Robert Harold Houchen Robert Harold Houchen, 73, of Litchfield, passed away Monday, December 25, 2000, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. Mr. Houchen was born March 17, 1927, in Homer Township, to Harold J. and Gladys (Carson) Houchen. He married Mary Louise Harrington on October 23, 1948. She survives. Mr. Houchen was a graduate of Litchfield High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the Naval Reserve. He worked at Wolfinger Hardware in heating and plumbing for 20 years. He worked at the Litchfield Dairy for 19 years. He was a member of the Harry S. Kelley American Legion Post, Litchfield, and life member of the Litchfield I.O.O.F. For 28 years, Mr. Houchen was a fireman with the Litchfield Fire Department. He was a member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church. He was secretary-treasurer for the Litchfield bowling league for many years. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Martha (Martin) Ladd of Litchfield, Vicki Palmatier of Flower Mound, Texas, and Lori (Phil) Mindala of Paw Paw; three sisters, Helen Smith of Litchfield, Dorothy Forshey and Donna Spier, both of Palmetto, Florida; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Houchen was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a brother and his parents. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 28, 2000, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. The Rev. Clyde Wonders officiated and interment followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Litchfield Fire Department or donor's choice.
Viola Mary Baker Viola Mary Baker, 78, of Royal Oak and formerly of Homer, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at her son's home in Royal Oak. She was born May 7, 1922, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Henry T. Kiser and Luella (Eddy) Kiser. In 1952, Mrs. Baker married Wilbur Baker, who preceded her in death in February 1969. She farmed with her husband for many years and she spent 10 years at the Federal Center in Battle Creek as a custodian before retiring and moving to Homer to help in caring for her mother. Mrs. Baker is survived by two sons, Darrell J. (Marcia) Baker of Stafford, Virginia, and Willis J. (Jayne) Baker of Royal Oak; a brother, Bill Kaiser of Kansas City, Kansas, three sisters, Frances M. Ice of Homer, Elizabeth Anderson of Marshall and Beverly A. Yeck of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Kiser. According to her wishes, cremation took place. A memorial service was held Saturday, December 30, 2000, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery. Janis N. Manke Janis N. Manke, 52, of Homer, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital. Mrs. Manke was born April 29, 1948, in Albion, to Bernard and Erna (Bormann) Kabel. She married Frank H. Manke on November 27, 1976. He survives. Mrs. Manke worked for Dr. Henderson for a few years and was a homemaker. She was an active member and president of Homer V.F.W. Auxiliary and a member of the 7th District Color Guard. She enjoyed hummingbirds, African violets and her lawn ornaments. In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Jason Manke of Homer; a brother, Dennis (Anne) Kabel of Ferndale; an uncle, Rev. Curt (Marie) Bormann of Saline; an aunt, Leona Bormann of Albion; a niece, Sarah Kabel of Ferndale; and a nephew, Ben Kabel of Ferndale. Mrs. Manke was preceded in death by her parents. Lucille I. Miller Lucille I. Miller, 83, of Homer, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Miller was born February 27, 1917, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Louis H. and Bess (Byers) Folk. She graduated from Homer High School in 1935. She was a member of the Homer Women's Monday Club and the P.T.A. She enjoyed traveling, reading and sewing. She worked as a seamstress for Falconer's in Homer. Mrs. Miller is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Phillip "Buzz" (Kathy) Martin of Florida and Margaret Michael of Battle Creek; four sons, Chris (JoAnne) Miller of Homer, Tom (Sally) Miller of Homer, Dan (Carolyn) Miller of Marshall and Pat (Debbie) Miller of Homer; five sisters, Lorraine Yost of Florida, Glenna Fast of Coldwater, Jeanne Cutcher of Florida, Elizabeth Neufer of Albion and Charleen Streets of Coldwater; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by the father of her children, James L. Miller; a daughter, Marty Pohl; a brother, Robert Folk; and two sisters, Elousie Griffiths and Irene Luttrell. Funeral services were held Friday, January 5, 2001 at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Robert E. Tuck Robert E. Tuck, 95, of Lake Placid, Florida, passed away in Florida on January 3, 2001. Mr. Tuck was born to Walter E. and Louise C. (Biegel) Tuck in Adams County, Colorado, July 26, 1905. Mr. Tuck married Velma E. Heiser on May 9, 1929. She survives. He owned and operated a dairy farm southeast of Homer for more than 30 years. In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons, Dr. Lyle E. Tuck of Tavernier, Florida, Robert C. Tuck of Marshall, Dr. Ronald L. Tuck of East China, Dr. Gerald W. Tuck and Terrence J. Tuck, both of Great Falls, Montana; a sister, Molly Stringham of Ogden, Utah; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Memorial services will be held in Lake Placid, Florida, in March. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Kathryn N. Sowers Kathryn N. Sowers, 91, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2001. Mrs. Sowers was born July 29, 1909, to John and Margaret (Bolton) Ambrose. She married LaVern B. Sowers, and he preceded her in death in 1989. She was a lifelong resident of the Homer area. Mrs. Sowers was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and cooking. Mrs. Sowers is survived by two daughters, LaVonne VanMeter of Homer and LaDonna (Brad) Stuart of Jackson; four grandchildren, Theresa (Jim) Grover of Jackson, Dawn Harris of Quincy, Douglas (Debbie) VanMeter of Homer, and Cory Stuart of Jackson; two step- grandchildren, Chris Stuart of Tennessee and Robert Stuart of Jackson; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sowers was preceded in death by a son, Gordon LaVern Sowers in 1938, two grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Steven A. Shafe officiating. Hennrietta Fay Brenke Hennrietta Fay "Hanna" Brenke, 67, of Marshall, passed away Monday, January 8, 2001, in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, following a long illness. Mrs. Brenke was born December 4, 1933, in Bronson, to Talmadge Donald and Catherine (Wood) Crabill. She had been a resident of the Marshall area for many years prior to moving to Florida. On July 7, 1950, she married William J. Brenke in Marshall. He survives in Florida. Mrs. Brenke was a homemaker. She enjoyed making quilts and had made a cathedral quilt for each of her family members. She also enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She loved collectables of all kinds, and especially liked to collect glass and ceramic roosters. In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Theresa Calhoun of Litchfield and Billie Niswander of Battle Creek; a son, Michael Brenke of Quincy; five brothers, Edward Crabill of Marshall, Bud Crabill of Battle Creek, Melvin Crabill of Tekonsha, Donald Crabill of Marshall and Butch Brenke of Midland; two sisters, Evelyn Crawford of Jackson and Vivian Devine of Bellevue; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brenke was preceded in death by a son in infancy, Joseph Brenke; and two sisters, Dolly Getts and Julia Hastings. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Craig K. Beryl I. Heiney Beryl I. Heiney, 80, of Homer, passed away Friday, January 12, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Heiney was born April 7, 1920, in Homer, to Charles and Matilda (Burk) Measel. She married Edward N. Heiney October 5, 1937, in Angola, Indiana. Survivors include two daughters, Jean (George) Hemminger of Curtis and Sandra (Neal) Osborn of Albion; a son, Donald E. (Anna Dean) Heiney of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Heiney was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and five sisters. Funeral services were held Monday, January 15, 2001, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Larry Fulton officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens. Mary Blanche (Duffy) Packer Mary Blanche Packer, 92, of Litchfield, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2001, at the "Mac" McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. Mrs. Packer was born June 26, 1908, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Martin J. and Blanche (Baldez) Duffy, Sr. She married Gordon Packer July 26, 1952. He preceded her in death in 1975. Mrs. Packer graduated from Louisville Normal School, earning a degree in education, and from New York University, with a Masters Degree in Dance. She taught at the College of William and Mary, Iowa State University, Louisiana State University, Albion College and Hillsdale College, where she retired after 25 years as Assistant Professor of Dance. She served as Midwest Dance Chairman during her tenure at Hillsdale College. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale. Survivors include two daughters, Melinda Ziegler of Litchfield and Susan Packer of Hillsdale; a son, Lee (Onalee) Packer of Litchfield; a brother, M. J. (Mike) Duffy, Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Packer was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine (Duffy) Cuniffe and Dorothy (Duffy) Glass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today (Wednesday, January 17, 2001) at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale, with Father Thomas Butler officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Packer's memory are requested to the St. Anthony Family Center. Louetta "Irene" Burris Louetta "Irene" Burris, 86, of Homer, died Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at Laurels of Bedford. Mrs. Burris was born December 22, 1914, in Flatrock, Illinois, to Henry and Flora Seewer. She graduated from Casey (Illinois) High School in 1934. She married Dean Burris December 22, 1937, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He preceded her in death in 1998. The couple moved to Homer in 1961. Mrs. Burris was a Cub Scout den mother and was very active in the Homer United Methodist Church. She moved to Battle Creek in October, where she was a resident of NorthePointe Woods, where she touched many hearts and enjoyed every day. Survivors include five sons, Larry of Illinois, William of Whitney, Texas, Donald of Homer, Ronald of Battle Creek and Raymond of Glen Moore, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Burris was preceded in death by a son, Dean Jr.; a daughter Louetta; brothers Ray and Charles Seewer; sisters Edna Stevens and Anna Brown; and a granddaughter, Angela Truluck. Robert E. King Robert E. King, 69, of Homer, died Thursday, January 18, 2001, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mr. King was born April 28, 1931 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, to Melvin and Evelyn (Banks) King. He married Easter Irene Hollon in Jackson, Kentucky, in 1956. She preceded him in death October 18, 1999. Mr. King was a resident of the area since 1976. He worked in Ohio for various construction companies. He loved to fish, and enjoyed gardening and watching auto races. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Dave (Donna) Barlond of Marshall, Mrs. Timothy (Teresa) Collins of Homer, Glenda Moore of Jackson and Mrs. Dotty (Sherry) Hall of Homer; a son, Christopher (Patricia) King of Albion; and 13 grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. King was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Monday, January 22, 2001, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Elizabeth P. Denbrock Elizabeth P. Denbrock, 82, of Homer, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Denbrock was born July 24, 1918, in Homer, to Resa and Pauline (Wagoner) Bartlett. She married Harold Albert Denbrock December 26, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Denbrock had been employed at Randalls Food Products in Tekonsha for 28 years. She was a member of St. Joe Baptist Church, the Homer Senior Citizens Group, and formerly the Tekonsha Senior Citizens Group. She enjoyed crafts, flowers and gardening. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Sharon) Allison of Jackson and Durene Renfro of Tekonsha; two sons, Albert (Diane) Denbrock of Marshall and Harold A. "Jr." (Brenda) Denbrock of Homer; three sisters, Barbara Wilkerson of Battle Creek, Shirley Fowler of Homer and Lucille Williams of Florida; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Thelma Mildred (Flint) Duncan Thelma Mildred (Flint) Duncan, 89, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001, in the "Mac" McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. Mrs. Duncan was born March 26, 1911, in McLean, Illinois, to Jesse T. and Rose (Ashmore) Smith. She graduated from high school in Paulding, Ohio, in 1929. Mrs. Duncan was a farm wife and was also employed at Corning Glass, Litchfield Creamery and Union Steel. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, Moose Lodge, V.F.W. and American Legion. She married John S. Flint and he preceded her in death in 1975. She then married Wymond Duncan and he preceded her in death in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Richard (Mary) Flint of Homer and Howard (Mary Ann) Flint of Texas; four daughters, Barbara (Neal) Daglow of Hiawassee, Georgia, Jacquelyn (Larry) Iveson of Coldwater, Roselee (Douglas) Miller of Litchfield and Linda Sutton of Battle Creek; a sister, Elsie Howard of California; two brothers, Russell Smith of Bloomington, Illinois, and Orville Smith of Peoria, Illinois; two stepchildren, Wymond Duncan of Spokane, Washington, and Rae Duty of Apache Junction, Arizona; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Ila M. Lambright Ila M. Lambright, 89, of Palmetto, Florida, formerly of Litchfield, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida. Mrs. Lambright was born November 10, 1911, in Litchfield, to Merle and Cynthia (Townsend) Riker. She married Richard H. Lambright and he preceded her in death in 1984. She graduated from Litchfield High School. At one time she was employed as a bookkeeper at the Litchfield Dairy. She had also been the personnel director at the Litchfield Bank where she served as secretary to the Board of Directors. Mrs. Lambright was a former member of the Litchfield Business and Professional Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Litchfield United Methodist Church, Palm View Baptist Church in Palmetto, Florida, and she was the treasurer for the ceramics group at Leisure Village in Palmetto. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Betty) Mollenkopf of Apple Valley, Minnesota; a son, Marvin (Barbara) Lambright of Litchfield; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Jean, and a brother. Helen M. Murfield Helen M. Murfield, 82, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Rose Arbor Hospice. Mrs. Murfield was born September 2, 1918, in Albion, to John and Nelly (Warner) Widdup and spent her childhood in Litchfield. Mrs. Murfield worked at the Upjohn Company. She married John Murfield August 30, 1949. She was a member of the Otsego Seventh Day Adventist Church and later attended the Kalamazoo Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed nature, including gardening, and especially loved her flowers. She also enjoyed cooking. She liked arts and crafts, traveling with the seniors group, bird watching and her cats. Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Jim) Monroe of Otsego; a son, Dale (Shelly) Murfield of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Kristina Bishop, Jonathon and Michael Murfield and Michael Monroe. Mrs. Murfield was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Services were held at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Ted Toms of the Otsego Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Private interment followed in Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Evelyn Viola Simmons Evelyn Viola Simmons, 88, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at Hospice House of Holland. Mrs. Simmons was born July 20, 1912, at her parents' home in Homer, to Ervin J. and Elizabeth (Marshall) Warley. She graduated from Concord High School in 1930. She attended college at Jackson County Normal School in Michigan Center. She taught several years at the Wright country school in Albion. She married Hugh Simmons June 15, 1935, at her parents' home in Concord. He preceded her in death October 24, 2000. Mrs. Simmons spent most of her married life in the Homer and Albion area. She and her husband spent winters in Florida during their retirement years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Albion, Homer, Bradenton, Florida, and most recently, Holland. She had been involved in the United Methodist Women's Group, the Monday Club and the Garden Club of Homer, and the Entre Nous Club of Albion. She enjoyed fishing and square dancing. Survivors include two sons, Robert (Christine) Simmons and Richard (Ruthann) Simmons, both of Holland; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 3, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Bill Dobbs officiating. Interment followed at Cook's Prairie Cemetery. She was born September 16, 1911, in Calhoun County, to Clarence and Lydia (Wirebaugh) Bowersox. Mrs. Southwell was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, sewing and flowers. Survivors include a son, LaVern C. (Janice) Southwell of Sturgis; a daughter, Diana Root of Centreville; seven grandchildren, James Southwell of Lexington, Kentucky; Kevin Southwell of Sturgis; Karla Shimkus of Homer; Katie Wymer of Parma; Shiela Bailey of Battle Creek; Michael Howard of Constantine; and Teresa Jackson of Nashville, Tennessee; and 12 great-grandchildren. June L. Smith June L. Smith, 81, of Homer, passed away Friday, February 9, 2001, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. Mrs. Smith was born September 3, 1919, in Three Oaks, to Mark and Eva (Tabodo) Sherrill. She graduated from Three Oaks High School. She married Clarence Smith June 24, 1937, and he preceded her in death in 1994. For several years Mrs. Smith was employed at the Homer Pharmacy and Amsbaugh's Furniture. She was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Homer and a volunteer at Homer Caring and Sharing thrift shop. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing bridge and reading. She also enjoyed her family and her cats. Survivors include a son, Richard (Jean) Smith of Homer; three daughters, Ginny (Gerry) Schultz of Homer, Judy (Tom) Nichols of Mecosta and Cheryl (Roger) Saylor of Holt; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Donnie Williams of Grand Junction. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bonnie Jean; and her stepfather, Charles Huss. Doris A. Knapp Doris A. Knapp, 81, of Litchfield, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mrs. Knapp was born October 30, 1919, in Racine, Wisconsin, to William and Florence (Sellens) Sommers and attended Marshall High School. She married Rollin F. Knapp March 28, 1937, and he preceded her in death in 1982. At one time Mrs. Knapp was a member of the Extension Club, Mother's Club and the Fredonia Card Club. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rex (Carol) Lambright of Litchfield; two sons, Richard (Gloria) Knapp of California and William (Luanne) Knapp of Homer; a sister, Cecil Baker of Battle Creek; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Knapp was preceded in death by two brothers and a great-grandchild. Graveside services were held Saturday, February 17, 2001, at the West Clarendon Cemetery, with Rev. David Nicholls officiating. Douglas Neil Ruger Douglas Neil Ruger, 61, of Litchfield, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2001, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Ruger was born February 26, 1939 in Lansing to Ivan and Mildred (McGill) Ruger. He was a 1957 graduate of Jonesville High School and a veteran of the US Air Force. He married Lynn Hitter September 29, 1971, and she survives. Mr. Kruger was employed at Buddy's Mini Mart in Litchfield. He was a member of the American Modelers Association and the Irish Hills Radio Control Club. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ruger is survived by three sons, Michael Ruger of North Adams, Jason Ruger of Addison and Terry Ruger of Litchfield; his mother and stepfather, Mildred and Vaughn Rogers of Coldwater; two brothers, Tom Ruger of Coldwater and Bob Ruger of Round Lake, Illinois; a half brother, Gary Rogers of Ft. Gratiot; a half sister, Barb Lake of Hillsdale; two stepsisters, Janet McBride of Bryan, Ohio, and Suzie Stephenson of Belle Center, Ohio; and a stepbrother, Larry Rogers of Jerome. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held Monday, February 19, 2001, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.
Annabelle M. Enos Annabelle M. Enos, 87, of Lawton and formerly of Homer, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Tendercare Nursing Facility following a short illness. Mrs. Lawton was born December 28, 1913, in Butler, to Albert and Minnie (Ruskuski) Denbrock. She was united in marriage to Newman I. Enos on December 14, 1935 in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death August 24, 1997. Together they had celebrated more than 61 years of marriage. Survivors include four daughters, Mary (George) Lewis of Kalamazoo, Joan (Robert) Stanly of Henderson, Kentucky, Linda Webster of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Gloria (Gary) Trueblood of Lafayette, Indiana; a sister, Monabelle (Fredrick) Denbrock Prentice of Michigan Center; a brother, Fredrick (Ruth) Denbrock of Homer; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Enos was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Harold and Cecil Denbrock, and a sister, Katheryn Denbrock Runyon. Funeral services were held Monday, February 19, 2001, at the chapel of the Betzler-Thompson Funeral Home in Paw Paw, with Pastor Ron Brooks officiating. Private burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery. Ruth M. Drumm Ruth M. Drumm, 86, longtime Litchfield resident, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2001, at the Albion Manor Care Center. Mrs. Drumm was born May 21, 1914, in Tekonsha, to Frank and Louise M. (Bates) Thomas. She married Clarence Drumm in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1979. Mrs. Drumm attended South Litchfield Baptist Church, and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and WWII Mothers. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Wadelick of Marshall; three sons, Kenneth (Marilyn) Thomas of Marshall, Anthony (Dian) Schebella, Sr. of Coldwater and Leonard (Mary) Drumm of Huntington, Indiana; two sisters, Bessie Ivey of Ceresco and Frances Saunders of Tekonsha; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and stepsons and stepdaughters. Preceding her in death were daughters, Evelyn and Joyce; two brothers; and six sisters. Funeral services are today (Wednesday, February 21, 2001) at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to the WWII Mothers.

