Joyce K. Butters
Joyce K. Butters, 67, of Homer, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at Life Span Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek.
She was born March 15, 1941, in Albion, to Paul Frederick and Lilly E. (Frank) Weishar, Sr.
Ms. Butters was a teacher’s aide at Homer Schools for 34 years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a Senior Center Red Hatter. She sold Avon, was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Campfire leader and was involved with Relay for Life.
She enjoyed painting, shopping, knitting, camping and traveling with family and friends. Ms. Butters especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Laura Burns of Marshall; two sons, Frederick Butters (Anne Mead) of Southfield and David (Kim) Butters of Homer; a sister, Imogene Sattler of Concord; a brother, Paul (Bonnie) Weishar, Jr. of Holt; three grandchildren, Dalton Burns and Lilly and Lane Butters; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Albion, with Pastor Gary Nehring officiating. Burial was to follow at Albion Memory Gardens.
J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, in Albion handled the arrangements.

Joyce Mae Anderson Rutz
Joyce Mae Anderson Rutz, 75, of Albion, died Saturday, January 3, 2009, at her residence.
Mrs. Rutz was born October 14, 1933, in Lansing, to Emerson Gross and Beatrice (Bergh) Sweet.
She moved to Okemos at age 10, graduated from Okemos High School and attended Michigan State University.
She married Roger Anderson in 1952, and later married L.J. Rutz in April of 1980 in Albion. He survives.
Mrs. Rutz was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Albion and served on the Vestry and the Episcopal Church Women. She worked at Albion College for 32 years, 27 of which were in the history department, retiring in 2001.
In 1993 she received a liver transplant and was active in the corresponding organizations. She loved spending time with her family, gardening and favorite dogs.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Rutz is survived by a daughter, Lynn K. (Delano) Kreger of Homer; a son, Christopher (Cyndi) Anderson of Albion; a stepson, Jay L. (Becky) Rutz of Little Rock, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Allison and Shawn Anderson and Brooke Rutz; a sister, Kay (Don) Volz of Thousand Oaks, California; and a brother, John (Sherry) Sweet of Dimondale.
She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Beth Rutz.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, January 7, at the Erie Street Chapel of the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Fr. Edward Scully officiating. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place, with burial of cremains to be in Campbell Cemetery.

Arthur R. Brink
Arthur R. Brink, 70, of Homer, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mr. Brink was born May 15, 1938, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, to James and Ella (Ritter) Brink. He married Bonnie C. Shanefelter in November 1960. She preceded him in death August 2, 2003.
Mr. Brink was self-employed as a farmer for more than 30 years. He was a member of Homer United Methodist Church. He loved the outdoors, fiddling with tractors, gardening, target shooting, helping youth groups and the Amish. He also raised foster children.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Brink and Denise (Randy) Richards, both of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two stepdaughters, Darlene Aytes of Lansing, Tennessee, and Linda Strickland of Wyandotte; three stepsons, John Brink of Muncie, Indiana, and William and Charles Coburn, both of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Georgette Carter, Nancy Bucci and Joy Brink, all of Uniontown; two brothers, Rusty and Danny Brink, both of Uniontown; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Brinks was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 9, at Homer United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating.
Interment followed at Fisher Cemetery in Homer.
Funeral arrangements were handled by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the United Methodist Church youth group.

Sharron G. Franklin
Sharron G. Franklin, 56, of Litchfield, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at her residence.
Ms. Franklin was born March 26, 1952, in Polar Bluff, Missouri, to J.R. and Bertha (Whaley) Collins. She was raised in the Coloma area and moved to this area about three years ago.
Ms. Franklin held a position of cashier. She worked for Lowe’s in Benton Harbor, Jackson and Portage. She worked for 13 years at Chardon Rubber in St. Joseph.
She was a member of Matee Indian tribe, and enjoyed Native American crafts, camping, fishing and sitting by moving waters. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Tasha Fairbanks of Litchfield, Belinda (Michael) Knight of Homer and Sharon (Scott) Lucas of Jonesville; a son, David Fairbanks of Benton Harbor; two sisters, Shirley Warner and Sheila Smart, both of Coloma; three brothers, Paul “Gene” Mathis of Schoolcraft, and twins Larry Collins of Stevensville and and Dennis Collins of Coloma; and 11 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Mathis; a niece, Shelly; and a nephew, Kyle.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 1-3 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Allan “Big Al” Boughner
Allan “Big Al” Boughner, 64, of Mount Airy, North Carolina, and formerly of Homer, died November 29, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
Mr. Boughner was born April 9, 1944, in Bad Axe to Malcomb and Irene (Casey) Boughner. He grew up in Homer and lived there until 1982.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Judy (Thurston) Boughner of Mount Airy; a daughter Kim Wilbur (David) Brown of New Bedford, Massachusetts; a granddaughter, Taylor Wilbur; two sisters, Bridget Quimby and Mary Ann (Jim) Selee; two brothers, Bill (Miranda) Boughner and Jim (Sue) Boughner; a mother-in-law, Thelma Keyes; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted December 3, at Temple Baptist Church, with the Rev. Zane Fishel officiating. (w/photo)

Lawrence W. Dunn
Lawrence W. Dunn, 91, of Homer, died Monday, January 12, 2009, at Allegiance Health Systems in Jackson.
He was born March 12, 1917, in Parma Township, to Wellington and Ruth (Peckham) Dunn. He married Frieda M. Knack August 17, 1941, in Albion, and she preceded him in death August 13, 1978.
Mr. Dunn was self-employed as a farmer for most of his life. He drove truck for several area businesses and was also a licensed electrician. He was a member of the Marshall Moose, Albion Elks Lodge #1798, the Farm Bureau and the Teamsters Retiree’s Club. He enjoyed helping others, hunting and the outdoors.
Mr. Dunn is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Wesley) Harris of Homer, and a granddaughter, Karen Harris of North Syracuse, New York.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harvey F., Lester H. and W. Milford Dunn; and a sister Elvis Haeske.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, January 20, at Riverside Cemetery in Albion, with Rev. Carlean Swam officiating.
The Finley Drive Chapel of the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion handled the arrangements.

Michael A. Romanowski
Michael A. Romanowski Jr., 80, of Marshall, died Saturday, December 27, 2008, at Tendercare in Marshall.
Mr. Romanowski was born April 17, 1928, in Albion, to Michael A. and Alexandria (Salwsky) Romanowski Sr. He married “Patricia” Johanne Beattie November 14, 1964, in Angola, Indiana. She survives in Marshall.
He was a life-long resident of Calhoun County, working and owning businesses as a pattern maker in Albion, Homer and Marshall.
He was active with the village government of Homer for many years. He used his pattern making talents to contribute to public projects such as the Lotus Flower fountain in Monroe and the wrought iron benches that formerly lined the streets of downtown Marshall.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Carla Austin of Jackson; a son, Steven Romanowski of Marshall; a stepson, Michael McCullough of Virginia; four grandchildren, Scott Austin, Laurie Kline, Amy Romanowski and Curt McCullough; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by; his first wife, Phyllis (Konkle); a brother, William Romanowski; three sisters, Sophia Horosko, Clara Holtz and Helen Pietkiewicz; four stepbrothers and sisters; and a daughter-in- law, Judy Romanowski.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date in Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
Memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Susie E. Yoder
Susie E. Yoder, 70, of Homer Township, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at home.
Mrs. Yoder was born April 2, 1938, in Lagrange, Indiana, to Leo and Mima (Miller) Yoder.
She married Melvin Yoder November 1, 1956, and he survives.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Yoder is survived by three daughters, Irene (Nelson) Miller of Lewisburg, Kentucky, Carolyn (Nelson) Miller of Litchfield and LeEtta (David) Schmucker of Homer; two sons, Floyd (Darlene) Yoder of Millroy, Indiana, and Richard (Ruby) Yoder of Greensburg, Indiana; four sisters, Katie Irene (Joe) Miller of Lagrange, Indiana, Edna (Aaron) Beechy of Wautoma, Wisconsin, Mary Ellen (Marvin) Yoder of Shipshewana, Indiana, and Alta Marie (Ervin) Miller of Lagrange; a brother, John Jay (Katie Marie) Yoder of Lagrange; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Yoder was preceded in death by three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the Vernon Coblentz Jr. residence. Bishop Vernon Coblentz officiated, and burial was in the Amish Cemetery in Homer.

Carol Jean Geer
Carol Jean Geer, 77, of Tekonsha, died Friday, January 23, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mrs. Geer was born April 22, 1931, in Homer, to Leon H. and Madeline B. (Arey) Warner.
She grew up and attended school in Homer, graduating in 1949.
She married Vernon W. Geer March 25, 1951, in Bellevue. He survives.
Mrs. Geer worked as an inspector for Corning Glass in Albion for 15 years and at Riverside Manufacturing in Coldwater for five years. She also sold real estate for United Farm Realty, and worked for Wagner Industries in Reading. She lived in the Tekonsha area all her adult life.
She was an outdoors person. She loved flowers, gardening, traveling and anything to do with Christmas. She had taken a special class on how to be a clown. The most important thing in her life was her family. She was a member of St. Joe Baptist Church and the Red Hat Society in the Tekonsha area.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Geer is survived by a son, Wayne (Sally) Geer of Coldwater; three daughters, Kolleen Geer of Homer Township, Loretta (Bradley) Fuller of Quincy and Betty Geer of Tekonsha; a brother, James D. (Kay) Warner of Tekonsha; a sister, Delores Annette Rumsey of Quincy; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Warner and Shirley Geer; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Warner, and a brother, Gerald Leon Warner.
Visitation was held Tuesday, January 27, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at Putnam Funeral Home in Tekonsha. The funeral will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m., with Pastors Angel Rojas and Lee Winters officiating.
Interment will follow at St. Joe Cemetery in Clarendon Township.

Opal Mae Riker
Opal Mae Riker, 61, of Litchfield, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Mrs. Riker was born February 13, 1947, in Van Wert, Ohio, to Gerald and Vivian (March) Ditto.
She married John Riker, February 12, 1965, and he survives.
Mrs. Riker graduated from Litchfield High School in 1965. She was a dedicated homemaker. She loved canning, crocheting, handcrafts and corresponding with her numerous pen pals. Mrs. Riker will be remembered by many area children as a wonderful babysitter.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Riker is survived by three daughters, Teala (Robert) Stem of Osseo and Misty Riker and Rebecka (Phil) Music, both of Litchfield; a son, John Paul (Katrina) Riker of Litchfield; a sister, Lori (Dale) Cowan of Allen; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a half-sister and two half-brothers.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 30, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating.
Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Helen Ruth Mayo
Helen Ruth Mayo, 85, of Litchfield, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living Center.
Mrs. Mayo was born April 5, 1923, in Adrian, to William R. and Mildred (Torrey) Green. She married Bertrand Mayo November 10, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1971.
Mrs. Mayo attended Litchfield schools, the University of Grand Rapids and the University of Michigan. She worked as a pharmacist and was a member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing.
Survivors include a brother, Homer Green, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Green.
Funeral services will be at a later date.

