area for most of her life, formerly living in the Harrison area. She was a homemaker and a member of Countryside Baptist Church of Homer. She used to write songs in her youth. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Collins and Rose Miller, both of Homer; two sons, Terry (Sandy) Van Tassell of Security, Colorado, and John (Sharie) Van Tassell of Homer; 33 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred O'Dell of Torrence, California; and a sister, Flossie "DeeDee" Wilson of Marshall. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Burr in 1991; five brothers, Lawrence, Lloyd, LeRoy, Edward and Richard "Bud"; three sisters, Bessie Burk, Zona Lazarus and Mary Logburn; a son-in-law, George C. Collins; and a grandson, Robert Collins. Visitation will be today, (Wednesday) December 3, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Eugene Cousins Eugene Cousins, 74, of Litchfield, died Monday, December 1, 2003, at home. Mr. Cousins was born January 27, 1929, in Woodland, to Jay and Evah (Silsby) Cousins. He farmed in the Onadoga area for many years. He had also worked at Heat Controller Co. in Jackson and was a union representative for the UAW. Mr. Cousins belonged to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Quincy. Survivors include his former wife, Delores I. (Souder) Cousins of Battle Creek; two daughters, Deborah (Raymond) Miller of the Philippines and Mary (Bill) Quick of Homer; two sons, Michael (Barbara) Cousins of King George, Virginia, and Stephen (Terrysue) Cousins of Montgomery; a sister, Esther King of Middleville; and 12 grandchildren. Edward Collins Edward Collins, 75, of Homer, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Collins was born October 6, 1928, in Alger, Ohio, to Jesse and Cindy (Watkins) Collins. He was a resident of the area since 1940, working on a number of farms. Survivors include a sister, Ruth Collins of Albion; a brother, James Collins of Homer; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Clarence Collins. Carol J. Whaley Carol J. Whaley, 58, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at home. She was born September 18, 1945, in Hillsdale, to Amos and Edna Mae Barnett. Mrs. Whaley graduated in 1963 from Jonesville High School. She worked at Alsons and attended the Riverside Baptist Church in Homer. She married John Whaley on March 26, 1963, and he survives. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Whaley is survived by a daughter, Lori (Carl) White of Hillsdale; two sons, John (Janine) Whaley of Quincy and Stephen Whaley of Litchfield; two sisters, Beth (Gordon) Baker of Mosherville and Connie (Estill) Johnson Dorton, Kentucky; two brothers, Edward (Linda) Cole of Jonesville and Duane (Donna) Barnett of Quincy; and eight grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers and three sisters. Jane B. Loveless Jane B. Loveless, 82, of Middleville, died Friday, December 19, 2003, at Pennock Hospital in Hastings. Mrs. Loveless was born August 31, 1921, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Louis and Martha Bacon. She was employed at McGraw Edison Company in Albion for more than 30 years as an air conditioning inspector. Mrs. Loveless was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Middleville. Survivors include two sons, Frank and Daniel Loveless; three grandchildren, Gina, Eric and Jennifer; and a great-grandson, Chandler. Marie W. Corey Marie W. Corey, 88, of Homer, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Tendercare in Albion. Mrs. Corey was born October 16, 1915, in Pennington County, South Dakota, to Ernest and Wilhemina (Smith) Hankins. She married Raymond L. Corey May 30, 1941. He preceded her in death August 16, 1995. Mrs. Corey attended Hadley Corners School and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1933. She continued her education at Western Michigan University and taught in rural schools in Hillsdale and Calhoun counties. She served as secretary of the school board for Eckford Community Schools for 30 years and was awarded the Citizen's Award for service to youth by the School Board Members Association of Calhoun County in 1971. Mrs. Corey was a member of South Litchfield Baptist Church and also attended West Eckford Missionary Church. She enjoyed gardening. Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Corey of Homer; two brothers-in-law, Roscoe Corey of Litchfield and Darrel (Mary) Corey of Toledo; a sister-in-law, Marion (Wayne) Smith of Mt. Clemens; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Hankins, Jr.; a half brother and two half sisters. Betty J. Lewis Betty J. Lewis, 69, of Allen Township, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born May 23, 1934, to Benjamin and Florence (Mason) Cosier. She married Albert L. Lewis October 30, 1954, and he preceded her in death in 1996. At one time, Mrs. Lewis worked at the Shaw Shoe Company in Coldwater, and was later employed at Haas Adult Foster Care Home in Jonesville. Mrs. Lewis is survived by a daughter, Gloria (Gary) Smith of Quincy; a son, Eric Lewis of Allen; two sisters, Ellen Butler of Coldwater and Bonnie Musgrove of East Leroy; four brothers, Glen Griffin of Arizona, Bernard Cosier of Quincy, and Joe Griffin and Larry Griffin, both of Coldwater; and two grandchildren, Brittany and Hunter Smith. Also preceding her in death were her parents, a daughter and a brother. Graveside services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Allen Cemetery. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield.
Opal P. Bender Opal P, Bender, 85, longtime Litchfield resident, died Thursday, December 25, 2003, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born December 1, 1918, in Fostoria, Ohio, to Harvey and Helen (Staub) Lambright and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1936. She married Kenneth C. Bender October 11, 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Bender had resided at MacGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale for the past three years. She enjoyed embroidering and crocheting afghans for the newborn babies in the hospital maternity unit. She is survived by four daughters, Ruth (Lewis) Purk of Coldwater, Eleanor (Dennis) Nelligan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Judy (Bill) Parker of Battle Creek, and Joan (Larry) Downs of Perrysville, Ohio; a son, Jim (Marina) Bender of Litchfield; a brother, S. D. Lambright of Kalamazoo; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and a great-grandchild.