Lola Dresser Lola Dresser, 101, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at Thurston Woods Village. Mrs. Dresser was born September 30, 1899, in Homer, to Elmer and Edna (Rogers) Juckette. She graduated from Homer High School, attended Western Michigan Teachers College and Ypsilanti Normal, from which she received a teaching certificate, and then taught in country schools for several years until her marriage, when she became a homemaker. She married Raymond H. Dresser May 13, 1923, in Detroit. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Dresser was active in First Presbyterian Church; the Eastern Star; Sturgis Womans Club, where she was a Life Member; Sturgis Garden Club, which was the love of her life; Hospital Decorating Guild; and Klinger Lake Country Club, where she was an avid golfer and club champion. She hosted the annual St. Joseph County Republican Party held each summer at her home and was also a regular bridge player until she entered the nursing home two-and-a-half years ago. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Miller of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Marilyn Callahan of San Francisco; a son, Raymond H. (Gretchen) Dresser, Jr. of Sturgis; five grandchildren, David (Norma) Miller of Fayetteville, Georgia, Mark Callahan of Sedona, Arizona, John (Mary) Dresser of Sturgis, Amy Dresser (Don Frank) of LaGrange, Illinois and Marcia (Kurt) Inman of Sturgis; eight great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver Alice Sites of Sturgis. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dresser was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Strong. Religious services and a celebration of the life of Lola Dresser were held at the First Presbyterian Church of Sturgis with Rev. Mike Wicks officiating. Interment followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Monabelle Kreger Monabelle Kreger, 93, passed away Friday, February 23, 2001, at Eaton Manor in Charlotte. Mrs. Kreger was born August 7, 1907, in Homer Township, to Edward J. and Myrtle E. (Wagoner) Heath. She married Harold W.C. Kreger on April 6, 1927, in Albion. He preceded her in death in 1959. Mrs. Kreger was a resident of Albion before moving to Park Forest, Jackson, in 1977. Due to failing health, she then moved to Eaton Manor Nursing Home, where she has resided since December 2000. She graduated from Homer High School in 1925 in a class of 22 students, and moved to Albion after her marriage. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and belonged to the Ladies Aid. She and her husband operated a farm on Van Wert Road until his death, when she sold the farm and moved to Albion. She worked in various places, including the Duck Lake Golf Club as a hostess, and Albion Public Schools as a bus driver. Survivors include three daughters, Ellen (Carl) Dingman of Jackson, Joyce (Duane) Shrontz of Marshall and Karen (Lonnie) Cords of Parma; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a few nieces and nephews; special cousins, Gerald and Dorothy Allen and Zella Cook; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Heath. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kreger was preceded in death by a sister, Matie Smith; three brothers, Donald, Glenn and Clarence Heath; and a son-in-law, Robert Scripter. Funeral services were held Monday, February 26, 2001, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albion, with the Rev. James A. Waddell presiding. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Albion. William A. Drinkwater William A. Drinkwater, 51, of Albion, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2001, at Trillium Hospital in Albion. Mr. Drinkwater was born in Litchfield, the son of Clinton and Bertha (Carlisle) Drinkwater. He married Susan Jones in 1981. She survives. He was employed as general manager at Specialty Casting in Springport for the past 26 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trips to the casino, harness racing, and he grew the best sweet corn and tomatoes. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Trina Drinkwater of Kalamazoo; a son, John (Holly) Drinkwater of Eaton Rapids; two stepdaughters, Dawn (Matt) Blair of Albion and Sheila Weddington of Springport; a stepson, Daniel (Shelly) Weddington of Albion; seven sisters, Doris Rowbotham and Janice Butler, both of Homer, Marlene Howell and Carol Hebert, both of Albion, Joyce Piepkow of Springport, Beverly Cox of Otsego, and June Bigelow of Texas; a brother, Dwight Drinkwater of Springport; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Kenny Weddington, and a brother, Gerald Drinkwater. Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the J. Hal Dane Smith Hal Dane Smith, 66, of Homer, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Trillium Hospital in Albion. Mr. Smith was born January 25, 1935, in Coldwater, to Harold and Marjorie Smith. He resided in Coldwater for many years prior to moving to Homer several years ago. He worked for 18 years for Taylor Stationary in Coldwater, until retiring in 1998. He enjoyed going to flea markets and gas and steam shows. He married Mildred E. Drumm May 18, 1975 in Coldwater. She preceded him in death December 10, 1994. Survivors include his companion, Stella Kiersey of Homer; and a stepdaughter, Martha Kaye Eldridge of Kalamazoo. In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Bonnie Jo Nuyen. There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday), March 7, at Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall.

Mr. Fansler was born January 29, 1919, in Cecil, Ohio. He was the son of Ray D. and Catherine (Cline) Fansler, Sr. He was a farmer and fuel oil distributor for Marathon Oil Co. Survivors include a daughter, Janine (Loren) Felabom of Berne, Indiana; a son, Gary Fansler of Reading; a sister, Ilo Holly of Massachusetts; a brother, Henry Fansler of Hillsdale; and two grandchildren. Mr. Fansler was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Jr. and Irvin; and a sister, Mary Reed. Funeral services were held Friday, March 9, 2001, at the George White Funeral Home, Reading. Harold E. Randall Harold E. Randall, 83, former Litchfield resident, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Dove Health Care in Lake Wales, Florida. Mr. Randall was born September 23, 1917, in Litchfield. He was the son of Edward and Lela Randall and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1935. He was a lifelong farmer and was also active in horse racing as a trainer and driver of harness horses. He is survived by his wife, Arlene Randall, of Waverly, Florida. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Richard (Terri) Randall of Orange City, Florida; a daughter, Brenda (Marty) Hall of Manitou Beach; two sisters, Clara (Carl) Dawson of Litchfield and Mary Shields of Litchfield; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Randall was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Richard Randall. Cremation took place and memorial services were held in Florida. Barbara Ann Snyder Barbara Ann Snyder, 67, of Allen, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Snyder was born January 11, 1934, in Greene County, Indiana, to Cephus and Damie (Jones) King. She was employed at Acorn Manufacturing in Quincy for seven years. On July 3, 1954, she married Ralph L. Snyder. He preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie (Gary) Tappenden of Coldwater; three sons, Dan (Joyce) Snyder of Allen, Don (Kathy) Snyder of Battle Creek and Darrell (Linda) Snyder of Quincy; three brothers, Russell King of California, Tom King of New Mexico and Robert King of Colorado. Frances N. DeBoer Frances N. DeBoer, 67, of Battle Creek and formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Battle Creek Health System. Mrs. DeBoer was born October 13, 1933, to Jesse Lee and Frances N. (Stuart) Barger in Dayton, Tennessee. She married Don Moor in 1956 and co-owned Don Moor's Farm Fresh Meat Co. in Homer for 25 years. She later married Doak DeBoer in 1988 in Kalamazoo. He preceded her in death in 1990. Survivors include two sisters, Erin "Katie" Ferguson of Naples, Florida, and Sarah Yates of Battle Creek; a brother, Gene Barger of Winter Haven, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. DeBoer was preceded in death by a brother, Clayton Barger, and two sisters, Amy Joyner and Sue Bagwell. Frances M. "Peggy" Hayes Frances M. "Peggy" Hayes, 82, of Homer, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Litchfield Nursing Centre in Litchfield. Mrs. Hayes was born August 31, 1918, in Charlotte, to Pearl and Fern Few. She married William Burkwalt, whom is now deceased, and married Darrel "Pappy" Hayes in 1966. He survives in Homer. Her favorite pastimes were making crafts, sewing, crocheting, baking and flowers. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hayes is survived by two daughters, Wanda Brown and Eleanor (Lawrence) Brown, both of Albion; five sons, Harold Burkwalt of Albion, Art (Jerry) Burkwalt of Marshall, David (Jewell) Burkwalt of Homer, Chuck (Thelma) Burkwalt of Springport, and Dannie (Wallean) Burkwalt of Homer; a sister, Jane Wheeler of Battle Creek; a brother, Bill Few of Albion; 32 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. John Mortzfeldt John Mortzfeldt, 77, of Homer, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Battle Creek Health System. Mr. Mortzfeldt was born March 1, 1924, in Homer Township, to Carl John and Marguerite M. (Rockwell) Mortzfeldt. He married Anna Bell Honolulu "Honey" Warner. She preceded him in death. Mr. Mortzfeldt was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Homer schools. He had been employed for 42 years at Calhoun Foundry in Homer. He served with the United States Airborne Unit in World War II, where he was a D-Day paratrooper, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, March 23, 2001, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with his nephew, Ricky R. Rockwell, officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Military honors were given by the Claude E. Hale VFW Post of Marshall.