Shirley Jean Culver
Shirley Jean Culver, 73, of Albion, died Sunday, February 1, 2009, at Tendercare of Albion.
Mrs. Culver was born June 12, 1935, in Albion, to Michael and Dorothy (Hale) Kellogg. She married Robert Culver. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Culver moved back to Albion in 2003 from Litchfield. She was a homemaker and an avid rock collector, especially agates.
Survivors include a son, Robert (Cindy) Culver II of Albion; three grandchildren, Helen Culver, Shawn Rowley and Shannon Knight; four great-grandchildren, Sean Rowley, Melinda Severance and Ariel and Jayson Knight; and an uncle, Robert Hale of Woodbine, Georgia.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Charleen Kellogg, and a brother, Dale Kellogg.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held later.
Arrangements were handled by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.

Thelma June Carver
Thelma June Carver, 92, of Albion, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Tendercare of Marshall.
Mrs. Carver was born April 6, 1916, in Clarendon Township, to Meredith and Mida (Wheeler) White. She married Milton Joseph Carver in Leslie March 30, 1942, and he preceded her in death January 13, 1993.
Mrs. Carver was a 1936 graduate of Homer High School. She moved to Albion in 1942. She was a nurses aide at Sheldon Hospital and Albion Manor Care Center. She also worked at Service Caster and was a homemaker. Mrs. Carver was a member of the St. John Catholic Church, Women of the Moose #202 of Marshall and Parent Support Group of the Albion A.R.C.
She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, reading, traveling and the outdoors.
Mrs. Carver is survived by a son, Thomas (Dorothy) Carver of Albion; three grandchildren, Cindy, Sarah and Mark Carver; a great-grandson, Jeremy Carver; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Carver was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; a daughter, Nancy; four sisters, Marjorie White, Hazel Wilcox, Bernice Vandenburgh and Gula Estelle; and five brothers, Floyd, Donald, Kenneth, Carl and Russell.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Erie Street Chapel of J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, in Albion, with a scripture service at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Father Carl Peltz officiating.
Burial will be at West Clarendon Cemetery, Clarendon Township.

James A. Leggitt
James A. Leggitt, 57, of Homer, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Leggitt was born March 10, 1951, in Battle Creek, to James Alfred and Irene (Aliston) Leggitt. He married Katrina Snellenberger August 13, 1988, and she survives.
He owned and operated Homer Radiator in Homer since 1986, and previously owned J&J and Sons Welding in Athens. He also had a dairy farm in Athens. Mr. Leggitt served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the V.F.W. and Masonic Lodge in Athens.
He also was a member of the Wednesday Night Golf League at Whiffletree Golf Course in Concord, and enjoyed golfing, cutting wood, being outdoors and playing with his toys. He especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Leggitt is survived by three daughters, Kimberly (Chris) Laird and Tonya (Robert) Rhinard, both of Homer, and Kelly Leggitt of Battle Creek; four sons, Jimmy (Terry) Leggitt of Battle Creek, Kenneth Leggitt of North Carolina, and Jimbo (Courtney) Jones and Curt Rogers, both of Homer; his mother, Irene Leggitt of Athens; two sisters, Linda (Fred) Farley of northern Michigan and Ardith (John) Smith of Athens; a brother, Ronald (Peggy) Leggitt of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Leggitt was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Robert and Danny.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, February 10, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Walt Nichols officiating. Interment was at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Homer Area Community Foundation.

Owner recalled for his compassion

Homer businessman James Leggitt died Friday after suffering a heart attack.
Leggitt and his wife Tina owned and operated Homer Automotive and Service Center since 1986, and the Coin Operated Laundry.
Jerry Irvin, owner for Irvin’s Hardware, remembers Leggitt as the “most kind-hearted person I know.
“He put everyone else first,” Irvin said. “If someone’s vehicle broke down on the road he’d stay longer at work to get them back on the road. He was truly compassionate toward other people. His kids and grandkids were his entire life.”
The Leggitts overcame a pair of fires at the automotive shop, rebuilding each time, stating they had faith in the Homer community.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. The complete obituary can be found on page 6.

Velma Elizabeth Tuck
Velma Elizabeth Tuck, 101, formerly of Homer, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, in Sarasota, Florida.
Mrs. Tuck was born on November 30, 1907, in Chatfield, Ohio, to Jacob and Rosetta Heiser.
She was raised on her parents’ Ohio farm, and graduated from Chatfield High School and Tiffin Business University.
She married Robert Edward Tuck on May 8, 1929, in Detroit. and he preceded her in death.
Following their marriage, they lived in Ferndale and Walled Lake, Michigan before moving to Homer, where they operated a dairy farm and raised and educated their children. Following their retirement from farming, they resided in the State of Florida.
She was a lady of great kindness, patience, tolerance of others and lived a life of hard work and service to her family.
She is survived by her sister, Bernice Giesin; five sons, Dr. Lyle E. Tuck of Comstock Park, Robert C. Tuck of Marshall, Dr. Ronald L. Tuck of St. Clair, Terrence J. Tuck and Dr. Gerald W. Tuck of Great Falls, Montana; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Tuck was preceded in death by her brother, Otis Heiser.
A memorial service will be scheduled in the coming months in the Ohio county of her birth.
An interment will follow in the Windfall Cemetery near Chatfield, Ohio.

Ethan James Castle
Ethan James Castle, 17 months, died January 16, 2009.
Ethan is the son of Gregg Gorsline and Brandi Castle, both formerly of Homer. He is the grandson of Homer native, Dennis Gorsline and his wife Christine of Marshall.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 21, at 11 a.m., at the Marshall United Methodist Church.
A luncheon service will follow in the fellowship hall.

Dorothy M. Warner
Dorothy M. Warner, 73, of Homer, died Sunday, February 15, 2009, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.
Mrs. Warner was born November 8, 1935, in Coldwater to Edwin and Leona (Lincoln) Yockey. She had lived in the Homer area since 1968, and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion.
Mrs. Warner was a Licensed Practical Nurse for 42 years, working at many healthcare facilities in Coldwater, Albion and Marshall, as well as Spring Arbor Manor. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed gardening and all sorts of arts and crafts. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and found a special joy in her life, caring for her great-granddaughter Sydney.
Survivors include three sons, Tom (Tina) Waller and Tim (Torre) Waller, both of Coldwater, and David (Suzanne) Warner of Homer; two daughters, Peggy (Kenneth) Butler and Tamara (Carl) Bagwell, both of Homer; three sisters, Doretha Johnson of Coldwater, Myrtle (Don) Slusher of Litchfield and Rita Jane Hantz of Coldwater; 15 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
An announcement with date and time for a memorial to be held will be released by the family at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Evelyn G. Lukazcek
Evelyn G. Lukazcek, 73, of Quincy, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Lukazcek was born April 14, 1935, in Albion, to Earl and Lucretia (Juckett) Howard.
She married Lewis Lukazcek January 1, 2000, and he survives.
Mrs. Lukazcek had lived in the Branch County area for the past 25 years. She graduated from Albion High School in 1953, where she was a member of the glee club. She had worked at Tekonsha Engineering for many years, retiring in 2002.
She was a member of Lockwood Community Church and enjoyed traveling, cooking and sewing. She devoted her life to her family and children.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lukazcek is survived by a son, Chuck (Darla) Miller of Quincy; a stepson, Andy (Brianna) Lukazcek of Quincy; a daughter, Gwen (Gerald) Case of Quincy; four stepdaughters, Kerri (Terry) Cole of Marengo, Sherri (Phil) West of Grove Town, Georgia, Shantel Ashley of Albion and Jolie Ann (Ryan) Conley of Orlando, Florida; a brother, Glenn (Marjorie) Howard of Springfield, Illinois; a sister, Mary (Rodney) Horton of Tekonsha; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Howard; a grandson, Joshua Case; and a great-aunt, Rita Juckett.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 21, at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater, with Dave Brown from the Lockwood Community Church officiating.
Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery in Albion.

Franklin Fay Weller, Sr.
Franklin Fay Weller, Sr., 44, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Mr. Weller was born March 7, 1964, in Coldwater, to Robert and Marjorie (Brown) Weller.
He graduated from Jonesville High School in 1986, and was employed at Asplundh Tree Service.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Weller of Ceresco and Charlene Weller of Litchfield; a son, Franklin Weller, Jr. of Litchfield; their mother, Flossie (Nichols) of Litchfield; three grandchildren, Kaylie, Tabitha and Maddison; and one brother and four sisters.
Mr. Weller was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and a brother.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 22, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Carl Litchfield officiating.

Roseda Ann Gray
Roseda Ann Gray, 34, of Albion, died Sunday, February 22, 2009, in Battle Creek.
Ms. Gray was born June 8, 1974, in Albion, to Kenneth and Sherry (Cline) Warrick. She attended Springport High School and attended college for two years.
She worked as a home health care aid. She loved babies, flowers and animals. She sang in the church choir as a young girl.
Survivors include a daughter, Victoria Gray, and a son, Adam Gray, both of Springport; her mother and stepfather, Sherry and Lawrence Jones of Albion; her father, Kenneth Warrick of Hanover; four sisters, Terry Allen of Homer, Diana Hostetler of Albion, Marilyn Cornell of Belleville, and La-Tesha Owens of Ypsilanti; three brothers, Daryl Burkwalt of Albion, and Kenneth Mulkey and Thomas Owens, both of Potterville; her grandfather and stepgrandmother, James and Eloise Cline of Mosherville; her godmother, Lori Langston of Albion; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
A memorial service was held Thursday, February 26, at Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion, with the Rev. Earl Martin officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to her childrens’ fund.

Sarah Jane Durall
Sarah “Jane” Durall, 76, of Mosherville, died Friday, February 27, 2009, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
She was born January 11, 1933, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Walter and Sadie Wireman.
She married Charles Franklin Durall on September 11, 1965, and he preceded her in death January 16, 1994.
Mrs. Durall worked as a certified nursing assistant at Spring Arbor Manor and was the current president of the Mosherville Ladies Aid. She loved her cat, and enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and canning.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie Gordan of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Gordan of Jonesville, Amy (Steve) Cain of Somerset Center and Michael (Kari) Prater of Litchfield; a great-grandson, Gage Paul Cain; three sisters, Kash Sanford, Charlene Sanford and Erma Lovely; and five brothers, Harold Dean Wireman, Claude Wireman, Bob Wireman, Clyde Wireman and Russell Wireman.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Charles and Paul Prater; two sisters; a brother; and a great-grandson.
A memorial service was held Monday, March 2, at George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.

Joel Schartzer
Joel Schartzer of Goshen, Indiana, died Monday, February 23, 2009, after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, and his parents John and Nancy Schartzer of Bryan, Ohio, former residents of Homer.

Lois Jean (Bowersox) Woodhurst
Lois Jean (Bowersox) Woodhurst, 85, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at her home in Homer after a seven year battle against diabetes and kidney disease.
Mrs. Woodhurst was born April 4, 1923, in Battle Creek, to Grover and Murtle (Kidder) Fauser.
She married Duane F. Bowersox September 23, 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1987. She married Earl Woodhurst July 14, 1990, and he survives.
Mrs. Woodhurst worked at the Toy Factory in Jackson for four years, and later with the Homer School System as a kitchen employee.
She enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, traveling and spending time with her family. She was a VFW life member and a former member of Homer First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Woodhurst is survived by two daughters, Connie (the late Bernie) Siegel of Tekonsha and Carole (Terry) Arnold of Albion; a son, David (Paula) Bowersox of Homer; a sister, Jackie (John) King of Albion; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Bonita Robinson, and her stepfather, Art Hoaglin.
A funeral service was held Monday, March 9, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Tom Fox officiating. Burial was at Albion Memory Gardens.

