Mary Helen Hart Mary Helen Hart, 88, of Litchfield, died at her home Monday, December 27, 2010. Mrs. Hart was born September 25, 1922, in Homer, to Lowell R. and Elizabeth F. (Peters) Lambertson. She married Roland Dale Hart March 15, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1970. Mrs. Hart was the custodian at Litchfield Community Schools for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, accumulating cat collectables and spending time with her family. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Heckel and Shirley Cambell; and two brothers, Lowell and Donald Lambertson. Funeral services were held Friday, December 31, at the George White Funeral Home of Litchfield, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County.
Emily Lavonne Wheaton Emily Lavonne Wheaton, 62, of Sebring, Florida, and formerly of Homer and Albion, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010, in Auburndale, Florida. Mrs. Wheaton was born October 25, 1948, in Albion, to Joseph and Violla (Hunt) Collins. She married Richard A. Wheaton November 21, 1964, and he preceded her in death June 23, 2008. Mrs. Wheaton was a nurse at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall for several years. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop #156 in Homer, attended West Eckford Community Church and was in the choir. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion in Albion and enjoyed bingo, reading, writing and puzzle books. Survivors include two sons, Brian (Janet) Wheaton and Richard A. Wheaton, both of Sebring; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph (Jinny) Collins of Litchfield; and a sister, Sharon (Claude) Shepherd of Stoutsville, Ohio. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wheaton was preceded in death by a brother, David. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Tom Fox officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Albion. Edward Gale Leece Edward Gale Leece, 66, of Litchfield Township, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 6, 2011, in Hillsdale. Mr. Leece was born July 27, 1944, in Jackson, to Gale E. and Virginia (Berlin) Leece. He married Linda Shaw October 24, 1964. She survives. Mr. Leece was a 1962 graduate of Litchfield High School and had been a truck driver for Game Time and Jet Express. He was currently employed by R.G. Hawkes Trucking, Inc. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Litchfield. In addition to his wife, Mr. Leece is survived by two daughters, Laurie (Mike) Lehman of Butler, Indiana, and Theresa (Jeff) Freese of Fruitport; a son, Timothy (Rhonda Asher) Leece of Coldwater; his mother, Virginia Leece of Litchfield; a brother, Paul Leece of Litchfield; and four grandchildren, Jasmine, Ashleigh and McKenna Leece, and Vanessa Lehman. Funeral services were held Monday at the George White Funeral Home of Litchfield, with Pastor Brent Stille officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital the Litchfield First Baptist Church.
Paul G. Keifer Paul G. Keifer, 89, of Homer, died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Keifer was born August 9, 1921, in Wilshire, Ohio, to James and Wilma (Dalley) Keifer. He married Jean Marie Palmer, who preceded him in death in 1994. Mr. Keifer lived most of his life in Homer and owned and operated Keifer Welding, along with his father and brothers. He worked for Universal Vice & Tool in Jackson for 15 years. Mr. Keifer was a member of the Cook’s Prairie Baptist Church in Homer. Survivors include four sons, Stanley Studer and Galen (Marty) Keifer, both of Homer, Ricky Keifer of California and David Studer of Iron Mountain; four daughters, Sandra E. Leonard of Florida, Beverly Studer of Lansing, Rebecca French of Camden and Jane Tesch of Reading; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Frank Keifer of Hartford, Thomas Keifer of Homer and Marvin Keifer of Tekonsha. In addition to his wife, Mr. Keifer was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Studer. Funeral services were held Monday at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion, with Pastor Brian Walker officiating. Thermond John Hooey Thermond John Hooey, 77, of Litchfield, died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at his home. Mr. Hooey was born May 5, 1933, in Newton, New Jersey, to Lawrence and Viola (Kimble) Hooey. He married Barbara Maxwell June 5, 1955, and she survives in Litchfield. Mr. Hooey graduated from Newton High School in 1951. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was in Operation Castle on the Marshall Islands during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hooey was the chief lineman for the Jersey Central Power & Light Company for 37 years. For the past 10 years, he was employed at Wolfinger’s Hardware in Litchfield. Mr. Hooey was a member and past chief of the Andover Borough, New Jersey Fire Department, member of the New Jersey State Fire Chief Association and life member of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association. He served on the Andover Borough Council for 18 years and was a member of the Historical Society of Andover Borough. Mr. Hooey was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening, fishing and restoring tractors. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hooey is survived by three sons, Tim (Joanne) Hooey of Battle Creek, David (Janet) Hooey of Lake George, New York, and Patrick (Joanne) Hooey of Las Vegas; four grandchildren, Rachel Hooey of Lexington, Kentucky, Tara Hooey of Los Angeles, Sean Hooey of Cincinnati and Kevin Hooey of Lake George, New York; two step-grandchildren, John Lee Metcalf of Stanhope, New Jersey, and Amanda (Jason) Watson of Hawaii; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leatrice Hill and Jeanette Schultz; a brother, Thomas Hooey; and a niece, Luanne Stem. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Mark Case officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. Marilyn J. Douglas Marilyn J. Douglas, 81, of Homer, died Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at her home. Mrs. Douglas was born January 11, 1930, in Homer Township, to William and Zada (Cooper) Truax. She married Robert W. Douglas February 21, 1953, and he preceded her in death March 13, 2008. Mrs. Douglas was a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Homer, a life member of Eastern Star-Stella Chapter, president of Fire Belles, a member of M-99 Square Dance Club and was involved with Homer Caring and Sharing and delivery of Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Homer, where she was a deacon and involved in the choir and women’s circle. She loved to spend the winter in Lakeland, Florida. Survivors include two daughters, Deb (Dennis) Hartle of Homer and Annette (Joe) Collier of Albion; two sons, Scott (Carleen) Douglas of Homer and Michael (Tracy) Douglas of Belleville, Illinois; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Douglas was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service was held Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Homer, with the Rev. Tim Marvil officiating. Lillian Louise (Shaw) Phillips Lillian Louise (Shaw) Phillips, 85, of Jonesville, died Sunday, January 16, 2011, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. Mrs. Phillips was born September 22, 1925, in Howe, Indiana, to Wesley and Aria (Flint) Van Aken. She married Richard Shaw in 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1972. She married Donald Phillips July 6, 1974, and he survives. Mrs. Phillips graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1944. She retired from Vaco/Klein Tools and was a member of the Michigan Dynamometer Association. She had attended Pulaski Free Methodist Church and Community Bible Church and enjoyed horse pull competitions and spending time with her family and friends. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Phillips is survived by two daughters, Diana (Charles) Horn of Litchfield and Sandra (Mark) Dewey of Spring Hill, Tennessee; two sons, Sam Shaw (David Merritt) of Charleston, South Carolina, and Dan (Jean) Shaw of Homer; two stepdaughters, Naomi (John) Browning of Defiance, Ohio, and Kay (Leroy Law) Wonders of Las Vegas; two stepsons, Ivan (Jean) Phillips of West Unity, Ohio, and Roger (Myra) Phillips of Skwentna, Arkansas; two sisters, Geraldine Summer of Stockbridge, Georgia, and Sarah Van Aken of Hillsdale; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by a son, two grandsons, a sister and two brothers. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), at 11 a.m., at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Clyde Wonders and Pastor Jeff Kunkel officiating. Allan Douglas Dawson Allan Douglas Dawson, 66, of Litchfield, died Monday, January 17, 2011, at home. Mr. Dawson was born November 30, 1944, in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada, to Gordon Leroy and Annie Irene (Smith) Dawson. He married Carol Lynn Norton April 2, 1965, and she survives. Mr. Dawson was a farmer and the owner/operator of Dawson Builder’s Inc. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed reading westerns, hunting, fishing, woodworking and computers. In addition to his wife, Mr. Dawson is survived by three daughters, Kim Marie (Jim) Sholly of Concord, North Carolina, Kristin Lynn (Chad) Douglass of Pioneer, Ohio, and Kelly Ann (Bruce) Kelley of Hillsdale; two sisters, Elaine Patricia Carlson of Camden and Sandra Dianne (Bill) Wylie of Petoskey; a brother, Larry Leroy (Ruth) Dawson of Tupperville, Ontario, Canada; and five grandchildren. Richard “Eldred” Dobson, III Richard “Eldred” Dobson, III, 94, died Saturday, January 22, 2011, at his home in Allen. Mr. Dobson was born January 17, 1917, in Quincy, to Richard and Laura (Eldred) Dobson, II. He married Elizabeth Pengelly April 20, 1963, and she survives in Allen. Mr. Dobson graduated from Quincy High School in 1935. He worked at Calhoun Foundry in Homer and retired from Crotty Corporation in Quincy after 20 years of employment. He also farmed. Mr. Dobson was a member of the Allen United Methodist Church and the Litchfield Yesterday and Today Threshers Club. He enjoyed carpentry as well as antique automobiles and tractors. In addition to his wife, Mr. Dobson is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Dobson of St. Johns; a son, Richard Lon (Angie) Dobson of Hiram, Ohio; a stepdaughter-in-law, Joanne French of Coldwater; two stepsons, Robert (Beverly) French of Quincy and Philip French of Detroit; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson, James French. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home of Quincy. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow in Allen Cemetery. Josephine G. Purdy Josephine G. Purdy, 96, longtime Litchfield resident, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Country Living of Hillsdale. Mrs. Purdy was born September 28, 1914, to Hyman and Theda (Sackett) Adams. She married Clifford L. “Stub” Purdy March 24, 1940, and he preceded her in death in 2007. Mrs. Purdy graduated from Litchfield High School and attended the Litchfield Congregational Church. She and her husband started Purdy Tractor Sales in Litchfield in 1953, which is now Purdy Tractor & Equipment in Hillsdale. Survivors include a son, Douglas G. (Sandra) Purdy of Hillsdale; two grandchildren, Nick (Wendy) Purdy and Jean (Brad) Michael, both of Hillsdale; and four great-grandchildren, Brock and Alexis Michael, and Hannah and Alec Purdy, all of Hillsdale. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Purdy was preceded in death by a brother, Horace Adams. Dorotha B. Hergert Dorotha B. Hergert, 84, of Jonesville, died Friday, January 21, 2011, at Country Living of Hillsdale. Mrs. Hergert was born February 23, 1926, in Homer Township, to David and Martha (Miller) Larder. She married Orville Hergert May 14, 1949, and he preceded her in death in 2008. Mrs. Hergert had been a registered nurse. She retired from the Hillsdale Community Health Center O.B. Department after 35 years of service. She was a graduate of Homer High School and the Foote Memorial School of Nursing. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Lawrence) Barr of Jonesville and Brenda (Byron) Youtsey of Manitau Beach; two sons, Dwight (Tisha) Hergert of Jonesville and John Hergert of Galva, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Betty Randall of Homer and Helen Faulkner of Spring Arbor; and two brothers, Charles (Pat) Larder of Bellevue and Donald (Helen) Larder of Battle Creek. Virginia M. Leece Virginia M. Leece, 90, of Litchfield, died Sunday, January 30, 2011, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Mrs. Leece was born August 28, 1920, in Jackson, to Earl and Mabel (Burke) Berlin. She married Gale Leece in 1940 and he preceded her in death in 2000. Mrs. Leece graduated from East Jackson High School in 1938 and was employed at the former Wagner Industries in Reading. She was the activities director at the Litchfield Nursing Center. Mrs. Leece belonged to First Baptist Church in Litchfield and was a former member of the Hillsdale County Extension. She was a talented quilter and baker. Survivors include a son, Paul Leece of Litchfield; a daughter-in-law, Linda Leece of Litchfield; three grandchildren, Theresa (Jeff) Freese of Fruitport, Timothy Leece (Rhonda Asher) of Coldwater and Laurie (Mike) Lehman of Butler, Indiana; and four great-granddaughters. Delores A. “Dee” Pratt Delores A. “Dee” Pratt, 74, of Homer and formerly of Lansing, died Sunday, January 30, 2011. Mrs. Pratt was born June 17, 1936, in Lansing, to Michael and Lila (Redman) Joseph. Survivors include three sons, Terry (Dawn) Hazlewood, David (Valerie) Hazlewood and Timothy (April) Hazlewood; two stepsons, Greg (Kathy) Bannan and Andy Pratt; a stepdaughter, Liza Pratt; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Joseph and Michael Joseph; a sister, Jean Joseph; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pratt was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2010; and a son, Ricky Hazlewood. Funeral services were held Friday, February 4, at Barker-Leik Funeral Home in Mulliken, with the Rev. Marion Blair Marion June (Winchell) Blair, 95, died Monday, February 7, 2011, in her sleep. Mrs. Blair was born June 3, 1915, in Battle Creek, to Auburn and Muriel (Clark) Winchell. She married LD Blair June 25, 1957, in Jackson, and he preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Blair was the eldest of six brothers and sisters. She and LD raised their family in Homer. She was active as a Sunday school teacher in the Homer United Methodist Church and in the Calhoun County Extension Club. Mrs. Blair moved to Battle Creek in 1992 to live closer to her family, moving in with her daughter, Barbara Rapson. In addition to her daughter Barbara, Mrs. Blair is survived by a brother, Clark Winchell; three daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Chapman and Barbara Rapson, both of Battle Creek, and Lois (Raymond) Reynolds of Texas; four grandchildren, Paul Chapman, Lisa Morrow, Jana Groothuis and Robin Nichols; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Blair was preceded in death by a grandson, James Rapson; a brother, John Winchell; and three sisters, Rosaltha Lambert, Ruby Murphy and Ruth Baldwin. Melinda Kay Williams Melinda Kay Williams, 54, of Homer, died Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Williams was born April 9, 1956, to Roy and June (Smith) Childers of Knox, Indiana. She was raised by Alan and Mary Ellen Trump of Argos, Indiana. Mrs. Williams was an executive housekeeper for the hotel industry including Amerihost Inn and Comfort Inn. She enjoyed bowling, NASCAR, karaoke and spending time with her friends and family. Survivors include a daughter, Annette Collins of Albion; a stepdaughter, Nicole (Jason) Glascock of Odessa, Texas; two sons, Larry Collins of Carson City and Thomas Collins of Homer; a stepson, Troy Williams of Houston; four grandchildren, Michael Collins, Emily and Sara Glascock and Taylor Perkins; and a brother, Jeff Childers of Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; her mother, June; a sister, Elaine Weston; and a brother, Don Childers. Leighton O. Buck Leighton O. Buck, 90, of Homer and formerly of Freemont, Indiana, died Thursday, February 10, 2011, in Homer. Mr. Buck was born March 2, 