Dominic-Allen Emmanuel Myles Dominic-Allen Emmanuel Myles, 5, of Marshall, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Dominic was born October 5, 1995, in Jackson, to Walter Allen and Ann Marie (Locke) Myles II. They survive. He attended kindergarten classes at the Fern-person Elementary School in Olivet. Dominic was a member of the Challenger 4-H Club in Marshall and the American Rabbit Breeder Association. He attended Marshall Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed bowling and participated in the Snack and Bumper League with his brother at Marshall Lanes. In addition to his parents, Dominic is survived by a brother, Matthew Myles; a sister, Lydia-Katherine Myles; his maternal grandparents, Terry and Doris Locke of Marshall; his paternal grandparents, Walter and Bertha Myles, Sr. of Westville, Ohio; maternal great-grandparents Katherine Walter of Marshall and Harold Locke of Eaton Rapids; aunts Becky Traxler, Becky Locke and Shirley Locke, an uncle Richard Locke; six immediate cousins; and numerous other relatives. Willard O. "Chief" McGill Willard O. "Chief" McGill, 92, of Hillsdale, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. Mr. McGill was born in Litchfield Township June 25, 1908, to Otto J. and Emma Grace (Lowry) McGill. He farmed in the area and had also worked for the telephone company. Survivors include a son, Eric Dean McGill of Orlando, Florida; a sister, Mildred Rogers of Coldwater; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Four sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Daniel Pann officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Kenneth J. Renfro Kenneth J. Renfro, 82, former resident of Homer and Tekonsha, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City, Florida. Mr. Renfro was born in Effingham, Illinois, September 28, 1918, to John and Margaret (Vail) Renfro. He married Arlonne Hamman in Calhoun County September 18, 1965. She survives in Dade City. Mr. Renfro moved from the area to Florida two years ago. He was a farmer and had a dairy herd. He was also a silver brazier, working at McGraw Edison in Albion and later at Addison Products in Jonesville, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Renfro is survived by a son, Charles (Nancy) Renfro of Parma; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Newsome of Quincy; a daughter-in-law, Dorene Renfro of Tekonsha; a brother, Rev. Dale (Louise) Rentfrow of Leslie; a sister, Mrs. Veleira Dekker of Holland; 27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; two stepsons, Robert (Bette) D'Water of Dade City, Florida, and Michael (Alberta) D'Water of Homer; and three stepdaughters, Mrs. Kerry (Sharon) Blashfield, Mrs. Albert (Carolyn) Barnes and Mrs. Robert (Charleen) Woods, all of Coldwater. Mr. Renfro was preceded in death by a son, Jim; his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Daryl Rentfrow; and a sister, Virginia Miller. Richard C. Wade Richard C. Wade, 66, of Litchfield, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mr. Wade was born September 15, 1934, in Jackson, to Carroll "Jack" and Gladys (Southfield) Wade. He married Shirley Van Voorhis in 1955, and she preceded him in death in 1987. He then married Vena Foust on November 24, 1989, and she survives. Mr. Wade graduated from Litchfield High School in 1952. Since 1960, he owned and operated Wade Construction in Litchfield. He was a member of the National Guard for eight years and the Litchfield Fire Department for 38 years. He served as fire chief for 26 years, retiring in 1995. Mr. Wade was also a charter member of the Litchfield Lions Club and recipient of the district's Lion of the Year award. He had also been honored at a Litchfield Civic Dinner with their Man of the Year award. In addition to his wife, Mr. Wade is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Roger (Jerilyn) Ochsenrider of Tehachapi, California, Carol Ladd of Hillsdale, and Mrs. Jeff (Sandra) Graves of Boulder, Colorado; a sister, Mrs. Russell (Delores) Smith of Quincy; two brothers, Terry (Darlene) Wade of Litchfield and Thomas (Marilyn) Wade of Longwood, Florida; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Litchfield United Methodist Church, with Revs. Clyde Wonders and R. John Thompson officiating. Interment followed at Mt. John Blumenstock John Blumenstock, 85, of East Lansing, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Lansing. Mr. Blumenstock was born February 13, 1916, in Battle Creek, to Frederick Carl and Lillian (Hubble) Blumenstock. He married Mildred Gladys Kroul September 23, 1940, in Hillsdale. She preceded him in death in 1995. During WWII, Mr. Blumenstock felt it was his duty to join the Air Force, and made it his career for 23 years. He was called "Big John" when he flew the "Hard T Find". He was a lead bomber pilot and led waves of bombers across Germany. He retired in 1963 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was an avid card player and spoke two foreign languages fluently. He was a golfer and was extremely family orientated. Mr. Blumenstock is survived by a son, Delmer E. Blumenstock of Homer; a daughter, Corinne Lee of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and her children, Toni McCreash, Edward K. Lee III and great-grandson, Dustin Lee, of Virginia; a son, Brent Blumenstock of Jackson, New Jersey, and his children, Fred, Dan and Valarie; and a sister, Margaret Lindroth of Clearwater, Florida. In addition to his wife, Mr. Blumenstock was preceded in death by a brother, Duane (Buck) Blumenstock. No visitation or service is planned. Juanita L. Landis Juanita L. Landis, 88, of Homer, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. Mrs. Landis was born May 18, 1912, in Branch County, to Charles D. and Olive (Boyer) Loose. She married Theodore "Ted" Landis February 11, 1938, in Coldwater. He preceded her in death October 31, 1981. Mrs. Landis was a life resident of the Homer and Coldwater area. She was a graduate of Coldwater High School and had attended Spring Arbor College. She was a member of the Calhoun County Extension Club, Calhoun County Farm Bureau and the women's organization of the Farm Bureau, a member of the Litchfield Farmer's Club, was very active at Litchfield Manor activities, and was a member of the Burt Hill Farm Bureau. Katherine J. (Holibaugh) McRae Katherine J. (Holibaugh) McRae, 60, of Reading, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her home. Mrs. McRae was born November 12, 1940, in Clarendon township, to John and Alberta (Sherman) Crandell. She married Richard McRae April 13, 1991, and he survives. Mrs. McRae had been a nurse's aid at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility for 18 years. She enjoyed camping, raising chickens, and collecting wind chimes, Coke memorabilia and clocks. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McRae is survived by three daughters, Phyllis (Clifford) Siebert of Reading, Diana (Douglas) Boatman of Hillsdale, and Jeanne (Dennis) Manier of Montgomery; five sons, Glenn (Charlene) Crandell of Reading, Stephen (Sally) Holibaugh of Montgomery, Stanley (Shirley "Arlene") Holibaugh of Camden, Harry (Darlene) Holibaugh of South Carolina, and Gary Holibaugh of Jackson; a sister, Betty Seiler of Girard; a brother, Harry Crandell of Battle Creek; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Holibaugh; a grandson, Tony; four brothers and three sisters. Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2001, at 11 a.m., the Allen Cemetery, with Rev. Jim Mason officiating. Lulu M. Meyers Lulu M. Meyers, 91, formerly of Litchfield, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Ganton Countryside Care Center in Jackson. Mrs. Meyers was born February 12, 1910, in Litchfield, to Hiram and Mina (Nickerson) Allen. She was retired from Kellogg Cereal Co. in Battle Creek. Mrs. Meyers valued an education, and one of her greatest prides was the fact all eight of her children graduated from high school and five graduated from college. She enjoyed being a chaperone on the 1945 class trip to Mackinac Island. During the 1940s, she also served as librarian at the Litchfield library. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Loel (Betty M.) Stanaway of Fargo, North Dakota; four sons, Marvin B. Smith of Battle Creek, Ronald L. (Inella) Smith of Parma, Russell D. (Dolores) Smith of Quincy; and Allen K. (Romona) Smith of Perry; 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Owen Smith, Harry Webb and Walter Meyers; two sons; a daughter; three brothers; a sister; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 19, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Royce Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Dora Crall Dora Crall, 88, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at her daughter's residence. Mrs. Crall was born February 15, 1913, in Clayton, Kentucky, to Willey and Sarah (Nichols) Cole. She married Edward Crall May 24, 1943, and he survives. She moved to Michigan 63 years ago. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Hillsdale, and enjoyed traveling and her evening car ride. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Gunst of Litchfield; a son, Charles Brown of Carnegie, Oklahoma; 21 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Eugene Barnett and James Brown; a daughter, Mollie; two brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held Friday, April 20, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery. Bessie A. Patterson Bessie A. Patterson, 91, of Parma, died April 18, 2001, at the Litchfield Nursing Centre. Mrs. Patterson was born April 9, 1910, in Clarksville, Tennessee, to John and Loray (Paulk) Weakley. She married Elmer Patterson February 23, 1926. He preceded her in death November 7, 1984. Mrs. Patterson came to Michigan in 1941 and lived in Charlotte. She moved to Parma in 1942. She worked for Campbell's Orchard. She worked for Ganton Nursing Home for 22 years and then worked for Marlin Manor in Jackson for 11 years. Survivors include three daughters, Frances (Jack) Winter of Battle Creek, Edith (Douglas) Tarr of Albion and Ann (Paul) Cleland of Reading; two sisters, Mary Alice Hogan of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Edna Sanders of Parma; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a few great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Donald Tarr, and four brothers. A private graveside service was held at Chapel Cemetery, with the Rev. Henry H. Truax Henry H, Truax, 65, of Albion, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Truax was born September 29, 1935, in Homer, to Lewis and Lula (Juckett) Truax. Mr. Truax lived most of his life in the Homer area and was retired from Manchester Plastics. He had also worked at Ideal Castings and Albion Malleable. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed handcrafts, camping and being a handyman. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. James (DorEtta) Riddle of Homer and Mrs. Roger (Mary) Newsome, Belinda Truax and Mrs. Richard (Tammie) Hays, all of Albion; three sons, James (Cathy) Truax of Litchfield, Ralph (Michelle) Truax of Homer and Paul Truax of Litchfield; three sisters, Dorothy Thomas and Mrs. Bill (Imogene) DeVries, both of Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Bud (Barbara) Marshall of Homer; one brother, Darrell Burrows of Lansing; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Waid, a son, a grandchild, a brother and four sisters. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 3, at noon, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Mary Barbara Stanton Mary Barbara Stanton, 89, longtime Mosherville area resident, passed away Friday, April 27, 2001, at the Country Living Adult Foster Care in Hillsdale. She was born January 16, 1912, in Mt. Clemens, to Fred and Anna (Mousilo) Ballor. She married Norvel F. DuBay in 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1942. She married Robert J. Stanton in April of 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1968. Mrs. Stanton was owner-operator of Stanton's Grocery and Mary's Flowers in Mosherville. She was also postmaster in Mosherville for many years. Mrs. Stanton started the African Violet Club, was a member of the Mosherville Grange, the Mosherville Ladies Aid Society, St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Pamona Grange. Survivors include two daughters, Marlene (Fred) Miller of Mosherville and Martha (Martin) Kunder of Riverside, Illinois; eight sons, Norvel (Mary) DuBay of Charlotte; David (Laura) Stanton of Jackson; Walter Stanton of Jackson; Fred (Mary) Stanton of Litchfield; Joe (Kay) Stanton of Kalamazoo; Jerry Stanton of Allen; Dale Stanton of Riverside, Illinois, and Duane Stanton of Jonesville; three sisters, Jeanette Fox of Concord; Helen Wonnel of Kansas and Lois Coen of Virginia; two brothers, Norman Ballor and Edward Ballor of Oscoda; 28 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Stanton was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Timothy John "T.C." Cole Timothy John "T.C." Cole, 34, of Homer, died Thursday, May 3, 2001. Mr. Cole was born March 1, 1967, in Albion, to Victor J. and Sally A. (Kiersey) Cole. They survive. Mr. Cole was a core machine operator for Harvard Industries since 1987. He was a graduate of Homer High School and enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting, raising rottweilers and just being out-of-doors. In addition to his parents, survivors include his fiancée Robin Schoneman of Homer; two sisters, Christel Arnold and Sarah Robinette, both of Albion; two brothers, Karl Cole of Albion and Matthew Cole of Battle Creek; seven nieces; a nephew; and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Cole. Funeral services were held Monday, May 7, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens.