Sharon F. Sargent
Sharon F. Sargent, 60, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at her home in Hillsdale.
Mrs. Sargent was born October 4, 1948, in Ohio, to Harold and Delores (Riley) Duncan.
She married Lester Sargent March 1, 2009, and he survives.
Mrs. Sargent attended schools in Litchfield and Homer, and had worked at Hilex Controls in Litchfield until her retirement in 2004.
She enjoyed bingo, crocheting, knitting and spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband Mrs. Sargent is survived by four sons, Terry (Annette) LaRoe and Corey (Melissa) LaRoe, both of Hillsdale, Bobby (Mandy) LaRoe of Phoenix, Arizona, and Tim (Melissa) LaRoe of Pittsford; two sisters, Kay Wolffe of Hillsdale and Tina (Steve) Avery of Homer; two brothers, Ed (Tracey) Duncan of Hillsdale and Frank (Shirley) Duncan of Litchfield; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kevin; a brother, Fred Duncan; and a grandson, Timothy.
The funeral service is scheduled for today at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Carl Litchfield officiating. Interment will be at Cambria Cemetery #2 at a later date.

Ian Nathanial Dunn
Ian Nathanial Dunn, 12, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, after a tragic accident at his home in Homer.
Ian was born September 4, 1996, to Crystal and Kevin Dunn. They survive.
He enjoyed life and impressed everyone with his sharp wit and capacity for learning. He loved the outdoors, especially soccer, golf, baseball, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, and enjoyed spending time with his friends and father in pursuit of his next merit badge.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Alyssa and Sara; grandparents Sandra Dunn, Dwight and Robin Dunn, Sonny and Cindy Moore, and Linda and Audie Miller; and dozens of other relatives and close friends, of both Homer and Marshall.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, at Craig Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall.
Interment followed at East Eckford Cemetery.

Accident kills boy, 12

A 12-year-old boy, Ian Dunn, who was home sick from school, was accidentally shot to death by his father Tuesday, March 3, at 325 W. Everett Street in Homer.
While the case remains under investigation, law enforcement officials are calling it accidental, although they are treating it as a homicide until all the evidence has been processed.
Homer Police Chief Steve Fisher said his department was dispatched to the home at 2:04 p.m. Upon arrival they found the father, Kevin Dunn, 40, over the boy, who was laying on his right side, surrounded by a great deal of blood on the carpet. He had been shot once just below the right ear. Kevin Dunn called 911 after the incident.
“The father was crying terribly, saying, ‘Oh my God, what have I done to my boy,’ ” Fisher said.
According to the father, he was trying to clean a revolver, when it accidentally discharged, striking the boy, who was in the next room, about 15 feet away. The father told police he didn’t know the gun was loaded.
Fisher said the gun was an Italian 44-calibre revolver that worked on black powder and ball, similar to a muzzleloader.
Fisher said the gun was old and rusty. The father was having trouble opening the cylinder, and he had the hammer back and it slipped.
The police chief added he tried to comfort the father and the boy, who was still breathing, but unresponsive.
Joel Flees was the first officer on the scene. He said a neighbor, Jon Patton, met him outside and told him what happened.
“The neighbor gave me a heads up on the situation,” Flees said. “I went into the home, saw what had happened, and called the fire department (which has a first responder emergency medical team). The information we first received wasn’t clear. We weren’t told a 12-year-old was involved until we got there.”
Flees said Kevin Dunn was with his son trying to help.
“He was pretty devastated,” the officer said.
First responders from the Homer Fire Department tried to revive the victim with a defibrillator, but were not successful. He was pronounced dead at 2:27.
The boy attended school in Marshall, but had been sick the past two days. He was staying at his father’s, along with his sisters Alyssa and Sara. The girls, 10 and 7, were at the house, but were outside. Kevin Dunn was supposed to take the girls to school, but had car trouble that morning. The home is owned by the boy’s grandmother, Sandy Dunn of Marshall.
Kevin Dunn was taken to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office in Marshall, where he was interviewed by Detective Bryan Gandy.
He told Gandy that Ian had woke up at 4 a.m. throwing up. He added he was unable to take the girls to school that morning because of trouble with his vehicle. His father came over later in the morning and they were able to get it operational. They went to the family farm, and stopped at Dairy Delite for ice cream on the way home. Once at home, he began to clean the gun.
An autopsy was performed the following day at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, but the results may not be known for several weeks.
Funeral services were held Monday at Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. His mother is Crystal Dunn. The complete obituary may be found on page 6.
While the investigation continues, Fisher believes the shooting was accidental.
“They were having a good day,” he said of the family. “They had just finished having ice cream cones. It was a tragic situation.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” he added.

James Stevens Staten
James Stevens Staten, 47, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, in Hillsdale.
Mr. Staten, affectionately known as “Blue” to family and friends, was born April 29, 1961, in Coldwater, to Donald and Clara (Phyllis Stevens) Staten. They survive in Springport.
He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1979 and worked at a DCA Food Industries (Stock’s Mill) facility for more than 20 years before becoming an over-the-road long haul semi driver.
Mr. Staten was an avid sportsman, enjoying coon and deer hunting.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Staten is survived by a sister, Deborah (Donald) Campbell of Galion, Ohio; two brothers, Aaron (Lisa) Staten of Litchfield and Barron (Carolyn) Staten of Indianapolis, Indiana; a niece, Kathryn (Matthew) Campbell-Thomas of Homer; and five nephews, Kyle (Lacey) Campbell of Homer, Nathaniel Staten of Albion, Bradley Chapman of Quincy  and Christopher Staten and Nicholas Staten, both of Jonesville.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Kay.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 16, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating.

Wayne Donald Moulton, Jr.
Wayne Donald Moulton, Jr., 66, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his home in Hillsdale.
Mr. Moulton was born October 26, 1942, in Hillsdale County, to Wayne D. and Genevieve (Sayles) Moulton.
He was retired from Hi-Lex Controls in Litchfield and enjoyed NASCAR and golf.
Mr. Moulton is survived by his former wife, Bernice (Finegan) Moulton of Jonesville; a daughter, Vonda Cekander of Jerome; a sister, Louise (Roy) Signor Jr. of Litchfield; five brothers, Gary Moulton of Jonesville, Ruben (Marty) Moulton of Gladwin, Conrad (Judy) Moulton of Horton, Ronald (Jeanie) Moulton of Arizona and William “Bill” (Lucy) Moulton of Coldwater; two grandchildren, Milo Cekander of Reading and Brandi Cole of Moscow; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment in Cambria Cemetery #1 will follow at a later date.

Paul F. Jones Sr.
Paul F. Jones Sr., 71, of Marshall died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the home of his son.
Mr. Jones was born on November 15, 1937, in Newton Township, to Charles F. and Marguerite Rose (Yost) Jones.
He married Marilyn Sue (Holmes) Jones of Homer May 11, 1963 in Marshall. She survives.
He graduated from Marshall High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years serving on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Mr. Jones was a millwright for the Eaton Company in Marshall for 32 years before retiring in 1991. He was president of the Local UAW 220 retirees and a member of the Marshall Moose Lodge #676, Fredonia Grange, Calhoun County Agricultural Indusial Society, B.E. Henry Community Building board and East Eckford Community Church.
He helped with the moving and restoration of the Houston School and the Old Maple Grove Church and was honored with a life membership to the Calhoun County Agricultural Indusial Society for his years of hard work and service to the fairgrounds.
In addition to his wife, he is survived two sons, Paul (Theresa) Jones Jr. of Marshall and Doug (Linda) Jones of Olivet; four grandchildren, Jodi, Kevin, Katelyn and Nick Jones; a sister, Rosalie (Jack) Combs; and a brother, LaVern (Bonnie) Jones; all of Marshall.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17, at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Wilson officiating. Interment followed at Oakridge Cemetery.

Lester Donald Sargent
Lester Donald Sargent Jr,, 61 died Friday, March 13, 2009 in his HIllsdale home.
Mr. Sargent was born March 31, 1948 in Nashua, New Hampshire to Lester D. and Lillian (Braley) Sargent, Sr.
He married Sharon (Duncan) Sargent March 1, 2009 , and she preceded him in death March 7, 2009.
Mr. Sargent served in the U.S. Marine Corps before working at Schillings Graphics in Galion, Ohio as a painter. He then worked at Jesco Industries in Litchfield.
He enjoyed camping, picnics, baseball, swimming and working on cars.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Aaron) McDonald of Quincy, Camille Sargent and fiance Timothy Yates of Galion, Ohio; two sons, Brian (Jessica) Sargent of Galion, Ohio and Michael (Deanna) Taylor of Bucyrus, Ohio; two sisters, Brenda (Kenneth) Westfall of Lafayette, Oregon and Elaine Forrence of Nashua, New Hampshire; his former wife, Arnella Thompson of Mansfield, Ohio; and 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Melissa.
Funeral services will be Held Friday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield with Pastor Carl Litchfield officiating. Interment at Cambria Cemetery #2 will follow at a later date.

Bronwen T. Moorman
Bronwen T. “Brownie” Moorman, 79, of Homer, died Friday, March 13, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital.
Ms. Moorman was born on September 8, 1929, in Puryear, Tennessee, to Thomas and Ruby (Lewellyn) Thomas.
She graduated high school in Independence, Missouri.
Ms. Moorman was a retired data processor for IBM Corporation in Virginia. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Springfield, Virginia.
She enjoyed watching soap operas, reading tabloids, going to horse shows, shopping and yard sales. She enjoyed spending time with her dog, cat, and her family, especially talking with her grandsons.
She is survived by a daughter Stacy (Monty) Montgomery of Homer; a son Alan (Gwen) Moorman of Midlothian, Virginia; three grandsons, Brenton, Jared and Nicholas Moorman; two sisters, Gwendolyn Crimm of Independence Missouri and Novella Wiley of Englewood, Florida.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 17, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home.

Edward Roy Guajardo
Edward Roy Guajardo, 72, of Litchfield, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater.
Mr. Guajardo was born February 12, 1937, to Phillip G. and Sophia (Ramirez) Guajardo in Ranger, Texas.
He married Mary Ann Biglow May 5, 1959, and she survives.
Mr. Guajardo worked at Simpson Stamping and the Litchfield Grain Company. He enjoyed fishing and crafts.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward (Betty) Guajardo, Jr. of Litchfield and William Guajardo of Hillsdale; a daughter, Rita Guajardo of Litchfield; a sister, Mary Soto of Chicago; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Juanita Robinson
Juanita Robinson, 71, formerly of Homer, died Thursday, March 19, at her home in Albion.
Mrs. Robinson was born June 29, 1937, in Salyersville, Kentucky, to Melvin and Pearlie (Williams) Hackworth.
She married Dennis Robinson in Homer July 26, 1958. He preceded her in death April 9, 1993.
Mrs. Robinson worked at Huffman farms in Homer and was also a homemaker. She enjoyed walking and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, Danny Robinson of Albion; four grandchildren; a sister, Shirley (“Ike”) Caudill of Richmond, Virginia; and one brother, Hershel Hackworth of Bradenton, Florida.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Doug and Darrell G. Robinson; and three brothers, James, Clovis and Jerry Hackworth.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 24, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Tim Marvil officiating.