1920, in Hopkins, to Otho and Mary Louise (Schlintz) Buck. He married Betty Jean Banker November 12, 1949, in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him in death May 2, 2002. Mr. Buck was a retired truck driver at Dana-Weatherhead in Angola and a World War II Army veteran. Survivors include two sons, Hubert A. (Connie) Buck of Homer and Ben Buck of Fremont, Indiana; three grandchildren, Hugh A. and Debra A. Buck of Fremont and Becky L. Buck of Gerrett, Indiana; and three great-grandchildren. James R. Court James R. Court, 81, of St. Augustine, Florida, died Monday, February 21, 2011, at his home. Mr. Court was born in Battle Creek and attended Homer Community Schools. He moved to Apopka, Florida, in 1982, and had resided in St. Augustine for 10 years. Mr. Court was a retired accountant and formerly owned and operated Discount Beverage in Apopka for 18 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Apopka and a member of Good News Church in St. Augustine. Survivors include his wife, June W. Court, of St. Augustine; two daughters, Jacqueline Court, of Sorrento, Florida, and Jill Court, of Apopka; a son, Jeff Court, of St. Augustine; and six grandchildren. Louis H. “Bill” O’Dell Louis H. “Bill” O’Dell, 89, of Homer, died Sunday, February 27, 2011, at Allegiance Health Systems in Jackson. Mr. O’Dell was born March 6, 1921, in Albion Township, to Ora and Alice (Fishell) O’Dell. He married Eva Averill October 1, 1940, and she preceded him in death October 2, 2009. Mr. O’Dell owned and operated the Homer Grill for 37 years and had a booth at the Albion Farmer’s Market for 26 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the 36th Division. Mr. O’Dell was a member of the V.F.W. Post of Homer and D.A.V. He enjoyed raising dogs, hunting, gardening, games of chance, canning and playing cards. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Harry) Griffiths of Litchfield; a son, Harold “Wayne” (Becki) O’Dell of Homer; a daughter-in-law, Delores “Jean” O’Dell of Litchfield; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Goldie Martin of Albion and Rena Snyder of Howard City; and a brother, Leslie O’Dell of Albion. Martin Pierson Van Norman Martin Pierson Van Norman, 79, of Shortsville, New York, died Monday. February 21, 2011. Mr. Van Norman was a longtime winter resident of River-view, Florida, and a proud Navy veteran. He retired from the Veterans Administration in 1991. Charles Junior Blonde Charles Junior Blonde, 84, longtime Litchfield-area resident, died Thursday, March 3, 2011, at his home. Mr. Blonde was born November 25, 1926, in Litchfield Township, to Gerald and Irene (Wilcox) Blonde. He married Doris Pratt October 19, 1945, and she survives. Mr. Blonde graduated from Litchfield High School in 1945. He was a farmer and truck driver and had worked for Addison Products and Simpson Stamping Company. Mr. Blonde was a member of the Hillsdale County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse and enjoyed fishing, tractor pulling and driving horses. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Blonde is survived by a daughter, Susan (Jamie) Campbell of Litchfield; four sons, Kenneth (Iris) Blonde of Jonesville, Keith (Linda) Blonde and Bruce (Sandra) Blonde, both of Litchfield, and Karl Blonde of Ashville, North Carolina; a sister, Joan Kahle of Portage; two brothers, Melvin “Gene” (Pat) Blonde of Allen and Robert Blonde of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marion “Tuffy” Blonde; and a grandson, Benjamin Blonde. Funeral services were held Monday at the Litchfield United Methodist Church. Aaron Keith Thorp Aaron Keith Thorp, 20, of Jonesville, died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mr. Thorp was born October 19, 1990, in Hillsdale, to Keith and Lisa (Rowe) Thorp. He graduated from Jonesville High School in 2009. Mr. Thorp was employed at Raker & Sons of Litchfield. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid bowler at L&J Lanes. He planned to play on Raker’s softball and volleyball teams. Mr. Thorp enjoyed snowboarding, baseball, soccer and golf. His greatest sports passion was basketball. He was a hunter and an enthusiast of cars, dirt bikes and ATVs. Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Allison (Brian) Stockford and Amber Thorp, both of Jonesville; a brother, Adam Thorp, of Jonesville; a nephew, Landon Stockford, of Jonesville; grandparents Robert and Ruth Rowe of Mosherville; and a grandmother, Roberta Thorp of Hillsdale. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Forest Thorp; and an aunt, Sherry Rumsey. Visitation is scheduled for today (Wednesday) from 5-9 p.m. at the Jonesville High School Gymnasium (use south entrance). Albert “Red” Sparks Albert “Red” Sparks, 71, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Mr. Sparks was born May 7, 1939, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Ben and Jane Prater. He married Betty Lou Shepherd November 26, 1960, and she survives. Mr. Sparks spent most of his working years as a commercial meat cutter, working at Don Moor’s Farm Fresh Meats for 25 years and owning a grocery store for 10 years. He also worked for Nagel Meats and several different factories in the area over the years. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, raising livestock and restoring old cars and trucks. In addition to his wife, Mr. Sparks is survived by his mother, who resides in Litchfield; two daughters, Dawn Sharrow and Beth Gilbert, both of Homer; a son, Timothy (Lauren) Sparks of Connecticut; seven grandchildren, Christopher Bently of Coldwater, Jessica Wood of Tekonsha, Megan (Tim) Brail of Portage, Rachel King of Homer, and Paige Sparks, Alexandria Sparks and Nicole (Tony) Pitter, all of Connecticut; eight great-grandchildren; six brothers, Abe (Betty) Prater of Litchfield; Erve (Sarah) Prater of Ohio, Adis (Jennie) Prater of Kentucky, Forrester (LuAnn) Prater of Fulton, Chet Prater of Bronson and Vern (LeeAnn) Prater of Sherwood; and three sisters, Mary (David) Doolittle of Tekonsha; Beulah (Billy) Sharp of Albion and Della (Ken) Dormer of Colon. Vercie Hunt Vercie Hunt, 76, of Homer, died Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Hunt was born May 19, 1934, in Pike County, Kentucky, to Eulon and Vancie (Justice) Bishop. She married Earl Hunt October 14, 1948, in Pikeville, Kentucky, and he preceded her in death September 19, 2006. Mrs. Hunt came to Michigan in 1968. She worked at Hoffman’s, which later became Aeroquip in Spring Arbor for 28 years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Marshall Church of Christ and enjoyed canning and vegetable and flower gardening. Mrs. Hunt is survived by a son, Craig (Rita) Hunt of Homer; two daughters, JoAnn (Dennis) Johnson of Jonesville and Rebecca (Mike) Tackett of Homer; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Mae Fuller and Ernestine Lester, both of Steele, Kentucky, and Linda Cantrell of Somerset, Kentucky; and a brother, Hubert Bishop of Big Rock, Virginia. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four daughters, Viola Damron, Connie Shaw, and Betty Jo and Jeannette Hunt; and four brothers, Raymond, Ray, Cleo and Herman Bishop. Jannie L. Smith Jannie L. Smith, 79, of Homer, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Smith was born March 7, 1932, in Branch County, to Orson and Ethel (Doolittle) Kempton. She married Dale E. Smith June 18, 1949, and he preceded her in death July 30, 2002. Mrs. Smith was the Clarendon Township Clerk for more than 20 years. She was valedictorian of Homer High School’s class of 1949. Mrs. Smith made cakes for many years for special occasions, sold Sarah Coventry jewelry and helped with the farming and seed business. She was a life member of First Baptist Church of Tekonsha, where she was a youth leader, choir director and deaconess. She was also with the Gideon’s Auxiliary Woman’s Association. Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Karen (Jerry) Owens of Coldwater; three sons, Wayne (Alice) Smith, Mark (Dee) Smith and Brent Smith, all of Homer; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Vernon (Alice) Kempton of Jonesville, Alvin (Shilley) Kempton of Tekonsha and Asa (Debi) Kempton of Marshall. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Kempton, and a sister, Alva Kempton. James Stephen Ballmer James Stephen Ballmer, 64, of Holland and formerly of Homer, died Friday, April 1, 2011. Mr. Ballmer was a member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church and a member of the Gideons. He retired from Johnson Controls in 2010 and previously worked at Nabisco. He loved boating and model trains. Survivors include his wife of three years, Kathryn; three sons, James (Marie Kuznicki) Ballmer Jr., Kevin (Krystal) Ballmer and Keith (Angie) Ballmer; two grandchildren, Violet and Jesse Ballmer; three brothers, Ray (Marci) Ballmer and John and Joe Ballmer; two sisters, Sue (Rick) Jewel and Joyce (Dan) Bomia; his mother-in-law, Donna Grisamore; and a sister-in-law, Karen Grisamore. Joyce Irene Stanley Joyce Irene Stanley, 67, of Homer, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Carelink of Jackson. Mrs. Stanley was born July 8, 1943, in Albion, to Marian and Charlotte (Slagle) Merica. She was married to George Orza Stanley, who preceded her in death in 2000. Mrs. Stanley was a lifelong resident of Homer. She was a quality control inspector for Amcast Automotive and then with Midwest Foundry and Addison Products. She enjoyed bingo and games of chance. Mrs. Stanley is survived by two daughters, Tina Stanley of Jackson and Sheila Gaines of Homer; three sons, Mark Gaines of Bryan, Ohio, and Charles “Ed” Gaines and Robert Gaines, both of Homer; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ballinger and Marjorie Robinson, both of Homer; and two brothers, Walt Merica of Litchfield and Bill Merica of Ohio. Morris “Bud” Hawley Morris “Bud” Hawley, 78, of Mosherville, died Monday, April 4, 2011, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Mr. Hawley was born October 27, 1932, in Bridgeport, Illinois, to Orla and Irene (Jones) Hawley. He married Shirley Harbaugh January 25, 1955, and she survives in Mosherville. Mr. Hawley retired from Lease Management in Mt. Pleasant in 1994, after 28 years of service. He was a member of the NRA and enjoyed fishing, hunting and working with guns. He was a good storyteller to his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hawley is survived by two daughters, Janet Tappenden of Mosherville and Sandy (Randy) McKean of Waterloo, Indiana; a son, Troy Hawley of Jonesville; a sister, Freda (Chuck) Tarr of Sumner, Illinois; a brother, Roy (Charlene) Hawley of Akron, Indiana; a daughter-in-law, Christine Hawley of Spanaway, Washington; seven grandchildren, Jason Hawley, Jeremy Hawley, Jestin Tappenden, Dustin Hawley, Drew Hawley, Reily McKean and Lakin Hawley; and four great-grandchildren. Clifford O’Dell Clifford O’Dell, 95, of Homer, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. O’Dell was born August 11, 1915, in Albion, to Ellery and Clara (Billinghurst) O’Dell. He married Beatrice Bushong May 13, 1942, and she preceded him in death in 1988. After many years of service, Mr. O’Dell retired from Decker Manufacturing as a machinist. He had also run Cliff’s Taxi and Delivery Service at one time. Mr. O’Dell also at one time ran the local bus station and a shooting gallery. As a young man, he built his own home starting from raw timber and tended to his large gardens which provided the family with most of their food. Mr. O’Dell enjoyed playing pool, trading commodities, fishing, and listening to dulcimer music. He was a member of Cook’ Prairie Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Reatha Richardson and Tisa O’Dell, both of Tekonsha; a daughter-in-law, Sandy O’Dell of Indiana; eight sons, Clifford O’Dell Jr. of Marshall, Jerry O’Dell of Homer, Ronnie (Ida) O’Dell of Melvin, Craig (Diane) O’Dell of San Antonio, Clarence (Cammie) O’Dell of Eaton Rapids, Robert (Vicki) O’Dell of Florida, Daniel (Mary) O’Dell of Tekonsha and Mathew O’Dell of Homer; 31 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. H. Dorothea Moquist H. Dorothea Moquist, 82, of Battle Creek, died Thursday, April 7, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Moquist was born November 13, 1928, in Gypsum, Ohio, to John and Wilhelmina (Voss) Jensen. She married Carl G. Moquist in Port Clinton, Ohio, June 5, 1952, and he preceded her in death May 3, 2009. Mrs. Moquist attained her bachelors degree in education and had been a fifth grade school teacher, teaching science and English in Toledo, Ohio, and in Homer. She retired in 1992, after 36 years of teaching. Mrs. Moquist was a former member of the Homer Presbyterian Church and was an Elder as well as being a member of the church choir. She was a member of the Maple United Methodist Church and its choir since 1995. Mrs. Moquist was an active member of the Church Women United, the Michigan Education Association and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. Being a lifelong Democrat, politics were very important to Mrs. Moquist. She was a member of the Voices for Peace and a genuine humanitarian, who was known as the “God bless you” lady. Mrs. Moquist gave thousands of trees to her students through the years for planting, was an avid reader and was a renowned and published poet. Survivors include a daughter, Joanie M. Moquist of Pennfield Township; a son, John M. Moquist of Battle Creek; and three grandchildren, Jennett Dyer, and Jason and Amber Moquist. She was proceeded in death by a brother, Fred Jensen. Charles R. Bennett Charles R. Bennett, 93, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, April 14, 2011, at Drews Place of Hillsdale. Mr. Bennett was born June 13, 1917, in Battle Creek, to Leroy and Millie Bennett. He was raised by his stepmother Anna Tyler. He married Geraldine Turrell in 1942, and she survives in Litchfield. Mr. Bennett was a farmer and drove a school bus for the Litchfield Community Schools for many years, as well as a milk route for the Litchfield Dairy Association. He was a charter member of the Litchfield Lions Club, and a member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church, the Litchfield Masonic Lodge F&AM, Farm Bureau and the Michigan Milk Producers Association. Mr. Bennett enjoyed playing golf, bicycling, camping, traveling and playing shuffleboard while spending the winter months in Bradenton, Florida. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bennett is survived by a daughter, Dawn (Jerry) Avery of Coldwater; two sons, Kenneth (Judith) Bennett of Battle Creek and Bradley (Deborah) Bennett of Litchfield; a stepbrother, Leroy Bennett of Rock Springs, Wyoming; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Nancy Patricia Troup Purdy Nancy Patricia Troup Purdy, 83, of Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, died Sunday, April 3, 2011, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Purdy had been married to Litchfield native Rowland J. Purdy for 58 years, and he survives in Ft. Belvoir. Mrs. Purdy was a retired business owner and home economist. She was a member of the Vienna Presbyterian Church. She and her husband spent the winter months in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, since 1981. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Purdy is survived by a daughter, Liz (Don) Porter of Alexandria, Virginia; grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha Porter; two sisters, Mary Anne Long and Elizabeth Rogers, both of South Carolina; a brother, Richard Troup of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Kitt R. McCone Kitt R. McCone, 57, of Chapel Hill, Tennessee, died Monday, April 18, 2011. Mr. McCone was born in Jackson to the late Clarence Junior and Ina Rose (Smith) McCone. Mr. McCone served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and was stationed in Germany. He was the owner of Kitt’s Service Company of Chapel Hill and a member of the West Eckford Church in Marshall. He attended Smyrna Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Paul Franklin Robinson Paul Franklin Robinson, 90, of Marshall, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at his daughter’s home. Mr. Robinson was born June 23, 1920, in Fremont, Indiana, to Edward Michael and Liva Grace (Corliss) Robinson. He married Glee Ellen Arnett May 30, 1943, in Branch County. She preceded him in death February 6, 2001. Mr. Robinson had been a resident of the Eckford Township area since 1948. He engaged in farming his entire life, first farming in the Coldwater and Quincy areas and then on the family farm in Eckford Township. Following his retirement, he continued to help operate the Robinson Farm. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Farm Bureau and was a former member of the Marshall Moose Lodge. He enjoyed participating in shuffleboard clubs, both in Battle Creek and in Florida. He enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets to visit with friends and to find a good bargain. Mr. Robinson, along with his wife, was a 50-year members of a neighborhood farm card club. The couple also had enjoyed more than 50 years of wintering in the Winter Haven, Florida area. Mr. Robinson is survived by three sons, Larry (Debbie) Robinson, Bing (Lucy) Robinson and Michael (Heidi) Robinson, all of Marshall; a daughter, the Rev. Carolyn (Don) Robinson-Fisher of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Gene Bosserd of Marshall. Mrs. Reagle was a lifetime resident of the Homer area and helped on the family farm. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1939. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Katherine (Franklin) Sayre of Pleasant Lake; two sons, Peter F. (Pamela) Reagle of Homer and John H. (Kim) Reagle of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Craig R. Wagoner Craig R. Wagoner, 58, of Albion, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Wagoner was born August 25, 1952, in Albion, to Russell and Christiana (Nass) Wagoner. He was a customer service representative for Clariant Corporation in Albion and a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Wagoner was a season ticket holder for University of Michigan football, a longtime member of the Albion Moose Lodge #406, and enjoyed golfing, bowling and spoiling his grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer (John) Mitchell of Battle Creek; two grandchildren, Melanie Greenman and Kaitlyn Mitchell, both of Battle Creek; two sisters, Dee (Fred) Heisler of Olivet and Sue (John) Dogan of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to Mr. Wagoner’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Moose traditional burial ritual was held Wednesday, April 27, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion. A memorial service was held Thursday at the funeral home. T. Jerry Linton T. Jerry Linton, 77, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at home. Mr. Linton was born April 18, 1934, in Albion. He graduated from Michigan State University and worked for the DuPont Company for nearly four decades before retiring in 1994 as an executive accounts manager for the Flouropolymer Resins Business. Mr. Linton and his wife settled in Wilmington, Delaware, where he enjoyed coaching his sons’ little league team and serving as president of the Diocesan Council of the Episcopal Church. After retiring, Mr. Linton relocated to Aiken, South Carolina, where he served on the boards of the Aiken Center for the Arts and the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons. He was an avid golfer, day sailor and fly fisherman, as well as a dedicated fan of the Eagles, Phillies and Spartans. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jody; two sons, Jeffrey and David; a daughter, Kimberley; and eight grandchildren. A private service for his family will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons (135 Lancaster Street, Aiken, SC 29201), the Church of the Good Shepherd (PO Box 32, Cashiers, NC 28717) or the Heart Fund (donate.americanheart.org). Herman L. Sylvester Herman L. Sylvester, 85, of Coldwater, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Mr. Sylvester was born March 27, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Harry and Sylvia (Prothero) Sylvester. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He lived in Riverside, California, and Detroit before moving to the Branch County area. Mr. Sylvester was a licensed mason in Michigan and California, where he worked as a bricklayer. He served his apprenticeship with Bryant & Ditwiller of Detroit and worked for Kanfer Construction in Oak Park. He also owned and operated a farm. Mr. Sylvester was a member of the Masons in Redford and enjoyed square dancing with the “Merry Mixers.” He loved antique cars and organized the Paradise Valley Model A Car Club. He was a skilled mechanic and worked on restoring old cars, including the restoration of his 1929 Ford Roadster. Survivors include a son, Samuel Sylvester of Coldwater; two daughters, Stacy (Steve) Jacques of New Hampshire and Cindy (John) Lee of Pontiac; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Jim Sylvester; three sisters, Ethel, Eva and Geraldine; and his former wife, Dorothy Sylvester. William Junior Loveless William Junior Loveless, 68, of Litchfield, died Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. Mr. Loveless was born August 23, 1942, in Albion, to Willie and Naomi (Chidster) Loveless. He married Sharon Pierce in 1962. She survives. Mr. Loveless worked at Brooks Foundry in Albion for 26 years and at Tenneco in Litchfield for 15 years. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. In addition to his wife, Mr. Loveless is survived by two daughters, Penny (Jim) DeBeau of Merrill and Darlene Loveless of Port Charlotte, Florida; a son, Cliff (Bridget) Loveless of Coldwater; his mother, Naomi Shultz of Litchfield; a brother, Charles DeWayne (Barbara) Loveless of Jackson; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Silas Patton Silas Patton, 64, of Homer, died Sunday, July 3, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Patton was born March 25, 1947, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Fred and Tilda (Workman) Patton. He married Christine Huff April 24, 1971. She survives. Mr. Patton was in janitorial in the Albion Public School system and the City of Albion Recreation Department. He belonged to a C.B. radio club. His handle was “Tree Trimmer.” He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and bicycling. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Christine Crystal Marie Patton of Homer; five sons, Paul, Fred, George, John and Troy Patton, all of Homer; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Goldie; and four brothers, Lacy, Grover, George and Paul Patton. Cremation has taken place. J. Richard L. DeForest Richard L. DeForest, 86, of Homer, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson. Mr. DeForest was born in 1924 in Albion to William and Nina Belle DeForest. He married Vivian I. Burns in 1944. She survives. Mr. DeForest was a life resident of the Homer-Albion area, where he farmed most of his life. He worked for Michigan Milk Producers for 16 years, then at Mac Steel in Jackson for 14 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Countryside Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Richard (Nora) DeForest of Illinois; three daughters, Ruth (Brian) Harrington of Brooklyn, Mary Lewis of Marshall and Connie (Paul) Hackworth of Homer; a sister, Marie Jones of Albion; 15 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Watkins in 1987; two brothers, Willis and Robert; and two sisters, Dorothy Teachout and Helen Hazlett. Shawn Michael Waring Shawn Michael Waring, 23, of Litchfield, died Saturday, July 16, 2011, in Fremont, Indiana. Mr. Waring was born June 23, 1988, in Albion. He worked at Michigan Automotive Compressor, Inc. in Parma and enjoyed riding motorcycles, dirt bikes, four-wheelers and snowboarding. Survivors include his parents, Norman and Sandie (Wildt) Waring of Litchfield; a son, Brayden Turnpaugh of Quincy; five sisters, Ashley Wildt of Waldron, Tiahna Waring of Litchfield, Kenisha Waring of Homer and Kaylee and Amanda Grimm, both of Stryker, Ohio; three brothers, Dylan and Nathan Grimm, both of Stryker, and Dakota Waring of Homer; three grandparents, Grammie Jean Grimm of Tucson, Arizona, Dan (Barb) Wildt of Litchfield and Russell (Julie) Waring of Homer; his great-grandmother, Ruth B. Weiman of Litchfield; his fiance, Emma Pelmear of Coldwater; four nephews, Tony Brown, Trevor Brown, Teagan Brown and Jeremiah Gary; and Jeff Grimm and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Leroy Grimm. Gerald Shaffer Gerald Shaffer, 91, a life-long resident of Homer, died Monday, July 18, 2011, at his home. Mr. Shaffer was born in 1919 to Thurman B. and Goldie Shaffer. He married Rose Mary Licking in 1948 and she survives. Mr. Shaffer was a farmer his entire life. He served on the Homer School Board for 17 years and was also a Homer Township supervisor for 12 years. He was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Shaffer is survived by two daughters, Jerri Lou (Terry) Crandall of Homer and Kally Sue (Mark) Walcott of Minneapolis; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 21, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion, with Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating. Rolene A. Blashfield Rolene A. Blashfield, of Tekonsha, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Branch County Community Health Center in Coldwater. She was born 1923 in Calhoun County to Homer and Emily Blashfield. Ms. Blashfield worked for a short time at the Battle Creek V.A. Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She spent most of her time working on the family farm. Ms. Blashfield was a life member of O.E.S. of Tekonsha and a member of the Church of God. She graduated from Homer High School in 1943. Survivors include two cousins, Lucille Arey of Union City and Boyd Blashfield of Coldwater; and friends and caregivers, Carol (Don) Combs, Kellee (Mark) Van Wormer, Kim (Brad) Ray, Mallory Ray and Nichole Ray, all of Tekonsha. She was preceded in death by her twin sister Arlene May. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 22, at the Church of God in Tekonsha, with minister Reed Waffle officiating. Mrs. Meacell was born December 2, 1947, to Robert and Helen Nowlin. Survivors include her husband, Martin J. Meacell; two daughters, Tammy (Larry) Johnson and Tonya (Bill) Wilson; a son, Martin J. Mary Louise Welch Mary Louise Welch, 90, of Novi and formerly of Litchfield and Milford, died Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Providence Park Hospital in Novi. Mrs. Welch was born March 6, 1921, in Pulaski, to Frank and Lillie (Berry) Miller. She married Don Welch December 17, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Welch graduated from Concord High School in 1938. She was a talented musician and played the organ for the Litchfield Congregational Church, many Litchfield High School graduation commencements and the Milford Methodist Church. She loved ballroom dancing and won many competitions. Survivors include a daughter, Linda (David) Reinhardt of Washington, Michigan; a son, Vern (Joyce) Welch of Reading; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Bettina Miller and Heidi Smyth, both of Walnut Creek, California. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by a brother, Rushford Miller. Edith L. Gatlin Edith L. Gatlin, 64, of Albion, died Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Gatlin was born in 1946 in Detroit to Raymond Frances and Helen Ramsey Southern. She married Howard Gene Gatlin March 28, 1970, and he preceded her in death November 2, 2000. Mrs. Gatlin worked as a telemarketer in Warren before moving to Albion where she was employed at the 115 Truck Stop and Big Boy as a prep cook. Vera Maxine (Mickey) Smith Vera Maxine (Mickey) Smith, 87, died Wednesday, August 3, 2011. Mrs. Smith was born October 11, 1923, in Yale, Illinois, to Edward and Vera (McCain) Perdieu. She married Jack C. Smith September 6, 1941, and the family moved to the Litchfield area in 1960. Her husband preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith had been residing at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility for several years. She had worked as a bank teller and enjoyed playing cards. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ray of Collinsville, Alabama, and Nancy (Tony) Burlew of Jonesville; two sons, Wayne Smith of Montrose and O.R. Spencer R. Frye Spencer R. Frye, of Homer, died Thursday, August 4, 2011, at his home. Mr. Frye was the son of Nancy Ann (Smith) and Don Martin Frye of Homer, and they survive. He attended Homer Schools. Mr. Frye worked as an auto salesman at Frahms in Albion and also worked at Hi-lex Corporation in Litchfield. He enjoyed music, karaoke, playing the guitar, reading, fishing and especially being with people. In addition to his parents, Mr. Frye is survived by a sister, Amanda Frye of Billings, Montana; a brother, Adam Frye of Homer; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his dog, Sadie. He married Judy Bostater in 1977. She survives. Mr. Kring enjoyed collecting tractors, coins and stamps. William Alan “Bill” Ladd William Alan “Bill” Ladd, 57, of Crossville, Tennessee, and formerly of Homer, died Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville. Mr. Ladd was born February 9, 1954, in Coldwater, to LeRoy and Edna Lois (Anderson) Ladd. He worked at Simpson Industries in Litchfield for 17 years. He then joined his son, Darcy, working in residential and commercial construction for 10 years. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Ladd also enjoyed singing karaoke and making fish bait. Survivors include a daughter, Daphne (Earnest) Begley of Crossville; a son, Darcy Ladd of Coldwater; three grandchildren, Erich and Emily Begley of Crossville and Andrew Ladd of Coldwater; and one great-grandchild, Erich Begley Jr. His parents preceded him in death. John A. Hoffman John A. Hoffman, 59, of Marshall, died Monday, August 22, 2011, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Mr. Hoffman was born in 1952 in Marshall to Julius W. and Virginia B. Hoffman. He married Janet M. Engle in 2011 and she survives. Mr. Hoffman was a commercial pilot for Continental Airlines since 1984 and was a former flight instructor. He also worked with Lake Central Aviation in Traverse City and Autodie in Grand Rapids. Mr. Hoffman was the president of the Calhoun County Progressive Sportsman Club and a member of the Progressive Farmer’s Club, Marshall Soaring Club and the Aircraft Owners’ & Pilots’ Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycles. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hoffman is survived by a daughter, Rachel Hoffman of Madison Heights; two stepdaughters, Mallory Lyon and Sidne Lyon, both of Kalamazoo; a stepson, Michael Lyon of Marshall; a sister, Suzanne (Bill) Burrows of Sebewaing; three brothers, Van Hoffman of Albion and Byron (Jill) Hoffman and Carl (Mary) Hoffman, both of Marshall; and his former wife, Amy Saizan. Mrs. Duke was born April 1, 1936, in St. Clair Shores, to George and Grace (Fatherby) Dew. She married Thomas V. “Sonny” Duke Jr. in 1955 in Clawson, and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Duke enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo and poker and making pottery. Donna Lee Hampton Donna Lee Hampton, 70, of Burlington and formerly of Homer, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Mrs. Hampton was born June 25, 1941, in Marshall, to Clifford E. and Dorotha L. (Maisner) Waisner. She spent most of her life in the Tekonsha/Union City area. Mrs. Hampton worked for the State of Michigan for 23 years as a resident care aide. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, watching her grandchildren play sports and going to the casinos. Rick Erwin Bentley Rick Erwin Bentley, 59, of Homer, died Sunday, August 28, 2011, at Lifespan Hospice in Battle Creek. Mr. Bentley was born December 13, 1951, in San Antonio, to Edmond and Ellen (Kheen) Bentley Sr. He married Rita Jean Miller June 2, 2000, and she survives. Mr. Bentley served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and was a former member of the Albion American Legion and VFW. He worked in the oil fields in his early years and later in the maintenance departments at Harvard Industries in Albion and Collins & Aikman in Marshall. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bentley is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Doug) Hazel of Coldwater and Angela (Kevin) Barnes of Bronson; two sons, William B. Miller of Homer and Owen (Rhonda) Licht of Quincy; his father of Albion; two sisters, Rhonda Garcia of Albion and Tina Gibbs of Homer; two brothers, Edmond Bentley, Jr., of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and Glen (Pam) Bentley of Liberal, Kansas; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special “granddaughter,” Jessica Cutler of Coldwater. Preceding him in death were his mother and a brother, Randy Bentley. A dinner was held in Mr. Bentley’s honor at the St. Joe Baptist Church Thursday. Neil L. Wright Neil L. Wright, 87, of Mosherville, died Sunday, August 28, 2011, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. Mr. Wright was born June 25, 1924, in Albion, to Eben and Mabel (Caulkins) Wright. He married Marilyn Joan “Mollie” Mosher September 15, 1946, and she preceded him in death in 2007. Mr. Wright graduated from Jonesville High School in 1942. He was an inspector and field representative for the Michigan Milk Producers Association for 47 years and had also worked for the Litchfield Dairy. Mr. Wright belonged to the Masonic Lodge and was a life member of the Mosherville Community Church. He was an avid fast-pitch softball player and was active in bowling, golfing and dancing. Mr. Wright was a devoted family man and attended all the sporting events for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Judy (Mike) Bills of Litchfield and Becky (Barry) Cooper of Reading; two sons, Craig (Pam) Wright of Mosherville and David (Chris) Wright of Jonesville; a stepmother-in-law, Dorothy Mosher of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Dennis James Curey Dennis James Curey, 59, of Litchfield, died Friday, September 2, 2011, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. Mr. Curey was born December 2, 1951, in Albion to Ransom and Beatrice Mae (Beck) Curey II. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1970 and had worked at Addison Products in Jonesville. He was a member and elder at South Litchfield Baptist Church. He married Marcia Miller June 20, 1988. She survives. In addition to his wife, survivors include, three daughters, Sarah (Eric) Holmes of Canton, Candy (Mike) Town of Jonesville and Nicole Carr of Coldwater; three sons, Joe (Angela) Carr of Concord, California, Shane Curey of Albion and Adam (Miranda) Curey of Fremont, Indiana; three sisters, Sandra Montgomery of East Lansing, Marcia (Ron) Schmidt of New Braunfel, Texas and Victoria (Phillip) Naegele of Alaska; a brother, Ransom M (Gabriela) Curey II of Woodburn, Indiana; his mother-in-law, Alice Miller, of Frontier; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild. Visitation is Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Litchfield. Robert F. Warner Robert F. Warner, of Homer, died Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at his home. Mr. Warner was born in 1942 in Battle Creek to Forrest and Jeanette Warner. He married Dorothy Yockey. She preceded him in death, and in 1996 he married Elaine M. Pohl. She survives. Mr. Warner served in the Navy during the Vietnam era. He worked for Hayes-Albion, Post Cereal in Battle Creek and was owner/operator of Homer Controls, Inc. with his son, David. He was a member of the Homer Lions Club, morning coffee club at Stagecoach and enjoyed hunting, fishing - especially Homer Lake - and riding his moped. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, David (Suzy) Warner of Homer; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Lisa Gustafson of Kalamazoo, and Peggy Butler and Tamra Bagwell, both of Homer; a stepson, Thomas Weller of Bronson and an aunt, Rebecca Michaelsen. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rebecca Lee, and his stepfather, John Hanna. Funeral services were held Friday, September 9, at J. Donna E. Bowser Donna E, Bowser of Homer, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice residence in Battle Creek. Mrs. Bowser was born in 1943 in Jackson to Ellis and Esther Brazee. She married Larry Bowser in 1963. He survives. Mrs. Bowser was the librarian at Homer Community Schools for more than 20 years. She also had worked at Mulls Agency, Cascarelli’s and City Bank and Trust. She was village president for two terms and was on the Election Board. She enjoyed her grandchildren’s activities, bridge, bunko, reading and going to the cabin in the Upper Peninsula. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bowser is survived by two daughters, Shari (Dennis) Butler of Tekonsha, and Cindi (Brent) Winchell, of Homer; seven grandchildren, Brock and Paige Winchell and Mitchell, Anthony, Kurtis, Kathleen and Brett Butler; two brothers, Harold Brazee of Texas and Gerald Brazee of Coldwater. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Ellen Wendorf; and stepfather, Vernon Wood. Funeral services were held Monday, September 12, at J. Mary Jane Waito Mary Jane Waito, of Albion, died Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Emerald Forest Assisted Living in Marshall. Mrs. Waito was born in 1922 in Quincy to Harry and Sarah Warson. She married Keith C. Waito in 1946, and he preceded her in death in 2008. Mrs. Waito worked at Weatherwax Drug Store as a clerk for several years before she became a homemaker. She enjoyed working at Red Cross blood drives. She also enjoyed yard work, walking and taking care of her family. Survivors include two sons, Ken (Janine) Waito and Kris (Linda) Waito, both of Albion; six grandchildren, K.P. (Cara) Waito, Melissa (Michael) Klepper, Lance (Kim) Waito, Rachelle (David) Gamble, Heather (Allan) Ruff and Erica Waito; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Waito was preceded in death by five brothers, Ken, Ron, Bill, Bob and Vic; and a sister, Chuddy Markovich. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, from 6-8 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. Dorothy Eliza Fogel Dorothy Eliza Fogel, 99, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at Country Living of Hillsdale Adult Foster Care Home. Mrs. Fogel was born December 24, 1911, in Butler Township, to George and Eunice (Crandall) Porcupile. She married Donald Fogel, and he preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Fogel graduated from Litchfield High School in 1929. She retired from the United States Postal Service in 1974. Prior to working for USPS, she worked at the Litchfield Telephone Company, the Litchfield Dairy, Harry’s Supermarket and the Litchfield Locker Plant. Mrs. Fogel was a member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret (Brad) Brown of Naples, Florida; two sons, Norman Fogel of Hillsdale and Eric (Teri) Fogel of Homer; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Fogel was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh and Marion Porcupile; a sister, Myrtle Crist; and many cousins. Detlef “Greg” Gregersen Jr. Detlef “Greg” Gregersen Jr., 84, of Dorr and formerly of Homer, died Monday, September 26, 2011, at Metro Health in Grand Rapids. Mr. Gregersen was born October 2, 1926, in Bono, Ohio, to Detlef and Catherine (Herman) Gregersen. He worked for Lynn Produce in Homer before moving to Dorr where he worked for DeBryan Produce until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Gregersen built the Dairy Delite ice cream shop in Homer and ran the business for 10 years. Survivors include his wife, Dolores; two daughters, Joann Ambler and Lois Hoaglin; a son, Brian (Karen) Gregersen; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Wesley E. Woodliff Wesley E. Woodliff, of Homer, died Friday, September 30, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Woodliff was born in 1937 in Hillsdale to Stuart and Veva Woodliff. He married Deanna Van Schoick in 1960, and she survives. Mr. Woodliff was a self-employed farmer, raising pure-bred Angus beef. He was a member of the Cattlemen’s Association and also Farm Bureau. He was a blood donor who hit his eight gallon mark. Mr. Woodliff enjoyed watching sports. He especially enjoyed helping his grandchildren prepare steers for the Calhoun County Fair. In addition to his wife, Mr. Woodliff is survived by a daughter, Rebecca (Nick) Willis of Homer; two sons, Gary (Susan) Woodliff and Glenn Woodliff, both of Homer; six grandchildren, Kathryn, Bryon, Bruce and Ezra Woodliff and Hayden and Devin Willis; and a sister, Nancy Putnam, of Homer. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Susan; a brother-in-law Ed Putnam; and a sister, Cleo. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at J. Mr. LaRoe was born June 21, 1949, in Detroit, to Robert G. and Barbara Jean (LaForge) LaRoe. He graduated from Homer High School in 1968. Mr. LaRoe liked cars, sports - especially football, and spending time with his grandchildren. She married Milford Combs in 1940, and he preceded her in death in 2009. Mrs. Combs worked as a bank teller for City Bank and Trust for more than 20 years. She was the Clarendon Township supervisor for several years and a member of Clarendon Methodist Church. She was an F.C.E. local member and was the county and state president. She served as treasurer for Fredonia Grange. Mrs. Combs enjoyed sewing and hooking rugs, and she especially enjoyed her cats. Survivors include three daughters, Gwendolyn Combs of Three Rivers, Denise (Gary) Thurow of Michigan Center and Doreen (Tique) Crespo of Battle Creek; a son, Milford “Bud” (Gloria) Combs of Homer; six grandchildren, Brian, Heather, Elizabeth, Christopher, Cameron and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Zane and Landon; and two nieces. Donald R. Staten Donald R. Staten, of Springport, died Monday, October 17, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Staten was born in 1938 to Benjamin and Sarah Staten in Williamson, West Virginia. He married Phyllis Tackett in 1982, and she survives. Mr. Staten was a foreman at Hayes Albion for 40 years. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Albion and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting and especially his family. Larry Dale Curry Larry Dale Curry, 74, of Effingham, Illinois, died Thursday, October 27, 2011, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Mr. Curry was born April 26, 1937, in Vandalia, Illinois, to Dale and Hilda (Rubin) Curry. He married Berta Lynn Smith January 22, 1957, and she preceded him in death March 9, 2011. Mr. Curry was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a mid-continent division superintendent with Exxon Corporation before his retirement. He was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church in Effingham, and has been a cross volunteer. Mr. Curry was a member of the Effingham RC Sport Flyers. Mrs. McAllister was born in 1945 in Albion to Robert and Katherine Wilson. She married Eric L. McAllister in 1963, and he survives. Mrs. McAllister was a resident of the Horton area most of her life, where she was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, handcrafts and television dramas. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McAllister is survived by a daughter, Kelly (Robert) Lever Knight of Pennsylvania; three sons, Eric McAllister of Alameda, California, Bill McAllister of Homer and Allen McAllister of Horton; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Beemer Weeks of Concord; and two brothers, Leonard (Mary) Wilson and Barry (Pat) Wilson, both of Albion. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Stuart; and a brother, Charles. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Saturday, November 19, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion, with the Rev. Joe Schoemaker officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Lilymae Ratliff Lilymae Ratliff, 59, of Homer, died Sunday, November 20, 2011, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. Mrs. Ratliff was born in 1952 in Martin, Kentucky, to John and Vicy Ward. She married Demmodell Ratliff in 1970, and he preceded her in death in 2010. Mrs. Ratliff moved to Michigan in 1962 and she lived in the Springport and Homer areas. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her beloved family very much. She also worked at Corning Glass for a number of years. Mrs. Ratliff is survived by two sons, Dusty (Michelle) Ratliff of Litchfield and John (Linda) Ratliff of Homer; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ratliff was preceded in death by two sisters, Johnnabe Mose and Rebecca Horrel; and a son, Demmodell Ratliff, Jr. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grace Freewill Baptist Church, 16680 East Michigan Avenue in Albion. Rebecca J. “Becky” Klingaman Rebecca J. “Becky” Klingaman, 80, of Homer, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at Verona Adult Foster Care in Marshall. Mrs. Klingaman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1931 to Marshall and Nina Rector. She married Milford “Shorty” Hoaglin, who preceded her in death in 2002. She married Keith Klingaman following the death of her first husband, and he survives. Mrs. Klingaman had her own beauty shop in Homer for many years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Tekonsha #324 Eastern Star. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Klingaman is survived by three daughters, Beverly Swope of Marshall, Marilyn (Lonnie) McCone of Homer and Janice Hoaglin of San Francisco; two sons, Gene (Beverly) Hoaglin of Homer and Charles Hoaglin of Marshall; three stepdaughters, Lois (Earl) Barnes of Monroe, Pam Klingaman of Wixon and Judy (Jim) Peters of Grand Rapids; a stepson, John (Sheila) Klingaman of Marshall; 12 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jacqueline Johnson of Lexington, Ohio, and Betty Jane Rector of Lakeside, Arizona. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 4, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion, with Pastor John King officiating. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Robert Keeney Robert Keeney, 78, of Litchfield, died Thursday, December 1, 2011, at home. Mr. Keeney was born July 24, 1933, in Ann Arbor, to Theodore and Opal Mae (Keeney) Kaluz. He married Dariel Jennett Angell February 21, 1969, and she survives. Mr. Keeney served in the U.S. Marines from 1957-1962. He was employed as a plant manager and quality engineer at several facilities, working at Ford Motor Company for 15 years and also at General Electric. He was also a member of the Litchfield City Council for several years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Keeney is survived by three daughters, Molly (Jay) Tredwell of Franklin, Heidi Ligget of Warren and Lesley (Mike) Smith of Hillsdale; two sons, Robert Patrick Keeney of New Hampshire and Carleton (Tina) Keeney of Hillsdale; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Keeney. A memorial visitation was held Sunday at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Litchfield. Sid Curey Sid Curey, 54, of Litchfield, died Sunday, December 11, 2011, at home. Mr. Curey was born in Albion April 23, 1957, to Richard and Mary Lou (Bilton) Curey. He was a 1975 graduate of Litchfield High School. Mr. Curey had worked as a paver for an asphalt company and enjoyed NASCAR racing and his cat. Survivors include his father and stepmother Richard and Pauline Curey; and two brothers, Stephen (Connie) Curey and Stan (Laura) Curey. He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Scott Curey. Private interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. James Franklin “Jim” Cardinal James Franklin “Jim” Cardinal, 61, of Butler Township, died Monday, December 12, 2011, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. Mr. Cardinal was born May 8, 1950, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He married Carla Hart August 30, 1968, and she survives. Mr. Cardinal was the owner/operator of Cardinal Welding and had previously worked at Legends Manufacturing, Inc. in Jackson. He enjoyed four-wheeling. In addition to his wife, Mr. Cardinal is survived by three daughters, Tricia (Tim) Masarik of Litchfield, Jamie (Joe) Mueller of Hillsdale and Shannon (Bryan) Johns of Clinton; four grandchildren, Katelyn and Cameron Johns, and Mitchell and Macy Mueller; and a brother, Jack (Betty) Cardinal of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Jean Stroh, and a son, Joshua. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Litchfield, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.