Sheri L. Etter Sheri L. Etter, 31, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Homer, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Mrs. Etter was born January 11, 1970, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Raymond Bender and Mary Cole. They survive. She graduated from Homer High School in 1988 and attended Western Michigan University. Mrs. Etter was assistant manager of Big Joe's Southside Deli. She was a member of the Maquis Forces Kalamazoo, a Sci-Fi fan group for Star Trek. She enjoyed the Internet and developed many friendships. She married Chad Etter June 22, 1991 and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Anastasia, 9, and Kimberly, 5; a son, Drake, 7; two stepchildren, Barry, 16, and Leza, 15; a brother, Marty Bender of Kalamazoo; her father, Raymond (Kathleen) Bender of Homer; her mother, Mary (Dennis) Cole of Marshall; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Philip L. Duff Philip L. Duff, 66, of Homer, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Borgess Medical Center. Mr. Duff was born March 1, 1935, in Jackson, to Frank and Virgie (Gaw) Duff. He married Rachel Wood November 23, 1956, and she survives. Mr. Duff received his master's degree from Eastern Michigan. He taught for the Vandercook Lake Schools for nine years, then moved to Homer in 1966 and became principal of the Homer Elementary School before retiring in 1997. For several years he was a Cub Scout Master, worked with abused children, was a member of the M.E.A., and played the organ for the Church of God in Marshall and Jackson. He found great joy in gardening and playing the organ. In addition to his wife, Mr. Duff is survived by two daughters, Christine Bush of Marshall and Deborah (Chuck) Payne of Homer; a son, Michael (Debra) Duff of St. Petersburg, Florida; a brother, Jack Duff of Pryor, Oklahoma; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Duff. Funeral services were held Monday, May 14, 2001, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Michael Duff and Rev. Betty Norris Anderson Betty Norris Anderson, 82, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater of complications following a stroke. She was born September 1, 1919, in Litchfield, to Earl C. and Nina M. (Tompkins) Norris. Mrs. Anderson retired from Simpson Industries, Inc. of Litchfield in 1981. She was a 13 year survivor of breast cancer and an active member of Living for Today, a cancer support group. She was also an active volunteer with the Community Health Center of Branch County Auxiliary. Survivors include a son, Phil Anderson of Coldwater; a daughter, Vicki Palmerton of Coldwater; two grandchildren, Jamie Hadfield of Angola, Indiana, and Jen Palmerton of Coldwater; two great-grandchildren, Kylie and Caitlin Hadfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Wilma Norris (1905-1906); Geraldine Stanley (1909-1973), Eleanor M. Nelligan (1915-1996) and her twin sister, Beth Phelps (1919-1992); and a brother, Elton Hurth Norris (1906-1939). Mosley and Roby (Freeman) Tompkins, her great-grandparents, came from New York and settled near Litchfield in the 1850s. Warren Tompkins, her grandfather, served in Company C, 6th Michigan Infantry, during the Civil War. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Living for Today, or the hospital auxiliary in care of Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater, or the New Hope Unit at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. Elwood K. Potter Elwood K. Potter, 74, of Homer, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Tendercare Riverside in Battle Creek. Mr. Potter was born April 22, 1927, in Jackson County, to Forrest Clayton and Beulah (Dickinson) Potter. He married Pearlnita Wildt September 12, 1948, and she preceded him in death. Mr. Potter served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was employed at the Goodyear Tire Company in Jackson for 39 years. He also drove a school bus for Homer Community Schools for 12 years. Mr. Potter belonged to the V.F.W., Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star and Michigan Travel Trailer Club. He was an avid square dancer, belonging to the M-99er's Square Dance Club, and enjoyed camping and traveling. Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Jean Potter of Battle Creek; two sons, Robert (Sandy) Potter of Jackson and Paul (Jenny) Potter of Homer; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and his parents. Funeral services were held Monday, May 21, 2001, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Rev. Phil Stout officiating. On August 22, 1959, she married Earl Burke. He preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Bryant was a nursing home administrator for an adult foster care home in Albion since 1977. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and bird watching. She retired from Addison Products and was a member of the Jonesville Baptist Church. On July 2, 1955, she married Clifford J. Rowse, and he preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Michael was born April 6, 1940, in Lansing, to Herbert F. and Yvonne W. (Clark) Smatts. She married John Michael November 1, 1988, and he survives. Mrs. Michael worked for Bell Telephone as a phone operator, owned and operated Domino Pizza in Lansing for seven years, and also worked for Munier Heating & Cooling in Albion. She spent most of her life in the Lansing area and moved to Homer in 1987, where she enjoyed camping and gardening. In addition to her husband, survivors include her mother, Yvonne Smatts of Lansing; three daughters, Debbie S. Winagrad, Denise Schweid and Lisa Quinting, all of Denver, Colorado; a stepdaughter, Emily Michael of Detroit; a son, Bob Charles of Florida; two step-sons, Brent Michael and Scott Michael, both of Homer; a sister, Diana Arnett of Lansing; two nieces; a nephew; and 10 grandchildren. She worked as a secretary in the business office of Hazel Findlay County Manor. She married Scott DeWitt December 21, 1979 and he survives. Donnis C. Moor Donnis (Donnie) Earl Moor, 70, of Colon, and formerly of Homer, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Moor was born July 27, 1930, in Homer, to Milford and Edna (Reynolds) Moor. He owned and operated Don Moor's Farm Fresh Meats Inc. in Homer for more than 25 years, specializing in custom butchering with wholesale and retail sales. He employed approximately 40 local employees. His hobbies included boating, fishing, spending time with his friends and playing poker. Surviving are sisters Virginia J. Hawkins of Tekonsha, Marjorie Baker of Port Hope, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Steven and Robert Moor. Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday, July 14, 2001, at 11 a.m., at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Larry Fulton officiating. The family will be receiving friends at J.D. Howard H. Smith Howard H. Smith, 91, lifelong resident of Homer, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mr. Smith was born September 24, 1909, in Homer Township, to Arthur W. and Carrie (Hisler) Smith. On September 11, 1934, he married Elsie Humphrey and she survives, He graduated from Homer High School in 1927 and from Cleary College in Ypsilanti in 1930. Following his education, he was employed at the Michigan Dairy Farm plant for 12 years. He then purchased the farm implement business from Amos Hamilton in 1944 and became self-employed in the Howard H. Smith Farm Implements business from 1944-1968. Mr. Smith served on the Board of Directors for Calhoun State Bank, which later became City Bank and Trust. He was a member of Homer First Presbyterian Church, the Round Table at the Knife and Fork, local Humanity Lodge No. 29 F.&A.M., and the Homer Village Council. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, golfing and had a great interest in all kinds of sports. He sponsored bowling teams in the Homer Bowling League. He and his wife spent many winters in Florida. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Nancy Frye of Homer; two sons, Arthur (Karen) Smith of Homer and David (Barbara) Smith of Tekonsha; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Walter, William and Fred. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14, 2001, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion with the Rev. William J. Rogers William J. Rogers, 79, of Homer, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mr. Rogers was born May 20, 1922, in Eaton Rapids, to William and Blanche (Ely) Rogers, Sr. He married Ola Burk August 12, 1940. She survives. Mr. Rogers moved to Homer in the early 1950s. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. He worked for Eaton's in Marshall as a tool and die maker for more than 30 years. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Marshall and was a minister at the church. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, William (Rhonda) Rogers of Homer and Dan (Carrol) Rogers of Rockford; two brothers, Raymond Rogers of Longs, South Carolina, and Vaughn Rogers of Coldwater; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Theo Rogers of Jackson. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14, 2001, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Interment was at Whig Center Cemetery in Butler Township.
Vivian A. Ditto Vivian A. Ditto, 80, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Trillium Hospital in Albion. Mrs. Ditto was born April 15, 1921, in VanWert, Ohio, to Donald and Jennie (Fitzwater) March. On June 29, 1941, she married Gerald Ditto, and he preceded her in death in 1992. For 20 years, Mrs. Ditto and her husband were the owners and operators of Ditto's Market in Allen. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and gardening. Survivors include two daughters, Opal (John) Riker of Litchfield and Lori (Dale) Coan of Allen; five sisters, Mary Hahn of Edgerton, Ohio, Helen Frusher of Findlay, Ohio, Gladys Reinhart of Wauseon, Ohio, Evelyn Baker of Defiance, Ohio, and Joyce Schilts of Paulding, Ohio; four brothers, Donald March of St. Mary's, Ohio, Paul March of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Richard March of Defiance, Ohio, and Gerald March of Continental, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and many step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother, a niece, a nephew, two stepsons and a stepdaughter. Funeral services were held Monday, July 16, 2001, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.