Betty J. Knuth
Betty J. Knuth, 91, of Homer, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Tendercare of Albion surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Knuth was born October 3, 1917, in Cass County, to Leon and Nellie (Garrett) Phillips.
She married Raymond Knuth May 27, 1950. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Mrs. Knuth was a homemaker and farmed with her husband. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albion and a member of the Altar Guild.
She enjoyed rug hooking and gardening.
Mrs. Knuth is survived by two daughters, Susan (David) Crall of Litchfield and Sheryl Knuth of Kalamazoo; three sons, Charles (Janice) Knuth of Marshall, Steven Knuth of Homer and Philip Knuth of Potterville; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Franz and a grandson, Brock Knuth.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 27, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion with Pastor Gary Nehring, assisted by Vicar Mike Belinsky, officiating. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer. Contributions are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church and Lifespan Hospice.

Gloria Wyvonne Lincoln
Gloria Wyvonne Lincoln, 78, of Quincy, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Lincoln was born November 27, 1930, in Litchfield Township, to Boyd and Mae (Rupe) Caldwell.
She married Aaron “Butch” Lincoln December 25, 1961. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Mrs. Lincoln graduated from Litchfield High School in 1948 and had been employed at Mashon-Dorsey Memorials in Coldwater.
She enjoyed reading, gardening and her cats.
She is survived by a son, Dennis Wolfe of Quincy; a sister, Wanda (George) Hart of Indianapolis, Indiana; and a brother, Robert (Beth) Caldwell of Delaware, Ohio.

Rev. David C. Bushong
The Rev. David C. Bushong, 52, of Great Falls, Montana, died Tuesday, March 30, 2009, at a local hospital of cancer after a three year battle with cancer.
Rev. Bushong was born April 11, 1956, to Craig Valetta (Bleam) Bushong. He met and married Kelley Poirer in Great Falls.
He grew up in Homer, where he graduated from Homer Community Schools in 1974. He played varsity football for four years and went on to play football at Olivet College, then transferred to Kellogg Community College, where he earned an associates degree.
He started work at a foundry when he was 16 and continued that work for most of his life, mostly at Hayes Albion and Spray Metal Mold and Technology.
In December 1995, Rev. Bushong was called to the ministry and moved to Great Falls, to pursue it. While in Montana, he was a laborer, most recently at the International Malting COmpany.
He was ordained as a minster August 10, 2003, and worked under the guidance of the Rev. Phillip Caldwell.
He enjoyed spending his free time with his family, camping, fishing, woodworking and attending sporting events. He was an avid hunter with his son Justus and special friend, the Rev. Dempsey Harshaw, and enjoyed watching his girls play softball.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jason E. (Jennifer) Bushong of Fort Carson, Colorado, and Justus D. Bushong of Great Falls; two daughters, Lacey J. Bushong and Cayley B. Bushong, both of Great Falls; a sister, Claudette (Don) Tinney of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren; two nieces; and a very special young man who was like a son to him, Josh Cornell of Great Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 3, 2009, at Mount Olive Christian Fellowship Church. Interment followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Richard Lee Pitts
Richard Lee Pitts, 81, of Litchfield, died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Allegiance Health Care in Jackson.
Mr. Pitts was born May 9, 1927, in Lottie, Ohio, to Jesse and Jearda (Swanson) Pitts.
He married Joyce Yeager October 26, 1947. She survives.
Mr. Pitts served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had worked at Hayes Albion Corp., Simpson Industries and Game Time Inc.
He belonged to the VFW, American Legion, Litchfield United Methodist Church and area sportsman’s clubs. He was a former member of the IOOF Lodge.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Pitts is survived by three sons, Terry (Diana) Pitts of Jackson, Richard (Connie) Pitts of Mio and Daniel (Sheryl) Pitts of Litchfield; two sisters, Betty Strong of Morro Bay, California, and Iris Bradshaw of Jonesville; a brother, Harold Pitts of Litchfield; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 14, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Russell Cole
Russell Cole, 65, formerly of Litchfield, died at his home in Highlands, Texas, Friday, April 10, 2009, surrounded by his wife, Doris Cole, and family members.
Mr. Cole was born in Vanlue, Ohio, and raised in Litchfield. He moved to Texas to work as a diesel mechanic.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons, Michael Webster (Kunthy) of Jackson, Russell K. Cole of Quincy, Douglas A. Cole of Highlands, Ronny L. Cole of Jackson, and Brian R. (Ken Bowman) Cole of Highlands; a daughter, Viki L. (Robert) Cole of Alvin, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; his father, Ova Cole of Jonesville; a brother, Lawrence Cole; and five sisters, Julie, Ida, Diane, Penny and Tinny.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lala (Turner) Cole, and a sister, Mary Jane.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday, April 16, from 5-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m., at the funeral home, with interment following in Pulaski Cemetery.

Joseph V. Domingo Sr.
Joseph V. Domingo Sr., 84, of Homer, formerly of Albion, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at his residence in Homer with family and Hospice present.
Mr. Domingo was born in Albion February 10, 1925, to Frank and Rosario (DiAngelo) Domingo.
He served in the U.S. Army and was wounded during World War II.
He was a lifelong resident of Albion and spent winters in Texas. He owned and operated Domingo Construction Company for more than 50 years before retiring.
He was a life member of the Albion V.F.W., Elks, American Legion, Moose and several other organizations.
He is survived by three daughters, Sue (Bob) Clevenger, Mary Jo Hagerman and Jenny (Brian) Marsh; three sons, John D. Domingo, Larry (Janet) Domingo and Albion Mayor Joseph V. (Jill) Domingo, Jr.; a sister, Antionette (Dale) Canull; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Domingo; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Michael Domingo; a son, James Domingo; a daughter, Sandra Watson; a brother, Tony Domingo; and his children’s mother, Mary Lutzke Cashner.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 16, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral in Albion.
According to his wishes, he will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Teresa Mary Hunter
Teresa Mary Hunter, 55, of Litchfield, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at home.
Mrs. Hunter was born May 29, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, to James and Eleanor (Pasta) Byrnes.
She married Glen Hunter December 18, 1970, and he preceded her in death in 1987.
She graduated from Columbia Central High School in Brooklyn, Michigan, in 1972, and furthered her education at Jackson Community College School of Nursing. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse and was employed at the South Michigan Pain Clinic in Marshall.
She was a member of St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Concord.
Mrs. Hunter is survived by her mother, Eleanor Kropilak of Rutherfordton, North Carolina; a daughter, Janis Caruso-Russell (James Russell, Jr.) of Homer; a son, David (Kelly) Hunter of PawPaw; her companion for 20 years, Hans Elser of Litchfield; three sisters, Peggy Byrnes, Kathy Wake and Monica Wesner; six brothers, William, Bob, Jack, Pat, Tommy and Jerry Byrnes; eight grandchildren, Samantha, Jessica, Andrea and Michael Caruso, Jade and Alaina Russell and Jackson and Austin Hunter; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father and stepfather, Stephen Kropilak.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 16, at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church, with Father Lewis Eberhart officiating.
Interment in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield will be at a later date.

Owen E. Betz
Owen E. Betz, 94, of Marshall, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at his residence under the care of his family.
Mr. Betz was born December 28, 1914, in DeKalb County, Indiana, to Clyde and Emma Faye (Teeters) Betz.
He married Laurene Thorp October 31, 1943 in Angola, Indiana. She survives.
He was a self-employed dairy farmer and farmed all his life. He served on the board of the Michigan Milk Producers for many years, as well as the Homer School Board.
In 1969 he became an ordained minister of Jehovah’s Witnesses and served as an elder in various congregations in Marshall, Coldwater, Albion, Ironwood and Bushnell, Florida.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven daughters, Dorothy (Gaylord) Krumvede, Joan Stallworth, Rosalyn (Don) Holmes, Carrol (Dan) Rogers, Jean (Larry) Willis, Katherine (Paul) Edelman and Beverly (Don) Hatch; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, on 327 Jonesville Road in Coldwater.

Mike A. Egnatuk
Mike A. Egnatuk, 65, of Albion, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mr. Egnatuk was born September 19, 1943, in Albion, to Egnat and Anna (Slivoskey) Egnatuk.
He married Carol Anderson June 24, 1972. She survives.
Mr. Egnatuk worked at the Texaco Station in Albion and for Arnold’s Tire and Battery. He owned Albion Shell Station on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Superior Street, supporting the Albion High School Co-op.
He built and owned the Homer Shell Food Mart on M-60 in 1987 and retired in 1997.
He was a member of the St. Elias Eastern Orthodox Church. He was on the Albion Township Zoning Commission and Board of Review, former president of the Greater Albion Scholarship Fund and its fund-raising event, hosting the first old-timers’ basketball game.
Mr. Egnatuk supported the Albion and Homer Boy Scouts and the Michigan Youth Corporation Power Project. He was also involved with or donated to the United Way, Homer Fire Department, Homer Public Library, the reconstruction of the town circle, Veteran’s Memorial Walkway, canoe race for Boy Scouts, the Calhoun County livestock auction, Spring Arbor College, Leon Draime Memorial Golf Outing, Homer Athletic Booster Club, middle school football uniforms, “Player of the Week” program, NFL “F.A.C.T.” Program for fourth grade students, prom night mystery trip, Free Immunization Clinic at Homer High School and he was an avid supporter of the Homer Community and public school system.
In retirement, he worked at Oakland Hills Golf Course, and was a driver and friend of the Amish community of Homer.
He loved spoiling his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tamme (Paul) Bearman of Marshall; two grandchildren, Daniel and Kristina Bearman of Marshall; a godson, Michael Karazim of Boston; a brother, Tony (Ginny) Egnatuk of Lansing; two sisters, Dorothy Peacock and Katherine Carl, both of Homer; four brothers-in-law, Harold Collmenter of Homer, Douglas (Ruth Ann) Anderson of Jackson, David (Cheryl) Anderson of Mattawan and Leonard (Patti) Anderson of Dyersburg, Tennessee; a sister-in-law, Kristine Collom of Biloxi, Mississippi; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives in Belarus and Russia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; a grandmother, Helen Ignatuk; three brothers, Alex, Paul and George; two sisters, Olga and Mary Ann; and three sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Eleanor and Marion.
A funeral service was held Thursday, April 23, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Father Dusan Koprivica officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Leland “Dawayne” Murphy, Jr.
Leland “Dawayne” Murphy, Jr., 63, of Homer, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Murphy was born March 7, 1946, in Albion, to Leland D. and Alma June (Dolph) Murphy, Sr.
He married Sarah Goodman June 23, 1973. She survives.
Mr. Murphy served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a machine setup operator at Decker Manufacture for 39 years, retiring in 2008 due to ill health.
He was an avid U of M and Detroit Lions football fan, and enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Trisha (Tim) Nelson of Homer; a son, Dawayne (Kristen) Murphy of Homer; a sister, Susan (Harry) Armistead of Homer; a brother, Steven (Barb) Murphy of Holland; five grandchildren, Madison, Lauren, Camron, Allison and Logan; and a special friend, Larry Sweeter.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 28, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Reverend Larry Anglemeyer officiating. Interment will be at Albion Memory Gardens.