Beverly A. Yeck Beverly A. Yeck, 66, of Battle Creek, died Monday, July 9, 2001, in Battle Creek Health System. She was born May 13, 1935, in Battle Creek, to Henry and Luella (Eddy) Kiser and attended Battle Creek Central High School. Mrs. Yeck enjoyed sewing, quilt making, traveling and spending time with her family. Survivors include her husband, David Yeck; sons, Martin D. Hewitt of Charlotte, Robert L. and Clair L. Hewitt, both of Sunfield and William M. Hewitt of East Leroy; two daughters, Patti A. Brunke of Thornapple Lake and Sue A. Miller of Lehigh, Florida; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, William Kiser of Kansas City, Kansas; and two sisters, Frances Ice of Homer and Elizabeth Anderson of Marshall. Wilma Frances Gregg Wilma Frances Gregg, 81, of Homer, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Gregg was born March 9, 1920, in Tekonsha, to Frank J. and Myrtle (Wagner) Green. She married Milo "Mike" Gregg May 5, 1940, and he preceded her in death September 15, 1995. Mrs. Gregg graduated from Homer High School in the class of 1938. She was a homemaker, member of First Presbyterian Church, Mary Martha Circle, T.O.P.S. from 1950-1960, was an active leader in Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and was a charter member of Club "38" and Child Study Club. Her interests were wildlife watching, gardening and sewing. Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen A. Peters of Litchfield; a son, Russell (Nancy) Gregg of Marshall; two sisters, Anita "Pat" Smith of Litchfield and Charlene Rogers of Greenvalley, Arizona; a very dear friend, Susie Winnick of Homer; two grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by twin brothers, Everett and Eugene, and her stepmother, Pearl Green. A memorial service was held July 17, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Homer with the Rev. Charles E. Ray Charles E. Ray, 73, of Marshall, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital after being stricken at his home. Mr. Ray was born November 5, 1927, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Herbert G. and Addie (Kennard) Ray. On December 12, 1959, he married the former Ruth Rinehart. She survives. Mr. Ray lived in the Marshall area the majority of his life. He was a graduate of Marshall High School and received a BA from Morehead College in Kentucky. During the Korean War, Mr. Ray served in the United States Army. He had worked at Woodlin Metals Company in Marshall and Union Steel Products in Albion. He took an early disability retirement from Union Steel. He was a member of the Marshall United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports fan and kept statistics on all players. He was a history and geography buff and loved to read anything associated with people and locations. He especially enjoyed reading atlases. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ray is survived by a daughter, Sally Waite of Marshall; a son, Gary Uptgraft of Kalamazoo; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph Ray and Tom Ray, both of Litchfield and Sonny Ray of Ft. Paine, Alabama; three sisters, Margaret Stipetish of Greeley, Colorado, Mary Brockway of Homer, and Karen Nichols of Union City; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald Ray; and a sister, Roberta Griffith. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held today (Wednesday, July 25, 2001) at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Len Schoenherr officiating. Harry H. "Vic" Hudson Harry H. "Vic" Hudson, 62, of Coldwater, passed away Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater. Mr. Hudson was born October 10, 1936, to Harold and Pearl Hudson. He married Beverly A. Wolf August 7, 1966. She preceded him in death in 1992. He had been employed at Essex Wire in Hillsdale for many years, and was also a truck driver for North American Van Lines. He retired from Adapt Sheltered Workshop. Mr. Hudson served in the National Guard, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Litchfield, and he enjoyed Bible studies, construction work, camping, and the out-of-doors. He is survived by a daughter, Victoria (Joe) Hicks of Cold-water; a son, Shane Hudson of Battle Creek; three sisters, Bonnie, Rosemary and Lois, all of Howard City; a brother, Fred Hudson of Howard City; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Edith Hudson. Visitation will be today (Wednesday, July 25, 2001) from 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Gilbert M. Goldey, Jr. Gilbert M. Goldey, Jr., 67, of Litchfield, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Mr. Goldey was born April 11, 1934, in Lewisville, Indiana, to Gilbert and Ethel (McGeiger) Goldey Sr. on November 22, 1974, he married Annie Marshall and she survives. Mr. Goldey was employed at Coldwater Products. He enjoyed working and had also been employed at Elias Brothers Big Boy in Coldwater and McDonald's Restaurant in Tekonsha. In addition to his wife, survivors include five step-daughters, Loriann Lane of Tennessee, Tammie Mowrey of Litchfield, Loretta Reed of Coldwater, Rosetta Watkins of Litchfield, and Deborah Richhart of Quincy; four sisters, Rosetta Keeler of Kalamazoo, Linda Nightingale of Indiana, Bernita Hall of Florida, and Wynita Small of Florida; a brother, John Goldey of Coldwater; 23 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers. Graveside services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Mrs. Magrum was born January 12, 1922, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to Jeff and Pearlie (Combs) Frasure. Mrs. Magrum had been employed at the Holiday Inn in Albion, Lynn Farms in Homer and Alice's Donut Factory. She enjoyed gardening, bingo, cooking, watching TV and visiting with her family and friends. Survivors include nine daughters, Delois Smith of Kentucky, Birdie Howard of Ohio, Jean Combs of Albion, Wilma Patrick of Homer, Janice Goble of Albion, Marcella Kopp of Port Huron, Faye Smith of Jonesville, Gay Haywood of Albion and Wanda Zaremba of Albion; three sons, Glidden Wallen of Ohio, Carlos Wallen of Coldwater and Harlos Wallen of Albion; five step-children, John Magrum and Joseph Magrum of Florida, Patricia Pollman of Albion, Kathryn Murray and Michelle Patterson of Florida; two sisters, Dollie McKee of Ohio and Willadean Scott of Kentucky; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen E. Nowlin Helen E. Nowlin, 73, of Big Rapids and formerly of Homer, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Mecosta County General Hospital in Big Rapids after a long illness. Mrs. Nowlin was born November 20, 1927, in Albion, to Noah and Lenora (Sovern) Smith. She married Robert Nowlin December 12, 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1965. Mrs. Nowlin retired from Ferris State University in 1988. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline's and American Legion Post #98 of Big Rapids Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping, canoeing and bingo, where she made many friends who will miss her. Survivors include six children, Karol (John) Meacell of Homer; Philip (Mary) Nowlin of Big Rapids; Jim (Lea Anne) Nowlin of Homer; Kay (Dennis) Schrom of Big Rapids; Konnie Moore of Rodney, and David (Stacey) Nowlin of Big Rapids; a brother, Lynn (Betty) Smith of New Port Richey, Florida; a sister, Barbara Sirrine of Grand Rapids; a stepmother, Betty Smith of Grandville; long-time companion, Gerald "Radar" Thuerwachter of Big Rapids; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Nowlin was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Jeffery Lynn Robert Nowlin. Delbert (Terry) Ward Delbert (Terry) Ward, 59, of Homer, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at the Battle Creek Health Systems. Mr. Ward was born May 29, 1942, in Jackson, to Albert and Helen (Kelly) Ward. They preceded him in death. He was employed as a presser at a dry cleaner and enjoyed playing the organ. He was a member of the Albion Church of God and was an avid bingo player. Lewis F. Brenner Lewis F. Brenner, 75, of Homer Township, died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at W.A. Foote Memorial Hospital in Jackson. Mr. Brenner was born August 20, 1925, in Tekonsha, to William F. and Blanche C. (Miller) Brenner. He graduated in 1942 from Litchfield High School. Mr. Brenner was a lifelong area resident and farmer. He retired in 1988 from Southern Michigan State Prison where he worked as a corrections officer. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Lydia) Brown of Hudsonville; three sons, Judd Brenner (Cindy Hargis) of Homer, Christopher (Beth) Brenner of Litchfield and William Brenner of Belleville; two sisters, Anita Grace Frost of Elmira, New York, and Oletha Kleffner of Portland, Oregon; and five grandchildren, Jeremy and Jennifer Brenner and Charity, Philip and Judd Brown. Mildred A. Merritt Mildred A. Merritt, 89, of Litchfield and formerly of Albion, died at the Litchfield Nursing Centre Saturday, August 18, 2001. She was the daughter of George Albert Woltz and Iva Snyder. She married Edward W. Merritt June 2, 1934, in Hillsdale. He preceded her in death March 11, 1983. Survivors include two sons, Richard (Glenda) Merritt of Grand Ledge and Donald E. (Martha) Merritt of Homer, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Merritt was preceded in death by a sister, Goldie Osborn, and a brother, Glenn Woltz. Justin Bradley Justin Bradley, 15, of Coweta, Oklahoma, died Monday, August 20, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Justin was born August 20, 1986, in Detroit, to Heidi Nelligan and David Richardson. He attended school in Coweta and Jarmin and enjoyed flags, buses, outings to Wal-Mart and riding the carousel at Woodland Hills Mall. In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, Kenny and Scott; grandparents Denny and Ellie Nelligan; grandmother Iris Richardson; great-grandmother Opal Bender; and many uncles, aunts and cousins. Samuel L. Custer Samuel L. Custer, 81, of Coldwater, died Friday, September 14, 2001, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Custer was born November 16, 1919, in Olivet, to August and Hattie (Walters) Custer. He married Maudie Bradley July 30, 1939. She survives. Mr. Custer worked at Gale Manufacturing and Union Steel, both in Albion, and lived in the area most of his life. Mr. Custer was a member of the Golden Age Club and AARP. He enjoyed farming. In addition to his wife, Mr. Custer is survived by a daughter, Janice (Thomas) Childers of Coldwater; four sons, Kenneth (Mary) Custer of Mancelona, Larry (Lyn) Custer of Reno, Nevada, and Gary (Buena) Custer and Randy (Dorothy) Custer, of Wassila, Alaska; two sisters, Nellie Marks of Albion and Mabel Stone of Allen; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. John Raymond Pate, Jr. John Raymond Pate, Jr., 32, lifelong resident of Litchfield, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2001, at his home. Mr. Pate was born January 26, 1969, in Hillsdale County, to John and Mary (Moyer) Pate, Sr. Mr. Pate married LeAnn Spence in 1997. She survives. He was a 1987 graduate of Litchfield High School, and was employed at JLM Tank & Truck Services and DCA Kerry. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and the Michigan National Guard. He was a member of the Litchfield Fire Department. In addition to his wife, Mr. Pate is survived by his parents, John and Mary Pate, Sr. of Litchfield; four daughters, Cheyenne Pate and Sierra Pate, both of Hillsdale, and Whitney Pate and Faith Pate, both of Litchfield; and two sisters, Melinda (Dean) Watson of Litchfield and Lisa (Vince) Bozung of Holt. Evelyn V. Taylor Evelyn V. Taylor, 84, of Homer, died Monday, September 24, 2001, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Taylor was born August 21, 1917, in Story City, Iowa, to John and Ellen (Thorson) Hauge. She married Philip C. Taylor February 16, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death October 3, 1988. Mrs. Taylor had lived in the Homer area since 1941. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Homer, a member of the Mary Martha Club of that church, and was also secretary for the church for a number of years. She worked at Reichow-Mull Insurance Agency in Homer as a receptionist. She was also a homemaker and a member of the "38 Club." Mrs. Taylor is survived by a daughter, Mary (Tom) Bates of Homer; a son, Philip (Carol) Taylor of Fostoria, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Fran Taylor of Marshall; two sisters, Jeanette Johnson of Ankeny, Iowa and Jurine Hunter of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother, O.M. Hauge of Riverside, California; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by a son, Richard Taylor, and a sister, Eleanor Swenson. Duane R. Iles Duane R. Iles, 73, of Spring Arbor and former Litchfield area farmer, died Friday, September 21, 2001, at his home. Mr. Iles was born August 2, 1928, in Pulaski Township, to Richard and Eva (King) Iles. He married Mary Helen (Cecil) July 25, 1948, and she survives. For many years he belonged to the Litchfield Farmers Club and the Moose Lodge in Harrison. He had also served as the constable in Pulaski Township for 25 years. During winters, he enjoyed working at Tampa Bay Downs Racetrack. In addition to his wife, survivors include five daughters, Bonnie (Russ) Eason and Marlene (Gary) Wilcox of Concord, Libby (Jeff) Buchop of Hillsdale, Tracy (Tom) Engelsma of Marshall and Loretta Burgoyne of Jackson; a son, Edward (Mary Ann) Iles of Jackson; a sister, Dora Jean Grundeman of Oklahoma; a brother; Robert Iles of Harrison; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment followed in the Pulaski Cemetery. Daniel Jackson Roberts Daniel Jackson Roberts, 65, of Hampton, Georgia, and formerly of Calhoun County, died Sunday, September 16, 2001. Mr. Roberts was born June 13, 1936, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Millard and Thelma Ann (Thomas) Roberts. He married Minnie Patton and she survives. He lived in Georgia for a number of years and retired from A C Construction as an operating engineer. In addition to his wife, survivors include seven sons, Dwayne Roberts and Dennis Roberts, both of Hampton, Georgia, Donnie Roberts of McDonough, Georgia, Dale Roberts of Zebulon, Georgia, Ricky Stone of Homer, Danny Roberts and David Roberts, both of Houston, Texas; four daughters, Sandra Campbell of Hampton, Georgia, Doris Hayes of Luthersville, Georgia, Connie Gibson of Mason and Diane Roberts of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Sue Carr of Homer, Betty Brown of Ohio and Kay Johnson of Concord; two brothers, Jerry Roberts of Albion and Layne Roberts of Concord; 27 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Donna Jean Swope Donna Jean Swope, 64, of Homer, died Saturday, October 6, 2001, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Mrs. Swope was born November 30, 1936, in Albion, to Maurice and Jane (Hoffman) Dye. She married David Swope August 6, 1966. He survives. Mrs. Swope had been employed at the Homer pharmacy for 12 years. She enjoyed being with people. She loved bowling, wildlife, traveling, reading and her home. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Jean (Mike) Boulis of Homer; two sons, Steve (Babby) Sherman and Jeff (Carol) Sherman, both of Homer; a stepsister, Alona Belcher of Homer; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Elsie Dye. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 9, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Steve Shafe officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Homer Public Library or the Homer Area Community Foundation.