Dorothy Ann Beerman
Dorothy Ann Beerman, 87, of Albion, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Spectrum Health United Memorial in Lakeview.
Mrs. Beerman was born September 4, 1921, in Sheridan Township, to Henry and Eva (Granger) Arnold.
She was a college graduate and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
She married George Beerman January 2, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Beerman was self-employed and co-owned the A&W restaurant in Homer with her husband. They also sold real estate. She taught school for a short time in Albion.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Albion and a member and founder of a ladies’ prayer group for several years. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ.
She is survived by four daughters, Carol Ann (Ralph) Woodard of Edmore, Cynthia (Sam) Veatch of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Deborah (Steve) Spriggs of Homer and Sandra (John) Lake of Albion; a son, George A. (Drucilla) Beerman of Ocean Ridge, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Beerman was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Rex Arnold; and two grandchildren, Kevin Lake and Janet Beerman.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the J. Kevin Funeral Home in Albion.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Albion, with Pastor Thomas Hollowood and the Rev. Wilbur Wagenshutz officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Rex D. Wildt
Rex D. Wildt, 67, of Alamo, Texas, formerly of Homer, died Friday, March 20, 2009.
Mr. Wildt was born April 13, 1941, in Albion, to Lloyd Charles and Ruth L. (Thomas) Wildt.
He married Phyllis Rossin April 6, 1968. She survives.
He was a self-employed farmer and brick/block mason in the Homer area most of his life and was a real estate broker for 25 years in the local area.
Mr. Wildt was a member of several churches, taught Sunday school and sang in the choirs. He loved helping people and serving the Lord. He also loved family, fishing trips, traveling, early morning coffee groups (in Homer, Tekonsha and Texas), his many friends, and most of all he loved raising his children and being a part of their lives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda (Eric) Hall of Indianapolis, Indiana; a son, Tim (Jodie) Anderson of Homer; and a brother, Wayne Wildt, also of Homer.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice, and an infant brother, Larry.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kim Wilcox officiating.
Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Virginia V. Rossman
Virginia V. Rossman, 90, of Litchfield, died Monday, April 27, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
Mrs. Rossman was born June 16, 1918, in Coldwater, to Leon and Cecelia (Hudson) Anton.
She married Albert Rossman June 25, 1960. He survives.
Mrs. Rossman graduated from Coldwater High School in 1936 and Western Michigan University in 1943 with a teaching certificate. She taught in the Coldwater and Sturgis schools and was also a substitute teacher in the area for several years.
She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Coldwater and the Litchfield Sorosis Club.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Mark (Melanie) Rossman of Litchfield; a sister, Genevieve Lacko of Kalamazoo; and two grandchildren, Veronica and Shannon Rossman of Litchfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 30, at St. Charles Catholic Church, with Father Brian Stanley officiating.
Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard.

Carl G. Moquist
Carl G. Moquist, 90, of Battle Creek, formerly of Homer, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at home after a short illness.
Mr. Moquist was born September 2, 1918, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Victor and Emma (Svenson) Moquist.
He married H. Dorothea Jensen in Port Clinton, Ohio, June 15, 1952. She survives.
He graduated from Mitchell High School, and in 1951 graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in dairy science.
Mr. Moquist enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and was assigned to the 11th Airborne Division as a medic. He was discharged in 1948.
He worked at Pet Milk Company in Homer for 15 years as a field manager. He was also a Realtor with the Belcher Real Estate Company in Marshall, was in car sales for Boshears Ford and was a manager of the Homer City Bank for five years.
Mr. Moquist was a member of the Homer Presbyterian Church for 43 years, and served as an elder. After moving to Battle Creek in 1995, he was a member of the Maple United Methodist Church and Burnham Brook, where he enjoyed the fellowship.
He was also a councilman for the Village of Homer and a member of the Homer Lions Club for more than 40 years.
He was an avid member of the Calhoun County and the Michigan Democratic Party.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Moquist is survived by a son, John M. Moquist of Mason; a daughter, Joanie M. Moquist of Battle Creek; three grandchildren, Jennet Dyer, Jason Moquist and Amber Moquist; and two sisters, Eleanora Jenson of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Helen Anderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford.
Services will be held at a later date, and interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery with full military honors by the Fort Custer Honor Guard.

Gary W. Highlund
Gary W. Highlund, 72, of East Dubuque, Illinois, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Mr. Highland was born February 15, 1937, at Harbor Beach to Everett and Marion “Molly” (Elder) Highlund.
He married Leila “Lee” Gordon August 12, 1963, at the Methodist Church in Cozad, Nebraska. She survives.
Mr. Highland graduated from Homer High School in 1955, and was a veteran of the Air Force.
He owned and operated Highlund’s Floor Installation Co., working side by side with his wife for 45 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Highlund were 40-year members of the Lacoma Golf Club.
Highland’s great sense of humor was appreciated by everyone who knew him. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, watching sporting events and spending time with “Lucky.”
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Winnifred Gordon, of Homer; two sisters-in-law, Marlene (Bill) Koons of Homer and Patty (Bruno) Stoerger of Los Gatos, California; David (Nathalie) Morton and family of Hartland, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Lee Highlund.
Services were held Thursday, May 14, in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, with entombment in Linwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a Gary W. Highlund Memorial Fund has been established.

Leland R. Disbro
Leland R. “Diz” Disbro, 64, lifelong resident of Homer, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at home.
Mr. Disbro was born July 22, 1944, in Albion, to LaVern and Dorothy (Slagle) Disbro. She survives.
He married Cynthia K. Sarata November 8, 1980. She survives.
Mr. Disbro served six years, six months and 16 days in the National Guard, and was employed for 20 years at Brembo in Homer. Fishing and hunting were his favorite hobbies.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jared Disbro, of Homer; a step-daughter, Reagan McCulla, of Royal Oak; two sisters, Cora Gamble of Victoria, Texas, and Louise Disbro of Litchfield; a granddaughter, Taylor Colotti; a niece; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy Disbro, and a sister, Brenda Wright.
There will be no visitation or service. Memorial contributions are suggested to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice.

Helen Nora Heaton, 85, of Marshall, formerly of Homer, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Maplewood Assisted Living in Marshal.
Mrs. Heaton was born April 14, 1924, in Jackson County to Chauncey C. and Mabel Belle (Williams) Allen.
She married Fred D. Heaton June 28, 1947, in Concord, and he preceded her in death March 28, 1995.
She was a registered nurse at Sheldon Memorial Hospital, Albion Community and Trillium Hospital and was head nurse in the medical-surgical unit for 22 years, retiring in 1999.
She was a member of the American Nurses Association, Homer United Methodist Church, a life member of the Eastern Star and the Homer Carrick-Jarosz V.F.W. Post #9411 Auxiliary, Marshall Moose Lodge and was a former 4-H leader.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann (Burdette) Green of Homer and Linda (Bob) Densmore of Bellevue; two sons, Fred A. (Jan) Heaton and Bruce (Sue) Heaton, both of Homer; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly, three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Homer United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Fox officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Randy Lee Hulbert Jr.
Randy Lee Hulbert Jr., 31, of Homer, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Hulbert was born April 26, 1978, in Marshall, to Randy Lee and Laurie (Taylor) Hulbert Sr.
He had been a resident of the Homer area his entire life and worked for Walmart Distribution in Coldwater for six years. He had currently been working at Newco Industries in Litchfield. He enjoyed movies and playing video games.
He is survived by a daughter, Taylor Alexis Sammons of Tekonsha; a son, Brandon Lee Sammons of Tekonsha; his mother, Laurie Swafford and stepfather Steven Swafford of Homer; a brother, Kevin Swafford of Homer, two stepsisters, Lori Ann Swafford of North Adams and Amy Jo Swafford of Litchfield; two half sisters, Katrina Hulbert and Regina Hulbert, both of Litchfield; his grandmother, Ella Swafford of Homer; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Sandra Purucker, and great-grandparents Hilmar and Dorothy Fischer.
A private graveside funeral service will be held at a later date. J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Cynthia Kay Gorsline, 46, of Homer, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at her home.
Ms. Gorsline was born May 3, 1963, in Westminster, California. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a son, Corey McGaha of Homer; parents Bernard Larrey and Carol Gorsline of Homer; two sisters, Laura Tackett of Homer and Sue Leeper of Oklahoma; nieces and nephews Ryan Tackett and Mallory Tackett of Homer; Anthony Meter of California and Angela Meter of Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ashley McGaha.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place, and a graveside service for the cremains was held Monday, June 8, at Fairview Cemetery in Homer with the Rev. Tom Fox officiating.

Dolores June Butler
Dolores June Butler, 77, of Scottville, formerly of Homer, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Butler was born June 10, 1931, in Scottville, to William and Mabel (McGhan) Sanders. She married Billie D. Butler November 15, 1947, in Battle Creek. He preceded her in death October 5, 1995.
She formerly worked at Atkinson’s in Ludington as a machine operator, at Woolworth’s in Battle Creek, as a waitress for Zack’s Truck Stop, as a clerk for the Ben Franklin 5 & 10 and at Scottville Variety Store.
She enjoyed playing bingo with her friends, crocheting and making a variety of craft items. She loved celebrating the holidays with her family, making fudge for her grandchildren and staying busy.
She is survived by four daughters, Victoria (John) Malburg, Phyllis Kane, Nancy Miszewski (friend Jim Balinski), all of Scottville, and Kelly (Brad) Fredricks of Twin Lake; grandchildren Terenia and Mike Wilbur, Gregory and Ginger Malburg, Stacy Kane and friend Heraldo Vasquez, Josh Kane (friend Somer Rappuhn), Rochelle Miszewski, Brooke Naidus, Caleb Kane, Tyler Companion, Trevor Fredricks, Austin Krusinksi, Logan, Spencer and Carson Fredricks, and Aubrey and Gabby Balinksi; great-grandchildren Aleshia, Michael, Trenton, Adrianna, Amelia, Henry, Addison, Frankie, Vianca, Gabriella, Fabian, Katelyn and Caden; a great-great-granddaughter, Victoria; a brother, Roger (Darlene) Sanders, and two sisters, Sonja (Charles) Argue and Kathy (Bill) Wilson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death a son, Stephen Robert, and a brother, Gary LeRoy Sanders.

Kristy (Center) Emmons, 52, of Litchfield, died Monday, June 8, 2009, after a short, courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Emmons was born November 25, 1956, to Wayne and Jean Center, of Litchfield.
She is survived by her husband, Rick Emmons; four sons, Dom, Rickey, Jared and Justin; two sisters, Jeanine Center of Ann Arbor and Maurine Mullikin of Parma; and nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Emmons’ life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m., at her home at 239 Washington St., Litchfield.

Robert Lyle Griffiths
Robert Lyle Griffiths, 86, of Litchfield, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
Mr. Griffiths was born August 16, 1922, in Hillsdale County, to Harry and Hazel (Lambright) Griffiths.
He married Arlene (Corey) Griffiths in 1941. She survives.
He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had retired from Simpson Industries, Inc. in Litchfield, and was formerly a member of the Butler Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Griffiths is survived by a daughter, Sharon Stewart, of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Jim (Carol) Griffiths of Jackson; a brother, Earnest Griffiths of North Adams; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Harvey, Delbert and Ralph Griffiths.
A gathering to honor his life will be held Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.

Tyler Daniel Ayres, infant son of Daniel Ayres and Christina Bisanz, of Comstock Park, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Tyler is survived by his parents; maternal grandparents Wayne and Mary Bisanz of Belding; paternal Fran and Gil Tindall of Homer; maternal great-grandparents Marge and Ernst Bisanz of Georgia and Mildred and Walter Wilkins of Florida; and paternal great-grandparents Bud and Delores Pace of Hanover, formerly of Homer.
Tyler was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Forrest Ayres Jr.
Services were held June 12 and were handled by Johnson-Feverstein Funeral Home.

Donna Fay Spencer
Donna Fay Spencer, 59, of Dixon, Kentucky, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at her home.
She was born to Charles and Zelleree Dillion, who preceded her in death.
She worked at the Webster County School System as a cook, was a member of Liberty Praise Chapel in Providence, Kentucky, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Joe Spencer of Dixon; two sons, Dan Shepherd of Battle Creek and Brian Shepherd of Dixon; a daughter, Lori Weldon of Dixon; four brothers, Ronnie Dillion, Charles Dillion Jr. and Millard Dillion, all of Homer, and Ricky Dillion of Ellington, Connecticut; two sisters, Charity French of Angola, Indiana, and Evelyn Raza of Quincy; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, June 15, at Townsend Funeral Home in Dixon, with the Rev. Rick Oakley officiating. Burial was at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Dixon.

Thomas James Esterline
Thomas James Esterline, 80, of Litchfield, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Esterline was born November 11, 1928, in Hillsdale, to Lloyd and Marion (Whipple) Esterline.
He married Alice Bell July 8, 1954. She survives.
Mr. Esterline graduated from Litchfield High School in 1946 and attended Hillsdale College and Michigan State University, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Art.
He taught art in several area schools and colleges, including Jonesville, Litchfield, Homer and Concord Community Schools. He served in the U.S. Army and belonged to the Hillsdale American Legion and Hillsdale Art Guild.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joy (Mike) Thomas of Hartselle, Alabama, and Marion (Jim) Umgelter of Sacramento, California; a son, Matthew (Christine) Esterline of Macon, Georgia; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Michael Esterline.
A graveside memorial service will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale, followed by a celebration of his life at his home at 402 Jonesville Street, Litchfield.

Levi S. Curey
Levi S. Curey, 89, of Litchfield, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the Home View Nursing Home in Franklin, Indiana.
Mr. Curey was born February 28, 1920, in Litchfield, to Rex and Olive (Swope) Curey.
He married Doris Baldwin June 20,1947. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Curey graduated from Litchfield High School in 1937 and belonged to the I.O.O.F. Lodge. In addition to being a lifelong Litchfield farmer, he worked at DiBar Industries in Litchfield and was active in bowling and softball when he was younger.
He is survived by a daughter, Jana (Dale) Thomas of Martinsville, Indiana; two sons, Rick (Susan) Curey of Seymoure, Tennessee, and Michael (Alice) Curey of Gray, Tennessee; a sister, Pauline Lambright of Litchfield; a brother, Richard (Pauline) Curey of Litchfield; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ransom Curey, and a sister, Ruth Lent.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating.
Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Rex Wildt, 67, of Alamo, Texas, formerly of Homer, died March 20, 2009 in McAllen, Texas.

James William Collins
James William “Willie” Collins, 82, of Homer, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Tendercare of Albion.
Mr. Collins was born August 28, 1926, in Harden County, Ohio, to Jesse and Cindy (Watkins) Collins.
He had lived in the Homer area since 1942. He worked for several farmers as a laborer. He loved to draw, work outdoors and plant trees.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Collins of Albion, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence, George “Cliff,” Edward and Lewis Collins.
Graveside funeral services were held Monday at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Winford Collins officiating.

Yvonne J. Litchard
Yvonne J. Litchard, 84, of Albion, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Carelink of Jackson.
Mrs. Litchard was born April 26, 1925, in Albion, to F. Mack and Myrtle (Brandt) Smith.
She married Rex H. Litchard July 3, 1946, and he preceded her in death November 18, 2005.
She was a resident of the area all her life and was a former member of the Albion Women’s Club. She enjoyed letter writing, reading, golf, bowling, sewing, knitting and dancing. She especially enjoyed taking care of children and had traveled all 50 states.
Mrs. Litchard is survived by a daughter, Kristine Litchard of Homer; two songs, Rick Litchard and Kent (Connie) Litchard, both of Rock; a sister, Donna Zimmerman of Albion; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Leah Mae Stephens.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with burial at Albion Memory Gardens.

Joyce E. Chrysler
Joyce E. “Jo” Chrysler, 83, of Albion, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at home in the care of her family.
Mrs. Chrysler was born July 19, 1925, to William and Anna Mae (Huff) Valkema in Wayland.
She married Arthur C. Chrysler February 9, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Chrysler was a homemaker, also working as a grocery store cashier as well as for family-owned businesses, Chrysler Tire Co. and Chrysler Gallery.
She was a member of Coopersville Bible Church and was an avid reader who loved her family and the Lord.
She is survived by a son, Bruce (Trish) Chrysler of Liberty, South Carolina; two daughters, Sheryl (Mark) Boyer and Jerry (Greg) Gleason, both of Albion; a brother-in-law, Rev. C. Donald (Merle) Chrysler of Grand Rapids; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Edgar and Rev. Allan R. Valkema.
A funeral service was held Friday, June 26, at Cook Funeral Home, with the Rev. C. Donald Chrysler officiating. Interment took place at Rosedale Memorial Park.

Patricia Jones
Patricia Jones, 58, of Cassopolis died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at her home.
She was born January 26, 1951, in Petoskey, to Allen Robert and Phyllis (Hammontree) Winnick.
She was employed as an accountant for many years.
She is survived by her mother, Phyllis Winnick, of Litchfield; two sons, Brian (Kristin) Jones of Plainfield, Illinois, and Michael (Suzanne) Jones of Lake Orion; six grandchildren, Brian Jr., Nicholas, Alexis, Zachary, Sydnie and Mia; her companion, David Gerbers of Cassopolis; a sister, Roberta Pritchard of Reno, Nevada; and a brother, Allen Winnick of Litchfield.
She was preceded in death by her father, Allen Robert Winnick, and a brother, Jack Hammontree.
Private funeral services will be held at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, with burial at Mission Hills Cemetery to follow.

Olive L. Foley
Olive L Foley, 93, of Homer, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mrs. Foley was born November 22, 1915, in Homer, to B.G. and May Fisher.
She married Phayon W. Foley August 14, 1938, and he preceded her in death December 31, 2001.
Mrs. Foley was a dental assistant for Dr. Jones in Homer, then Dr. Rahrig in Albion for many years. She also farmed with her husband.
She was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Homer and was a Deacon. She was also a part of the group called Lend A Hand, helped deliver Meals on Wheels and was a Life Member of Eastern Star.
She enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening, hunting and camping.
She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Moor of Homer; a son, Michael (Marla) Foley of Ft. Collins, Colorado; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Jon) Clemens and Jason Foley; a sister, Rhoda Hartzell of Spring Arbor; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Foley was preceded in death by a sister, Flora Belle Bouldry.
A funeral service was held Monday at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion with the Rev. Tim Marvil officiating. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

John H. Brown
John H. Brown, 61, of Marshall, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mr. Brown was born August 3, 1947, in Hazard, Kentucky, to Charles and Nannie (Dixon) Brown.
He was a pattern maker at Harvard Industries, formerly Hayes Albion, for 23 years, retiring in 2000 due to ill health. He was president of the UAW at Harvard Industries.
He was a U.S. Army veteran from the Vietnam War, was a member of th Church of Christ in Marshall, and enjoyed fishing, golfing, small game hunting and games of chance.
Mr. Brown is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Brown of Kentucky and Jessica (Chad) Berry of Marshall; a son, Eddie Dale (April) Brown of Homer; a stepson, Jason Dillion of Homer; a step-daughter, Jennifer Dillion of Homer; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Edsel Brown of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, Hershel Brown of Homer, Billy Brown of Hazard, Kentucky, and Larry Brown of Albion; and seven sisters, Lilian Miller of Louisville, Kentucky; Rita Cornett and Linda Young, both of Tekonsha, Carol Brown of Coldwater, Marilyn Wooton and Cindy Terry, both of Hazard, and Malli Shore of Spring Hill, Florida.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; a sister, Bobbie Brown; two half-brothers and two half-sisters.
A funeral service was held Saturday, June 27 at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. John Torrey officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.

Pauline M. Lambright
Pauline M. Lambright, 93, a lifelong resident of Litchfield, died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
Mrs. Lambright was born May 17, 1916, in Litchfield, to Rex and Olive (Swope) Curey. She married Duane Lambright December 23, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Mrs. Lambright graduated from Litchfield High School and was a bus driver for Litchfield Community Schools for 22 years. She was a 70-year member of the Litchfield Rebecca Lodge and was the Litchfield site coordinator for the Hillsdale County Senior Services Center.
Mrs. Lambright enjoyed camping trips, playing the piano and organ, watching soap operas, playing cards and oil painting.
Survivors include a daughter, Regina (Gordon) Knapp of Litchfield; two sons, Rex (Carol) Lambright of Jonesville and Clifford (Judy) Lambright of Onsted; a brother, Richard (Pauline) Curey of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Harvey and Charles Lambright; a grandson, Tony Knapp; two brothers, Ransom and Levi Curey; and a sister, Ruth Lent.
Memorial services were held Monday, July 6, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating.
Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Wayne Van Patten
Wayne Van Patten, 86, of Jonesville, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at home.
Mr. Van Patten was born April 15, 1923, in Litchfield, to Melvin Wren and May Belle (Riker) Van Patten.
He married Helen Elaine Crandall August 10, 1947. She survives.
Mr. Van Patten graduated Litchfield High School in 1941, and worked as a bookkeeper at Simpson Manufacturing Company. He then became a banker and loan officer at Hillsdale County National Bank and retired in 1994 after 48 years of service.
He was a member of the Jonesville Rotary Club for 15 years, was a board member and past president of the Grosvenor House Museum, a former board member of the Hillsdale County Senior Services Center and was a sports reporter for area newspapers and radio for 45 years.
He was also a member of the Jonesville Presbyterian Church and men’s fellowship.
He enjoyed mowing his lawn and caring for his pets.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Ann (Donald) Johnson of Jonesville, and Wendy (Edward) Conklin of Litchfield; a son, Jeffrey Van Patten of Jonesville; five granddaughters, Jessica La Rue, Sara Draper, Christine Foreman, Elizabeth Dilyard and Heather Miller; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell D. Van Patten.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Gary Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Jana Kae Marshall
Jana Kae Marshall, 53, of Litchfield, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 14, 2009 in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
Mrs. Marshall was born March 18, 1956, in Battle Creek to Lyle E. and Joan M. (Goodrich) Reynolds.
She married Donald Marshall June 5, 1976. He survives.
She graduated from Union City High School as salutatorian in 1974, and graduated from KCC as a medical assistant. She had been employed at Litchfield Nursing Centre and Jones Chiropractic Center.
Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Litchfield United Methodist Church, and supported Litchfield Community Schools by serving as a class advisor and member of the athletic boosters. She loved her children and enjoyed attending their athletic events and watching them show cattle at the fair.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kayla Marshall, at home; two sons, Mark (and fiancee Alicia) Marshall of Jonesville and Neil Marshall of Concord; her mother, two sisters, Katrina (Gerald) Sexton and Marla (Richard) Colburn, both of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and a brother-in-law, Gary Hudson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Litchfield United Methodist Church, with interment following at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Robert “Bob” G. Brail
Robert “Bob” G. Brail, 45, of Homer and formerly of Marshall, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at his home in the care of his family.
Mr. Brail was born October 29, 1963, in Battle Creek, to Glenn Robert and Shirley Ann (Sweet) Brail. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1981.
He married Beth S. Flower March 10, 2006, in Battle Creek. She survives.
Mr. Brail had been employed as a robotic machinist repairman for Michigan Automotive Compressor Inc. in Parma. He had also worked at Collins and Aikman Company.
He loved motorcycles and owned a BMW. He was known to his friends as “BMW Bob.” He and his wife had traveled extensively on his bike and saw many parts of the county. He was also a Jimmy Buffet fan and loved going to music festivals.
He enjoyed the company of his many friends and enjoyed fishing, camping and sailing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his parents; two sons, Timothy (Megan) Brail of Marshall and Quinton A. Brail, at home; and stepchildren Shawn and Jenah Vanderpool, both of Homer.
A funeral service was held Friday, July 17, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home with Chaplain Allen Schipper officiating. Interment followed in Pulaski Cemetery.