Helen V. Brockman Wendorf Helen V. Brockman Wendorf, 84, of Litchfield, died Saturday, October 6, 2001, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Wendorf was born May 13, 1917, in Gilchrist, to Athel and Mable (Parks) Barber. She married William Brockman May 15, 1935. He passed away in 1964. She married Warren A. Wendorf October 14, 1971. He passed away in 1973. Mrs. Wendorf lived in the area since 1965 and worked as a nurse's aide at Sheldon Hospital in Albion. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Homer and the Rebekah Lodge #134 in Litchfield. She enjoyed making crafts, crocheting, knitting and doing crossword puzzles. Survivors include two sons, Carl (Monya) Brockman of Battle Creek and Gene Brockman of Litchfield; two stepdaughters; four stepsons; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 9, at the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Burial was in Albion Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
Marie E. Kohne Marie E. Kohne, 90, of Homer, died Saturday, October 6, 2001, at Tendercare of Marshall. Mrs. Kohne was born October 28, 1910, in Toledo, Ohio, to John and Lottie (Winker) Bitter. She married Clarence Kohne, and the marriage ended in divorce. A private graveside service was held and burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Albion. Survivors include two sons, Edward P. (Virginia) Kohne of Battle Creek and Warren C. (Rachel) Kohne of Augusta, Georgia; a daughter, Pauline Hamill of Homer; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Clay Watkins The Rev. Clay Watkins, 77, of Litchfield, died October 9, 2001, at his residence. Rev. Watkins was born June 16, 1924, in Duco, Kentucky, to Benton and Rushie (Coldiron) Watkins. He married Helen Louise Singleton March 1, 1975, in Portage, Indiana. She survives. Rev. Watkins spent the majority of his life as a Baptist minister (47 years) and was a pastor at churches in Indiana and Michigan. He was also an Army veteran and served in the 14th Coast Artillery in 1943. Services were held October 12 at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Revs. Ollie Coldiron, Leonard Jackson, Charles J. Jones and Fred Alexander, Jr. officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens. In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Pam Watkins of Michigan City, Indiana, Clay (Chris) Watkins, Jr. of Chesterton, Indiana, and Mike (Charlie) Watkins of Otis, Indiana; three stepsons, Derrell (Bonnie) Lawless of Valparaiso, Indiana, Jeff (Julie) Lawless of Homer and Donald (Linda) Lawless of Litchfield; a sister, Alama Jean (Ollie) Coldiron; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. It was his wishes that the Veteran's Administration of Battle Creek be thanked for all the help he received. Malcolm O. Boughner Malcolm O. Boughner, 87, of Marshall, died Monday, October 8, 2001, at Tendercare in Marshall. Mr. Boughner was born April 7, 1914, to William W. and Arvilla (Osborn) Boughner in Mason County. He worked for the Freeport newspaper and Albion Recorder as a typesetter for several years before retiring in the late 1970s. He and his wife, Irene J. Casey, moved to Homer in the early 1950s, and then moved to Florida. She preceded him in death in 1987. Mr. Boughner enjoyed drawing art, gardening and yard work. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Selee of Marshall and Mrs. Leonard (Bridget) Quimby of Homer; three sons, James Boughner of Pensacola, Florida, William Boughner of Stockbridge, Georgia and Alan Boughner of North Carolina; a sister, Mrs. Chuck (Joyce) Mitchell of New Buffalo; a brother, Wesley Boughner of Illinois; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. Services were held at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Leo Harry Howard Leo Harry Howard, 80, of Homer, died October 9, 2001, at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek. Mr. Howard was born August 1, 1921, in Bedford, to Harry Leo and Elizabeth (Touscher) Howard. He married Josephine Mary Visciglia January 15, 1953, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She preceded him in death September 24, 1993. Mr. Howard was a US Navy WWII veteran and also served for the CCC Camp. He retired in 1983 as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan in Jackson. He was a member of Homer VFW Post #9411 and the Albion American Legion Post #55. He loved to fish. Survivors include a son, Patrick Howard of Homer; two sisters, Harriet Morgan of Battle Creek and Berneice Teachout of Union City; and a brother, Warren Howard of Burlington. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Edith Kenyon, Alice Howard, Evelyn Sizeland, Leola Measel and Eva Wendorf; and a brother, Leslie Howard. A graveside service took place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. Arrangements were handled by the Homer Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Bertha L. Yaudes Bertha Louise Yaudes, 88, of Homer, died Thursday, October 11, 2001, at Albion Manor Care Center. Ms. Yaudes was born in Horton on the family farm January 27, 1913, to Arthur B. and Clara Mae (Fowler) Howe. She was a lifelong resident of the Horton and Homer area and retired from State Farm Insurance after 22 years of service as a control clerk. She enjoyed knitting, crafts, ceramics and playing cards and bingo. Ms. Yaudes is survived by a daughter, Katherine Ann Tribby of Phoenix, Arizona; two grandchildren, Michelle Weinsoft of Austin, Texas, and Michael (Melissa) Klepper of Albion; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, J.R. Howe; a sister, Mary Evelyn Dryer; and a niece, Clara Fillmore. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Arrangements were handled by the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Lee W. Poynter Lee W. Poynter, 77, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Poynter was born October 16, 1924, in Bryan, Ohio, to Harold and Ruth (Miner) Poynter. He married Betty Hatfield on May 16, 1947. She survives. He was employed at Plymouth Flush Door and also was a farmer. During World War II, he earned a Purple Heart as a member of the Red Arrow Division in the Army. Mr. Poynter was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed bird watching and gardening. In addition to his wife, Mr. Poynter is survived by a daughter, Judith Lynn Hicks of Angola, Indiana; three sons, Lee Poynter, Jr. of Litchfield, Rick (JoAnn) Poynter of Coldwater, and Barry (Debbie) Poynter of Lusby, Massachusetts; a brother, Ted Poynter of Hillsdale; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stoney Lee Poynter. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 19, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Marietta A. Cornell Marietta A. Cornell, 69, of Homer, died Saturday, October 20, 2001, at her home, following a long fight with cancer. Mrs. Cornell was born August 25, 1932, in Eckford Township, to Stephen and Loveina (Schultz) Dowding. She married Wayne Cornell at her parents' home August 28, 1949. The Rev. Gordon Bacon of West Eckford Church performed the ceremony. Mrs. Cornell attended Mains Country School and graduated from Marshall High School. She and her husband spent their entire lives on R Drive South, Homer, except for winters in Donna, Texas, in recent years. She was a loving wife and mother, a partner in the family farm, a former 4-H leader, and enjoyed sewing. In addition to her husband, survivors include five sons, George Cornell, Ted (Rita) Cornell, Wayne Cornell and Chris Cornell, all of Homer, and Steve (Lynn) Cornell of Marshall; a sister, Carol (John) Kozicki of Tekonsha; 10 grandchildren; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son and a grandson. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at the J. Lynn Ellen Hill Lynn Ellen Hill, 59, of Litchfield, died Sunday, October 28, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Hill was born January 6, 1942, in Lansing, to Kenneth and Frances Ross. She married Roy Hill September 2, 1960. He survives. After graduating from high school, Mrs. Hill received her bachelor's degree at Spring Arbor College and her Master's degree from Western Michigan University. She was the assistant registrar at Spring Arbor University. She taught at Litchfield Community Schools for many years. She was an active member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church, and was also active in community theatre. In addition to her husband, survivors include her mother, Frances Ross of East Lansing; a daughter, Jennifer (Dave) Marino of Ypsilanti; a son Jason (Trish) Hill of St. Louis, Missouri; two brothers, Lee Ross of Santa Rosa, California, and Jerold Ross of Martin; and two grandchildren, Amanda Marino and Alexandra Hill. She was preceded in death by her father. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Sanford S. Ratliff Sanford S. Ratliff, 91, of Albion, died Monday, October 29, 2001, at Trillium Hospital in Albion. He was born October 1, 1910, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to James and Polly (Sutton) Ratliff. He married Sadie (Slusher) in May of 1934. She preceded him in death in 1993. Mr. Ratliff was a coal miner for 35 years, moving to Michigan in 1962. He also worked for Pickens Plating for seven years. He was a member of Southern United Baptist Church and United Mine Workers of America. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed walking, gardening and his grandchildren. Survivors include five daughters, Norma Jean (Eugene) Collins of Albion; Magdalene (Pondale) Petroff of Marshall; Jody (Virgil) Owens of Homer; Dorothy (Roger) Quada of Marshall and Melba (Gilbert) Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, David (Pam) Ratliff of Homer; three sisters, Cora Slone of Prestonberg, Kentucky, Dottie Neeley of Hueysville, Kentucky, and Maudie Hoover of Hippo, Kentucky; a brother, Joe Ratliff of Hueysville, Kentucky; 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. Robert C. Bills Robert C. Bills, 75, of Litchfield, died Sunday, November 3, 2001, at Laurells of Coldwater. Mr. Bills was born July 11, 1926, in Jackson, to Audley and Alice (Small) Bills. He married Jean Rentchler October 14, 1950, in Jonesville. She survives. Mr. Bills was employed as a set-up man at Tecumse Products for 40 years. He also worked part-time at Wolfinger Hardware in Litchfield. He was a member of the Litchfield Odd Fellows for 10 years and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mark Allen Pitts Mark Allen Pitts, 39, of Westminster, Colorado, died Friday, October 26, 2001, at his home. Mr. Pitts was born January 24, 1962, in Hillsdale, to Harold and Martha (Horn) Pitts. They survive. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1980. He furthered his education at Ferris State University and in Colorado. He married Karen A. Dodds in 1988. She survives. Mr. Pitts was employed at Rockwell International and was a technical supervisor for Duratck. His hobbies included golfing, camping, skiing, landscaping, computers, photography and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by two daughters, Genie (Todd) Connaghan of Federal Heights, Colorado, and Monique Weldon of Berthoud, Colorado; two grandsons, Bryce and Hunter Connaghan of Federal Heights; and many aunts and uncles. Blanche E. Stephens Blanche E. Stephens, 95, of Marshall, formerly of Albion and Homer, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at Tendercare of Marshall. She was born July 31, 1906, in Mansfield, Missouri, to Charles L. and Nora M. (Miller) Edwards. She married Stephen C. Stephens in 1937 in Ypsilanti. He preceded her in death in 1974. Mrs. Stephens came to the Albion area in 1912 and was a graduate of Washington Gardner High School. She worked for Michigan Bell as a clerk and was a private secretary for the director of the Lansing office for 15 years. She lived in Jackson from 1937-1993 and came to Homer in 1993. She was a member of the Homer Presbyterian Church and also the Jackson Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Jackson Presbyterian Women's Association. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Charlene) Brock of Providence, Rhode Island; a grandson, David Brock of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island; a granddaughter, Katie Brock of the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont; a brother, Robert C. Edwards of Homer; a sister, Charlotte Hepler of Hanover; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Good. Cecil J. Palmer Cecil J. Palmer, 77, formerly of Horton, died Saturday, November 17, 2001, at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Mr. Palmer was born August 16, 1924, in Vincennes, Indiana, to Cecil F. and Eva Mae (Richardson) Palmer. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II and belonged to American Legion Post #29 in Jackson. Mr. Palmer worked for Louds (Jackson Allstar Dairy) for 40 years and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed fishing, camping, ceramics and traveling. Survivors include his first wife, Ella Palmer, of Homer; two daughters, Sheryl (Jerry) Reynolds and Dawn Boulis, both of Litchfield; a son, Eugene (Sharon) Palmer of Clark Lake; a sister, Laveda (Ed) Stevens of Nevada; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherice; a son, Thomas; a sister Frieda; and a granddaughter. Beatrice Mae Curey Beatrice Mae Curey, 80, died Monday, November 19, 2001, at her home in Litchfield, under the loving care of her family and Hospice. Mrs. Curey was born June 12, 1921, in Jackson, to Harold R. and Mary P. (Campbell) Beck. She graduated from Napoleon High School in 1939. On February 23, 1946, at Ganson Street Baptist Church, she married Ransom M. Curey, of Litchfield, shortly after his return from military service in WWII. He survives. The couple often joked that they met at the state mental hospital in Ypsilanti, where they were both employed before the war. During the war, she worked at the Hayes Industries Defense Plant in Jackson. The Cureys raised five children on the family farm in Litchfield. Mrs. Curey, who drove a bus for Litchfield Community Schools for 18 years, had a talent for writing, sewing and painting. In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Sandra (Robert) Montgomery of Bath, Marcia (Ron) Schmidt of Socrgenloch, Germany, and Victoria (Phillip) Naegele of Delta Junction, Alaska; two sons, Ransom M. (Gabriela) Curey, Jr. of Woodburn, Indiana, and Dennis (Marcia) Curey of Litchfield; a sister, Mildred (Al) Corn of Jackson; a brother, Richard (Margaret) Beck of Ardmore, Alabama; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Beck, Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Swank; a half sister, Agnes Thurston; and a half brother, Ralph Lee. Joemaxine Wildt Joemaxine Wildt, 93, of Homer, died Friday, November 16, 2001, at her home. She was born November 13, 1908, in Sidney, Ohio, to Alonzo and Lillian Brandon. She married Earl Wildt in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1986. Mrs. Wildt was a homemaker most of her life. She was a former member of the Odd Fellows Auxiliary and enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing cards, spending winters in Florida, and her grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Mary) Wildt of Homer and Norman Wilson of Albion; a special friend, Marian Huckfelt; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. They survive, his father in LeRoy and his mother in Litchfield. He married Wilhemina Trombley in 1981. She survives in Jonesville. Mr. Norris was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Dr. Bartholic had a medical practice in Homer for nine years. After leaving Homer he was the medical director for the Michigan State Prison in Jackson. He also farmed in Pleasant Lake. He was a World War II veteran. Survivors include his children, JoAnn Wildt of Leesburg, Jon. F. Bartholic of Laingsburg, Cathie B. Apgar of Ocala, Florida, and Glenn H. Bartholic of Henderson, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, December 15, at the Homer United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Homer Area Community Foundation's Public Library Fund.

Robert F. Birchfield Robert F. Birchfield, 73, of Litchfield, died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at his home. He was born February 9, 1928, in Walkerton, Indiana, to Walker and Alka (Fraley) Birchfield. In 1955 he married Gloria Wilbur. She survives. Mr. Birchfield served in the U.S. Army. He retired from the former Albion Metal Products Company in 1979. He enjoyed fishing in Michigan rivers and the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Larry) Sanders of Litchfield and Linda (Paul) Dettenwanger of Independence, Missouri; two sons, Robert (Marilyn) Birchfield of Kansas City, Missouri, and Aaron Birchfield of Texas; three sisters, Catherine Woods of Homer, Lucy Dudek of Fayetteville, South Carolina, and Shirley (Fred) Dale of Pleasant Lake, Indiana; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Private funeral arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home of Litchfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lung Association.

Helen S. Kruse Helen S. Kruse, 90, of Lansing and formerly of Litchfield, died Friday, December 7, 2001, in Lansing. Mrs. Kruse was born February 18, 1911, in Lansing, to Franklin W. and Jennie (Pate) Rugg. She graduated from Lansing Public Schools and Lansing Business University. She married Ruehl W. Kruse June 14, 1930. They moved to Litchfield in 1953. She was a secretary at the Litchfield State Savings Bank for 10 years and was an active member of the Litchfield Congregational Church, where she served on various boards and committees. Mr. Kruse preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Kruse belonged to the Litchfield Sorosis Club, the Garden Club and the BPW. She was past Matron and life member of the Wenona Chapter #162 OES of Hillsdale. She was also past president of the Hillsdale County Association OES. She loved to travel and crochet. Survivors include two daughters, Jennie (Terry) Clark of Holt and Jean Jones of Ann Arbor; a son, John R. (Verna) Kruse of Three Rivers; a sister-in-law, Margaret Kruse of Manchester; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, two grandchildren and two brothers. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 11, at the Litchfield Congregational Church, with the Revs. Mike Murray and Clyde Wonders officiating. Internment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. The George White Funeral Home of Litchfield handled the funeral arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested to the church or the OES.
Dr. F.W. Bartholic Francis (Frank) Wolcott Bartholic, 93, of Leesburg, Florida, and formerly of Homer and Pleasant Lake, died Tuesday, November 20, 2001, in Leesburg. Dr. Bartholic was born June 29, 1908, in Wyandotte, to Frank and Catherine (Wolcott) Bartholic. He married Carol Haskins on May 16, 1931. She preceded him in death October 20, 1998. Dr. Bartholic was a graduate of the University of Michigan and received his medical degree from the University of Louisville. He had a medical practice in Homer from 1945 to 1954. After leaving Homer, he moved to Pleasant Lake where he farmed and was the medical director for the State Prison of Southern Michigan in Jackson. He served on the Homer School Board and Village Council, and was a member of the Homer Lions Club, the United Methodist Church and the Jackson County Medical Society. He was a W.W. II army veteran, serving from 1941 to 1946. Dr. Bartholic is survived by two daughters, JoAnn (Wayne) Wildt, of Pleasant Lake, and Cathie (Robert) Apgar, of Ocala, Florida; two sons, Jon F. Terry Lee Lawler Terry Lee Lawler, 45, of Homer, died Saturday, December 8, 2001, at his home. Mr. Lawler was born July 19, 1956, in Albion, to Henry and Alberta (Jackson) Lawler, Sr. He was a supervisor for Trojan Heat Treat for the past four years, and he was also employed at Yukon Industries and Michigan Bell Telephone. Mr. Lawler enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and other sports, as well as helping his family and others. Survivors include his father, Henry Lawler, Sr. of Albion; his stepmother, Hazel Lawler of Albion; three sons, Terrence Spratley of Albion, Terry Lawler II of Homer, and Anthony Luna of Homer; four sisters, Jammie (Marcdus) McKinney of Battle Creek, Henrietta Swain of Detroit, Patricia (Calvin) Lawler of Albion, and Janice (Allen) White of Albion; a brother, James Lawler of Albion; a stepbrother, Jimmy Joiner of Albion; a special friend, Sheila; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, two brothers and his fiancée Gloria Luna, who passed away nine years ago. Visitation will be Friday, December 14, from noon to 8 p.m., with the family hour at 7 p.m., at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 15, at noon, at Bethel Baptist Church in Albion, with the Rev. Fred Alexander officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Albion. Wesley B. Grant Wesley B. Grant, 90, of Mosherville, died Saturday, December 15, 2001, at his home. Mr. Grant was born December 10, 1911, in Lugerville, Wisconsin, to Frederick and Ruth (Cooper) Grant and graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1930. He married Harriet M. Pierce in 1936 and she survives. He retired from Clark Equipment Company in 1970 and enjoyed spending time out of doors, especially hunting, fishing and trapping. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Myrna (Walter) Rowe of Mosherville; a son, Donald (Dianne) Grant of East Tawas; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions are suggested to Great Lakes Hospice in Jackson. Arrangements were handled by George White Funeral Home of Litchfield.