Matthew Alan Hettiger
Matthew Alan Hettiger, 28, of North Muskegon, died Sunday, July 12, 2009 at home.
He was born April 10, 1981, in Coldwater.
He is survived by his mother, Kimberly Gowell of Jonesville; his father, Michael Hettiger of North Muskegon; a daughter, Madison Larabee of North Muskegon; two brothers, Nicholas and Derek Hettiger, both of North Muskegon; grandparents Keith (Joan) Post of Litchfield and grandmother, Marguerite Lust of Arizona; a niece, Zoe Mae DeMille; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Willard Bradley Sr. and Vernon Lust.
Funeral services were held Thursday,  July 16, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Ross Graham officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Donna Marie Gauger
Donna Marie Gauger, 81, of rural Jonesville, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Country Living Adult Foster Care in Hillsdale.
Mrs. Gauger was born September 26, 1927, in Jackson, to Floyd and Vernia (Lister) Barrington.
She married Robert Harold Gauger September 15, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1998.
Mrs. Gauger was a member of the Litchfield First Baptist Church, the Litchfield Historical Society and at one time the Mosherville Ladies Aid.
She is survived by two daughters, Vondalee (Richard) Cares of Jonesville and Janet (Jeff) Biggs of Homer; a son, Russell (Marcia) Gauger of Hillsdale; a sister-in-law, Twila Barrington of Litchfield; a brother-in-law, Donald (Helen) Gauger of Reading; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gauger was preceded in death by a son, Richard; one grandson and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 18, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastors Brent Stille and Alton Glazier officiating. Interment followed in Mosherville Cemetery.

Mark James Stockman, 63, of Litchfield Township, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at home.
Mr. Stockman was born February 12, 1946, in Hillsdale, to Walter L. and Eugenia V. (Keeling) Stockman.
He married Patricia Camp December 29, 1978. She survives.
Mr. Stockman was a robot welder at Hutchinson STS in Reading. He enjoyed his grandchildren and his dogs, playing cards and watching westerns.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Tiffany Stockman and Jinny Northrup, both of Litchfield; a son, Mark Stockman of Carson City; a sister, Emma (Alvin) Finch of Litchfield; two brothers, Richard (Jane) Stockman of Hillsdale and Sylvan (Darlene) Stockman of Homer; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie and a brother, Billy.

Virginia M. Blair, 57, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at her residence.
Ms. Blair was born May 8, 1952, in Concord, to Granis and Lillie (Damron) Blair.
She was a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and had worked for several years at Trillium Hospital in Albion and at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
She was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion, and enjoyed handcrafts, embroidery, sewing and singing. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Tina (John) Lance of Albion; a son, Robbie Lee (Linda) Burch, of Albion; three sisters, Bobbie Adams of Albion, Loretta Neal of Marshall and Brenda Tackett of Tennessee; a brother, Billy Blair of Concord and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Doug and Darrell Blair.
A private family service will be held. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Mr. McAdam was born December 16, 1941, in Royal Oak.
He was an employee of General Motors in Lansing for 30 years.

Demmodell Ratliff, Jr., 42, of Albion, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. 
Mr. Ratliff was born December 6, 1966, in Albion, to Demmodell and Kathy (Lawhorn) Ratliff, Sr.
He married the former Shelly Little November 11, 1992. She survives.
He worked construction and did home repairs, as well as worked for Grand Rental Properties and Davis Oil. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ratliff is survived by two daughters, Katherine Ratliff and Melinda Ratliff, both of Albion; a son, Terry Allen Rains of Kansas City, Missouri; three sisters, Peggy White of Plymouth, Melinda York of Oklahoma and Mellissa Rawlings of Albion; three brothers, Karl Cousino of Oklahoma, John Ratliff of Homer and Dusty Ratliff of Litchfield; one grandchild; his mother, Kathy Cousino of Albion; his father, Demmodell (Lillie May) Ratliff Sr. of Homer; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Karl Roger Cousino on January 26, 2003.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 p.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.

Jason Eric McGuigan
Jason Eric McGuigan, 22, of Albion, died Saturday, July 25, 2009, following an automobile accident in Homer Township.
Mr. McGuigan was born September 11, 1986, in Albion, to Kent and Judy (Sandusky) McGuigan.
He graduated from Homer High School, then Albion College, where he majored in business management and belonged to the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
Mr. McGuigan worked at Lowe’s in Jackson and was the assistant manager at the Bohm Theater in Albion.
He enjoyed art and drawing, hunting and fishing, restoring cars and had a love of history.
Mr. McGuigan is survived by his parents; two grandmothers, Mary Sandusky of Albion and Emily McGuigan of Corning, New York; a sister, Meghan McGuigan of Albion; a brother, Kalon McGuigan of Albion; his soul mate, Billie Jean Judge of Albion; and several close friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Pastor Steve Shafe officiating. Interment in Albion Memory Gardens followed.

Car accident claims life of HHS graduate

A 22-year-old Homer High School graduate was killed early Saturday morning when the car he was driving left the roadway, striking a couple of trees before turning over.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office, Jason McGuigan, of Albion, was travelling north on 24 1/2 Mile Road at approximately 3:49 a.m. when his 1997 BMW left the roadway near F Drive South in Albion Township. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
McGuigan graduated from Homer High School in 2005, and from Albion College this spring, with majors in business and economics.
McGuigan worked at Lowe’s in Jackson and was assistant manager at Bohm Theater in Albion.
He is survived by his parents, Kent and Judy McGuigan, a sister, Meghan, and a brother, Kalon. A complete obituary may be found on page 6.
Calhoun County Sheriff deputies were assisted by the Homer Police and Fire Departments, Albion Township Fire Department and Albion Ambulance.
Homer High School Principal Tom Salow remembers McGuigan as a “very pleasant young man. He was very highly thought of by the students and staff.”
Superintendent Rob Ridgeway had McGuigan as a student in his high school math class when he was teaching.
“He was just a well-behaved, smart young man,” Ridgeway recalled. “He was a great kid, someone you wanted to have in class.
“He just graduated from college. It’s really sad that sometimes a life with so much potential gets cut short,” he added. “He comes from a very good family, and our hearts go out to them.” (w/photo)

Kevin Duane Warner
Kevin Duane Warner, 29, of Homer, died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Warner was born February 15, 1980, in Jackson, to Louis Earl and Henrietta (Huff) Warner, Jr.
He married Monica Klewer June 11, 2008. She survives.
Mr. Warner graduated from Homer High School and was a fork-lift driver for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center and had also worked for Calhoun Foundry in Homer. He enjoyed watching the History Channel, fishing, hunting, maintaining the home and NASCAR racing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Cassandra Klewer of Homer; his mother, Henrietta (Joe) Hopkins of Bellevue; his father, Earl (Sue) Warner, Jr., of Homer; two sisters, Paula Warner of Spring Arbor and Tammy Warner of Coldwater; a brother, Damon Warner of Bellevue; four nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two nieces.
Visitation was held Tuesday at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion. There will be no other service.

Gary Dean Moulton
Gary Dean Moulton, 63, of Jonesville, died Friday, July 31, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Moulton was born July 7, 1946, in Hillsdale, to Donald DeWayne and Genevieve (Sayles) Moulton. He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Moulton worked at Finishing Touch for 20 years, and also at Butler Speedway. He enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales. He really loved his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Tanisha (Mike) Decaire of Jonesville; a son, Shawn (Amy) Moulton of Tekonsha; a sister, Louise (Roy Jr.) Signor of Litchfield; four brothers, Ruben (Marty) Moulton of Gladwin, Ron (Jeanie) Moulton of Wickenburg, Arizona, William (Lucy) Moulton of Coldwater and Conrad (Judy) Moulton of Horton; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dean and Wayne.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 4, at George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating.

Shirley J. Mees
Shirley J. Mees, 74, of Marshall, died Saturday, August 1, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Mees was born April 5, 1935, in Ecorse, to Claude R. and Sophie (Kovacs) Craven. She graduated from Homer High School in 1953.
She married Gerald W. Mees September 27, 1953, at the Homer United Methodist Church. He survives.
Mrs. Mees worked for Schuler’s Restaurant as a waitress and later became an administrative assistant for 30 years. After her retirement, she worked for Tidd-Williams Funeral Home in Homer for 15 years.
She was a member of the Marshall Women of the Moose #202 and the Homer VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, going to garage sales and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Joanne M. Allen of Marshall and Cheryl (Mark) VanBeck of Portage; three sons, Larry (Delania) Mees of Clayton, Gary (Chris) Mees of Battle Creek and Robert (Michelle) Mees of Marshall; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Craven and Charlie Craven, both of Homer; and a sister, Joyce Cooper of Lynn Creek, Missouri.
Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home Monday, August 10, from 2-8 p.m., with the family present to greet friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services celebrating her life will take place Tuesday, August 11, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Chaplain Robert Levy officiating. Interment will follow at Fisher Cemetery.

Sandra K. Sharp
Sandra K. Sharp, 61, of Clifford, died Thursday, August 6, 2009, at her home in Burlington Township. She had lived in Burlington Township for the past two years and was previously from the Deerfield Township area.
Mrs. Sharp was born June 29, 1948, in Albion, to Vernon and Charlotte (Davis) Taylor.
She graduated from Homer High School in 1966 and Central Michigan University in 1970, where she earned her teaching certificate.
She married John Sharp July 3, 1971, in Homer. He survives.
Mrs. Sharp taught at Sweet Elementary School in North Branch for 35 years, retiring in 2006.
She was a member of Country Christian Church in Deerfield Township, White Tails Unlimited Club and Delta Kappa Sigma Sorority at CMU. She enjoyed camping with friends, traveling and most of all, her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Christopher (Tanya) Sharp of Traverse City and Chad (Jen) Sharp of Fenton; and four grandchildren, Savannah, Isabella, Dylan and Ayden.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kevin, and a grandson, Jonathon.
Funeral services were held Monday at Country Christian Church with Pastor Roger Kerr officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lapeer.

Marina E. Bender
Marina E. Bender, 60, of Litchfield, died Friday, August 7, 2009, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Bender was born May 6, 1949, in Hettenleidelheim, Germany, to Harry and Elizabeth (Ullmer) Birkinsha.
She married Kenneth James “Jim” Bender February 27, 1970. He survives.
She worked at Litchfield State Savings Bank for many years and later became a customer representative for Alltel.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bender is survived by two sons, Scott Bender of Homer and Mark (Michelle) Bender of Hillsdale; three grandchildren Bryce, Payton and Riley Bender; a sister, Elizabeth Birkinsha of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and a brother, Harry Birkinsha of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Kathy.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evelyn L. Boulis
Evelyn L. Boulis, 74, of Coleman, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at the Toni and Trish House in Fisherville.
Mrs. Boulis was born January 25, 1935, in Midland County, to the late John and Bell (Jewell) Mitchell.
She married Eugene Boulis October 18, 1955, in Angola, Indiana. He survives.
She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church of Coleman and the Clare Assembly of God.
Mrs. Boulis and her family resided in Litchfield for a number of years before returning north.
She loved to crochet, paint, work in her flower gardens and loved her family and friends. She also loved the outdoors.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Boulis is survived by three sons, Dennis (Kari) Boulis of Hudson, Michael (Jean) Boulis of Homer and Dale (Jane) Boulis of Allen; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Minnie Childs of Coleman and Pearl (Otis) Lennox of Clare; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Mitchell, and a brother-in-law, Vernell Childs.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the O’Laughlin Funeral Home Inc. in Coleman, with the Rev. Caroline Hart officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Robert Oakley
Robert Oakley, 87, of Concord, died Saturday, August 8, 2009, at home.
Mr. Oakley was born August 18, 1921, in Howell, to Albert and Alice (Shoemaker) Oakley.
He served the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He married Doris Johnson July 2, 1965. She survives.
Mr. Oakley worked as a plumbing and heating contractor, but was an outdoorsman at heart and enjoyed fishing and golfing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Susan (Norman) Sullivan of S. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Martha (Mark) Sweet of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Nancy (Lyn Rochester) Oakley of Taylors, South Carolina, and Carol (Larry) Allen of Claxton, Georgia; two sister,s Grace Oakley of Jackson and Edna Orgeck of Southgate; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ronald K. “Ronnie” Warson
Ronald K. “Ronnie” Warson, 80, of Albion, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009.
Mr. Warson was born November 8, 1928, in Albion, to Harry and Sarah (Curry) Warson.
He was a graduate of Albion High School, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Starting in 1948, he and his brother owned and operated a Sinclair gas station in Homer.
He retired from Southeastern Michigan Gas Company as a service technician in 1985, after 34 years.
Mr. Warson was a member of the American Legion, and volunteered for the Albion Ambulance Service, City of Albion Fire Department and the Sheridan-Albion Township Fire Department for many years.
He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, gardening, woodworking, building projects, coffee times with his buddies and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
He is survived by Ann O’Connor; three daughters, Jackie (Don) Masternak of Albion, Jinell (Paul) Warson-Nelson of Brighton and Julie (Jeff) Litchard of Saline; five grandchildren, Audra Masternak, Steven, Erik and Skyla Babbitt, and Kristin and Ryan Litchard; two step-grandchildren, Nick and Natalie Nelson; Ann’s children and grandchildren, Sheila (Jim) Vanderhorst, Brian (Melinda) O’Connor and Jessica and Kyle O’Connor; a sister, Mary Jane Waito; a sister-in-law, Barbara Warson; a brother-in-law, Sam Markovich; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Kenneth (Mary Jo), Robert (Betty) and Victor (Ida) Warson; a sister, Chuddy Markovich; and a brother-in-law, Keith Waito.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 16, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Tim Marvil officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Louise Bartell
Louise Bartell, 96, of Midland, formerly of Jonesville, died Friday, August 14, 2009, at Midland King’s Daughters Home.
Mrs. Bartell was born August 1, 1913, in Homer, to Frank E. and Helen M. (Howe) Benham.
She married Claude H. Bartell October 16, 1937, in Homer, and he preceded her in death December 10, 1979.
Mrs. Bartell was a Michigan State Police wife. She and her husband lived in several southern Michigan posts before coming to work and live in Jonesville. She was a cafeteria manager for 27 years in the Jonesville school system and enjoyed cooking for the Rotary men’s club.
She had been a member of the Homer United Methodist Church and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Midland. She was associated with the order of the Eastern Star and the Michigan Schools Food Services Association.
For the past 15 years she resided between Midland and Sarasota, Florida.
Mrs. Bartell is survived by a son, James (Dawn) Bartell of Midland; a daughter, Barbara (Rann) Lincoln of Sarasota; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard, Maurice, Frank and George Benham; two sisters, Ruth Pulsipher and Mary Bush; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Dr. A Edward Perkins officiating.
A private burial took place at Pulaski Township Cemetery.

Kent D. Phipps
Kent D. Phipps, 59, of Albion, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at Life Span Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek.
Mr. Phipps was born January 9, 1950, in Albion, to Charles and Doris Marie (Linton) Phipps.
He married Cristina Gonzalez June 22, 1979. She survives.
Mr. Phipps had been in commercial building management and owned and operated Phipps Enterprises Property Management in Albion, since 1986.
He was a police officer for Albion Public Safety from 1975-1985, and also owned the Short Stoppe at one time.
He served in the National Guard during the Vietnam War and the Detroit riots, and was a member of the Lions Club.
Mr. Phipps enjoyed watching all of the Detroit sport clubs, playing sports, especially hockey, and being outdoors.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Aaron Linton Phipps of Albion; a sister, Karen Yankie of Albion; a brother, Kraig (Cynthia) Phipps of Tennessee; and a special brother-in-law, Ricardo Gonzalez of Albion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 21, at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with the Rev. Jim Codde officiating. Interment was held at Albion Memory Gardens.

Cindy M. Myers
Cindy M. Myers, 49, of Coldwater, formerly of Litchfield, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
Ms. Myers was born July 12, 1960, in Hillsdale, to Jason and Virginia (Campbell) Blount.
She had been employed as a security guard at Con Agra Foods and was also a CNA at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was a talented interior decorator, and enjoyed crocheting and yard work. She also loved music, birds and flowers.
Ms Myers is survived by four children, Matthew Freeman of South Bend, Indiana, Chris Hayes of Three Rivers, Trista Ann Goodson of Bronson and Hope Goodson of Quincy; eight grandchildren, including Aleyna Saleh, who she raised; her fiancé, Robert Givens of Coldwater; six sisters, Margaret (Bill) Whaley of Texas, Sue (Dennis) Parson of Coldwater, Florence (Mike) McHenny of Coldwater, Cathy (David) Dirr of Angola, Indiana, Catherine (Bill) Darnell of Angola and Stephanie Blount of Gibralter; and eight brothers, Bradford Page of Angola, Kenneth (Marilyn) Blount of Albion, David (Cherie) Blount, Indiana, Jason Jr. (Dee) Blount and Joseph (Donna) Blount, all of Pleasant Lake, Jason Myson (Linda Blount) of Hillsdale, Billy Page of Lagrange, Indiana and Dennis Blount of Chase.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Rodney Blount; a son, Laveryl Goodson, Jr.; a stepmother, D Blount; and a grandchild, Haley Jo Freeman.
A celebration of Ms. Myers’ life was held Friday, August 21, at her home with the Rev. Bill Wilson officiating.

Henry B. Langdon
Henry B. Langdon, 92, of Arizona, formerly of Albion, died Thursday, August 20, 2009.
Mr. Langdon was born October 21, 1916, in Morrice, to Earl and Emma (Brendahl) Langdon.
He married Florence Ruth Copeland September 22, 1938, in Jackson. She preceded him in death in 1996.
He farmed and worked at Union Steel while living in Albion, and after moving to Arizona he worked installing air conditioners. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda (Don) Wonus of Peoria, Arizona, and a son, Henry B. Langdon, Jr., of Buhl, Idaho.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice; a son, James Earl; four sisters; and one brother.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, August 25, at Fairview Cemetery in Homer, with the Rev. Tom Fox officiating.

Harold W. Pitts
Harold W. Pitts, 80, former long-time Litchfield resident, died Monday, August 24, 2009, in his home in Jonesville.
Mr. Pitts was born April 15, 1929, in Jefferson Township, to Jessie L. and Jearda (Swanson) Pitts.
Mr. Pitts married Martha Horn April 2, 1960. She preceded him in death November 1, 2004.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and retired from Simpson Industries in Litchfield.
He is survived by two sisters, Iris Bradshaw of Jonesville and Betty Strong of Morro Bay, California; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Allen Pitts; and a brother, Richard Pitts.
Private graveside services will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Hillsdale County Veterans Administration.

Josephus Edward Palmer
Josephus Edward Palmer, 63, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Palmer was born February 9, 1946, in Battle Creek, to John and Donna (Niswander) Palmer, Sr.
He married Linda Sue Adair May 29, 1971. She survives.
Mr. Palmer graduated from Hillsdale High School and belonged to the Jonesville Eagles Lodge. His hobbies included fishing, karaoke, singing, playing guitar and spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Donna Jean Bidelman of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; a sister, Nancy Palmer of Reading; a brother, James (Kathy) Palmer of Florida; two half-sisters, Martha Hernandez of Atlanta, Georgia and Amanda Crowder of Jackson; a half-brother, John Palmer, Jr. of Germany; three grandchildren, Melissa Scivoletti, Mathew Bidelman and Melanie Bidelman; and three great-grandchildren, Alexis Palmer-Scivoletti, Edward P. Scivoletti III and Trevor J.J. Hegeman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Amy.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 5, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with the Rev. Michael Murray officiating. Interment followed at Berg Cemetery in Montgomery.

John C. Lazarus
John C. Lazarus, 45, of Springfield, died Thursday, September 17, 2009, at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Lazarus was born March 13, 1964, in Lansing, to William and Judith (Hills) Lazarus of Homer.
He married Lisa J. Zimmerman March 18, 1989, in Albion. She survives.
He graduated from Homer High School in 1982. He was an electrician and member of Union #445. He was also a member of Faith Baptist Church, where he enjoyed playing the saxophone.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Lazarus is survived by two sons, Joshua J. and Lucas M. Lazarus, both of Battle Creek; a daughter, Hanna E. Lazarus of Battle Creek; his parents; a brother, William Glen Lazarus of Albion; and four sisters, Debra Lazarus-Torrey and Ellen Newman, both of Albion, Jill Mestdagh of Homer and Jaye Nevins of Three Rivers.
